ALZHEIMER DISEASE IN THE MIDDLE-AGED
[Hyun Sil Jeong (ed)]
Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Age is the most important known risk factor for AD. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65. AD is a slow disease, starting with mild memory problems and ending with severe brain damage. The course the disease takes and how fast changes occur vary from person to person. On average, AD patients live from 8 to 10 years after they are diagnosed, though the disease can last for as many as 20 years. Current research is aimed at understanding why AD occurs and who is at greatest risk of developing it, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and the ability to identify those at risk, discovering, developing, and testing new treatments, and discovering treatments for behavioural problems in patients with AD. This book gathers state-of-the-art research from leading scientists throughout the world which offers important information on understanding the underlying causes and discovering the most effective treatments for Alzheimer's Disease.

ANGINA PECTORIS
: Etiology, Pathogenesis & Treatment
[Alice Gallo & Gaia Russo (eds)]
This book provides up-to-date research on Angina pectoris, which is commonly known as angina, and is a chest pain due to ischemia (a lack of blood and hence oxygen supply) of the heart muscle, generally due to obstruction or spasm of the coronary arteries (the heart's blood vessels). Coronary artery disease, the main cause of angina, is due to atherosclerosis of the cardiac arteries. The term derives from the Greek ankhon ("strangling") and the Latin pectus ("chest"), and can therefore be translated as "a strangling feeling in the chest". It is common to equate severity of angina with risk of fatal cardiac events. There is a weak relationship between severity of pain and degree of oxygen deprivation in the heart muscle (i.e. there can be severe pain with little or no risk of a heart attack, and a heart attack can occur without pain).

ANGIOGENESIS RESEARCH PROGRESS
[Thomas J Lewis & James Robinson (eds)]
This book is dedicated to new and important research in the field of angiogenesis which is a physiological process involving the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels. Though there has been some debate over this, vasculogenesis is the term used for spontaneous blood-vessel formation, and intussusception is the term for new blood vessel formation by splitting off existing ones. Angiogenesis is a normal process in growth and development, as well as in wound healing. However, this is also a fundamental step in the transition of tumours from a dormant state to a malignant state.

ANGIOTENSIN RESEARCH PROGRESS
[Hina Miura & Yuuto Sasaki (eds)]
Angiotensin is an oligopeptide in the blood that causes vasoconstriction, increased blood pressure, and release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex. It is a hormone and a powerful dipsogen. It is derived from the precursor molecule angiotensinogen, a serum globulin produced in the liver. It plays an important role in the renin-angiotensin system. This book presents the latest research advances in the field.

BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAMPYLOBACTER CONUNDRUM
[Amélie Garénaux, Céline Luchetti-Miganeh & Gwennola Ermel]
Campylobacter jejuni is a microaerophilic and thermophilic pathogen genetically close to Helicobacter pylori. It represents one of the most of concern emerging food pathogens, as it is one of the primary sources of human enteritis, in developed as well as in developing countries. It is also a source of rare but serious neuropathies. Interest in this bacterium has constantly been growing during the last decade, since many antibiotic resistant strains are emerging. The sequencing of C. jejuni genome has revealed a small genome in which a lot of regulation systems are fully understood in well-studied bacteria were absent. To infect humans, a pathogen has to survive different environmental stresses and attacks of the immune system, and also be able to express its virulence factors. The Campylobacter conundrum is the latter: how does this microaerophilic (=sensitive to oxygen) bacterium, owning a small genome and lacking most of the well-known regulation systems, still constitute a hazard for humans? From what is known about C. jejuni genome, this book proposes to draw a parallel between on the one hand the different mechanisms and regulation pathways existing, and on the other hand stress resistance and virulence of this emerging food pathogen.

BODY IMAGE DEVIATION IN CHRONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA
[Reiko Koide & Akira Tamaoka]
Body image aberration in schizophrenia was earlier conceived as delusional and hallucinatory symptoms. However, perceptions of schizophrenia have changed dramatically, especially with the concept of negative symptoms in the 1980s and in the 1990s, to include the neurocognitive aspects of schizophrenia. Deviations in schizophrenics' body image from the standard underlying various behaviours or allegations concerning the body should be now refocused. In this book, using the Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ), comprised of three hypothetical components, anatomical, functional and psychological, attempts were made to resolve some primary questions. They were (1) whether or not there is any related clinical characteristics to schizophrenic body image aberration, (2) whether there are aberrant components of body image specific to schizophrenia, (3) whether or not there is unique link between depression and body image in schizophrenia.

CURRENT ORTHOPAEDIC PRACTICE
: Essential Revision Notes for Postgraduate Exams
[Sanjeev Agarwal MS FRCS Ed (Tr & Orth)]
The book is intended as a concise overview of current orthopaedic practice. It will be of interest to orthopaedic surgeons in practice and to orthopaedic trainees -- both specialist and basic surgical, in particular, orthopaedic specialist registrars in the UK preparing for the exam, or trainees in other countries at an equivalent stage of orthopaedic training. Medical students doing orthopaedic attachments will find it a practical reference tool. In addition, individuals involved in the care of orthopaedic patients, such as physiotherapists and nurse practitioners, will find the book useful. With increasing sub-specialisation in orthopaedic surgery, it is more difficult for the specialist to keep abreast of recent changes and current trends in the management of orthopaedic conditions other than their own area of interest. This book aims to fill that void and will be an easily readable source with information that is concise and current. Emphasis is placed on the current literature and an effort has been made to provide evidence on controversial topics with annotated references incorporated into the text. These will be a useful resource for further reading. Any reader wishing to gain insight into 21st century orthopaedic surgery will find this book of interest and value.

DIAGNOSIS & IMAGING OF CHRONIC PANCREATITIS
[Kenneth Coenegrachts, Hans Rigauts, Vincent De Wilde & Vincent Denolin (eds)]
The insidious nature of disease taken into account, the majority of patients with chronic or malignant pancreatic disease present late in their course and even with early diagnosis, mortality rates of pancreatic cancer are high. In anticipation of a better understanding of the molecular biology and the epigenesis in the origin and progression of disease, benign and malignant as well, the most challenging items in the diagnosis and management reside at present in endoscopic and radiological pancreatic imaging. In these the diagnosis of early chronic pancreatitis, of early pancreatic cancer, the differentiation of a pancreatic mass in the setting of chronic pancreatitis and the accurate staging of potentially respectable pancreatic cancer with respect to the dorsal extension are of utmost importance. Focus in this book is on the diagnostic and imaging challenges of chronic pancreatitis and the differentiation with pancreatic cancer in an early stage.

