ALIEN IMMIGRANTS TO ENGLAND, 1337-1750
: A Document History
[N Goose & L Luu (eds)]
There is a wealth of documentary material available, both published and unpublished, that reflects the existence and experiences of immigrant communities in late Medieval and early modern England. The great majority of the published material is, however, difficult to access, while the unpublished material is widely scattered among national and local record repositories. This volume presents the first full collection of documentary evidence relating to immigrants to England ever to be published, and as such will provide scholars and students with an invaluable resource. The present volume is the first of a proposed three-volume series, which will take alien immigration up to the present day, commences with the first concerted attempts to attract foreign immigrants made in the reign of Edward III, and closes at the end of the early modern period (c.1750), coinciding with a period that has been widely regarded as a crucial one in the forging of a new sense of national identity. Topics covered include the foundations of immigrant communities, legal and economic status, wealth and poverty, economic and cultural impacts, popular and elite reactions, assimilation, the stranger churches and their discipline, and international connections. Each chapter is introduced by a scholarly appraisal of the value and implications of the documents that it includes.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE -- THE CRIMEAN WAR
((Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Volume 14))
[Lynn McDonald (ed)]
The 'Collected Works of Florence Nightingale' series demonstrates Nightingale's astute use of the political process and report on her extensive correspondence with royalty, viceroys, cabinet ministers and international leaders, including such notables as Queen Victoria and W E Gladstone. It will also contain a great deal of new material on family relations. Sixteen printed volumes are scheduled and will record her enormous and largely unpublished correspondence, previously published books, articles and pamphlets, many of which have long been out of print. There will be full publication in electronic form, permitting readers to easily pursue their particular interests. Extensive databases, notably a chronology and a names index, will also be published in electronic form, again permitting convenient access to persons interested not only in Nightingale but in other figures of the time. The series will confirm Nightingale as an important and significant nineteenth-century scholar and illustrate how she integrated her scholarship with political activism. Indispensable to scholars, and accessible and revealing to the general reader, it will show there is much more to know about Florence Nightingale than the 'lady with the lamp'.

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY OF SPAIN
[J M Martinez & R King]
This volume starts by placing Spain within the new political and economic context of Europe and then traces Spain's own political evolution from dictatorship to democracy and the autonomous regions. Subsequent chapters deal with demography, the agricultural crisis, industrial restructuring, the growth of the service economy, mass tourism, the welfare state, transport and urban systems. The text concludes with an integrated summary of the constituent elements of the new geography of Spain, set within the context of continuing and emerging regional disequilibria in Spain and with reference to Spain's position on the dynamic semi-periphery of Europe.

LANDS THAT HOLD ONE SPELLBOUND
: A Story of East Greenland
((Northern Lights Series: 11))
[Spencer Apollonio]
This is an informal history of East Greenland. Author Spencer Apollonio has written the only known overview of the history of this region, summarising indigenous settlements over four millennia and describing European explorations from the Norse to recent years. East Greenland, running from Kap Farvel in the south to Kap Morris Jesup in the north, is an immense land of great mountains and fjords, of glaciers and meadowlands, and contrasts of weather perhaps unique in the world. It has been colonised seven different times over 4,000 years by migrants from the west. Intrepid explorers returned year after year, attracted by this land which captivated and enthralled them. But its history has never before been told. Here, each of the European and American expeditions are recounted, relying extensively on the explorers' original accounts, as well as on the author’s often highly evocative narration. Apollonio details the struggles of vessels to reach the coast through the ice pack, the longest Arctic sledge journeys, the peculiar story of World War II in East Greenland, and the impact of centuries of exploration and change on Greenland’s indigenous populations.
REVIEW: "Far north, hidden behind grim barriers of pack ice, are lands that hold one spellbound. Gigantic imaginary gates, with hinges set in the horizon, seem to guard these lands. Slowly the gates swing open, and one enters another world where men are insignificant amid the awesome immensity of lonely mountains, fjords and glaciers." -- Louise Boyd, photographer, 1935

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR AFTER THE END OF THE COLD WAR
[Pelt Mogens & Morten Heiberg (ed)]
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) is still today subjected to heated discussions and public debates. As with the Vietnam War 30 years later, the civil war in Spain had a deep impact outside the area in which the military battle took place. Thousands of books have since contributed to the understanding of what started as an internal Spanish clash, but ended in an international conflict. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy's support to General Franco's military rebellion as well as Soviet Union's defence of the Republic, provided the civil war with an ideological dimension which has left its imprint on the historical interpretations ever since. However, in spite of huge scientific and public interest in the civil war, our knowledge of this crucial event is not as complete, as one might assume. Actually, it is only in recent years that we have acquired a more precise knowledge of the way the great powers handled the conflict. This is due essentially to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which led to the sudden release of a wide range of important documents from archives across the world. Inspired by these new insights, the different chapters of the present study, written by some of the foremost researchers in the field, offer an original interpretation and reveal little-known or hitherto neglected aspects of one of the most controversial conflicts of the 20th century.

