ACCOUNTING FOR LAW STUDENTS & PRACTITIONERS
[Sheeda Kalideen & Lester Sullivan]
Few professions are free of the need to understand accounting, least of all the legal profession. Legal accounting is a category all on its own, because attorneys are expected to keep trust accounts for most of their clients, deal with conveyancing and understand the issues around shared accounts -- whether at a corporate or domestic level. This book deals with the fundamentals of accounting, such as debits and credits and how income statements and balance sheets are created. The book also takes you through the transfer journal, bank reconciliations, VAT, correspondent accounts, accounting in conveyancing matters, legislation applying to attorneys' accounting and partners' capital accounts. Easy-to-understand examples clearly explain the principles involved.

ACCOUNTING STANDARDS
: 12th Edition
[HRB Oppermann, SF Booysen, CS Binnekade & JGI Oberholster]
"Accounting Standards" introduces students to general accounting principles and the disclosure requirements of company financial statements. The emphasis is on the requirements of Accounting Statements and Interpretations issued by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, which form the basis of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP) in South Africa. Incorporated into this latest edition are the changes brought about by new accounting standards, issued as a consequence of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants' Harmonisation and Improvement of Accounting Standards Project. The book is intended to satisfy the specific requirements of students and to reduce the workload of educators.

ACROSS THE OCEANS
: Development of Overseas Business Information Transmission 1815-1875
[Seija-Riitta Laakso]
In the early 19th century, the only way to transmit information was to send letters across the oceans by sailing ships or across land by horse and coach. Growing world trade created a need and technological development introduced options to improve general information transmission. Starting in the 1830s, a network of steamships, railways, canals and telegraphs was gradually built to connect different parts of the world. The book explains how the rate of information circulation increased many times over as mail systems were developed. Nevertheless, regional differences were huge. While improvements on the most significant trade routes between Europe, the Americas and East India were considered crucial, distant places such as California or Australia had to wait for gold fever to become important enough for regular communications. The growth of passenger services, especially for emigrants, was a major factor increasing the number of mail sailings. The study covers the period from the Napoleonic wars to the foundation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and includes the development of overseas business information transmission from the days of sailing ships to steamers and the telegraph.

AFRICAN GROWTH & OPPORTUNITY ACT
: An Implementation Guide
[Office of the United States Trade Representative]
The African Growth and Opportunity Act offers a wide variety of benefits to businesses, workers, manufacturers, and farmers in eligible countries. It is important to remember that the Act can only offer opportunities. African countries are encouraged to seize the opportunities provided in the Act and to create enabling environments to strengthen prospects for expanded trade and investment. This new book focuses on the Act’s trade preference benefits. The Guide is divided into 10 Chapters. Chapter 2 provides answers to frequently asked questions such as 'how can I determine whether the products I manufacture and want to export could benefit from the Act?'. Other chapters contain information on the specific trade benefits available and on the eligibility criteria that must be met for a country to receive these benefits. Chapter 8 provides a brief summary of other provisions of the Act and Chapter 10 provides a time line of key dates. Information on general US agricultural market access is provided in Chapter 9.

ANTI-CAPITALISTIC MENTALITY
[Ludwig von Mises; Edited by Bettina Bien Greaves]
In The Anti-capitalistic Mentality, the respected economist Ludwig von Mises plainly explains the causes of the irrational fear and hatred many intellectuals and others feel for capitalism. In five concise chapters, he traces the causation of the misunderstandings and resultant fears that cause resistance to economic development and social change. He enumerates and rebuts the economic arguments against and the psychological and social objections to economic freedom in the form of capitalism. Written during the heyday of twentieth-century socialism, this work provides the reader with lucid and compelling insights into human reactions to capitalism.

APPLIED BUSINESS STATISTICS
: Methods & Excel-Based Applications: Second Edition
[Trevor Wegner]
Book & CD. This is an introductory Statistics text written specifically for Management students who require an understanding of the role of Statistics in analysing business data from the areas of Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Production and Logistics. This text shows the importance of Statistics as a decision support tool in management decision making. Emphasis is therefore placed on (i) the data requirements for the various techniques and issues of data quality; (ii) identifying likely application areas through numerous illustrative examples; (iii) noting the limitations of techniques for decision analysis, and, of great importance, (iv) the valid management interpretation of statistical findings. The text is divided into three major sections -- exploratory data analysis, statistical inferences, and statistical modelling -- with each section focusing on a different role of Statistics as a decision support tool. Overall, the primary focus of the text is to empower students of management with statistical decision making skills so that they become active participants rather than passive observers in business situations where statistical findings are reported and discussed as part of a management decision making process. A new feature of this edition is the use of computer software such as Excel to perform statistical analysis. This text illustrates Excel's statistical capabilities through numerous worked examples. It also gives management students the opportunity to develop hands-on familiarisation with Excel's statistical capabilities by applying them to datasets of business problems which are available on the accompanying CD. By having a working knowledge of Excel's statistical capabilities, managers can design and conduct their own statistical analysis, thus building confidence in their use of statistical analysis and findings. The text assumes only a basic level of mathematical ability. Each statistical technique is developed through business-related worked illustrations. In this way, a student can readily grasp the basic concept of the technique as well as see how it would apply in practice. This approach emphasises the strong business application orientation of the text, hence its carefully chosen title of Applied Business Statistics.