FERTILITY RESEARCH TRENDS
[Grace Harris & Chloe Roberts (eds)]
Fertility is the natural capability of giving life. As a measure, the "Fertility Rate" is the number of children born per couple, person or population. This is different to fecundity, which is defined as the potential for reproduction (influenced by gamete production, fertilisation and carrying a pregnancy to term). Human fertility depends on factors of nutrition, sexual behaviour, culture, instinct, endocrinology, timing, economics, way of life, and emotions. Animal fertility has no fewer complexities, and may display many interesting mechanisms. This book presents the latest research from around the world in this field.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE & HOSPITAL REFORM
((Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Volume 16))
[Lynn McDonald (ed)]
The 'Collected Works of Florence Nightingale' series demonstrates Nightingale's astute use of the political process and report on her extensive correspondence with royalty, viceroys, cabinet ministers and international leaders, including such notables as Queen Victoria and W E Gladstone. It will also contain a great deal of new material on family relations. Sixteen printed volumes are scheduled and will record her enormous and largely unpublished correspondence, previously published books, articles and pamphlets, many of which have long been out of print. There will be full publication in electronic form, permitting readers to easily pursue their particular interests. Extensive databases, notably a chronology and a names index, will also be published in electronic form, again permitting convenient access to persons interested not only in Nightingale but in other figures of the time. The series will confirm Nightingale as an important and significant nineteenth-century scholar and illustrate how she integrated her scholarship with political activism. Indispensable to scholars, and accessible and revealing to the general reader, it will show there is much more to know about Florence Nightingale than the 'lady with the lamp'.

MY LIFE AS A PSYCHIATRIST
: Memoirs & Essays
[Ajita Chakraborty]
At the age of 12 or 13, Ajita Chakraborty read Moner Khela [The games the mind plays] by Bijoylal Chattopadhyay, who interpreted the characters of many fictional characters through psychoanalysis, resulting in a lifelong fascination and commitment to psychiatry. As the first woman psychiatrist in India, aged 82, Chakraborty looks back at her life and a work, talking frankly about herself, her unconventional family and broken home, the 'confusions' of her childhood that propelled her to becoming a psychiatrist. Qualified as a doctor, she sailed to England in 1952, to further her medical education, training as a psychiatrist at the well-known Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry in London, working in British mental hospitals for almost ten years, and also obtaining qualifications such as DPM and MRCP. She returned to India in 1960, where modern psychiatry was still a fledgling, considered as subordinate to 'neurology'. As the first woman in the field she faced considerable hostility and opposition, and saw her dreams of setting up an advanced department of psychiatry and elevating its then lowly status fail. Indeed the book throws considerable light on the sociology on medicine and discusses why Chakraborty and her friends who had returned with medical qualifications gained abroad were thwarted in their attempts to set up a modern public health system (which exists in a haphazard way today]. Of considerable interest is Chakraborty's discussion on why psychiatry taught in the West cannot be applied directly in another culture, emphasising the need and significance of transcultural psychology in a very complex society like India. The second part of the book offers a selection from her essays, published in various distinguished journals, which are indeed an essential part of the memoir as they illustrate in 'theoretical and concrete terms what is dealt with anecdotally and personally in the memoir'.

NEW HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE RESEARCH
[George V Artwelle & Francis G Wislon]
Growth hormone (GH) or somatotropin (STH) is a protein hormone that stimulates growth and cell reproduction in humans and other animals. It is a 191-amino acid; single chain polypeptide hormone which is synthesised, stored, and secreted by the somatotroph cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland. HGH promotes growth in children and plays an important role in adult metabolism. The body secretes the hormone, in decreasing amounts, throughout our lifetimes. The amount of hormone in the body can be measured by levels of IGF-1 (Insulin Growth Factor). Growth hormone has a profound effect on all the cells of the body, more than any other hormone because it is the cell generator. This book presents the latest research in the field.

NEW MALARIA RESEARCH
[Maynard R Hoche (ed)]
This book is dedicated to recent research advances on malaria which is an infectious disease that is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions. It infects between 300 and 500 million people every year and causes between one and three million deaths annually, mostly among young children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria is not just a disease commonly associated with poverty, but is also a cause of poverty and a major hindrance to economic development. Malaria is one of the most common infectious diseases and an enormous public-health problem. The disease is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium. The most serious forms of the disease are caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, but other related species (Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae) can also infect humans. This group of human-pathogenic Plasmodium species are usually referred to as malaria parasites. Malaria parasites are transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. The parasites multiply within red blood cells, causing symptoms that include fever, anaemia, chills, flu-like illness, and in severe cases, coma and death. Malaria transmission can be reduced by preventing mosquito bites with mosquito nets and insect repellents or by mosquito control by spraying insecticides inside houses and draining standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs. One of the most important recent advances in malaria research is the mapping of the Plasmodium falciparum genome. For the next five to ten years, until an effective vaccine is developed, malaria control will largely be dependent on vector control measures such as improvements in housing construction, source reduction, impregnated bed-nets, and residual insecticide treatment.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON WOMEN & DEPRESSION
[William Hansson & Erik Olsson (eds)]
This book presents new and important research from around the world on depression which is a serious medical illness affecting 5 to 8 percent of the adult population in a given year. Unlike normal emotional experiences of sadness, loss, or passing mood states, major depression is persistent and can significantly interfere with an individual's thoughts, behaviour, mood, activity, and physical health. Among all medical illnesses, major depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and many other developed countries. Depression occurs twice as frequently in women as in men, for reasons that are not fully understood. More than half of those who experience a single episode of depression will continue to have episodes that occur as frequently as once or even twice a year. Without treatment, the frequency of depressive illness as well as the severity of symptoms tends to increase over time. Left untreated, depression can lead to suicide.

