CHINESE HERBAL DRUG RESEARCH TRENDS
[Felix M Ching (ed)]
Chinese Herbal Medicine -- part of a larger healing system called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also includes acupuncture, massage dietary advice and exercise. TCM is a popular method of treatment -- is actually called Chinese Drug Therapy in China because it uses a wide variety of substances and therapeutic modalities. Plant, animal and mineral substances are all included in the Materia Medica of Chinese Drug Therapy. The earliest uses date back at least 4000 years to the Shang dynasty. Characters representing medicinal substances have been found carved into oracular bone fragments. These were used diagnostically by the Wu Shaman of this time. The earliest materia Medica, the Sheng Nung Peng Tsao, recorded over 10,000 medicinal substances. While there seems to be an almost unlimited amount of medicinal substances, the most commonly used number around 200. Increased attention has begun being given to the field due to several factors: The apparent success stories in many cases; The failure of Western medicine in many disorders; and Realisation on the part of Western researchers that successful drugs can be designed on the basis of Chinese herbal drugs. This new book presents the latest research in the field.

CHINESE IDENTITY IN POST-SUHARTO INDONESIA
: Culture, Politics & Media
[Chang-Yau Hoon]
During Suharto's New Order (1966-1998), the ethnic Chinese expanded the nation's economy (and their own wealth), but, paradoxically, were marginalised and discriminated against in all social spheres: culture, language, politics, entrance to state-owned universities, and public service and public employment. Following the fall of Suharto, and the anti-Chinese riots in May 1998, Indonesia underwent a process of 'Reformasi' and democratisation, whereby for the first time in several decades Chinese culture became more visible. Many ethnic Chinese took advantage of the new democratic space to establish political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and action groups to fight for the abolition of discriminatory laws, defend their rights and promote solidarity between ethnic groups in Indonesia. They utilised the 'Reformasi' atmosphere to promote pluralism and multiculturalism, and to liberate their long-suppressed identity and cultural heritage. This book sets out to unpack the complex meanings of 'Chineseness' in post-1998 Indonesia, including the ways in which the policy of multiculturalism enabled such a 'resurgence', the forces that shaped it and the possibilities for 'resinicisation'. The author examines how ethnic Chinese self-identify, and investigates how the pribumi 'Other' has contributed to identifying the ethnic boundary in terms of 'race' and class. A unique aspect of the study is its discussion of the complexities of cultural crossing, borrowing and mixing experience of Chinese-Indonesians through localisation and globalisation.

CHINESE ARCHITECTURE & PLANNING
: Ideas, Methods, Techniques
[Qinghua Guo]
China possesses a long continuous architectural history, and architecture plays a distinctive role in Chinese civilisation itself, in which the concept of architecture and the way of construction are entirely different from those in the West. In the field of architectural history, a specialist study by a variety of distinguished scholars, both Chinese and non-Chinese, covered the style and aesthetics of Chinese architecture that has been recognised as timelessness and unchanging quality. The architectural diversity and variation, and technological innovation and evolution of Chinese architecture have largely been ignored. This book presents a thematic discussion of architectural history and a critical evaluation of city planning, with a focus on the issues of ideas, methods and techniques in the context of the culture, politics and religion of the pre-modern China. In the book, Qinghua Guo establishes a broad periodisation for the architectural formation and development with a clear conceptual framework for it, and interprets its architectonics and typology in details. This study attempts to identify major characters of Chinese architecture and planning in order to understand how they were formed and why.

SINGAPORE'S MODERNIZATION
: Westernization & Modernizing Confucian Manifestations
[Wei-Bin Zhang]
This book is a part of a broad study about Confucianism and its implications for modernisation of the Confucian regions (covering mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, and Singapore). Singapore provides a typical example for understanding the Chinese 'Westernising' processes as well as for investigating possible implications of Confucianism for modernisation. It is argued that the difference in modernisation processes between the mainland China and overseas Chinese is much due to the differences in population size and geography. Since the Western powers had enforced China to open its doors to Western powers from the Opium War, many Chinese people left China for overseas. It is in foreign lands and in Taiwan that the Chinese have benefited from Western thought and institutions.