BRAND MANAGEMENT
: Strategy, Measurement & Yield Analysis
[Rajagopal (ed)]
Building a powerful brand requires determining the tangible characteristics of the offerings that carry the brand name and the benefits the customers accrue from those benefits and the psychological or emotional benefits of the products. This notion may be described as what 'value' means to a typical loyal customer; and what, ultimately, is the essential nature and character of the brand over time. Brand Management is an advanced marketing course that will prepare students to lead a brand-centred marketing team in the consumer products/services arena. The emphasis in the book is on marketing plans and day-to-day decision-making. Marketing decisions are usually made in a context of imperfect information, decision models that combine analysis with judgement, and a marketplace that is fast-changing. Innovative and groundbreaking ways of thinking about branding are constantly developing and brand architecture is anew strategic process evolved in this field.

BRANDED!
: How the 'Certification Revolution' is Transforming Global Corporations
[Michael E Conroy]
Making responsible social and environmental choices has not always been a first priority for many corporations, but recent history has changed all that. Small but mighty NGOs, using 21st Century global communications, are nipping at the heels of corporations caught in unethical and irresponsible practices. NGO "market campaigns" are moving these companies toward the higher standard now demanded by their clients, their consumers, and society as a whole. The lever that moves these giants is the risk of destroying their carefully built "brands" if they fail to recognise their "moral liability" and clean up their practices. "Branded!" outlines the ability of NGOs to affect corporate markets. It shows how the development of certification systems for corporate social and environmental practices has created some intriguing questions: Why are retail giants paying premiums for ethically-produced products and not overcharging their customers? How have NGOs gained such power and credibility? What are the challenges of these new modes of corporate accountability for both NGOs and corporations? What are the unexpected opportunities for newly accountable corporations? This is a "must-read" book for corporate executives, NGOs and concerned consumers. It is rich with vignettes of firms, NGOs, campaigns, failures, successes, memorable personalities and hard-fought battles.

BREAKING THE MUSASHI CODE
: Transcending Competition Through Visionary Strategy
[Matthew C Heim, Ph.D.]
Matthew Heim has finally cracked the code in achieving what so many business leaders have sought for years. In his unprecedented East-meets-West strategic planning approach he explains how to rise above the competition by applying the ageless Samurai teachings in Miyamoto Musashi's 'Book of Five Rings', and by harnessing the talents and wisdom of every person in the workforce. The unique strategic visioning process described in this book, one that has helped organisations of all kinds to transcend the old command-and-control paradigm, is bound to become the new way of developing strategy and conducting business in the 21st Century. This book introduces the historical elements of visionary strategy, along with the new breakthroughs in systems-thinking that render the old competition-based ways of doing business obsolete. 'Breaking the Musashi Code' also provides the reader with a step-by-step approach towards the birthing of new visionary ideas in companies of all sizes and industries.

BUSINESS ETHICS IN FOCUS
[Laura A Parrish (ed)]
Business ethics is a form of the art of applied ethics that examines ethical rules and principles within a commercial context, the various moral or ethical problems that can arise in a business setting, and any special duties or obligations that apply to persons who are engaged in commerce. Business ethics can be both a normative and a descriptive discipline. As a corporate practice and a career specialisation, the field is primarily normative. In academia descriptive approaches are also taken. The range and quantity of business ethical issues reflects the degree to which business is perceived to be at odds with non-economic social values. Historically, interest in business ethics accelerated dramatically during the 1980s and 1990s, both within major corporations and within academia. For example, today most major corporate websites lay emphasis on commitment to promoting non-economic social values under a variety of headings (eg: ethics codes, social responsibility charters). In some cases, corporations have redefined their core values in the light of business ethical considerations (e.g. BP's "beyond petroleum" environmental tilt). This book presents and discusses new and important issues in the field.

BUSINESS RESEARCH MADE EASY
[Rene Pellissier, MBA, Ph.D.]
Are you interested in postgraduate studies but worried about the research component? Are you faced with a complex business problem and do not know how to go about solving it? With changes in the world of work come new theories, new meanings and new applications. These require scientific methodologies and research strategies to obtain data and analyse it in such a way that the outcomes are reliable and generalisable. Research is synonymous with knowledge-creating which, in turn, is linked to innovation. Both of these are critical for economic and social development, as well as business development. But not all business practitioners are good researchers. And the broad landscape of the modern business world begs for a set of plans and models that can simultaneously provide stability and a breadth of development. This book offers this. The book provides easy referencing to most research techniques in the business domain. Depending on the problem at hand, there are numerous quantitative and qualitative methods described, as well as ways and means to write down the main problem. Beginners and specialists are reminded how to read and write academically and how to become good researchers.

CAPITALISM
: A Condensed Version
[Arthur Seldon]
In this condensed version of his masterpiece, "Capitalism", Arthur Seldon explains why, despite its apparent imperfections, the market system is infinitely preferable to the alternatives. The market system has, since the eighteenth century, brought enormous gains in living standards, in contradiction to the Marxist theories that predicted capitalism’s collapse. The institution of property rights has facilitated trade and investment, whilst the price mechanism has enabled people to benefit from dispersed knowledge about individual preferences. Yet politicians, needing to win votes in the short-term, have largely failed to recognise the benefits of a market system with the minimum of government intervention. The development of the welfare state has been disastrous, almost destroying the voluntary provision of health and education, whilst creating institutions that serve producer interests at the expense of consumers. Seldon's message is clear; if capitalism is to yield its best results the political process must be confined to the minimal duties of the state. This condensed version of Capitalism includes a foreword by the late Milton Friedman, an introduction by John Blundell and Philip Booth, and commentaries by James Bartholomew and D.R. Myddelton.

