An engaging and amusing account by an English woman of life in post-Soviet Russia which shows how little has changed for this nation in transition. Walton lived in a cramped communal apartment in the provincial town of Samara. She conveys the day-to-day life of endless queues for the toilet, to buy scarce food in the miserable stores, to report crimes. She also recounts the drunkenness of the men, the docility of the women, the continued clout of those formerly well placed in the Communist Party, and the hustling and striving of would-be entrepreneurs in a country struggling toward capitalism. As an Englishwoman, Walton has many of the privileges of foreigners -- higher income and better service -- but she also is subjected to exploitation and suspicion. Still, she is befriended by a host of characters, from a hustler to a fortune teller, who help her penetrate the life of average Russians and get an intimate look at life in a nation in transition.