FAITH, MYTH, & REASON IN HAN CHINA
[Michael Loewe]
In his classic study of the cultural history of Han China, Michael Loewe uses both archaeological discoveries and written records to sketch the conceptual background of various artefacts of the Han period, and shows how ancient Chinese thought is as much informed by mythology as it is dependent on reason. Originally published as Chinese Ideas of Life and Death: Faith, Myth and Reason in the Han Period (202BC-AD220), this edition includes a new Preface that discusses relevant discoveries made since the first publication and an updated list of other works on relevant topics.

HONG KONG
: The Pearl Made of British Mastery & Chinese Docile-Diligence
[Wei Bin Zhang]
Hong Kong has an urbanisation history of an interesting course -- from fishing village of the Qing dynasty under the Manchu rule, to British colony with 98 per cent of its population being Chinese, to global city with great wealth and business activities, to Communist China’s Special Administrative Region (SAR) from 1 July 1997. China resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong and granted Hong Kong the right to self-government for at least 50 years, except over diplomatic and defense matters. Long before the return of Hong Kong to China, the colony had already firmly established itself as a regional business centre. It had been at the forefront of the East Asian economic 'miracle' between the 1970s and the mid 1990s. Lightened by multi-coloured neon signs of commercial advertisements, the semi-westernised Chinese city is more attractive in night than in daytime. Hong Kong is full of contrasts and paradoxes. The wide variety of the city’s contrasting and yet fluid and interesting social and cultural images, aptly has been described as, 'east and west', local and colonial, modern and traditional, extravagant and frugal -- has earned it the epithet 'a cultural kaleidoscope'. The author explores these contrasts and paradoxes not only from economic, cultural, and social perspectives, but also from perspectives of non-linear theory and Adam Smith’s and Confucian philosophies -- an endeavour which no other author has systematically made before.

CHINA-UNITED STATES TRADE
: Inextricably Intertwined?
[Barton V Celone (ed)]
U.S.-China economic ties have expanded substantially over the past several years. Total U.S.-China trade, which totaled only $5 billion in 1980, rose to $343 billion in 2006. China is also now the 2nd largest U.S. trading partner, its 2nd largest source of U.S. imports, and its 4th largest export market. With a huge population and a rapidly expanding economy, China is a potentially huge market for U.S. exporters. However, economic relations have become strained over a number of issues, including China's large and growing trade surpluses with the United States; its failure to fully implement its World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments, especially in regards to intellectual property rights (IPR); its refusal to adopt a floating currency system; and its maintenance of industrial policies and other practices deemed unfair and/or harmful to various U.S. economic sectors. China is a major supplier of consumer products (such as toys), and an increasingly important supplier of various food products. Reports of unsafe seafood, pet food, toys, tires, and other products imported from China over the past year have raised concern in the United States over the health, safety, and quality of imported Chinese products. This book presents important analyses which deal in part with whether the US economy would seriously falter with a substantial decrease in trade activity with China.

CHINA & AMERICA'S EMERGING PARTNERSHIP
: A Realistic New Perspective
[John Milligan-Whyte, Mannie Manhong Lui, Howard H Jiang & Dai Min]
This book is about the evolving competitive relationships between the American and Chinese governments. It presents an urgently needed new perspective that recognises and responds to the reality that China's political, social, economic and legal systems, as well as business culture cannot and will not be like America's, even though China now shares a passion for capitalism. The traditional Western perspectives about the future of China are that it will inevitably become democratic or collapse or it will remain authoritarian and stagnate. These ideas are related to a view that armed conflict between America and China may be or is inevitable. The traditional understandings are all based on the false assumptions that China can, should and will be like America as soon as possible. "China & America's Emerging Partnership" presents a new and realistic perspective for understanding what China and capitalism with Chinese characteristics are all about. Then it examines the reasons why America and China are presently on a lose-lose collision course. The authors construct a compelling alternative scenario for America and China's future that has as its foundation the win-win strategies of co-operation rather than mutually self-defeating cut-throat competition. They present a unique guide for how balance can be achieved in the competitive race between the American and Chinese economies. Through this fog of dire prediction now shines a beacon of hope that reveals a compelling case for continued American economic success aligned with the rising prowess of China's new economy.