SPECIAL WORLD
: Stalin's Power Apparatus & the Soviet System's Secret Structures of Communication
[Niels Erik Rosenfeldt. Translated by Sally Laird & John Kendal]
This doctoral dissertation provides an in-depth analysis of Stalin's secret Party chanceller and of several other secret structures within the Soviet Communist Party, the Soviet State Security Service and the headquarters of the Communist International. Stalin's chancellery numbered approximately 100 staff members from the mid-1920s and functioned as a kind of invisible service organ through which Stalin's decisions -- whether on social-economic change or on police matters and terror -- were implemented. When the Soviet Union collapsed the formerly closed archives were to a certain degree opened for research. Since the mid-nineties Niels Erik Rosenfeldt has on several occasions visited these archives. Partly based on this research he here presents a thorough and groundbreaking study of some of the most secret structures of Soviet society. As a starting point a detailed description is given of the principles and procedures for secrecy in the Soviet System of the 1920s. This is followed by an investigation of the development of Stalin's secret chancellery, from the early 1920s to the death of Stalin in 1953, and of the various internal and external factors affecting the growth and shape of the secret apparatus during the same period. More specifically there is a lengthy discussion of the role of the secret chancellery in the Soviet decision-making process. In the analysis of the Soviet State Security Service the main emphasis is put on the network of the ultra-secret "special departments" and "special sections". The examination of the apparatus of the Communist International focuses on the clandestine chancellery and communication departments which can -- more or less directly -- be compared to the structural pattern of Stalin's secret chancellery and related offices in the Soviet Communist Party.

STRUGGLE TO UNDERSTAND
: A History of Human Wonder & Discovery
[Herbert C Corben]
For thousands of years, our ancestors pursued the spiritual and intellectual quests of trying to understand the world that surrounds us and the world that lies within... We shall trace these... ideas through their successes and failures, through brilliant developments obstinately opposed or ignored, the lucky guesses, the incorrect hypotheses strongly clung to, and the personal dangers that were the rewards of many scholars who struggled to understand them...

VICTORIAN CLASS CONFLICT?
: Schoolteaching & the Parson, Priest & Minister, 1837-1902
[John T Smith]
Villages and towns in the Victorian era saw a great expansion in educational provision, and witnessed the rise of the elementary teaching profession, often provided and supported by local clergymen. This book investigates the social and economic relationships of such clergymen and teachers who worked co-operatively and at times in competition with each other, their relative positions typified by the comment of one contemporary clergyman as 'those of master and servant'. The inevitable result was a complex of movements in society in the final third of the nineteenth century that led to increasing clashes in villages, as one group (the clergy) sought to preserve its hold on its status and power, while the other (male and female teachers) attempted to secure their new role in society. The research presented is based on previously unused, original sources -- church documents, HMI reports, newspapers and journals and private papers. It is not confined, as is the case with so much recent research, to the Church of England, but breaks new ground in providing a comparative analysis of the social position and educational work of Roman Catholic and Wesleyan clergy, and their collaboration with their elementary school teachers. This book is essential reading for all those interested in Victorian Education.

ATLANTIC WORLD
: A History, 1400-1888
[Douglas Egerton et al]
Before the voyage of Columbus in 1492, the Atlantic Ocean stood as a barrier to contact between the people (and their ideas and institutions), plants, animals, and microbes of Eurasia and Africa on the one hand and the Americas on the other. Following Columbus's voyage, the Atlantic turned into a conduit for transferring these things among the four continents bordering the ocean in ways that affected people living on each of them. The appearance of "The Atlantic World" marks an important achievement, for it stands out as the first successful attempt to combine the many strains of Atlantic history into a comprehensive, thoughtful narrative. At the core of this ground-breaking and eloquently written survey lies a consideration of the relationships among people living in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with a focus on how these relationships played important roles -- often the most important roles -- in how the histories of the people involved unfolded. The ways of life of millions of people changed, sometimes for the better but often for the worse, because of their relationship to the larger Atlantic world. And unlike existing texts dealing with one or another aspect of Atlantic history, "The Atlantic World" does not subjugate the history of Africa and South America to those of the "British Atlantic" or Europe. With historians and other scholars beginning to reconceptualise the Atlantic World as a dynamic zone of exchange in which people, commodities, and ideas circulated from the mid-fifteenth century until the dawn of the twentieth century, the interconnections between people along the Atlantic rim create a coherent region, one in which events in one corner inevitably altered the course of history in another. As this book testifies, Atlantic history, properly understood, is history without borders -- in which national narratives take backstage to the larger examination of interdependence and cultural transmission. Conceived of and produced by a team of distinguished authors with countless hours of teaching experience at the college level, this thoughtfully organised, beautifully written, and lavishly illustrated book will set the standard for all future surveys intended as a core text for the new and rapidly growing courses in Atlantic History.

