ASIAN STUDIES

ADVANCED STUDY IN THE HISTORY OF MODERN INDIA : 1707-1813 [J L Mehta] An analytical and critical account of the political history of early modern India from 1707 to 1813. The narrative shatters the contention of contemporary European writers that it was 'the dark age' of Indian history, characterised by 'political anarchy and misgovernment', until the British brought it under their sway. The main thesis of the author is that the period was marked by two distinct phases; the first phase, which lasted from 1707 to 1760, saw the rapid disintegration of the Mughal power and its replacement by the Maratha hegemony. Meanwhile, the English traders turned colonialists, after consolidating their hold along the Indian seacoasts and conquest of 'Carnatic' and Bengal, challenged the Maratha hegemony. The second phase of developments was thus marked by the struggle for supremacy between these two powers. The author makes use of contemporary English and Marathi sources and the intensive researches of modern historians to portray a compact picture of their findings in the form of a text book for the benefit of the degree students. Historical facts are reinterpreted through illuminating expositions, refreshing characterisation of historic personalities, and objective assessment of events and movements. Together with maps, a select bibliography, glossary and an elaborate index, the volume makes a rich contribution to the advancement of modern historical literature. { 739pp, 145x220mm, January 2005; HB, £31.99, 1932705546:9781932705546 , Sterling Publishers PVT Ltd (New Dawn Press) }

CHINESE IDENTITY IN POST-SUHARTO INDONESIA : Culture, Politics & Media [Chang-Yau Hoon] During Suharto's New Order (1966-1998), the ethnic Chinese expanded the nation's economy (and their own wealth), but, paradoxically, were marginalised and discriminated against in all social spheres: culture, language, politics, entrance to state-owned universities, and public service and public employment. Following the fall of Suharto, and the anti-Chinese riots in May 1998, Indonesia underwent a process of 'Reformasi' and democratisation, whereby for the first time in several decades Chinese culture became more visible. Many ethnic Chinese took advantage of the new democratic space to establish political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and action groups to fight for the abolition of discriminatory laws, defend their rights and promote solidarity between ethnic groups in Indonesia. They utilised the 'Reformasi' atmosphere to promote pluralism and multiculturalism, and to liberate their long-suppressed identity and cultural heritage. This book sets out to unpack the complex meanings of 'Chineseness' in post-1998 Indonesia, including the ways in which the policy of multiculturalism enabled such a 'resurgence', the forces that shaped it and the possibilities for 'resinicisation'. The author examines how ethnic Chinese self-identify, and investigates how the pribumi 'Other' has contributed to identifying the ethnic boundary in terms of 'race' and class. A unique aspect of the study is its discussion of the complexities of cultural crossing, borrowing and mixing experience of Chinese-Indonesians through localisation and globalisation. { 230pp, 152x229mm, July 2008; HB, £49.95, 1845192680:9781845192686 , Sussex Academic Press }
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE ON HEALTH IN INDIA [Gerrard Vallee (ed)] This is the first of two volumes reporting Nightingale’s forty years of work to improve public health in India. It begins with her work to establish the Royal Commission on the Sanitary State of the Army in India, for which she drafted questionnaires, analysed returns, and did much of the final writing, going on to promote the implementation of its recommendations. In this volume a gradual shift of attention can be seen from the health of the army to that of the civilian population. Famine and epidemics were frequent and closely interrelated occurrences. To combat them, Nightingale recommended a comprehensive set of sanitary measures, and educational and legal reforms, to be overseen by a public health agency. Skilful in implementing the expertise, influence, and power of others, she worked with her impressive network of well-placed collaborators, having them send her information and meet with her back in London. The volume includes Nightingale’s work on the royal commission itself, related correspondence, numerous published pamphlets, articles and letters to the editor, and correspondence with her growing network of viceroys, governors of presidencies, and public health experts. Working with British collaborators, she began this work; over time Nightingale increased her contact with Indian nationals and promoted their work and associations. { 1024pp, 155x230mm, December 2006; HB, £88.50, 0889204683:9780889204683 , Wilfrid Laurier University Press }