CHINA INTRANSITION, VOLUME 1
[K S Sim (ed)]
China is a country in the midst of a transition which is inscrutable to almost all observers. The leadership has changed from the 'old guard' to the 'new guard' with hardly a slip. Capitalism is roaring but somehow at the same time doesn't exist. The economy is booming in virtually all areas. The military is growing more powerful each year, many industries are at world level, and China is taking more and more steps to join the international community while being sure as she doesn't snuggle up too closely. Still, with a population of 1.3 billion and staggering poverty in the rural areas making up the vast part of the country, the face of China remains centuries old. Where she goes, nobody knows. This series examines the issues, policies and progress of China's transition.

CHINA'S CURRENCY & ECONOMIC ISSUES
[Wayne M Morrison, Marc Labonte & Jonathan E Sanford]
China has a policy of pegging its currency (the yuan) to the U.S. dollar. If the yuan is undervalued against the dollar, there are likely to be both benefits and costs to the U.S. economy. It would mean that imported Chinese goods are cheaper than they would be if the yuan were market determined. This lowers prices for U.S. consumers and diminishes inflationary pressures. It also lowers prices for U.S. firms that use imported inputs (such as parts) in their production, making such firms more competitive. Critics of China’s peg point to the large and growing U.S. trade deficit with China as evidence that the yuan is undervalued and harmful to the U.S. economy. The relationship is more complex, for a number of reasons. First, while China runs a large trade surplus with the United States, it runs a significant trade deficit with the rest of the world. Second, an increasing level of Chinese exports are from foreign invested companies in China that have shifted production there to take advantage of China’s abundant low cost labour. Third, the deficit masks the fact that China has become one of the fastest growing markets for U.S. exports. Finally, the trade deficit with China accounted for 23% of the sum of total U.S. bilateral trade deficits in 2004, indicating that the overall trade deficit is not caused by the exchange rate policy of one country, but rather the shortfall between U.S. saving and investment. This book presents a coherent examination of the details behind China’s currency policies as they relate to outside factors.

CULTURE, ORGANIZATION & MANAGEMENT IN EAST ASIA
: Doing Business in China
[Heidi Dahles & Harry Wels (eds)]
Current management books and manuals make a popular topic out of doing business in China, and they operate on the assumption that Chinese business culture strongly contrasts Western. However, evidence suggests that tensions between value and market and community and individual are part of every market-entering society, while only the reactions differ. This new book raises questions about the ways personal relations are dealt with in China, specifically relations between Chinese and Western partners. Social relationships carry considerable weight in Chinese culture, with special emphasis on the role of social connections and rules of conduct. The chapters of this book analyse and assess the methods for harmonising business relations across cultures.

ECONOMIC TSUNAMI
: China's Car Industry Will Sweep Away Western Car Makers
[Dr Kevin Baker]
The car markets around the world are about to get hit by a large quantity of cheap, quality new cars and car components, and the impact of those cars will be as sudden and as forceful as a tsunami. The surge of competition will be a result of the ever-accelerating development of the Chinese motor vehicle manufacturers. Those manufacturers were comparatively small and technologically inferior during the latter part of the twentieth century, but in the new millennium they have developed with surprising speed -- doubling their output around every five years until in the very near future they will not only be dominant in China but will also be major players on the world stage. The motor vehicle manufacturing industry in many western countries has been faltering in recent years. It has been under enormous pressure even in current world trading conditions -- even before the impact of Chinese cars. This book presents research into the development of car industry infrastructure in China and the implications of the increasing efficiency of its auto manufacturing industries, particularly the impact of the Chinese industry on the manufacturing industry and markets in Australia and other western countries. The author has held senior positions in Chinese universities from Shanghai to Chengdu over the past fourteen years, and as part of his duties has supervised over a hundred postgraduate students completing dissertations on management and economics, including research into varied aspects of the car industry. Drawing on that experience, he has developed the thesis that an influx of cheap, quality cars and car components will soon transform the world car making industry, just as a flood of cheap, quality motorcycles brought about the virtual demise of Western motorcycle manufacturers a generation ago.