CAPTAIN COOK'S NAVIGATOR & COLERIDGE'S POEM
: William Wales, Samuel Taylor Coleridge & 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'
[Bill Whelen]
Australian art historian Bernard Smith has linked the navigator on Cook's second voyage, William Wales, to Coleridge's celebrated poem, 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Smith found that Wales was Coleridge's schoolmaster and that the journal he wrote on the 'Resolution' voyage must have been a source for the poem. The author of this book came across Smith's 1956 articles while planning a tramping trip into Dusky Sound, visited by the Resolution in March/April 1773. In this fascinating and assiduously researched book, Bill Whelen traces the connections between the two men and 'the Ancient Mariner'.

CASTLES OF GOLD
: A History of New Zealand's West Coast Irish
[Lyndon Fraser]
From the 1860s, the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island was the scene of two major goldfields, attracting hopefuls from all over the world. Suddenly, where there had been native bush and wide rivers, towns with 400 pubs and accommodation houses had appeared. Amongst the hopefuls were Irish miners, many of whom stayed on after the goldrushes as part of a community with its own distinctive character. This is the first academic study on the history of those Irish - where they came from, who they were, how many women came and what they did, how people sustained their family connections, what they believed -- in the context of the history of the larger Irish diaspora. The author draws on private letters and oral histories as well as more conventional sources, and includes many individual migration and settlement stories.

CHIVALRY & THE PERFECT PRINCE
: Tournaments, Art, & Armor at the Spanish Habsburg Court
[Braden K Frieder]
This is a survey of the ceremonial armour crafted for the Spanish Habsburg monarchs of the sixteenth century. It examines notable tournaments and pageantry held at the courts of Charles V and Philip II, and the artworks associated with them. Braden Frieder guides the reader through these tournaments, jousting, and other knightly exercises as part of a larger aristocratic culture that included arms and armour, paintings, tapestries, medals, and sculptures with chivalric themes. Frieder presents Habsburg tournaments in their proper historical context as an extension of imperial politics, drawing comparisons with popular chivalric literature of the period. Frieder’s study utilises extensive primary source material and contemporary documents, many appearing for the first time in English.

DEATH IN THE POT
: The Impact of Food Poisoning on History
[Morton Satin]
In 2005, the Argonne National Laboratory proved that the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven died prematurely from lead poisoning. This is just one example of how poisoning, both natural and deliberate, has affected the course of history. Battles have been lost or won -- as internationally renowned food expert Morton Satin shows-because of unclean, adulterated food. In this engrossing narrative, Satin spans the ancient world to the present day, documenting events both tragic and bizarre through the ages. In the fifth century B.C.E., the great plague of Athens, probably caused by contaminated cereals, led to the defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. In the pre-scientific Middle Ages, illnesses resulting from contaminated food were often attributed to the wrath of God or malevolent spirits. Heavily infectious ergot induced a spasmodic muscle condition, which the Church named "St. Anthony's Fire" and interpreted as retribution by God on heretics. Similarly, in seventeenth-century America the hallucinogenic symptoms of mouldy grain were thought by Puritans to be signs of witchcraft. Even the madness of King George III, which played a role in the American Revolution, may have been induced by accidental arsenic poisoning. In the twentieth century, Satin recounts the efforts of modern industrial societies to make food safer; in some cases these efforts were heroic. For example, in the early days of the Food and Drug Administration a "Poison Squad" was formed, consisting of young scientists who willingly acted as guinea pigs to test the toxic effects of chemical additives. Today, the government has focused on the hazards of food bioterrorism. Satin concludes by describing measures taken to protect the public from intentional and unintentional poisoning, as well as recounting recent poisoning incidents. Both a fascinating glimpse into history from a unique angle and an authoritative reference work on food safety, Death in the Pot offers entertaining and informative reading for laypersons as well as experts in food technology and public health.