NEW RESEARCH ON SHORT-TERM MEMORY
[Noah B Johansen (ed)]
Short-term memory, sometimes referred to as "primary", "working" or "active" memory, is said to hold a small amount of information for about 20 seconds. Estimates of short-term memory capacity vary -- from about 3 or 4 elements (i.e., words, digits, or letters) to about 9 elements: a commonly cited capacity is 7±2 elements. In contrast, long-term memory indefinitely stores a seemingly unlimited amount of information. Short-term memory can be described as the capacity (or capacities) for holding in mind, in an active, highly available state, a small amount of information. The information held in short-term memory may be: recently processed sensory input; items recently retrieved from long-term memory; or the result of recent mental processing, although that is more generally related to the concept of working memory. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

This book is devoted to new research on epinephrine (INN) sometimes spelled "epinephrin" or "adrenalin" respectively, which is a hormone when carried in the blood and a neurotransmitter when it is released across a neuronal synapse. It is a catecholamine, a sympathomimetic monoamine derived from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. When secreted into the bloodstream; it rapidly prepares the body for action in emergency situations. The hormone boosts the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles, while suppressing other non-emergency bodily processes (digestion in particular). It increases heart rate and stroke volume, dilates the pupils, and constricts arterioles in the skin and gut while dilating arterioles in skeletal muscles. It elevates the blood sugar level by increasing catalysis of glycogen to glucose in the liver, and at the same time begins the breakdown of lipids in fat cells. Like some other stress hormones, epinephrine has a suppressive effect on the immune system. Although epinephrine does not have any psychoactive effects, stress or arousal also releases norepinephrine in the brain. Norepinephrine has similar actions in the body, but is also psychoactive. Epinephrine is used as a drug to treat cardiac arrest and other cardiac dysrhythmias resulting in diminished or absent cardiac output; its action is to increase peripheral resistance via á1-adrenoceptor vasoconstriction, so that blood is shunted to the body's core, and the â1-adrenoceptor response which is increased cardiac rate and output (the speed and pronouncement of heart beats). This beneficial action comes with a significant negative consequence -- increased cardiac irritability -- which may lead to additional complications immediately following an otherwise successful resuscitation. Alternatives to this treatment include vasopressin, a powerful antidiuretic which also increases peripheral vascular resistance leading to blood shunting via vasoconstriction, but without the attendant increase in myocardial irritability.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE APPROACH TO THE BRAIN
: From Neurons to Consciousness
[L Andrew Coward]
This book is the integrated presentation of a large body of work on understanding the operation of biological brains as systems. The work has been carried out by the author over the last 22 years, and leads to a claim that it is relatively straightforward to understand how human cognition results from and is supported by physiological processes in the brain. This claim has roots in the technology for designing and manufacturing electronic systems which manage extremely complex telecommunications networks with high reliability, in real time and with no human intervention. Such systems perform very large numbers of interacting control features. Although there is little direct resemblance between such systems and biological brains, the ways in which these practical considerations force system architectures within some specific bounds leads to an understanding of how different but analogous practical considerations constrain the architectures of brains within different bounds called the Recommendation Architecture. These architectural bounds make it possible to relate cognitive phenomena to physiological processes.

ADHD & FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDERS (FASD)
[Kieran D O'Malley (ed)]
This multi-author book will discuss the history and clinical presentation of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders(FASD) i.e Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND). These developmental neuropsychiatric disorders result from prenatal exposure to alcohol during any gestational period of pregnancy. The book will particularly address the co-occurring presence of ADHD in patients with FASD. ADHD is the most frequent neuropsychiatric presentation of FASD throughout the lifespan and it is particularly difficult to manage because the underlying pathophysiology is related to prenatal neurotoxic brain injury. Although prenatal alcohol exposure , and the resulting FASD, is recognised as the commonest preventable cause of intellectual disability, many clinicians and educators are not aware that 75 to 80% of the patients with FASD have I.Q.s over 70. Thus, the neuropsychiatric presentation of FASD can often be unrecognised or misunderstood. FASD are the true clinical ' masqueraders' and ADHD is their most likely disguise! The authors are all experienced professionals from a wide range of disciplines working throughout the USA and Canada. They have been involved in the diagnosis, research and management of FASD for many years and this book will bring their collective knowledge regarding management from infancy to adulthood to an inter-professional audience.

ADOLESCENT SMOKING & HEALTH RESEARCH
[Martin M Lapointe (ed)]
Cigarette smoking during childhood and adolescence produces significant health problems among young people, including cough and phlegm production, an increase in the number and severity of respiratory illnesses, decreased physical fitness, an unfavourable lipid profile and potential retardation in the rate of lung growth and the level of maximum lung function in addition to leading to long-term smoking and the numerous diseases connected with that including cancer and others. In this new book adolescent smoking is researched pertaining to the health complications that young adults will endure, as well as the different social aspects of what causes an adolescent to begin smoking in the first place including peer pressure. Several methods of smoking cessation are discussed.

ADOLESCENT TODAY IN MEDICINE
[Nicolas Zdanowicz, Ann de Braconier-d'Alcantara, V Delvenne, V Dubois, P Eeckeleers, Ch Reynaert & P Schepens (eds)]
During the past 10 years, it has become clear that adolescence is a crucial time for the acquisition of behaviours that will favour good overall health. Indeed, the more adolescents who are able to make favourable decisions regarding their health, the more effective a prevention policy we will have for a number of diseases and illnesses (cardiovascular, psychiatric, cancer, etc.). The specialist's goal is to have the young person assume more responsibility for his or her health. Such a goal should take into account a number of factors specific to this age group. Accordingly, adolescents should not be thought of simply as miniature adults. If disease is defined in the adult as a loss of good health, it is defined as a problem in the development of good health during adolescence. At this age, the state of one's health can be attributed, in part, to various adolescent stresses such as family relationships, depressive experiences, and behaviours that include experimentation with drugs. A health care professional must be able to take all of these factors into account. This book gives a voice to the various specialists who encourage this particular way of thinking when approaching adolescents and their health.

AIDS
: Policies & Programs
[Gene M Shelling (ed)]
The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is a disease of the body’s immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIDS is characterised by the death of CD4 cells (an important part of the body’s immune system), which leaves the body vulnerable to life-threatening conditions such as infections and cancers. This book explores how this deadly virus has affected America and high-risk children, and presents reports on different forms of funding provided by the international and United States governments, and the fluctuating rates of AIDS cases.