CATERING & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
[Piyush Bhatnagar & Suvarna Sable]
Catering management is the art of providing food and drink aesthetically and scientifically to a large number of people in a satisfactory and cost effective manner. Management can be defined as the art of bringing together available resources including the abilities of different people and organizing them in a scientific and orderly manner, to achieve the desired goals of the organization, while promoting individual aspirations as well. In its simplest form, management is the process by which people work together to achieve common goals. It is, however, a continuous process of establishing objectives, putting together all available human and material resources in the best possible manner, in an atmosphere of cooperation and goodwill.

CHINA'S CURRENCY & ECONOMIC ISSUES
[Wayne M Morrison, Marc Labonte & Jonathan E Sanford]
China has a policy of pegging its currency (the yuan) to the U.S. dollar. If the yuan is undervalued against the dollar, there are likely to be both benefits and costs to the U.S. economy. It would mean that imported Chinese goods are cheaper than they would be if the yuan were market determined. This lowers prices for U.S. consumers and diminishes inflationary pressures. It also lowers prices for U.S. firms that use imported inputs (such as parts) in their production, making such firms more competitive. Critics of China’s peg point to the large and growing U.S. trade deficit with China as evidence that the yuan is undervalued and harmful to the U.S. economy. The relationship is more complex, for a number of reasons. First, while China runs a large trade surplus with the United States, it runs a significant trade deficit with the rest of the world. Second, an increasing level of Chinese exports are from foreign invested companies in China that have shifted production there to take advantage of China’s abundant low cost labour. Third, the deficit masks the fact that China has become one of the fastest growing markets for U.S. exports. Finally, the trade deficit with China accounted for 23% of the sum of total U.S. bilateral trade deficits in 2004, indicating that the overall trade deficit is not caused by the exchange rate policy of one country, but rather the shortfall between U.S. saving and investment. This book presents a coherent examination of the details behind China’s currency policies as they relate to outside factors.

CHINA-UNITED STATES TRADE
: Inextricably Intertwined?
[Barton V Celone (ed)]
U.S.-China economic ties have expanded substantially over the past several years. Total U.S.-China trade, which totaled only $5 billion in 1980, rose to $343 billion in 2006. China is also now the 2nd largest U.S. trading partner, its 2nd largest source of U.S. imports, and its 4th largest export market. With a huge population and a rapidly expanding economy, China is a potentially huge market for U.S. exporters. However, economic relations have become strained over a number of issues, including China's large and growing trade surpluses with the United States; its failure to fully implement its World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments, especially in regards to intellectual property rights (IPR); its refusal to adopt a floating currency system; and its maintenance of industrial policies and other practices deemed unfair and/or harmful to various U.S. economic sectors. China is a major supplier of consumer products (such as toys), and an increasingly important supplier of various food products. Reports of unsafe seafood, pet food, toys, tires, and other products imported from China over the past year have raised concern in the United States over the health, safety, and quality of imported Chinese products. This book presents important analyses which deal in part with whether the US economy would seriously falter with a substantial decrease in trade activity with China.

CLIMATE CHANGE & THE MARKET ECONOMY
[Colin Robinson (ed)]
The idea is now widespread that damaging, man-made climate change is occurring. Massive counter-action by governments is the remedy usually prescribed. But there is considerable uncertainty surrounding climate change forecasts and there are dangers in 'big government' approaches to the apparent problem. This book explores the processes by which conclusions about climate change are reached and discusses market-based approaches to dealing with global environmental issues.

COLLECTED WORKS OF ARMEN A ALCHIAN, 2-VOLUME SET
[Armen A Alchian; Edited by Daniel Benjamin]
Liberty Fund is proud to present, in two volumes, 'The Collected Works of Armen A Alchian', bringing together Alchian's most influential essays, articles, editorials, and lectures to provide a comprehensive record of his thinking on a broad range of topics in economics. As various and as specific as some of this collection's topics are, they are unified, as editor Daniel K Benjamin writes, by "both a coherent methodology for doing economics, and a view of the world that celebrates the importance of individual liberty." Benjamin goes on to state that, in Alchian's view, "the purpose of theory is never theory in and of itself; it is instead to help individuals understand the world around them."

COMMENTARY ON THE LAW OF PRIZE & BOOTY, WITH ASSOCIATED DOCUMENTS
[Hugo Grotius]
The history of "Commentary on the Law of Prize and Booty "is complex. When Grotius’s personal papers were auctioned in The Hague in 1864, Dutch scholars discovered that his famous Mare Liberum was just one chapter in a manuscript of 163 folios, written in justification of Jacob van Heemskerck’s capture of the Santa Catarina, a Portuguese merchantman, in the Straits of Singapore in February 1603. A prominent Dutch historian of the nineteenth century, Robert Fruin, persuaded the classical scholar H. G. Hamaker to transcribe and publish it, and the Latin text was issued in 1868. This Liberty Fund edition is based on the one prepared by Gwladys L. Williams and Walter H. Zeydel for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. It combines a revised text and new material, making it a highly attractive edition of a work that is difficult to obtain.

COMMERCE & GOVERNMENT
: Considered in Their Mutual Relationship
[Étienne Bonnot, Abbé de Condillac. Translated by Seelagh Eltis]
This text covers such topics as value, money, agriculture, domestic and foreign trade, war, labour, interest rates, luxuries, and the various government policies that affect these subjects. The theme that unites these disparate subjects is liberty. As Condillac writes near the end of the work, the means to eradicate all the abuses and injustices of government is "to give trade full, complete and permanent freedom". In their preface to the 1997 edition, Shelagh and Walter Eltis wrote, "English language readers . . . will find . . . that the case for competitive market economics has rarely been presented more powerfully."