DISPUTED HISTORIES
: Imagining New Zealand's Pasts
[Tony Ballantyne & Brian Moloughney (eds)]
In this volume, leading historians reflect on writing about New Zealand's past. They also test how that past is investigated and framed. Their essays tell us much about New Zealand's many pasts and how historians have imagined them, and indicate particular concerns with what the country is now and the current role of history as a discipine within our nation. They ask questions and venture some answers. The introductory essay by the editors surveys the work of historians since the 1980s, while the final essay is based on an interview with Erik Olssen, whose work has been at the forefront of historical research and methodology in the period. In between, a variety of topics are visited and methodologies applied. Running through the volume are two threads: discussions of the limits of national history and the search for new archives and sites of historical enquiry.

FEUD IN MEDIEVAL & EARLY MODERN EUROPE
[Bjørn Poulsen & Jeppe B Netterström (eds)]
We tend to think of a feud as being a long established state of hostilities, especially between families or clans, which normally manifests itself in revengeful violence. One of the articles in this volume thus states: "What began as a dispute over the property rights of a woman to whom both parties were related quickly mutated into a violent clash between men, in which honour and reputation were at stake -- and from here to a full-blown feud the distance was rather short". However, the studies of feuds presented in this publication leave no doubt that they were very different in different societies. The phenomenon of feud turns out to be intimately connected with developments in society and state. Consequently, in recent years a growing interest has been aroused in further researching the topic and the aim of this book is therefore to present some of the principal positions of this new research. Contributions by leading scholars in the field cover a large span of years, from the classic Icelandic feuds of the Sagas to more recent Early-Modern incidents. One contribution even takes us back to the roots of mankind, but the focus of the book is mainly on the Medieval and Early-Modern period. The volume is opened with a comprehensive introduction to the field, followed by a chapter that seeks general definitions. Hereafter, we are presented with specific cases of Icelandic women from the Sagas who promote feuds, studies of feuds in 14th century Marseilles, Italian Medieval vendettas, and feuding in Medieval Germany and Denmark.

DOMINION OF YOUTH
: Adolescence & the Making of a Modern Canada, 1920 to 1950
[Cynthia Comacchio]
This book captures what it meant for young Canadians to inhabit this liminal stage of life within the context of a young nation caught up in the self-formation and historic transformation that would make modern Canada. Because the young at this time were seen paradoxically as both the hope of the nation and the source of its possible degeneration, new policies and institutions were developed to deal with the 'problem of youth'. This history considers how young Canadians made the transition to adulthood during a period that was 'developmental' -- both for youth and for a nation also working toward individuation. During the years considered here, those who occupied this 'dominion' of youth would see their experiences more clearly demarcated by generation and culture than ever before. With this book, Cynthia Comacchio offers the first detailed study of adolescence in early-twentieth-century Canada and demonstrates how young Canadians of the period became the nation's first modern teenagers.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE -- EXTENDED NURSING
((Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Volume 12, Part Two))
[Lynn McDonald (ed)]

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE ON SOCIAL CHANGE IN INDIA
[Gerrard Vallee (ed)]
"Social Change in India" shows the shift of focus that occurred during Florence Nightingale’s more than forty years of work on public health in India. While the focus in the preceding volume, "Health in India", was top-down reform, notably in the Royal Commission on the Sanitary State of the Army in India, this book documents concrete proposals for self-government, especially at the municipal level, and the encouragement of leading Indian nationals themselves. Famine and related epidemics continue to be issues, demonstrating the need for public works like irrigation and for greater self-help measures like "health missioners" and self-government. The book includes sections on village and town sanitation, the condition and status of women, land tenure, rent reform, and education and political evolution toward self-rule. Nightingale’s publications on these subjects appeared increasingly in Indian journals. Correspondence shows Nightingale continuing to work behind the scenes, pressing viceroys, governors, and Cabinet ministers to take up the cause of sanitary reform. Her collaboration with Lord Ripon, viceroy 1880-84, was crucial, for he was a great promoter of Indian self-government. This volume features much new material, including a substantial number of long-missing letters to Lady Dufferin, wife of the viceroy 1884-88, on the provision of medical care for women in India, health education, and the promotion of women doctors. Biographical sketches of major collaborators, a glossary of Indian terms, and a list of Indian place names are also provided.