FROM STIGMA TO ASSERTION E-BOOK : Untouchability, Identity & Politics in Early & Modern India [Mikael Aktor, Ph.D. & Robert Deliège (eds)] In this book eight South-Asianists explore the Indian phenomenon known as 'un-touchability'. Historically untouchability was a set of discriminative practices that bound the lowest castes to low-status jobs and restricted their social mobility. Formally the practice was abolished with the constitution of the independent India, and in order to compensate for the social and economic setback caused by centuries' discrimination a reservation policy that guaranteed the former untouchables access to education and jobs was introduced. These measures have changed the life conditions of the targeted groups, but they have also created tensions in a society where many other groups experience economic stress. First of all they have preserved caste itself as something that matters in the competition for economic benefits. Thereby they have created today's paradox: That caste assertiveness has become a means to counter inequalities. Four essays (Andrew Wyatt, Simon Charsley, Kathinka Froystad, and Marie-Caroline Saglio-Yatzimirsky), all based on field work carried out in the late 1990s, address these present issues. Three essays (Mikael Aktor, Eleanor Zelliot, and Jocelyn Clarke) explore pre- and late-colonial material, while the introduction by Robert Deliege is a critical discussion of the combination of caste rhetoric and confrontation strategy in today's Dalit movement. { 187pp, December 2008; EB, £17.00, 8763507757:9788763507752 , Museum Tusculanum Press }
GLOBAL WARMING & CHINA'S ENVIRONMENTAL DIPLOMACY [Yu Hongyuan] Since the early 1990s, there are two increasingly hot topics attracting numerous scholarly attentions in Chinese politics: first, it is the transformation of China's political system. Second, it is China's increasingly involvement in international regimes. Nevertheless, until now, there are only a few scholars to work out the distinctive relations between them, and even less people work on the bureaucratic politics level. By explaining and evaluating the development of policymaking coordination in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the author demonstrates the argument that international regimes have contributed to the development of coordination in Chinese Policymaking, taking the UNFCCC as a departure. { 199pp, 180x260mm, February 2008; HB, £59.50, 1604560169:9781604560169 , Nova Science Publishers }
GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT & POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC [Kartik C Roy & Srikanta Chatterjee (eds)] This volume presents a variety of papers on issues related to growth, development and poverty prepared by specialists in their particular development-related fields. While the living standards of most people around the world have improved over time in absolute terms, many are still in desperate poverty. The major bulk of humanity lives in the continent of Asia, and it is here that some of the more spectacular contrasts in both economic growth and levels of affluence and destitution can be found. Whether India and China can continue to grow as fast as they have done in recent years remains to be seen. More importantly perhaps, whether growth alone can reduce poverty in these countries and in others is a question that needs to be discussed and understood. Outside of India and China, the African continent, particularly the nations in Sub-Saharan Africa is home to large numbers of poor and deprived humanity. Many of these countries are natural resource rich, but that has not enabled many of them to achieve adequate growth and reduce poverty. As countries grow, they put extra pressure on both global resources and the natural environment. The question as to whether there are finite limits to economic growth in a global sense is one that has long exercised thinkers. Technological progress has often enabled countries to economise on resource use without sacrificing growth. Whether that can continue indefinitely is also a question that has acquired a new urgency with the recent faster growth experience of the most populous countries. { 221pp, 180x260mm, October 2007; HB, £59.50, 1594549311:9781594549311 , Nova Science Publishers }
HISTORY OF ASIA : From Early Times to the Present [B V Rao] The importance of the study of the history of Asia needs no special emphasis, particularly with the emergence of Japan, China and India as major powers of this continent. The present book, History of Asia, is different from other books of this genre, as it connects the ancient and medieval with the modern. It deals with the account of each country in its geographical setting, highlighting those incidents in neighbouring countries which have had some impact upon it. The ancient and medieval periods cover topics like migration, early settlements, formation of kingdoms and empires, socio-economic matters, Islamic penetrations and the advent of Western powers. The modern period is treated in great detail, especially matters like colonisation, impact of Western civilisation, the rise of nationalism and the gaining of independence following the Second World War. Current history, which includes aspects like subversion of democracies, the ushering in of military rule, ethnic conflicts, movements for the restoration of democracy, oppression of minorities, economic issues and the possibility of nuclear war -- right up to the end of the millennium -- has been dealt with in a fascinating way, with a bibliography to stimulate the reader’s interest. Focus on countries in their regional context marks the character of the book or its importance. The history of the biggest continent, Asia, is presented in a chronological way, making reading a pleasure for all. { 503pp, 145x220mm, January 2005; HB, £19.99, 1932705473:9781932705478 , Sterling Publishers PVT Ltd (New Dawn Press) }