ANATOMY OF A MEDICAL SCHOOL
: A history of medicine at the University of Otago, 1875-2000
[Dorothy Page]
What makes a medical school? Certainly not bricks and mortar, essential though they be. People and ever more people, yes. Knowing what to teach and how to teach it, yes. An adjacent hospital, certainly. Partnership with Government, certainly. And, importantly, a host academic institution and a supportive community within which to flourish. The 10,000th graduate of the Otago Medical School was capped in December 2006. Since the 1970s it has in fact been three schools, based in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington. Its graduates include many distinguished researchers and practitioners all over the world. Modelled on the Edinburgh School, and operating within a relatively new university, the Otago School had a long struggle for resources in a country that was still establishing its home economy. Often only the vision and determination of individual staff carried it forward. And the world in which it operated kept changing, with several revolutions in medicine, technology, and society. As the author says in h

ARTEMISININS IN MALARIA THERAPY
[Qigui Li, Wilbur K Milhous & Peter J Weina]
This book presents an innovative assessment in the current and newer treatments of malaria therapy. Recently, a new class of antimalarial compounds has come to light which may assist in winning the battle with this ancient scourge. The artemisinins are antimalarials derived from the Chinese herb, Artemisia Annua. These compounds clear the parasites from the blood more rapidly than other antimalarial agents and have recently been recommended by the World Health Organisation as first line therapy in the fight against this age old killer. Intravenous formulations of artemisinins have been used in much of the world and represent an improvement in efficacy and safety for severe malaria. Much of this research data is used for the first time from databases at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The comprehensive summary, accumulated wealth data, understanding views, and summaries will raise this book head and shoulders above any other of its type.

AUTISM RESEARCH ADVANCES
[L B Zhao (ed)]
This book brings together the latest research in the battle against autism. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism and its associated behaviours have been estimated to occur in as many as 2 to 6 in 1,000 individuals. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Autism is a spectrum disorder. The symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, from mild to severe. Although autism is defined by a certain set of behaviours, children and adults can exhibit any combination of the behaviours in any degree of severity. People with autism process and respond to information in unique ways. In some cases, aggressive and/or self-injurious behaviour may be present.

AVIAN INFLUENZA RESEARCH PROGRESS
[Ernesto P Allegra (ed)]
Avian influenza, or 'bird flu', is a contagious disease of animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. Avian influenza viruses are highly species-specific, but have, on rare occasions, crossed the species barrier to infect humans. In domestic poultry, infection with avian influenza viruses causes two main forms of disease, distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence. The so-called 'low pathogenic' form commonly causes only mild symptoms (ruffled feathers, a drop in egg production) and may easily go undetected. The highly pathogenic form is far more dramatic. It spreads very rapidly through poultry flocks, causes disease affecting multiple internal organs, and has a mortality that can approach 100%, often within 48 hours.

BENIGN FOCAL EPILEPSIES IN INFANCY, CHILDHOOD & ADOLESCENCE
[N Fejerman & R H Caraballo]
It is well known that the incidence of epilepsies is higher in this age period than in any other time in the life span. The frequent occurrence of seizures refractory to antiepileptic drug treatments is of great concern. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the group of benign epilepsy syndromes presented in this book is clearly more prevalent in childhood than the intractable epilepsies. Neurologists and paediatricians should be familiar with these conditions because accurate diagnosis, and its consequent good prognosis, may save much suffering to the family. Special emphasis, however, is given to the small proportion of children who, in spite of presenting a usually benign disease, show an atypical evolution which hampers their neuropsychological development. It is fundamental to be aware of the possible ill effects of some antiepileptic drugs in these cases. Finally, advancements in the recognition of new -- and not so rare -- epileptic syndromes are presented. All the subjects are supported by extensive experience of the authors based in large series of patients.

BIRD FLU
: Health, Safety & Contingency Guidelines
[Maddula R Reddy]
Asia, Africa and Europe have in the recent years witnessed outbreaks of Avian Influenza resulting in the deaths and culling of over 200 million poultry resulting in huge economic losses besides adversely affecting farmers, households, the poultry industry, tourism and trade relations countries and nations. Many countries in the South-East Asia region are on the flight paths of migrating birds, some of which could be carrying Avian Influenza virus. In view of the epidemiological situation, all countries in the region are vulnerable to the influenza pandemic. Threat of world influenza pandemic has never been imminent. To combat this grave threat, it is essential for countries to be well prepared. Experts predict it is only a matter of time before a bird flu strain will mutate and become transmissible between humans. Once that happens, a pandemic like the Spanish flu that resulted in over 50 million deaths, overwhelming hospital and medical services could be inevitable. This book includes a detailed glossary of terms and a comprehensive index to clarify all the technical and general concepts about this deadly virus. WHO guidelines are provided in detail. The prevention and preparedness of activities that facilitate the response and recovery during and after influenza pandemic are important aspects that are included in this book.

CANCER
: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic
[Guy Dauncey, Liz Armstrong & Anne Wordsworth]
Cancer -- the word strikes fear in people's hearts. With more people getting cancer every year, the big question must be: How can we prevent this epidemic? This book offers solid evidence that many cancers are preventable, since their causes lie with the contamination of our bodies by pollution from the air we breathe, the products we use, the water we drink, and the food we eat. It is not being caused by just diet, smoking, and the noon-day sun! The book takes a positive, solutions-based approach to this unwanted disease. Its pages are filled with practical advice and success stories that will inspire you to act to protect your family, your neighbours, your fellow workers, and future generations. Each solution is laid out on two pages, with websites for follow-up. It includes solutions for individuals, parents, youth, action groups, healthcare agencies, cities, labour, businesses, governments, and the world as a whole. It provides clear information about ways to prevent cancer, and should eliminate forever the mistaken belief that we don't know how to stop this terrible epidemic. The book will appeal to anyone whose life has been touched by cancer, and everyone who wants to stop it.

CANCER DRUG RESISTANCE RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES
[Liman S Torres (ed)]
One of the main causes of failure in the treatment of cancer is the development of drug resistance by the cancer cells. The design of cancer chemotherapy has become increasingly sophisticated, yet there is no cancer treatment that is 100% effective against disseminated cancer. Resistance to treatment with anticancer drugs results from a variety of factors including individual variations in patients and somatic cell genetic differences in tumours, even those from the same tissue of origin. Frequently resistance is intrinsic to the cancer, but as therapy becomes more and more effective, acquired resistance has also become common. The most common reason for acquisition of resistance to a broad range of anticancer drugs is expression of one or more energy-dependent transporters that detect and eject anticancer drugs from cells, but other mechanisms of resistance including insensitivity to drug-induced apoptosis and induction of drug-detoxifying mechanisms probably play an important role in acquired anticancer drug resistance. Studies on mechanisms of cancer drug resistance have yielded important information about how to circumvent this resistance to improve cancer chemotherapy and have implications for pharmacokinetics of many commonly used drugs. This book presents new and important research in this field.