EXTENT OF MARKETIZATION OF ECONOMIC SYSTEMS IN CHINA
[Chen Zongsheng, Wu Zhe & Xie Siquan]
China's economy is currently undergoing double transformations or transitions: the system pattern is being transformed from central-planned economy into a market economy, and the development frame is changing from a low-income type to a middle-income type. That the double transition take place simultaneously in a developing and socialist country, China, is quite significant for the whole world. People try to understand in what way and to what degree the current development is different from traditional China; and how it is associated with the roads that developed countries have passed. This book centres on the transformation to an economic system pattern. It endeavours to define the transformation extent of China's economic system pattern up to now and to measure the paces of marketisation progress. The stages and features of China's economic system reform are described as well as the features of the target pattern. Then the implications and features of marketisation are elucidated because they are the basis for the design of the measurement indicators.

FDI IN CHINA
: Contributions to Growth, Restructuring & Competitiveness
[Jiang Xiaojuan]
By the early 21st century, the FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) sector had carved out a major niche in the Chinese economy and exerted a remarkable impact on the nation's economic growth, industrial restructuring and its degree of integration with the global economy. The major role of the FDI sector manifests itself in many aspects, such as serving as a source of funds, improving investment efficiency, boosting output, introducing advanced technology and research capacities, ameliorating the industrial structure, expanding exports, upgrading the export commodity mix, and promoting economic restructuring. All these are described and analysed in great detail in this book. The last few chapters of the book feature the author's prognostications of the key areas where FDI is to be solicited and the salient features of what China will do in this respect. FDI will continue its massive flow into the Chinese manufacturing industry and play an active role in turning China into a global manufacturing centre for a number of industries. The FDI inflow in the service industry will surge in a sustained fashion, thereby raising its efficiency and improving the services offered. In the last section of the book the author presents her idea about the emphasis and trends of the Chinese government when adapting its policies governing foreign investment to an increasingly open economy, and ponders what administrative policies and measures will be taken in this regard.

GLOBAL WARMING & CHINA'S ENVIRONMENTAL DIPLOMACY
[Yu Hongyuan]
Since the early 1990s, there are two increasingly hot topics attracting numerous scholarly attentions in Chinese politics: first, it is the transformation of China's political system. Second, it is China's increasingly involvement in international regimes. Nevertheless, until now, there are only a few scholars to work out the distinctive relations between them, and even less people work on the bureaucratic politics level. By explaining and evaluating the development of policymaking coordination in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the author demonstrates the argument that international regimes have contributed to the development of coordination in Chinese Policymaking, taking the UNFCCC as a departure.

GOVERNMENT & MARKET IN CHINA
: A Local Perspective
[Jian Zhang]
This book examines the key role played by local governments in China's market-oriented economic reform process since 1978. In particular, it addresses the much debated questions of why Communist Party officials at the local level embraced market reform despite its potentially detrimental effects on their power, and how the choices they made have shaped institutional changes and the pattern of development in the economies under their jurisdiction. In contrast to most recent studies of local governments in China, which have tended to explain local state activism in terms of the economic interests of local government officials, this book highlights the role that political interests have played in shaping economic behaviour. The contention is that the active involvement of local governments in the economy has been motivated not only by a desire to seek economic benefits, but also, and more importantly, by political considerations. The political perspective emphasised in this book leads to a reassessment of the nature and effect of the role of local government in the economic growth and institutional changes in China's transitional economy. Tracing the behaviour of local government to its political origin, the book not only explains more fully the motivational sources of economic activism at the local level, but also demonstrates the contradictory ways in which local governments intervene in the economy, the internal weakness of the local state-led development, and how problems caused by politically-motivated economic intervention catalysed the privatisation of the local government-run economic sector during mid-1990s.

HONG KONG DVD
: A Story of Human Freedom & Progress
This DVD shows how the economic transformation of Hong Kong from a modest trading centre to a modern industrial and free-trade economy (prior to China's annexation) came about through a reliance on the market and economic liberty rather than on central planning through governmental direction. Great Britain established the crown colony of Hong Kong in 1841, just 65 years after the publication of 'The Wealth of Nations'. It was designated a free port from the start, with no duties or protective tariffs for its residents. This DVD takes an in-depth look at the economy of Hong Kong in its final days as a British colony. We see how it was transformed into a modern industrial economy solely by reliance on he invisible hand of the market. Seeing Hong Kong as a laboratory experiment that confirms Adam Smith's theories, the DVD outlines a proven strategy for the development of emerging economies and a powerful argument for a capitalist economy bolstered by balanced budgets, low tax rates, and avoidance of government borrowing.