COMPETITIVENESS, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & ECONOMIC GROWTH
[Janez Prasnikar (ed)]
Globalisation of the economy and in particular the competition of low-priced goods from Asia have confronted Europe with an important question of what are its real competitive capabilities, sustainability of its economy and of the values of typical Europeans. The famous Lisbon Strategy (2000) has been an attempt to answer this by creating the knowledge economy, where providing conditions for establishment of the common European market and investing in R&D and knowledge would be of crucial importance. This book analyses the Lisbon Strategy from various perspectives. The first part of the book -- Increasing Companies’ Competitiveness by means of R&D Activities and Innovations -- discusses the importance of both for economic growth. The instruments of the Lisbon Strategy are presented and then critically evaluated. It is shown that every country needs its own 'Lisbon' strategy, which would emphasise individual ways of achieving higher competitive levels. . It is in the spirit of this that we present two cases of small open economies, the Netherlands and Slovenia. In the second part -- Structural Reforms, Stabilisation, and Social Cohesion in Slovenia -- we discuss the interconnections between various mechanisms and government policies aimed at achieving faster economic growth in a technology follower country, such as Slovenia. The third part -- The innovative firm -- presents few case studies. The open innovation model is used to present the case of Gorenje, d.d., a company that is active in a mature industry. We discuss innovations in tourism, which, similar as most other service industries, has no established place in the innovation literature. The last articles in this part discuss the creation of new technological companies. The fourth part of the book -- The Company Social Responsibility -- embarks upon a currently very hot topic, which deals with the question of whether a company, in addition to achieving appropriate financial results, is also in other terms responsible for social environment.

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN BUSINESS ETHICS
[Mary W Vilcox & Thomas O Mohan (eds)]
For example, today most major corporate websites lay emphasis on commitment to promoting non-economic social values under a variety of headings (e.g. ethics codes, social responsibility charters). In some cases, corporations have redefined their core values in the light of business ethical considerations. Catching business ethics in action, however, remains a seldom-spotted nugget for in reality it depends on the characters of the characters.

CORPORATE MECHANIC
: The Analytical Strategist's Guide
[J Magliolo]
This book represents the cutting-edge of the theory and practice of business strategy -- written in Jacques Magliolo's trademark exciting and accessible style. As the author says, many companies fail in South Africa for lack of a strategy, and in this text Magliolo -- himself an experienced business analyst and strategist presents entrepreneurs, corporate owners and managers with the tools for creating a plan that will enable them to survive and grow a profitable enterprise in a rapidly changing and hostile global corporate environment. Using a blend of theory and practical exercises, the author lays the foundation for creating a business plan, the keys to which are detailed research, due diligence and proper valuation. "The Corporate Mechanic" includes the author's unique model for devising, implementing and monitoring strategy, called The Chairman's Office. Techniques for carrying out research, assessing corporate problems, identifying new trends and conducting thorough due diligence are highlighted throughout the book with practical examples. Topics covered include: the importance of strategy; strategic techniques; troubleshooting; corporate deals; due diligence; valuation. The book also contains a glossary of important terms and a detailed case study of a valuation of a company.

DATA MODELING
: Theory & Practice
[Graeme Simsion]
This book is for practitioners and academics who have learned the conventions and rules of data modelling and are looking for a deeper understanding of the discipline. The coverage of theory includes a detailed review of the extensive literature on data modelling and logical database design, referencing nearly 500 publications, with a strong focus on their relevance to practice. The practice component incorporates the largest-ever study of data modelling practitioners, involving over 450 participants in interviews, surveys and data modelling tasks. The results challenge many long-standing held assumptions about data modelling and will be of interest to academics and practitioners alike. Graeme Simsion brings to the book the practical perspective and intellectual clarity that have made his "Data Modelling Essentials" a classic in the field. He begins with a question about the nature of data modelling (design or description), and uses it to illuminate such issues as the definition of data modelling, its philosophical underpinnings, inputs and deliverables, the necessary behaviours and skills, the role of creativity, product diversity, quality measures, personal styles, and the differences between experts and novices. "Data Modeling: Theory and Practice" is essential reading for anyone involved in data modelling practice, research, or teaching.

DATA QUALITY ASSESSMENT
[Arkady Maydanchik]
Imagine a group of prehistoric hunters armed with stone-tipped spears. Their primitive weapons made hunting large animals, such as mammoths, dangerous work. Over time, however, a new breed of hunters developed. They would stretch the skin of a previously killed mammoth on the wall and throw their spears, while observing which spear, thrown from which angle and distance, penetrated the skin the best. The data gathered helped them make better spears and develop better hunting strategies. Quality data is the key to any advancement, whether it is from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age. Or from the Information Age to whatever Age comes next. The success of corporations and government institutions largely depends on the efficiency with which they can collect, organise, and utilise data about products, customers, competitors, and employees. Fortunately, improving your data quality does not have to be such a mammoth task. This book is a must read for anyone who needs to understand, correct, or prevent data quality issues in their organisation. Skipping theory and focusing purely on what is practical and what works, this text contains a proven approach to identifying, warehousing, and analysing data errors. Master techniques in data profiling and gathering metadata, designing data quality rules, organising rule and error catalogues, and constructing the dimensional data quality scorecard. David Wells, Director of Education of the Data Warehousing Institute, says "This is one of those books that marks a milestone in the evolution of a discipline. Arkady's insights and techniques fuel the transition of data quality management from art to science -- from crafting to engineering. From deep experience, with thoughtful structure, and with engaging style Arkady brings the discipline of data quality to practitioners."