CANCER METASTASES RESEARCH
[Akira Watanabe (ed)]
Metastasis is the spread of a disease from one organ or part to another non-contiguous organ or part. Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasise. Cancer cells can "break away" from a primary tumour, penetrate into lymphatic and blood vessels, circulate through the bloodstream, and grow in a distant focus (metastasise) in normal tissues elsewhere in the body. Metastasis is considered a hallmark of malignancy. All tumours can metastasise albeit to varying degrees, barring a few exceptions (eg. Glioma and Basal cell carcinoma never metastasize). When cancer cells spread to form a new tumour, it is called a secondary, or metastatic tumour, and its cells are like those in the original tumour. This means, for example, that if breast cancer spreads (metastasizes) to the lung, the secondary tumour is made up of abnormal breast cells (not abnormal lung cells). The disease in the lung is then called metastatic breast cancer (not lung cancer). Only malignant tumour cells and infections have the capacity to metastasize. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

CANCER OF THE GALLBLADDER
: New Research
[John T Whitten (ed)]
Gallbladder cancer is characterised by delayed diagnosis, ineffective treatment and poor prognosis. Surgical resection is considered the treatment of choice for radical therapy (cure), however only a minority have early (stage I) gallbladder cancer, usually found incidentally during cholecystectomy. The role of other adjutant radical or palliative therapies in gallbladder cancer has not been fully clarified in the literature. Chemotherapy is experimental and is not very helpful, while the role of radiotherapy is controversial. It appears that gallbladder carcinomas are not as radio-resistant as was formerly thought. In the majority of cases radiotherapy has a palliative role and occasionally plays an important function in the cure of the disease in combination with complete surgical resection. This book gathers significant new research on the subject of gallbladder cancer.

CANCER RESEARCH AT THE LEADING EDGE
[Ignatius K Martakis (ed)]
Cancer is a group of different diseases (more than 100) characterised by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer can arise in many sites and behave differently depending on its organ of origin. If a cancer spreads (metastasises), the new tumour bears the same name as the original (primary) tumour. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the battle against cancer and in understanding its underlying biological mechanisms. This research progress has resulted in many experimental treatments and cures. This book presents new and important research from around the world.

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH & DISEASE RESEARCH TRENDS
[Carl P Hogan (ed)]
Cardiovascular disease refers to the class of diseases that involve the heart and/or blood vessels (arteries and veins). While the term technically refers to any disease that affects the cardiovascular system, it is usually used to refer to those related to atherosclerosis (arterial disease). Most Western countries face high and increasing rates of cardiovascular disease. Each year, heart disease kills more Americans than cancer. Diseases of the heart alone caused 30% of all deaths, with other diseases of the cardiovascular system also causing death and disability. It is the number one cause of death and disability in the United States and most European countries. A large histological study (PDAY) showed vascular injury accumulates from adolescence, making primary prevention efforts necessary from childhood. This new and important book presents leading-edge research on both cardiovascular health and disease.

CELL APOPTOSIS
: Regulation & Environmental Factors
[Lawrence B Shultz (ed)]
Apoptosis is the regulated form of cell death. It is a complex process defined by a set of characteristic morphological and biochemical features that involves the active participation of affected cells in a self-destruction cascade. This programmed cell death plays a critical role in physiological functions such as cell deletion during embryonic development, balancing cell number in continuously renewing tissues and immune system development. Additionally, a dysregulation of apoptosis is underlying in numerous pathological situations such as Parkinson, Alzheimer´s disease and cancer. A number of studies have pointed out an association between consumption of fruits and vegetables, and certain beverages such as tea and wine, which are rich in polyphenols, with reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Apoptosis is also the regulatory mechanism involved in the removal of unnecessary cells during development and in tissue homeostasis in a wide range of organisms from insects to mammals. This book deals with cell apoptosis regulation and environmental factors.

Apoptosis is also the regulatory mechanism involved in the removal of unnecessary cells during development and in tissue homeostasis in a wide range of organisms from insects to mammals. This book presents important research from around the world.

CELL APOPTOTIC SIGNALLING PATH
[Charles O Pickens (ed)]
Apoptosis is the regulated form of cell death. It is a complex process defined by a set of characteristic morphological and biochemical features that involves the active participation of affected cells in a self-destruction cascade. This programmed cell death plays a critical role in physiological functions such as cell deletion during embryonic development, balancing cell number in continuously renewing tissues and immune system development. Additionally, a dysregulation of apoptosis is underlying in numerous pathological situations such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. This book focuses on cell apoptotic signalling pathways.

CERVICAL CANCER RESEARCH TRENDS
[Eleanor P Bankes (ed)]
Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix. World-wide, it is the second most common cancer of women. It may be present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts. Most scientific studies point to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection responsible for 90% of the cases of cervical cancer. There are 7 most common types of HPV - 16, 18, 31, 33, 42, 52 and 58. Types 16 and 18 being the most common cause of the cancer. Treatment is with surgery (including local excision) in early stages and chemotherapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease. This book presents important research in the field from around the globe.

CHEMOKINE RESEARCH TRENDS
[Leah R Grinwald (ed)]
Chemokines are the cytokines that may activate or chemoattract leukocytes. Each chemokine contains 65-120 amino acids, with molecular weight of 8-10 kD. Their receptors belong to G-protein-coupled receptors. Inflammatory chemokines are released from a wide variety of cells in response to bacterial infection, viruses and agents that cause physical damage such as silica or the urate crystals that occur in gout. They function mainly as chemoattractants for leukocytes, recruiting monocytes, neutrophils and other effector cells from the blood to sites of infection or damage. They can be released by many different cell types and serve to guide cells involved in innate immunity and also the lymphocytes of the adaptive immune system. The cells that are attracted by chemokines follow a signal of increasing chemokine concentration to the site of infection or tissue injury. Some chemokines also have roles in the development of lymphocytes, migration and angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels).Since the entry of HIV into host cells requires chemokine receptors, their antagonists are being developed to treat AIDS.