Between the world wars, France constructed a vast and complex array of defences designed to prevent German forces from penetrating the French heartland as they had during World War I. Among these was the famous Maginot Line, the last of the great gun-bearing fortifications, but France also built defences along its coasts and in its territories in North Africa. Fully illustrated with photos, maps, and drawings, Fortress France describes the design and construction of these fortifications, discusses French defensive doctrine and strategy, and explains why these efforts proved unable to stop the German attack in the spring of 1940. Includes finely detailed plans, diagrams, and schematics of forts, blockhouses, turrets, artillery pieces, tanks, and more.

GYMNASTICS & POLITICS
: Niels Bukh & Male Aesthetics
[Hans Bonde; Translated by Simon Frost]
The first international biography of Niels Bukh (1880-1950), the charismatic founder of the special Danish school of modern gymnastics. His team of young elite gymnasts travelled around the world demonstrating his gymnastics, and in Japan his school is still attracting thousands of pupils. Bukh's private life and his fascination with the German Nazi party makes him a very controversial figure even fifty years after his death. Includes a DVD with 131 film clips in Danish, English and Japanese.
REVIEW: "As well as a fine story about a complex person who has played such an important role both politically and in relation to the development of gymnastics, Bonde’s book includes numerous photographs of great interest plus a bonus DVD, making it an invaluable resource for historians and all who recognise the links between sport and politics as worthy of exploration." -- Dr. Wendy Varney, School of Social Sciences, Media and Communication, University of Wollongong, Australia.

HEART OF THE CARIBOO-CHILCOTIN
: More Stories Worth Keeping
[Diana Wilson (ed)]
This anthology continues the story of the Cariboo-Chilcotin, a harshly beautiful and remote region in BC's north. From the days of the gold rush through to modern times, these stories capture the spirit of a place whose beauty and wildness have inspired its people throughout its history. Legendary tales include a husband's promise to his dying wife that he will not let her body languish in what to her is an alien, inhospitable land. How the theft of a nugget pin in Barkerville leads to a murderer's capture. The ill-conceived plan to use camels on the Cariboo Road. Native traditions and skills handed down through generations. The wild and woolly early years of the Cariboo stampedes. A sasquatch-sized bear that inadvertently becomes a cash cow for one hunting guide. These accounts of Cariboo-Chilcotin life are as diverse as they are fascinating: some nostalgic, some deeply moving, and some that will tickle the funny bone in a most agreeable way. Contributors include Sage Birchwater, Veera Bonner, Chilco Choate, Eric Collier, Alan Fry, Rich Hobson, Eldon Lee, Todd Lee, Harry Marriott, Hilary Place, Robin Skelton, Jean E Speare, Paul St Pierre, Irene Stangoe and Ann Walsh.

HERESY, CULTURE, & RELIGION IN EARLY MODERN ITALY
: Contexts & Contestations
[Ronald K Delph, Michelle M Fontaine & John Jeffries Martin]
The study of the Italian reform movements challenges the traditional framework of Reformation and Counter Reformation that many scholars had previously used to approach the religious culture of Italy in the 16th and 17th century. This book offers an overview of some of the best work being done by scholars in both Italy and the US on this subject.

HISTORY OF TEXAS, 4TH EDITION
[Robert A Calvert, Arnoldo De Leon & Gregg Cantrell]
The principle that all people make history continues to drive the Fourth Edition of our well-loved text, one that continues to consider the different cultures within the state as well as the unique heritage shared by all Texans. Unlike other surveys of the Lone Star State, "The History of Texas" goes beyond accounts of well-known figures to consider the lives of ordinary Texans, as seen in the continued and expanded coverage of topics such as agriculture, industrialisation, urbanisation, economic disparity, migration patterns, and demographic change. Like its predecessors, the Fourth Edition features the history of folklore, music, literature, sports, religion, and other important aspects of Texas culture that help determine the flavour of Texas, past and present. In response to the feedback of instructors and students alike, this edition has been reedited and revised, making it more accessible to student readers of all levels and representative of the very latest historical research. Additions include broader discussions of American Indian peoples, the activities in Texas of the French explorer La Salle, the lead up to and the battles and other events comprising the Texas Revolution, and the affinity between Texas and southern culture that ensued once the Republic became a state in 1845. In addition, the description of Reconstruction in Texas has been reorganised and simplified to help students grasp better this complex topic. Naturally, the final chapter has -- in light of the rapid movements in politics, the economy, and culture -- undergone extensive revision, bringing the coverage through the election of 2006. Still the best-illustrated survey of Texas history, "The History of Texas" remains the most inclusive, relevant, and up-to-date account of all those who call the Lone Star State home.