INCOME DISTRIBUTION DURING SYSTEM REFORM & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA
: The Status & Trend of Income Inequality of Chinese Residents
[Chen Zongsheng & Zhou Yunbo]
The book is concerned with research on income distribution inequality of Chinese residents in the last 20 years of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21th century. Measuring and making clear the status of inequality of every consisting parts of normal income of Chinese residents is an important concept. First, on the basis of the statistical data and the estimated data, as well as several kinds of methods that are used to calculate income inequality and suited for the available data, the authors computed the population-income Gini Coefficients of normal income inequality respectively for China's national, urban and rural areas. Second, by using urban/rural income ratio, Theil index and others, they measured the status and trends of Chinese urban/rural gap and regional income disparity, as well as their influence on the whole income inequality. Third, by case study and decomposition analysis some main factors, which had impacts on income inequality of urban and rural residents in China, and their influence, were researched. Fourth, the authors studied and measured the status and changes of the poor population and poverty rates in rural and urban areas in China. Fifth, the trend of inequality of normal income of Chinese residents was predicted at large, and the status of distribution inequality of Chinese residents was judged.

: An Annotated Bibliography
[Gerald Chan]
This Bibliography aims to provide a source to those working in the area of contemporary Chinese international relations. LITTLE EMPERORS
: A Year with the Future of China
[JoAnn Dionne]
Much has been made of how the New China has become an economic juggernaut in today's world while basic liberties and freedoms have remained constricted. We know where the ageing leadership is taking China, but what of the very young. The author has taught in a Chinese elementary school and has discovered the world's oldest country throwing itself headlong into the future with all the problems that unlimited progress can bring in its wake. She met many young people who live in that future. Chinese culture as seen through the eyes of a North American, this book provides a funny often poignant glimpse into a nation undergoing rapid transformation.

MULTUAL EMPOWERMENT OF STATE & PEASANTRY
: Village Self-Government in Rural China
[Xu Wang]
This new and timely book addresses a series of questions regarding one of the most important political developments in contemporary China: the state-led democratic practice of village self-government in rural areas. Why would an authoritarian state promote grassroots democratic reform? To what extent has this reform changed the local power structures, grassroots governance, and state-peasant relations? What would be the implications of this grassroots democratic reform for China's democratisation in the long run? This book examines the origins, process, and impact of this paradoxical political development and explores the dynamics of political change and mutually transforming relations between the state and society in Post-Mao China. It argues that the practice of village self-government was promoted by the Chinese party-state to cope with the dual crises of legitimacy and governability it had faced in the countryside after a decade of rural economic reforms.

NEW CHINA BUSINESS STRATEGIES
: Chinese & American Companies as Global Partners
[John Milligan-Whyte, Mannie Manhong Lui, Howard H Jiang & Dai Min]
This work is about strategies American companies should use when doing business with China. It demonstrates the benefits of co-operation, such as the path-breaking 2005 deal between IBM's consumer computer division and China's Legend, resulting in the creation of China's Lenovo Computer Company. The authors review other examples of US-Chinese joint ventures and present new strategies for how American and Chinese firms can work together in areas and ways that are presently untapped. Chinese companies are moving into position now to quickly emerge as giant multinationals that displace or acquire Fortune 1000 companies sooner than many anticipate. That is why this is such an important and compelling work that will become a "must read" for corporate executives concerned about their existing and future business in China. A western company without a carefully laid out "China Strategy" will find it increasingly difficult to remain profitable in other markets. And the "China Strategies" of most American companies have not been as successful as "China's Strategy" of dealing with its competitors. So, how can a foreign company profit from China's emerging global economic dominance? Western companies and governments that focus on strategies that fulfil the needs of China and Chinese trading partners, will have advantages over their competitors who do not. This controversial book reveals the key fallacies American political and business leaders face in the relationship between American and Chinese styles of capitalism and government. Collaborating profitably with emerging, giant, global Chinese corporations may be a more rewarding strategy than ignoring them or trying to compete with them. This title's new win-win strategic approach is the only alternative to America and China remaining competitors and slipping into trade war, Cold War, armed conflict and ecological catastrophe. These related books provide the urgently needed new perspectives and blueprints necessary to build the global strategic partnerships and shared prosperity between American and Chinese companies.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON CHINA & AGING
[Jason L Powell & Ian Cook (eds)]
The first part of the book is entitled 'Family, Transition and Ageing' and addresses rapid social and economic changes in China through a kaleidoscope of differential perspectives that focus on how family continues to be an important reference point for the past, present and future institution in the care of older people. The second part of the book focuses on the tangible social forces associated with managing old age: 'Welfare, Consumption and Ageing'. This section is important in locating the structures and agents of power that are relevant to maintaining trust and social relations between older people, the Chinese State and its dualism of state welfare and consumption of welfare.