CHINESE HERBAL DRUG RESEARCH TRENDS
[Felix M Ching (ed)]
Chinese Herbal Medicine -- part of a larger healing system called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also includes acupuncture, massage dietary advice and exercise. TCM is a popular method of treatment -- is actually called Chinese Drug Therapy in China because it uses a wide variety of substances and therapeutic modalities. Plant, animal and mineral substances are all included in the Materia Medica of Chinese Drug Therapy. The earliest uses date back at least 4000 years to the Shang dynasty. Characters representing medicinal substances have been found carved into oracular bone fragments. These were used diagnostically by the Wu Shaman of this time. The earliest materia Medica, the Sheng Nung Peng Tsao, recorded over 10,000 medicinal substances. While there seems to be an almost unlimited amount of medicinal substances, the most commonly used number around 200. Increased attention has begun being given to the field due to several factors: The apparent success stories in many cases; The failure of Western medicine in many disorders; and Realisation on the part of Western researchers that successful drugs can be designed on the basis of Chinese herbal drugs. This new book presents the latest research in the field.

CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA RESEARCH FOCUS
[Chadi Nabhan (ed)]
Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (or "chronic lymphoid leukaemia"), known for short as CLL, is a type of leukaemia in which too many lymphocytes are produced. Although the malignant lymphocytes in CLL may look normal and mature, they are not and these cells may not cope effectively with infection. CLL is the most common form of leukaemia in adults. Men are twice as likely to develop CLL as women. However, the key risk factor is age. Over 75% of new cases are diagnosed in patients over age 50. This book presents important research from around the world in this field.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS & HEALTH RESEARCH TRENDS
[Alfredo V Lignelli (ed)]
A circadian rhythm is a roughly-24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings, including plants, animals, fungi and cyanobacteria. The term 'circadian', comes from the Latin circa, 'around', and dies, 'day', meaning literally 'about a day'. The formal study of biological temporal rhythms such as daily, weekly, seasonal, and annual rhythms, is called chronobiology. In a strict sense, circadian rhythms are endogenously generated, although they can be modulated by external cues such as sunlight and temperature. Most of a person's body systems demonstrate circadian variations. The body systems with the most prominent circadian variations are the sleep-wake cycle, the temperature regulation system, and the endocrine system. The malfunctioning of a person's circadian system, or biological clock, causes circadian rhythm disorders. Circadian rhythms and their relation to health outcomes in the globalised hyper world of the 21st century are now understood to be extremely important.

COGNITIVE DISORDERS RESEARCH TRENDS
[H C Sentowski (ed)]
Cognitive disorders are disturbances in the mental process related to thinking, reasoning, and judgement. They include delirium, dementia, and other cognitive disorders. Cognition includes the domains of attention, memory, language, gnosis, visuo-spatial function, praxis, and executive function, and is traditionally distinguished from the emotions or 'feelings'. Cognitive disorders may disturb one domain specifically, as in a selective impairment of memory (amnesia) or language (aphasia), or, more often, a combination of deficits, as in mental retardation and dementia.

COMPUTATIONAL LINQUISTIC TEXT PROCESSING
: Logical Form, Semantic Interpretation, Discourse relations & Question Answering
[Roldolfo Delmonte]
The topic of this book is the theoretical foundations of a theory LSLT -- Lexical Semantic Language Theory -- and its implementation in a the system for text analysis and understanding. There are two main tenets of the theory which are supporting the construction of the system is that it is possible to reduce access to domain world knowledge by means of contextual reasoning, i.e. reasoning triggered independently by contextual or linguistic features of the text under analysis. In other words, it adopts what could be termed the Shallow Processing Hypothesis: access to WordNet is reduced and substituted whenever links are missing through inferences on the basis of hand-coded lexical and grammatical knowledge given to the system, which are worked out in a fully general manner. The purpose of the book is to present in detail the scientific foundations of the architecture and components of a (yet to be) implemented system for text understanding and generation, and at the same time to discuss critically some of the possible applications in real world domains in which such an approach could be fruitful.

COPING WITH CANCER
[Léa K Jacobs (ed)]
Millions of people alive today have faced a diagnosis of cancer. Some of them are newly diagnosed or are undergoing treatment. After a diagnosis of cancer, one may feel shock, disbelief, fear, anxiety, guilt, sadness, depression, and anger. Each person may experience some or all of these feelings. People with cancer typically feel the sooner they get rid of the cancer, the better. They may feel rushed to make decisions. People facing cancer often find themselves facing the possibility of their own death. At first, some focus on dying from cancer instead of living with cancer. This new book presents research issues on this topic.

COUMARIN ANTICOAGULANT RESEARCH PROGRESS
[Joseph P Edardes (ed)]
Warfarin (also known under the brand names of Coumadin, Jantoven, Marevan, and Waran) is an anticoagulant medication that is administered orally or, very rarely, by injection. It is used for the prophylaxis of thrombosis and embolism in many disorders. Its activity has to be monitored by frequent blood testing for the international normalised ratio (INR). It is named for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Warfarin is a synthetic derivative of coumarin, a chemical found naturally in many plants, notably woodruff (Galium odoratum, Rubiaceae), and at lower levels in liquorice, lavender and various other species. Warfarin was originally developed as a rat poison; however, more modern poisons are much more potent and toxic (e.g., brodifacoum). Warfarin and contemporary rodenticides belong to the same class of drugs (coumarins) and both decrease blood coagulation by interfering with vitamin K metabolism. For this reason, drugs in this class are also referred to as vitamin K antagonists.

CURRENT OPINIONS IN PEDIATRIC RHEUMATOLOGY
: A Guide for General Practitioners & Pediatricians
[Erbil Unsal (ed)]
The aim of this book is to be a guide to general practitioners and paediatricians under the light of the current concepts. It will not only help the reader to understand the pathogenesis of common childhood rheumatic diseases, but also provide the general practitioners with a current algorithm that will help them to decide what to do and when to seek reference. It is the child with arthritis, recurrent fever, or a non-specific rash that is a diagnostic dilemma, and that is waiting for someone to solve the problem. For this reason, this book includes real case histories with their photos, radiographic findings, and further investigations, where necessary.