HUGUENOT SOLDIERS OF WILLIAM OF ORANGE & THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION OF 1688
: The Lions of Judah
[Matthew Glozier]
This book provides the first full-scale, scholarly analysis of the political, religious and social rationale which underlay Huguenot support for William of Orange in 1688. In the context of the Huguenot exodus from France and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the role of the Huguenot soldiers within an international Protestant political context is explained through the use of rich biographical and historical detail. Special attention is given to the role played by the most prominent Protestant soldiers of William's army, the Huguenot refugees and the British soldiers of the Anglo-Dutch Brigade. The importance of issues of loyalty and conscience amongst Europe's professional international officer corps is addressed, thereby placing the valuable service rendered to William III by his Huguenot soldiers in an international context encompassing political, religious and social aspects. This book will be a rich source of biographical information about hundreds of Huguenot soldiers in British, Dutch and Brandenburg service in the period 1670 to 1700.
REVIEW: "Glozier's study is most impressive in its reconstruction of the Huguenot community. His book has a prosopographical approach and contains a treasury of biographical information, based upon which the author analyses the social and religious background of the soldiers... an important and innovative contribution to Dutch military historiography as well as Huguenot studies and may prove an important incentive to study this topic in more depth." -- H-Albion. "This book’s particular merit lies in its international scope and its focus on Huguenot officers serving William in the Netherlands and Ireland... Discusses a worthwhile and neglected subject." -- Albion. "An important and innovative contribution to Dutch military historiography as well as Huguenot studies and may prove an important incentive to study this topic in more depth." -- H-Albion. "The book’s correction of previous historians and assemblage of useful data in one place make it a valuable starting point for early-modern French, British, Dutch and military historians." -- 17th-Century Military News.

I SOLD THE MOON!
: A True Story
[Barry McArdle]
This is a true story from the 1970's of the original Moon Man, a silver-suited street performer and comic philosopher. For ten years, Moon Man criss-crossed America selling 'lunar real estate', transportation not provided. Told in the first person, "I Sold the Moon" explores how a young man, fresh out of college, could get the idea that he could claim the moon and then sell it. Moon Man's evolution is paralleled throughout by more earthly concerns including his evolving romance in the turbulent days of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. The reader will be swept along as the Moon Man discovers and refines the best way to sell his newly claimed property. This includes the progression from door-to-door selling, in a coat and tie, selling 20 moon acres a day, to appearing in a custom-tailored 'moon suit' on college campuses, and selling more than 400 'acres' in two hours. The moon trail takes the Moon Man to almost every college campus in California, onto local television programs, eventually into the Midwest, New York and ultimately to Ireland. "I Sold the Moon" tells of the evolution of an idea pursued against all logic and convention while weaving a story of passion, heartache and ultimate redemption.

IMPACT OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR ON BRITAIN
: War, Loss & Memory
[Tom Buchanan]
The Spanish Civil War has had a profound and lasting impact on Britain. At least 2400 Britons volunteered to fight for the Spanish Republic (of whom more than 500 died), while others provided medical assistance, visited Spain in delegations, or covered the Civil War as journalists. In this collection of three of his published articles and seven new essays, all based on primary research, Tom Buchanan sheds light on many facets of this complex relationship. The book's central themes are the impact of loss on families and communities, and the importance of Spain itself -- its history and culture -- in the way that the Civil War was understood in Britain. Some of the chapters deal with individuals involved in the Civil War, such as the writer John Langdon-Davies, the artist Felicia Browne and the journalist GL Steer. Others pursue somewhat neglected themes, such as the response of British artists to the war or the role played by British medical personnel. The final two chapters focus on the long-term impact of the conflict on British politics and on Britain's relations with Spain since 1939.
REVIEW: "...a rich survey of the war's lessons and legacy..." -- Sasha Pack, University at Buffalo, SUNY, Journal of British Studies.

NAZISM & THE RADICAL RIGHT IN AUSTRIA, 1918-1934
[John T Lauridsen]
The author offers a comparative analysis of the two most important radical right-wing movements in Austria during the inter-war period: Heimwehr and NSDAP. The book examines the movements from their emergence until they respectively are taken into the existing power apparatus (Heimwehr) and forbidden (NSDAP). The analysis ends in 1934 after the destruction of democracy when the Austrian labour movement was violently put down and the NSDAP vainly made an attempted coup.

