Martin Luther King Jr embraced Gandhi's principles of non-violent resistance and civil disobedience and applied them to challenge the unjust, discriminatory practices employed by a predominantly white society against black people. These principles guided him as he articulated with a persuasive, spellbinding, emotional intensity the injustices and indignities practised against his race and against the other coloured peoples of the world. In 1964 Dr King won the coveted Nobel Peace Prize and accepted the prize in Oslo, Norway.