LETTERS FROM TABRIZ : The Russian Suppression of the Iranian Constitutional Movement [Edward G Browne] In August 1907 while Iran was in the throes of its Constitutional Revolution, Britain and Russia concluded a secret agreement to divide the country between themselves into zones of influence. In 1910 with the tacit support of the British, Tsarist Russia occupied northwest Iran and violently suppressed the constitutional movement in Tabriz, the northwestern city which was at the centre of the constitutional movement. The ferocity of the Russian occupation took leaders of the constitutionalists by surprise, and in desperation they cried out for help to democratic nations. Edward G Browne was a scholar and professor at Cambridge University who wrote "The Persian Revolution" and the four-volume "Literary History of Persia". He supported the constitutionalists in word and deed. Appalled by the British government's acquiescence of the Russian atrocities in Tabriz, he tried through letters to the editor, political lobbying, and the writing of pamphlets to mobilise public opinion to force the British government to intervene with Russia. "Letters from Tabriz" is the publication, prepared by Browne, of the letters sent to him by Iranian constitutionalist leaders describing, in rousing eyewitness accounts, the Russian atrocities in Tabriz. Its full publication was stifled because of the Anglo-Russian partnership prior to World War I, and it has never been published in English until now. { 288pp, 140x215mm, July 2008; PB, £23.50, 1933823259:9781933823256 , Mage Publishers }

Accompanied by selected passages from the classic commentary of Zhu Xi -- one of the most influential and insightful interpreters of Confucianism -- this edition provides readers with a parallel to the Chinese practice of reading a classic text alongside traditional commentaries. Also included are an Introduction that situates Mengzi and Zhu Xi in their intellectual and social contexts; a glossary of names, places and important terms; a selected bibliography; and an index. { ca288pp, October 2008; PB, £9.95, 087220913X:9780872209138 , Hackett Publishing }
NEW PERSPECTIVES ON CHINA & AGING [Jason L Powell & Ian Cook (eds)] The first part of the book is entitled 'Family, Transition and Ageing' and addresses rapid social and economic changes in China through a kaleidoscope of differential perspectives that focus on how family continues to be an important reference point for the past, present and future institution in the care of older people. The second part of the book focuses on the tangible social forces associated with managing old age: 'Welfare, Consumption and Ageing'. This section is important in locating the structures and agents of power that are relevant to maintaining trust and social relations between older people, the Chinese State and its dualism of state welfare and consumption of welfare. { 160pp, 180x260mm, June 2007; HB, £52.99, 1600217508:9781600217500 , Nova Science Publishers }
PRATTLER’S TALE : Bengal, Marxism, Governance [Ashok Mitra] Offering a thought-provoking, incisive analysis of Bengal and India, these memoirs, translated for the first time into English, spanning the 1930s to today, bring contemporary India alive. Mitra mercilessly dissects the middle class, the 'bhadralok', of which he is a member. He analyses the fledgling democracy of India, taking us through the heady days of state planning on the Soviet model, criticising the worldwide mantra of globalisation and liberalisation which he believes aggravates poverty. He held considerable positions of power within the establishment, including the office of economic adviser to prime minister Indira Gandhi. He provides much insider information on the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971. Most intriguing are his thoughts of being a Marxist in a poor country and his discussion of his stint as minister for nine years. { 473pp, 155x230mm, February 2007; HB, £40.00, 8185604800:9788185604800 , Stree }
TRANSFORMATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN ECONOMIES [Teofilo C Daquila] This book analyses the growth, development and crisis experiences of the Southeast Asian economies, in particular, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand -- also known as ASEAN-5. The proposition is developed that the robust economic performance of the Southeast Asian economies during the past four decades has been attributed to the various factors, developments and independent national policies which have been pursued by the individual member countries rather than to any regional economic framework. The book covers eleven topics which is suitable for a one-semester course on the economics of Southeast Asia. Also, it has a narrower area coverage as it focuses only on the five economies, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The sectoral treatment of the crisis impact and the analytical treatment of policy responses to the crisis differentiate this book from other publications on the same topic. Finally, the book provides an analysis of national developments, policies and factors which have contributed to the economic transformation of the respective Southeast Asian economies. { 301pp, 180x260mm, February 2007; PB, £25.50, 1600211089:9781600211089 , Nova Science Publishers }

Brief biographies of the commentators, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index are also included. { ca240pp, October 2008; PB, £11.95, 0872209113:9780872209114 , Hackett Publishing }