POLITICAL DYNAMICS OF HONG KONG UNDER CHINESE SOVEREIGNTY
[Jermain Lam]
Politics in Hong Kong was activated when Hong Kong started its democratisation process. Prior to the development of representative government in the mid 80s, politics in Hong Kong was 'absorbed by administrative consultation'. The 1989 June-fourth incident and the arrival of the last Governor, Chris Pattern, accelerated the democratisation process and intensified the competition for elected seats in the three-tier representative assemblies. Major political actors, including the liberals, businessmen, conservatives, Beijing officials, and the general citizenry were all divided on the issues of democracy and China -- Hong Kong relationship. With the introduction of directly elected seats to the Legislative Council, patterns of political interactions among political actors were largely transformed. The Legislative Council was turned into an active chamber of discussion; the relationship between the executive and legislature became tense; the leadership of the executive was challenged; the administrative officers and politicians became political competitors; and adversarial party politics was developed. The Chinese involvement further complicated the dynamics of politics in Hong Kong.

TAIWAN'S ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IN EVOLUTIONARY PERSPECTIVE
: Entrepreneurship, Innovation Systems & Government
[Fu-Lai Tony Yu (ed)]
The book is divided into three parts, consisting of 13 chapters. They examine entrepreneurship, innovative systems and government policies in Taiwan. Part I explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and the economic development of Taiwan. Part II examines the innovation systems of Taiwan while Part III attempts to understand the role of the government in Taiwan’s economic transformation. Taiwan's economic success is well documented in mainstream neo-classical economic literatures. Since the end of the Second World War, Taiwan has transformed in around 60 years time from a farmland to a high tech industrial economy. This ‘miraculous’ performance has intrigued scholars to search for an explanation of Taiwan's success and more importantly, a development model for latecomer economies. It is generally admitted by scholars (including those from the neo-classical school) that Taiwan's economic success is, to a large extent, attributed to its dynamic entrepreneurs. However, economic studies on the role of entrepreneurship in the economic development of Taiwan have been few to date.

CHINA & ANTI-TERRORISM
[Simon Shen (ed)]
Books accounting for 9-11 and its aftermath have been overwhelming since 2001. Yet the Chinese response to anti-terrorism remains a relatively under-studied topic. This book attempts to fill such a vacuum by illustrating how on a local and global scale, the Chinese state and society interacted to crystallise their identity and see their potential power in the face of 9-11 and its fallout.

IMPACT OF CHINESE NAVAL MODERNIZATION ON THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY
[Ronald O'Rourke]
China’s rapidly developing military capabilities have forced US policy makers to reconsider their own military infrastructure. The primary concern of this book is to examine how China’s military modernisation will be factored into decisions about US Navy programs. Several elements of China’s military modernisation have potential implications for future required US Navy capabilities. These include theatre-range ballistic missiles (TBMs), land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), land-based aircraft, submarines, surface combatants, amphibious ships, naval mines, nuclear weapons, and possibly high-power microwave (HPM) devices. This book will examine how these elements and others will influence the future of the United States Navy.

