CLIMATE CHANGE & THE MARKET ECONOMY [Colin Robinson (ed)] The idea is now widespread that damaging, man-made climate change is occurring. Massive counter-action by governments is the remedy usually prescribed. But there is considerable uncertainty surrounding climate change forecasts and there are dangers in 'big government' approaches to the apparent problem. This book explores the processes by which conclusions about climate change are reached and discusses market-based approaches to dealing with global environmental issues. { 144pp, 130x200mm, June 2008; PB, £12.50, 0255365950:9780255365956 , Institute of Economic Affairs }
DOES BRITAIN NEED THE FSA? ((Hobart Paper Series)) [Philip Booth & Terry Arthur] It is difficult to imagine financial markets without a state regulator. But it was not so long ago that financial markets in Britain developed their own regulation, without government intervention. This monograph examines the economic case for a statutory regulator of investment transactions and finds it wanting. Private stock exchanges can provide regulation at less cost and less intrusively than the FSA. { 130x200mm, July 2009; PB, 0255365934:9780255365932 , Institute of Economic Affairs }
ECONOMIC CORRUPTION : Detection, Costs & Prevention [Federico N De Luca (ed)] Corruption has been around for a very long time and will be around in the future unless governments can figure out effective ways to combat it. This is not going to be easy. Although the study of the causes and consequences of corruption has a long history in economics, going back 30 years to seminal contributions on what economists call rent seeking, related empirical work on quantifying the extent of corruption and putting a dollar sign on its economic effects has been limited. This is hardly surprising since most corruption is clandestine. Also, determining just how efficient government institutions are is not what would be called an exact science. As a consequence, corruption is notoriously hard to measure and empirical economic research on the question is fairly meagre. The prevailing view is that corruption is harmful to economic growth. This new book presents the latest research from around the globe. { May 2008; HB, £104.50, 1604561602:9781604561609 , Nova Science }
INTERNATIONAL FINANCE & FINANCIAL SERVICES [Kristian L Hagen (ed)] International finance is the branch of economics that studies the dynamics of exchange rates, foreign investment, and how these affect international trade. Financial services is a term used to refer to the services provided by the finance industry. Financial services is also the term used to describe organisations that deal with the management of money and includes merchant banks, credit card companies, consumer finance companies, government sponsored enterprises, and stock brokerages. Financial services is the largest industry (or industry category) in the world, in terms of earnings. This new book presents important analyses in these interaction fields. { May 2008; HB, £104.50, 1600217567:9781600217562 , Nova Science }
PROHIBITIONS ((Readings Series)) [John Meadowcroft (ed)] This collection of essays examines those areas where the freedom of individual men and women to voluntarily engage in mutually advantageous exchanges is prohibited or restricted by government. The authors critically examine the economic and philosophical rationale for the prohibition of alcohol, the sale of body parts, medicinal drugs, pornography, prostitution, recreational drugs, tobacco and trade in endangered species, among other topics. { 130x200mm, March 2008; PB, £12.50, 0255365853:9780255365857 , Institute of Economic Affairs }
RECURRING ECONOMIC CRISIS IN KOREA [Jong Kyu Lee & Sanghack Lee] There exists a large volume of literature on Korean success in economic development. However, Korea has experienced several economic crises in the development process. While the financial crisis in 1997 has received a substantial amount of attention in the mass media and in the academic as well, Korea had not been immune to economic crisis prior to the 1997 financial crisis. This book reviews the experiences of economic crises and their resolutions in Korea since 1960s. The book examines each crisis and concludes that the factors that caused one previous crisis later brought about another crisis repeatedly. This indicates that the measures to resolve the previous crises were ultimately ineffective in the sense that the fundamental causes for the economic crisis had remained unresolved and, as a result, recurrence of the crisis has not been prevented. { May 2008; PB, £31.50, 1604561882:9781604561883 , Nova Science }
SOCIAL CONTRACT, FREE RIDE : A Study of the Public-Goods Problem [Anthony de Jasay] This book provides a novel account of the public goods dilemma. The author shows how the social contract, in its quest for fairness, actually helps to breed the parasitic 'free riding' it is meant to suppress. He also shows how, in the absence of taxation, many public goods would be provided by spontaneous group co-operation. This would, however, imply some degree of free riding. Unwilling to tolerate such unfairness, co-operating groups would eventually drift from voluntary to compulsory solutions, heedless of the fact that this must bring back free riding with a vengeance. The author argues that the perverse incentives created by the attempt to render public provision assured and fair are a principal cause of the poor functioning of organised society. { 304pp, 155x230mm, April 2008; PB, £8.95, 0865977011:9780865977013 / HB, £13.95, 0865977372:9780865977372 , Liberty Fund }