DIFFERENTIAL RATES, RESIDUAL INFORMATION SETS & TRANSACTIONAL ALGEBRAS
[Rodolfo Apreda]
Both current theory and practice in financial markets are undergoing a strong pressure to include recently developed fields of inquiry, namely market microstructure, transaction costs and asymmetric information. This claim has been taking shape after nearly thirty years of worthy research and empirical development that laid sound groundwork to those promising subjects. The purpose of this book is to introduce a new approach to work out the returns from financial assets. Firstly, by means of the concept of differential rates, which allow the breaking down of the ordinary rate of return into components that are rates on their own. Secondly, residual information sets are built up to match each differential rate with its underlying information.

DOES BRITAIN NEED THE FSA?
((Hobart Paper Series))
[Philip Booth & Terry Arthur]
It is difficult to imagine financial markets without a state regulator. But it was not so long ago that financial markets in Britain developed their own regulation, without government intervention. This monograph examines the economic case for a statutory regulator of investment transactions and finds it wanting. Private stock exchanges can provide regulation at less cost and less intrusively than the FSA.

DYNAMICS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE & ECONOMY
: An Inquiry into Emerging Markets
[Rajagopal]
There is a fast change observed in the world markets resulting into the new emerging markets across the countries. In this century China, India and Latin America and the emerging market based economies in Eastern Europe promise new opportunities for global trade. The European Union provided an outlet, initially for unskilled-labour intensive products of Central and Eastern European countries and more recently for skilled-labour intensive and technology-based products. Knowledge-intensive imports from the European Union have also contributed to industrial realignment in the Central European countries. The growing trade agreements in the countries indicate some likelihood of success because when the level of tariff and non-tariff barriers is already low, a preferential agreement is more likely to have an adverse impact than a beneficial one. However, the reduction in the tariff barriers, duties and liberalisation process worldwide has further given a stimulus to the international marketing across regional boundaries. This book discusses a research analysis based on extensive survey of literature and statistical analysis of the data available from secondary sources and argues the strategic partnership model developed by analysing the functional gap-map in reference to the political, economic, legal and trade related factors. The analysis emphasises the evolution of productivity and exports, and discusses factors variability in the transitional economies and emerging markets on the basis of spatial and temporal data. The research study analysed in the book discusses economic integration between two economies, distinctively one central, with a large local market, and the other peripheral, with a small local market.

ECONOMETRIC & GAME THEORETIC MODEL OF COMMON POOL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
: People's Participation in Forest Management in India
[Wietze Lise]
This book provides a manual for undertaking research into the role of people in commonly shared resources, like forests, water bodies, fisheries and grazing pastures. The method in this book constructs indicators for the level of participation, net benefits from participating, forest dependence, forest quality, inequality, wealth and social differences. It can be concluded that (1) the studied organisations for forest management vary considerably in their effectiveness and (2) voluntary participation is most likely to emerge among the villagers who depend highly on the forest and perceive the quality of the forest as good.

ECONOMIC CORRUPTION
: Detection, Costs & Prevention
[Federico N De Luca (ed)]
Corruption has been around for a very long time and will be around in the future unless governments can figure out effective ways to combat it. This is not going to be easy. Although the study of the causes and consequences of corruption has a long history in economics, going back 30 years to seminal contributions on what economists call rent seeking, related empirical work on quantifying the extent of corruption and putting a dollar sign on its economic effects has been limited. This is hardly surprising since most corruption is clandestine. Also, determining just how efficient government institutions are is not what would be called an exact science. As a consequence, corruption is notoriously hard to measure and empirical economic research on the question is fairly meagre. The prevailing view is that corruption is harmful to economic growth. This new book presents the latest research from around the globe.

ECONOMIC FREEDOM & INTERVENTIONISM
: An Anthology of Articles & Essays
[Ludwig von Mises; Edited by Bettina Bien Greaves]
Both a primer of the fundamental thought of Ludwig von Mises and an anthology of the writings of perhaps the best-known exponent of what is now known as the Austrian School of economics. This volume contains forty-seven articles edited by Mises scholar Bettina Bien Greaves. Among them are Mises's expositions of the role of government, his discussion of inequality of wealth, inflation, socialism, welfare, and economic education, as well as his exploration of the 'deeper' significance of economics as it affects seemingly non-economic relations between human beings. These papers are essential reading for students of economic freedom and the science of human action.

ECONOMIC TSUNAMI
: China's Car Industry Will Sweep Away Western Car Makers
[Dr Kevin Baker]
The car markets around the world are about to get hit by a large quantity of cheap, quality new cars and car components, and the impact of those cars will be as sudden and as forceful as a tsunami. The surge of competition will be a result of the ever-accelerating development of the Chinese motor vehicle manufacturers. Those manufacturers were comparatively small and technologically inferior during the latter part of the twentieth century, but in the new millennium they have developed with surprising speed -- doubling their output around every five years until in the very near future they will not only be dominant in China but will also be major players on the world stage. The motor vehicle manufacturing industry in many western countries has been faltering in recent years. It has been under enormous pressure even in current world trading conditions -- even before the impact of Chinese cars. This book presents research into the development of car industry infrastructure in China and the implications of the increasing efficiency of its auto manufacturing industries, particularly the impact of the Chinese industry on the manufacturing industry and markets in Australia and other western countries. The author has held senior positions in Chinese universities from Shanghai to Chengdu over the past fourteen years, and as part of his duties has supervised over a hundred postgraduate students completing dissertations on management and economics, including research into varied aspects of the car industry. Drawing on that experience, he has developed the thesis that an influx of cheap, quality cars and car components will soon transform the world car making industry, just as a flood of cheap, quality motorcycles brought about the virtual demise of Western motorcycle manufacturers a generation ago.