UNRESTRICTED WARFARE
: China's Master Plan to Destroy America
[Colonel Qiao Liang & Colonel Wang Xiangsui]
As incredible as it may be to believe, three years before the September 11 bombing of the World Trade Center a Chinese military manual entitled 'Unrestricted Warfare' touted such an attack -- suggesting it would be difficult for the U.S. military to cope with. In reading China's military manual 'Unrestricted Warfare', you will learn that the events of September 11 were not a random act perpetrated by independent agents. Instead, Chinese military planners believe that terrorism is just one of the many tools at the hands of nations and their terrorist allies to wage total war against the United States. You will be surprised to learn: The two PLA colonels who authored Unrestricted Warfare have been hailed as heroes in China since September 11; The Chinese state-run propaganda machine is cashing in on the terror attacks ... producing books, films and video games glorifying the strikes as a humbling blow against an arrogant nation; Chinese Communist Party officials are saying that President Jiang Zemin has obsessively and gleefully watched and re-watched pictures of the aircraft crashing into the World Trade Center; The CIA's own translation agency reported that this book identifies the U.S. as China’s main enemy, and details how a weak nation can destroy America using unorthodox attacks -- like the 9-11 attacks. China is preparing itself and encouraging others to engage the U.S. in total war. The book is full of plans and strategies, from using computers, to smuggling illegal immigrants, to manipulating the stock markets, to influencing the U.S. media, to using weapons of mass destruction -- all to destroy America. Recent press reports indicate that China has assisted and continues to assist militarily and economically the Taliban and al-Qaeda – even after September 11. The doctrine of total war outlined in 'Unrestricted Warfare' clearly demonstrates that the People's Republic of China is preparing to confront the United States and our allies by conducting "asymmetrical" or multidimensional attacks on almost every aspect of our social, economic and political life. The media and Congress are keeping a lid on this book because of the implications of U.S.-China economic and trade relations. But now you can bypass them by getting a copy yourself!

BUDDHA IS DEAD
: Nietzsche & the Dawn of European Zen
[Manu Bazzano]
Drawing on Zen as well as on Nietzsche’s thought and its ramifications in and for western culture, this book is a fervent call for a re-visioning of philosophy as vocation. The author is critical of the status quo and committed to intellectual integrity; the result is a creative and adventurous enterprise which is no longer exclusively identified with academia or with the methodology of logic. Filtered through Nietzsche’s hammer -- by which he sounded out gods old and new -- Buddhism in the West can avoid the pitfalls which emerged during its gestation period in the twentieth century: otherworldly spiritualism, conservatism, denial of the body. The philosophy of European Zen advocated by Manu Bazzano in 'Buddha is Dead: Nietzsche and the Dawn of European Zen' is an unconditional affirmation of living and dying to their fullest. It is an extraordinary fertile viewpoint that will be appreciated by all those who are interested in Eastern philosophy and religions, and who seek life-affirming wisdom.
REVIEW: “Illuminates the common radicalism, non-conformity and insistence on honesty and integrity that underpin what is most challenging and provocative in the two traditions of Buddhism in general (and Zen Buddhism in particular) and the tradition (or anti-tradition) in Western philosophy that finds its most exultant spokesman in the figure of Friedrich Nietzsche.” -- Stephen Batchelor, author of the bestselling Buddhism Without Beliefs

CHINESE RELIGIONS
: Beliefs & Practices
[Jeaneane Fowler & Merv Fowler]
This book brings together the studies of Jeaneane Fowler in Taoism, Chinese popular religion and the broader canvas of Chinese cosmogony, and those of Merv Fowler in Confucianism, Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism. 'Chinese Religions' requires no previous knowledge and thereby serves as an introduction to the religions of China, and places it in the wider context of Chinese history and philosophy. The facets of Chinese religions are as broad, multilayered and varied as the geographical vastness of China itself, yet so many Chinese beliefs have found their way into the West -- the theory of yin and yang, the I Ching, the Tao Te Ching are good examples. One of the greatest characteristics of Chinese religions is that they encompass virtually every avenue of religious thought throughout the long span of Chinese pre-historic and historical pathways.

READINGS IN EASTERN RELIGION, 2ND EDITION
[Harold Coward, Ronald Neufeldt & Eva K Neumaier]
This popular anthology, originally developed for use in introductory courses on the study of religious traditions of the East, offers a selection of readings from primary texts of India, China, and Japan. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the changing needs of students. Existing introductions have been expanded and new introductions added to provide a better sense of the context for the excerpts as well as a better sense of historical developments. A section on Ch'an/Zen and excerpts from the writings of Ge Hong, representing the central concerns of Daoism, have been included. As in the first edition, a concerted effort has been made to present larger excerpts than conventional anthologies generally provide. This allows the student to gain a better sense of the flavour and historical development of the texts and stories. While the material is presented thematically, within each section it is presented chronologically, as religious developments seen through primary texts are more memorable and understandable if they can be seen or read within a historical framework.