DEATH IN THE POT
: The Impact of Food Poisoning on History
[Morton Satin]
In 2005, the Argonne National Laboratory proved that the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven died prematurely from lead poisoning. This is just one example of how poisoning, both natural and deliberate, has affected the course of history. Battles have been lost or won -- as internationally renowned food expert Morton Satin shows-because of unclean, adulterated food. In this engrossing narrative, Satin spans the ancient world to the present day, documenting events both tragic and bizarre through the ages. In the fifth century B.C.E., the great plague of Athens, probably caused by contaminated cereals, led to the defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. In the pre-scientific Middle Ages, illnesses resulting from contaminated food were often attributed to the wrath of God or malevolent spirits. Heavily infectious ergot induced a spasmodic muscle condition, which the Church named "St. Anthony's Fire" and interpreted as retribution by God on heretics. Similarly, in seventeenth-century America the hallucinogenic symptoms of mouldy grain were thought by Puritans to be signs of witchcraft. Even the madness of King George III, which played a role in the American Revolution, may have been induced by accidental arsenic poisoning. In the twentieth century, Satin recounts the efforts of modern industrial societies to make food safer; in some cases these efforts were heroic. For example, in the early days of the Food and Drug Administration a "Poison Squad" was formed, consisting of young scientists who willingly acted as guinea pigs to test the toxic effects of chemical additives. Today, the government has focused on the hazards of food bioterrorism. Satin concludes by describing measures taken to protect the public from intentional and unintentional poisoning, as well as recounting recent poisoning incidents. Both a fascinating glimpse into history from a unique angle and an authoritative reference work on food safety, Death in the Pot offers entertaining and informative reading for laypersons as well as experts in food technology and public health.

DENDRIMERS IN MEDICINE
[Barbara Klajnert & Maria Bryszewska]
The dendrimer is a common name of polymers which are characterised by a specific structure, although their chemical composition can be very different. Dendrimers display several characteristics which distinguish them from linear polymers. All dendrimers are synthesised by attaching branched monomers to the central core molecule. Monomers are attached layer by layer. As a result of such a synthesis, dendrimers posses plenty of terminal, reactive groups on their surface and empty internal cavities. Both of these features can be utilised. Soon after the first synthesis in mid-1980's, dendrimers have become interesting and promising molecules for pharmaceutical and technical aims. The last years brought many new facts about dendrimers impact on biological systems. Both, general toxic studies, as well as detailed research devoted to particular cellular compounds, as DNA or lipid bilayer, were carried out. New types of dendrimers were synthesised and new applications appeared.

DIET & EPILEPSY
[Kristopher J Bough, Douglas A Eagles & Eric Kossoff]
High-fat, low-carbohydrate (ketogenic) diets (KDs) have been used clinically for the treatment of epilepsy for at least 85 years. Clinical indications for initiating such a diet, some of the side effects likely to occur during diet administration and indications for maintenance of the diet and strategies for its discontinuation are considered, largely from the perspective of treating the epileptic patient. Although the diet has most often been used for pediatric patients, recent experience has shown that it can be effective for use with adolescents and adults. The efficacy of dietary treatment of epilepsy has been extended beyond the classical 4:1 LCT (long-chain triglyceride) diet to modified Atkins and low glycemic index diets. Efficacy is most often limited by non-compliance. Among the key variables during administration of such diets are variations in the level of ketonemia, the degree of hypoglycemia and the level of hyperlipidemia. Any or all of these variables may be part of the mechanisms by which KDs reduce seizure incidence and/or severity. Several candidate mechanisms linking diet to the alteration of central nervous system excitability are identified. Lipid catabolism occurs within mitochondria and consumption of KDs leads to increased proliferation and increased size of mitochondria, reflecting increased oxidative stress. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under such conditions is minimized by an increased expression of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) and has consequences for calcium sequestration within the mitochondrial matrix and cytosol. All have potential for diminishing neuronal hyperexcitability. The state of oxidative phosphorylation and ATP/ADP production may affect membrane excitability by altering the activity of the Na/K ATPase or KATP/ADP channels. Classical high-fat diets include elevated levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which may inhibit both Na+ and Ca++ channels and activate tandem-pore potassium (K2p) channels. The net effects of any of these changes will depend upon the identity of the neuronal or glial populations most affected. For example, decreased excitation of excitatory neurons and increased excitation of inhibitory neurons would both act to reduce seizures. A working theoretical model incorporating many of the factors considered in this chapter is proposed.

DIETARY GUIDE
[Albert O Gomber (ed)]
This book is excerpted from 'The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Dietary Guidelines)' and augmented with a full index and a list of questions and answers related to guidelines for diet. It contains science-based advice to promote health and to reduce risk for major chronic diseases through diet and physical activity. Major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States are related to poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Some specific diseases linked to poor diet and physical inactivity include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Furthermore, poor diet and physical inactivity, resulting in an energy imbalance (more calories consumed than expended), are the most important factors contributing to the increase in overweight and obesity.

DIETARY PROTEIN RESEARCH TRENDS
[Janet R Ling (ed)]
Proteins are made of strings of amino acids that form chains known as peptides. Our bodies need dietary protein to accomplish many basic functions, such as building bones, moving muscles, and repairing tissue. Dietary protein, an essential nutrient, comes from meat, dairy, and certain grains and beans. Proteins differ by the types and order of amino acids they contain. Even though there are only 20 amino acids, they create almost endless variations in chains as long as 500 links. Proteins form inside animals (including humans) and plants through processes that synthesize peptides. For humans, we cannot synthesise certain "essential protein," and so we must ingest them through food. These essential proteins are made of phenylalanine, threonine, methionine, tryptophan, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, and valine amino acids. Food from plants, like corn, have incomplete protein, which means they do not contain all the necessary amino acids. Only food from animals, such as cheese and fish, provide complete protein, and don't need to be combined with other protein sources. Examples of complete protein foods are milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, poultry, pork, or any meat. Incomplete proteins include oats, wheat, pasta, lentils, nuts, rice, soy, pears, and seeds. Eating a combination of complementary protein sources, such as grains mixed with legumes, results in a diet of essential protein. This is how vegetarians and vegans maintain health without eating meat or dairy. This book presents the latest research in this dynamic field.