ECONOMICS WITHOUT FRONTIERS
[Charles K Rowley (ed)]
This final volume of 'The Selected Works of Gordon Tullock' series, presents an eclectic mix of essays by Gordon Tullock. The first three sections highlight his pioneering application of rational choice theory to fields outside the usual purview of economics, including criminal behaviour, sociobiology, and behaviour in non-human societies. The final four sections, all concerned with more traditional areas of economics, still show Tullock at his innovative best, challenging conventional thinking in such fields as public finance and monetary economics.

ECONOMICS, FINANCE & LAW ON MNES
[Georgios I Zekos (ed)]
Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) are key actors within the world economy alongside the states. Is there currently a legal personality for MNEs in international law? Law reflects moral connections and it is not static which means that its content is shaped according to new situations and demands. In many situations MNEs have already been acceded as subjects of international law -- Iran versus US claims tribunal 1981 . There is a tendency to admit MNEs as actors in international law. It could be said that MNEs are not in position to freely decide if they accept their responsibilities according to international law and especially in the human right field. There is a need for more transparency in MNEs actions. MNEs are key actors in globalisation and they have a duty to act in conformity with international law. This author thinks that there is a need in distinguishing between the MNE as an economic entity and so allowing the national law of establishment, the private international law and the international commercial law to deal with the economic matters and the MNE as a whole unit (parent company with all subsidiaries regardless its separate establishment in various states under national laws) an international social policy actor in globalisation whose actions affect the global world.

ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE
: Models & Analyses for Information Systems Decision Making
[Pntus Johnson & Mathias Ekstedt]
In the last decade, enterprise architecture has grown into an established approach for management of the information systems in an organisation. Enterprise architecture is model based, in the sense that diagrammatic descriptions of the systems and their environment constitute the core of the approach. The purpose of enterprise architecture models is to support the making of rational decisions about information systems in an organisation. This book emphasises the decision-supporting potential of enterprise architecture.

ENTREPRENEURIAL MANAGEMENT & PUBLIC POLICY
: 2nd Edition
[Van R Johnston (ed)]
"Entrepreneurial Management & Public Policy" tells the unfolding story of the paradigm shift from sovereignty, the public interest, and citizen-based governance and government; towards privatisation, contracts, and customer-based government and business. It analyses the benefits and dysfunctions of substituting market-based efficiency (output over input) policies and decisions for those grounded in the public interest and based on effectiveness (output over standards, eg: safety and security). It also reminds us that constant vigilance has become more significant when vested interests often disappear in this increasingly complex environment where sector blurring has become a common experience. Leading scholars analyse the public and private sector theories, practices, systems, networks, infrastructures and results of privatising public policy over the last few decades. This catalytic shift emerged from the: re-engineering, reinventing, total quality management, deregulation, contracting out, franchising, competition, managerialism, and entrepreneurialism that have impacted governments, budgets, citizens, contractors, governance systems, and public policy so significantly that it has transformed the field. Specific focus is placed on the management, governance, ethics, entrepreneurialism and performance of the following, among others: FEMA and emergency management; the IRS and service quality in the internet economy; the greening of industry through government-supervised, self-regulation; Homeland security and safety from terrorism; market driven academic management; NASA and its management of the space shuttle program; and, ethical entrepreneurial financial management. This second edition helps students of business and public policy to analyse the challenges and opportunities involved in optimally managing the costs and benefits of competitive efficiency with those of more collaborative effectiveness, for the good of citizens and customers in an increasingly market driven and entrepreneurially-oriented public policy environment. This unfolding 21st century reality calls for a new type of visionary and ethical leaders and managers with both public and private sector skills who can embrace both the challenges and the opportunities presented in order to optimally perform in our increasingly complex entrepreneurial public policy environment.

EUROPE AFTER THE 'NO' VOTES
: Mapping a New Economic Path
[Patrick A Messerlin]
Professor Patrick Messerlin of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, argues that the NO votes in the French and Dutch referenda on the proposed EU constitution highlight the need to design an economic agenda for the future of the EU congruent with its fundamental purpose. The NO votes show that the EU cannot be a European 'super-state' providing a wide range of social policies, but must return to the modest role originally set out in the slim Treaty of Rome. Professor Messerlin shows how liberalisation of agriculture, manufacturing and services, and engagement with widely held fears about globalisation, must be an essential part of future reform of the EU. Former European Commissioner Lord Brittan and leading European scholars Professor John Gillingham and Professor Pedro Schwartz provide commentaries on Messerlin’s analysis. This book will prove essential reading for those concerned with the future of the European Union as it maps out a positive way forward for the EU after its turbulent recent past.

EUROPE AT THE CROSSROADS
[Basil R Jones (ed)]
As a continent, the economy of Europe is currently the largest on Earth. The European Union, or EU, an intergovernmental body composed of most of the European states, is one of the two largest in the world. Of the member states in the EU, Germany has the largest national economy. Thirteen EU countries share a common unit of currency, the Euro. Major economic sectors in Europe include agriculture, manufacturing, and investment. The majority of the EU's trade is with the United States, China, India, Russia and non-member European states. This book focuses on the latest economic and political issues in Europe.