CONFUCIAN MORAL SELF CULTIVATION
: Second Edition
[Philip J Ivanhoe]
A revision of the Peter Lang edition of 1993. A concise and accessible introduction to the evolution of the concept of moral self-cultivation in the Chinese Confucian tradition, this volume begins with an explanation of the pre-philosophical development of ideas central to this concept, followed by an examination of the specific treatment of self cultivation in the philosophy of Kongzi ('Confucius'), Mengzi ('Mencius'), Xunzi, Zhu Xi, Wang Yangmig, Yan Yuan and Dai Zhen. In addition to providing a survey of fundamental importance to the tradition, Ivanhoe also relates their concern with moral self-cultivation to a number of topics in the Western ethical tradition. Bibliography and index are included.

ETHICS IN THE CONFUCIAN TRADITION
: The Thoughts of Mencius & Wang Yangming: 2nd Edition
[Philip J Ivanhoe]
This volume serves both as an introduction to the thought of Mengzi (Mencius) and Wang Yangming, and as a comparison of their views. By examining issues held in common and central to both thinkers, Ivanhoe illustrates how the Confucian tradition was both continued and transformed by Wang Yangming, and shows the extent to which he was influenced by Buddhism. Topics explored are: the nature of morality; human nature; the nature and origin of wickedness; self cultivation; and sagehood. In addition to revised versions of each of these original chapters, Ivanhoe also includes a new chapter on Confucius' view of the Way, a new Conclusion, bibliography, and index. FATHER & SON IN CONFUCIANISM & CHRISTIANITY
: A Comparative Study of Xunzi & Paul
[Yanxia Zhao]
Confucianism and Christianity are the foundation of Chinese and Western culture. The father-son relation is at the centre of Confucian thinking and the ethical natural relationship is the model for other familial, social and political relationships. The divine father-son relationship between God and Jesus is also at the centre of Christian consideration and likewise is the model of Christian familial, social and political relationships. The particular appeal of this book is to offer a religious and cultural comparative study from this most cardinal and crucial relationship. To date, scholarship has opined that the Confucian father-son relationship established on a consanguineous basis has no comparable aspects with the spiritual based Christian divine father-son relationship. The author provides a compelling argument, backed up by close scriptural and religious readings, to overturn this longstanding perception.

FOUR BOOKS
: The Basic Teachings of the Later Confucian Tradition
[Daniel K Gardner]
This compact volume shows how the Four Books -- the Greater Learning, the Analects, the Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean -- have been read and understood by the Chinese since the twelfth century. Included are selected passages in translation, accompanied by Daniel Gardner's comments and the selected commentary of Zhu Xi (1130-1200), the renowned Neo-Confucian thinker. The book provides an introduction to the later imperial Confucian tradition; introduces the reader to Zhu Xi's commentarial understanding of the Four Books; suggests how Neo-Confucians, like Zhu Xi, through commentary, gave coherence and meaning to the Four Books collectively; and illustrates the nature of the standard educational curriculum.

VIRTUE, NATURE & MORAL AGENCY IN THE XUNZI
[T C Kline III & Philip J Ivanhoe (eds)]
Xunzi is traditionally identified as the third philosopher in the Confucian tradition, after Confucius and Mencius. Unlike the work of his two predecessors, he wrote complete essays in which he defends his own interpretation of the Confucian position and attacks the positions of others. Within the early Chinese tradition, Xunzi's writings are arguably the most sophisticated and philosophically developed. The richness of philosophical content has led to a lively discussion of his philosophy among contemporary scholars. This volume collects some of the most accessible and important contemporary essays on the thought of Xunzi, with an introduction that provides historical background, philosophical context, and relates each of the selections to Xunzi'a philosophy as a whole and to the themes of virtue, nature, and moral agency. These themes are also discussed in relation to Western philosophy concerns.