NECHAKO COUNTRY
: In the Footsteps of Bert Irvine
[June Wood]
The indomitable spirit of Bert Irvine is at the heart of Nechako Country, a story that provides a glimpse into a simpler world in simpler times. After Bert moved his young family from Barrhead in north-western Alberta to Vanderhoof in central British Columbia, the Upper Nechako country and the Nechako River became an integral part of their lives. Bert's life was and still is intertwined with the wilderness, and the country itself is a major player in this tale. Spanning 1934 to 2005, a period of unprecedented and fast-paced change, much of the story focuses on the '50s and '60s. As the wilderness way of life continues to be replaced by a new world of high technology, and the wilderness itself is pushed back and badly bruised, Nechako Country provides a window into the past and a lifestyle that has all but vanished. In part the story of one man's journey through life as a trapper, guide-outfitter and jack-of-all trades, it is also a history of the Upper Nechako Valley and its people. And, possibly most importantly, it is the story of the tortured Nechako River, the lifeblood of the beloved Nechako country.

NEW WORLD, FIRST NATIONS
: Native Peoples of Mesoamerica & the Andes Under Colonial Rule
[David Cahill & Blanca Tovias (eds)]
The Spanish conquest and colonisation of the Americas dramatically transformed the lives of native peoples in Mesoamerica and the Andes. This revolutionary and multilayered process varied greatly in its intensity and timing from region to region, but in all cases radically changed indigenous societies, their values and beliefs. The encounter between native peoples and the Spanish conquistadors and later settlers was marked by violence and drastic, epidemic-driven population decline. This dislocatory phase gradually gave way to myriad forms of accommodation, resistance, and social, cultural and religious hybridity -- the colonial heritage of Spanish America. The innovative essays in this volume compare the colonial experience of native peoples of the conquered Aztec, Maya and Inca civilisations, from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. They highlight their creative responses to the challenges posed by colonial rule, its institutions, religion, and legal and economic systems. Interdisciplinary in approach, the essays distil a generation of scholarship and suggest an agenda for future research. This book will be of great interest to historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, and post-colonialists.

PECULIAR IMBALANCE
: The Fall & Rise of Racial Equality in Early Minnesota
[William D Green]
In the 1850s, as Minnesota Territory was reaching toward statehood, settlers from the eastern United States moved in, carrying rigid perceptions of race and culture into a community built by people of many backgrounds who relied on each other for survival. History professor William Green unearths the untold stories of African Americans and contrasts their experiences with those of Indians, mixed bloods, and Irish Catholics. He demonstrates how a government built on the ideals of liberty and equality denied the rights to vote, run for office, and serve on a jury to free men fully engaged in the lives of their respective communities.

PHILADELPHIA CAMPAIGN, VOLUME 2
: Germantown & the Roads to Valley Forge
[Thomas J McGuire]
This second in a monumental two-volume set on the 1777 campaign of the American Revolution follows the saga from Cornwallis's triumphal march of his British and Hessian troops into Philadelphia in late September to Washington's movement of the weary Continental forces to camp at Valley Forge in December. Based on soldiers' and civilians' vivid accounts -- many uncovered for the first time from private collections -- the story of the compelling fight for independence reaches its most desperate moments. Defeated at Brandywine and out-manoeuvred near Valley Forge, the Continental forces were worn out and ill equipped. Yet on October 4, Washington would embark on his first major offensive of the war -- a surprise attack at dawn on Howe's main camp at Germantown. Again defeated, though narrowly this time, the Continentals gained valuable experience and new confidence in the possibility of victory. The seige of the Delaware River forts -- one of the bloodiest and prolonged battles of the war -- ended with British success in mid-November, but still Howe failed to end the war. In his last American offensive before his resignation took effect, Howe tried unsuccessfully to draw Washington from the fortified hills of Whitemarsh. Now, as the Continental forces moved to Valley Forge for the winter, they would have to face their greatest challenge -- survival.

PRAIRIE WEST AS PROMISED LAND
[R Douglas Francis & Chris Kitzan (eds)]
In 1906, the Sugar Maple Tree Song was just one example of the rhapsodic pieces that touted the Canadian West as the "promised land". In the formative years of agricultural settlement from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War, the Canadian government, along with the railways & other Prairie boosters, further developed & propagated the image within the widely distributed promotional literature that was used to attract millions of immigrants from all corners of the world. The West was ripe with promise for those wishing to escape religious persecution, unproductive land, or intolerable living & working conditions. Some saw the Prairies as an ideal place to create a Utopian society. others seized the chance to take control of their own destinies in a new & exciting place. Whatever the case, the image of the West as a place of unbridled prosperity & opportunity became the dominant perception of the region at the time. This group of essays, which includes contributions from some of the best-known Prairie historians as well as some of the most promising new scholars in the field, explores this pervasive theme in western history & makes an important contribution to the historiography of the Prairie West.