FIJI MACROECONOMY
: An Introduction
[Azmat Gani]
The macroeconomic performance noted for Fiji during 1970-2004 period indicates that economic growth has been less than satisfactory; unemployment has been twice as high of that which had been officially recorded; real wages have been declining; current account and government budgets continue to remain in deficits and are getting worse; inflation is remaining above the desired level; and investment is remaining below desired levels. Over the long term, Fiji's economic growth has been below the average for the lower-middle- income and East Asia and the Pacific group of countries. This book brings together an in-depth look at the fluctuating Fiji economy.

FINANCE
: Markets, Instruments & Investments
[Hans Byström]
In today's largely deregulated global economy, financial markets such as stock and bond markets play an increasingly important role. As a result, an understanding of the workings of the modern market economy almost certainly requires knowledge of the basic functions of financial markets. The book provides a comprehensive yet relatively short and non-technical introduction to financial markets and the principal financial instruments traded there. The basic concepts behind rational investment strategies in these markets are also covered. The material is up-to-date and, in addition to the treatment of traditional financial markets such as bond, stock and derivatives markets, the book provides an overview of the, recently, quickly growing market for credit and credit derivatives. Written with a wide readership in mind, the book is not only suitable for introductory Finance courses at the undergraduate or MBA level, but anyone who needs a basic understanding, or refreshment, of the core principles of Finance will find it helpful. Since the level of mathematical analysis has been consciously kept to a minimum, readers will find that the book requires only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics and statistics. The appendix at the end of the book contains the most important statistical concepts.

FOCUS ON CUBA
: Current Issues & Developments
[Aron T Urlich]
The Republic of Cuba consists of the island of Cuba (the largest and second-most populous island of the Greater Antilles), Isla de la Juventud and several adjacent small islands. Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Cuba is south of the eastern United States and The Bahamas, west of the Turks and Caicos Islands and Haiti and east of Mexico. The Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south. The national flower is Hedychium Coronarium Koenig, most known as "mariposa" (butterfly) and the national bird is "Tocororo" or "Cuban Trogon" from the family of Trogonidae. Cuba is the most populous nation in the Caribbean. Its people, culture and customs draw from several sources including the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the period of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of African slaves, and its proximity to the United States. Cuba's once-ambitious foreign policy has been scaled back and redirected as a result of economic hardship and the end of the Cold War. Cuba aims to find new sources of trade, aid, and foreign investment and to promote opposition to U.S. policy, especially the trade embargo and the 1996 Libertad Act. Cuba has relations with over 160 countries and has civilian assistance workers -- principally physicians and nurses -- in over 20 nations. Since the end of Soviet backing, Cuba appears to have largely abandoned monetary support for guerrilla movements that typified its involvement in regional politics in Latin America and Africa, though it maintains relations with several guerrilla and terrorist groups and provides refuge for some of their members in Cuba. Cuba's support for Latin guerrilla movements, its Marxist-Leninist government, and its alignment with the USSR led to its isolation in the hemisphere. Cuba is a member of the Organisation of American States (OAS), although its present government has been excluded from participation since 1962 for incompatibility with the principles of the inter-American system. Cuba hosted the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in September 2006 and will hold the NAM presidency until 2009. In the context of the NAM and its ordinary diplomacy, Cuba has developed friendly relations with Iran, North Korea and other rogue states.

FROM PSYCHOPATHS TO RESPONSIBLE CORPORATIONS
: Waking up the Inner Sleeping Beauty of Companies
[Tarja Ketola]
The purpose of this book is to show how companies can derive responsible actions from the inner values shared by all people - including the personnel of these companies, whether small or multinational enterprises - and from non-defensive communication with all stakeholders in any part of the world. Companies do not have to behave like psychopathic, borderline or neurotic personalities. Such unhealthy organisational behaviour derives from psychological defences companies use to deny, excuse or justify their irresponsible actions. Continuous defending makes life for corporations and their members very stressful. It is a great relief to them, when they are allowed to act responsibly, admit irresponsible episodes, repair the wrong done, and reorient towards future challenges. Responsible behaviour requires that corporate (1) values, (2) words, and (3) actions should be in line. This book shows different ways of matching these three levels, and suggests that the most natural corporate responsibility is achieved through matching (1) virtue ethical values shared by people all over the world, (2) concessive discourses leading to sublimations, and (3) actions that simultaneously take account of ecological, socio-cultural and economic responsibilities. Psychologists, philosophers and religious leaders can counsel companies striving for responsibility, and Carl Gustav Jung bridges their attempts with his ideas.

GLOBAL ECONOMICS
: An Introductory Course
[Gernot Köhler]
This book is intended as a text for an introductory course on global economics. The book assumes that the wealth or poverty of people in a specific country is not only caused within the economy of that country, but by the world economy. The unit of analysis is the world economic system, rather than any specific national economy. The student learns about the major aspects of the global economy, including environment, production, wages, profits, business cycle, trade, finance, and more. The complexity of the global economy is summarised in a diagram of three major circulatory flows, namely, circuit 1 -- physical flows, circuit 2 -- real market flows, and circuit 3 -- financial flows. The presentation is influenced by two intellectual traditions, namely, world-system analysis and post-Keynesian economics. There are no mathematical formulas, but statistical tables and graphs are included.