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS RESEARCH PROGRESS
[Kenneth B Moore (ed)]
Discrete mathematics, also called finite mathematics or Decision Maths, is the study of mathematical structures that are fundamentally discrete, in the sense of not supporting or requiring the notion of continuity. Most, if not all, of the objects studied in finite mathematics are countable sets, such as integers, finite graphs, and formal languages. Discrete mathematics has become popular in recent decades because of its applications to computer science. Concepts and notations from discrete mathematics are useful to study or describe objects or problems in computer algorithms and programming languages. In some mathematics curricula, finite mathematics courses cover discrete mathematical concepts for business, while discrete mathematics courses emphasise concepts for computer science majors.

DNA
: How the Biotech Revolution is Changing the Way We Fight Disease
[Frank H Stephenson FH]
In the fall of 2005, leading scientists from the National Cancer Institute announced the beginning of the cancer genome atlas project, a large-scale endeavour to map every gene implicated in cancer and the first step toward development of new therapies for treating this still baffling disease. This spin-off of the human genome project is only the latest exciting research advance in a decades-long quest to fully understand the biochemistry of the human body and thereby gain insights into the secrets of health, disease, and ageing. Biochemist and veteran lab researcher Frank H Stephenson tells the compelling story of how scientists on many fronts are succeeding in the battle against disease. With a gift for making the complexities of genetics and biochemistry understandable to the average reader, Stephenson offers a fascinating tour of the mechanisms of our body and the therapeutic techniques that are gaining in sophistication and effectiveness every year. From heart disease to AIDS and cancer, he helps you understand how the tools of biotechnology are being used to combat our most common afflictions. Stephenson examines a wide variety of health threats and illnesses: HIV infection, the many forms of cancer, asthma, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, obesity, and even erectile dysfunction. Each is discussed in terms of its root cause and treatment in plain, jargon-free language that not only educates but also entertains. This is the ideal primer on the biotechnology revolution for the layperson. Stephenson offers many insights into both the diseases that destroy health and the great promises that biotechnology offers for preserving and prolonging a healthy life.

DNA METHYLATION RESEARCH TRENDS
[Taku B Kobayashi (ed)]
DNA methylation is a type of chemical modification of DNA that can be inherited without changing the DNA sequence. As such, it is part of the epigenetic code and is the most characterised epigenetic mechanism. DNA methylation involves the addition of a methyl group to DNA -- for example, to the number 5 carbon of the cytosine pyrimidine ring. DNA methylation is probably universal in eukaryotes. In humans, approximately 1% of DNA bases undergo DNA methylation. In adult somatic tissues, DNA methylation typically occurs in a CpG dinucleotide context; non-CpG methylation is prevalent in embryonic stem cells. In plants, cytosines are methylated both symmetrically (CpG or CpNpG) and asymmetrically (CpNpNp), where N can be any nucleotide. The methylation status of specific cytosines can be determined using methods based on bisulfite sequencing. This book presents new and important research from around the world in this field.

DNA RESEARCH TRENDS
[Marius P Young (ed)]
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a chemical found primarily in the nucleus of cells. DNA is a long, spiralling molecule that orchestrates the cell's daily operations and provides the genetic blueprint for the physical characteristics of all living organisms. It is the molecule that encodes genetic information in the nucleus of cells. It determines the structure, function and behaviour of the cell. DNA is made up of two complementary strands, the strands intertwine like a spiral staircase to form a structure called a double helix. Subunits, called bases, are the rungs of the staircase. The four nucleotides in DNA contain the bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). This volume presents the latest research from around the world.

DRUG DELIVERY RESEARCH ADVANCES
[Boris O Mashkevich (ed)]
Drug delivery is a term that refers to the delivery of a pharmaceutical compound to humans or animals. Most common methods of delivery include the preferred non-invasive oral (through the mouth), nasal, pneumonial (inhalation), and rectal routes. Many medications, however, can not be delivered using these routes because they might be susceptible to degradation or are not incorporated efficiently. For this reason many protein and peptide drugs have to be delivered by injection. For example, many immunisations are based on the delivery of protein drugs and are often done by injection. Current efforts in the area of drug delivery include the development of targeted delivery in which the drug is only active in the target area of the body (for example, in cancerous tissues) and sustained release formulations in which the drug is released over a period of time in a controlled manner from a formulation. This new book focuses on worldwide research on drug delivery and targeting at the molecular, cellular, and higher levels.

ECONOMICS OF INTANGIBLES
[Gary Zatzman & Rafiqul Islam]
Up to now, economics as a branch of social science has been concerned mainly to map the commercial and financial relations of Humanity, including a wide variety of institutions spawned to sustain livelihoods within these relations. Although these relationships, qua relations, are by definition intangible, the forms by which these relations are expressed -- and in which they may even be quantified, predicted and managed -- are all tangible. Thus we arrive at the tantalising paradox wherein, for economists, tangibles seem to occupy the entire space of interest, even though that which has given rise to their very field in the first place are actually social relations that remain utterly intangible. Always and everywhere, the tangible is also quantifiable. However, lifting this veil uncovers something very strange. To the extent that tangible economic activity takes quantifiable form, it is possible to generalise about the forms themselves and/or to verify them, without reference to any further information as to the intent, conscience or consciousness of those who gave rise to these activities in the first place. This elimination of "subjective factors", such as intention, was long trumpeted as the economists’ greatest success (as social "scientists"). This book presents the many quintessential elements of economics from all around the globe.

ENDOGENOUS NEUROPROTECTION
[Bernhard J Schaller]
Endogenous neuoprotection is a phenomenon where a brief episode of ischemia renders the brain resistant against a subsequent longer-asting ischemia event. Experimentally, the author was able to model hypoxic preconditioning in animal model. Increasing knowledge of this endogenous neuroprotectin by ischemic tolerance may help to minimize neuronal damage following ischemic stroke and hypoxic encephalopathy. This book is, therefore, the first overview of this important topic and will certainly influence further investigations in clinical and neuroscience research.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF COMMON HEALTH CONDITIONS AMONG ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN PRIMARY CARE
[Suzanne McDermott, Robert R Moran & Tan Platt]
The purpose of this book is to provide evidence for physicians about the prevalence for a range of medical conditions by disability, from a primary care prospective. Each chapter focuses on a secondary condition for which adults with DD are at increased risk, decreased risk, and the same risk as the general population. The incidence and prevalence of each of the secondary conditions is presented, and contrasted to the general population. The special challenges for diagnosis and treatment of the secondary condition is highlighted. Finally the book describes a case study that includes physical, social and emotional challenges and ways to accommodate these issues in a primary care practice.