RECEPTION OF PLUTARCH'S 'LIVES' IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY ITALY
: Two-Volume Set
[Marianne Pade]
Plutarch's Lives of great Greek and Roman public figures are among the central texts of European culture. Like most Greek authors Plutarch had been unknown in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, but when Renaissance humanists rekindled interest in Greek language and culture, he became one of the most widely read authors of the period. These two volumes show how Plutarch came to influence fifteenth-century Italian culture and how the overwhelming interest in the Lives can be explained by studying the way Classical Antiquity was used for ideological purposes in Renaissance Italy.

RISE & FALL OF A ROMAN NOBLE FAMILY
: The Domith Ahenobarbi 196BC-AD68
[Jesper Carlsen]
This is the first monograph of the Domitii Ahenobarbi and fills a gap in our knowledge of the Roman aristocracy. The study is more than a traditional genealogy and family history. It furnishes a collective biography of one Roman senatorial family and contributes to a new and more profound understanding of Roman political, religious, social and economic life by focusing on the activities of the protagonists on a wide front.

WATERCRAFT ON WORLD COINS, VOLUME 1
: Europe, 1800-2005
[Yossi Dotan]
Fram, Golden Hind, Santa Maria, Vasa, HMS Victory are names of famous ships that have played a part in Europe’s maritime history. The stories associated with these and many other ships are told in this book of 'ship coins'. Each narrative provides the historical background and watercraft experience and circumstance of the soldiers, sailors, admirals and generals, explorers, naval commanders and fishermen who sometimes through bravery and sometimes through human error have merited a place in the historical record, and are associated with particular vessels that have merited the striking of a coin in record and rememberance. This book is the first ever to narrate the history through the medium of ships featured on coins. Each entry contains information on the ships, wherever available (length, beam, depth and tonnage). The book constitutes a catalogue of ship coins organised according to the popular KM numbering system, with groupings under separate headings where ships have a common design. The coin images represent the many different ways in which the ships are depicted. Each volume contains a select bibliography and an index listing the ships, persons and other major topics covered in the narratives. Volume I: Europe will be followed by Volume II: America and Asia, 1800-2008 and Volume III: Africa and Oceania, 1800-2011.

WITNESS
: Memory, Representation & the Media in Question
[Frederik Tygstrup & Ulrik Ekman (eds)]
This book offers a complex and thought-provoking anthology of critical essays respecting the notion of the witness and phenomena of witnessing in Western culture since the Holocaust. 'Witness' presents a new body of work in the field by an international collective of scholars concerned with resituating witnessing in its specifically contemporary problematic. This volume thus not only establishes links with existing, currently canonical contributions to witness literature -- from Primo Levi through Victor Klemperer to Imre Kertész -- it also goes on to provide a set of analyses of exemplary and very recent literary works in that area. Most significantly, Witness extends and changes the previous scholarly tendency to focus strongly on historical evidence and the witness’ vocalisation of true remembrance so as to include difficult theoretical and interpretative questions posed by studies today of traumatic experience, amnesia, visual culture, new media, and technology. Amongst others, the book includes contributions from the acclaimed Romanian-German author Herta Müller, and such an internationally recognised scholar in trauma studies as Cathy Caruth.

WORLD HISTORY, VOLUME 1
: A Concise Thematic Analysis
[Steven Wallech, Craig Hendricks, Touraj Daryaee, Anne Lynne Negus, Peter Wan & Gordon Morris Bakken]
World History is one of the most difficult college-level courses to teach which involves the entire history of humanity. Much of the literature of world history emphasises the differences between regional cultures and local histories, leaving many instructors having to look elsewhere for the similarities that might hold together a global narrative. With decades of combined experience teaching world history, the authors have witnessed first hand the frustration many students experience. Several years have been spent preparing this new approach. This book stands alone, its recurrent and interesting themes give it a unique voice, its format allows the reader to import ideas and themes from unit to another, conceptual bridges that span the many centuries. And while it may not offer flashy multi-colour maps and illustrations, its length and price will speak for itself. Whether you are new to the field or have taught world history for years, this text will help you impart to your students the a global perspective while at the same time providing coverage of the peoples of each regional culture.