GLOBAL ECONOMICS
: New Research
[Albert Tavidze (ed)]
Although all economics are local, the effects of global economic events have begun to assume almost tsunami proportions in many cases. An earthquake in Country A causes a price spike in Country B. A deficit in C causes the inflation rate in D to skyrocket. This book is dedicated to presenting some important research in global economics while at the same time defining and identifying the economic events which trigger other economies to react in a significant manner.

GLOBAL TRENDS IN INCOME INEQUALITY
[Almas Heshmati]
This book examines income inequality and income distribution by focusing on the compilation of economic concepts, statistical and econometrics techniques developed and used in the measurement and empirical analysis of inequality at different levels. In particular, a number of issues crucial to the studies of global income inequality are addressed. These are the concepts, measurements and decomposition of inequality throughout the world’s distribution of income. Inequality is measured at different levels such as at the global, continental, international, intra-national and regional levels. Experiences gained from the analysis on these issues are then reflected in a discussion of the data and their role in the generation of the disparity and direction of changes in global income inequality. This book represents new developments in various decomposition of income and poverty measurements to illustrate methods, their usefulness and empirical results. In the evaluation of diverse methodologies, their strength and weaknesses are highlighted.

GLOBALIZATION & PARTNERSHIPS
: Features of Business Alliances & International Cooperation
[Jacques-Marie Aurifeille, Serge Svizzero & Clement A Tisdell (eds)]
Growing economic globalisation has increased international business competition and international economic interdependence. From this perspective, many firms have formed business partnerships and most nations have had to re-evaluate their economic interdependence. This book explores changes that have occurred or have been proposed in this regard. It provides new insights into business partnerships and international economic interdependence, given growing economic globalisation, and explores the managerial and socio-economic consequences of those ideas. The contributions in this book have been divided into four parts. Those in Part II concentrate on the specification of partnerships and reasons for business partnerships in the context of a globalisation. The idea of global networks in which some "hard" and "soft" forms of partnerships would appear and mix is introduced and discussed according to the partners involved (nations, unions, firms and consumers) and the economic activities (whether tangible or abstract). Globalisation also has a number of consequences for business co-ordination, in particular when they are based on outsourcing strategies in which cost reduction is balanced with knowledge transfers. These are amongst the issues explored in Part III. The difficulty to monitor and predict the effects of global partnerships tends to increase the importance of cultural and psychological variables such as trust and commitment. Therefore the role of attitudes and perceptions is very important. Whatever the agreement and the conjoined management among partner firms, the attitude of the other agents can produce asymmetric affects on these firms and considerably bias their partnership strategy. Such biases are particularly likely from consumers. Their attitude towards globalisation is not the only bias that may occur. Their loyalty is also an important issue in a globalising world, particularly in the service sector where lots of partnerships have been made on a global scale (eg banks, airlines, leisure). These are amongst the relationship marketing issues explored in Part IV. In Part V, the factors introduced in the previous chapters are considered from a regional and cultural perspective, where nations and regions themselves are engaged in global partnership. In this context, discrepancy often develops between the domestic and the international globalisation strategies, as well as between the capital and labour markets. The resulting complexity is particularly problematic for the developing and peripheral economies. Novel insights about partnership emerge, as studied in this concluding part of the book.

HAPPINESS, ECONOMICS & PUBLIC POLICY
[Helen Johns & Paul Ormerod]
With commentaries by Samuel Brittan and Melanie Powell. In "Happiness, Economics and Public Policy", Helen Johns and Paul Ormerod analyse the economic research that underlies politicians’ growing preoccupation with measures of 'well-being'. In a lucid and compelling analysis, written for economists and non-economists alike, the authors find that happiness research cannot be used to justify government intervention in the way its proponents suggest. Those who wish governments to take into account measures of well-being when setting policy often point to the fact that increases in income have not led to increases in measured happiness, and thus governments should concentrate on redistribution and improving the quality of life, rather than on allowing people to benefit from economic growth. In fact, measured happiness does not appear to be related to public spending, violent crime, property crime, sexual equality, disability, life expectancy or unemployment either. The stark fact is that, as Helen Johns and Paul Ormerod demonstrate, the difficulties in measuring society’s happiness are insurmountable, and policymakers should not claim that they can control and increase happiness through public policy decisions.

HUMAN ACTION (4-VOLUME SET)
: A Treatise on Economics
[Ludwig von Mises; Edited by Bettina B Greaves]
4 books in slipcase. Mises attributes the tremendous technological progress and the consequent increase in wealth and general welfare in the last two centuries to the introduction of liberal government policies based on free-market economic teachings, creating an economic and political environment which permits individuals to pursue their respective goals in freedom and peace. Mises also explains the futility and counter-productiveness of government attempts to regulate, control, and equalise all people's circumstances: "Men are born unequal and... it is precisely their inequality that generates social cooperation and civilisation."

IMPACT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS ON FIRM PROCESSES & PERFORMANCE
: Developing Economy Perspectives
[Acklesh Prasad]
This book provides the much needed international dimension on the payoffs of information technology investments. The bulk of the research on the impact of information technology investments has been undertaken in developed economies, mainly the United States. This research provides an alternative dimension -- a developing country perspective on how information technology investments impacts organisations. Secondly, there has been much debate and controversy on how we measure information technology investment payoffs. This research uses an innovative two-stage model where it proposes that information technology investments will first impact the process and improvement in the processes will then impact the performance. In doing so, it considers sectors of information technology investment rather than taking it as one. Finally, almost all prior studies in this area have considered only the tangible impact of information technology investments. This research proposes that one can only better understand the benefits by looking at both the tangible and intangible benefits.
