LAYERS OF MUSICAL MEANING ((Danish Humanist Texts & Studies Series)) [Finn Egeland Hansen] This book is a radical attempt to explain musical meaning as the complex fabric of tension and relaxation resulting from the courses of the individual musical elements: e.g. rhythm, where the musical tension manifests itself by the opposition strong versus weak beats -- or harmony, where the chords of the tonal cadence generate courses of tension and relaxation. It is strongly emphasised that the total structure of contributors to the web of tension/relaxation, in short, the musical style, is constantly changing, and it is an error to believe that any musical way of articulation is eternal: new ways of expression arrive and others drop out gradually -- precisely as with ordinary language. This consideration, however, implies that too many and radical changes over a short period of time are foredoomed to go over the head of the ordinary listener. The radical modernism of the 1950s illustrates how composers in their endeavour to wipe the slate clean in order to start from scratch largely failed. Attempts at semantic interpretations of music are rejected. Such interpretations belong to the private sphere and cannot be scholarly supported. No hermeneutic interpretation, however elaborate, can claim higher truth value than another. { 336pp, 180x250mm, August 2006; PB, £30.00, 8763504243:9788763504249 , Museum Tusculanum Press }
MORIBUND MUSIC : Can Classical Music be Saved? [Carolyn Beckingham] This book set out to answer frequently asked questions about the future of classical music. It addresses the question of whether popular music has taken its place and if so, how much this matters; and explores the origins of the split between classical and popular music, the rise of youth culture and the concept of elitism, together with the consequences of these changes. The phenomenon of 'crossover' music is addressed, and the arguments in favour of, and against, its use as an introduction to classical music for new audiences are put forward. In a wide-ranging discourse, the author tackles many of the issues that divide music lovers, including audience behaviour and the place of music in schools. A major focus is on the problems of opera: the accusation that it is inherently sexist, the question of original languages as opposed to translation, surtitles, amplification and production styles. This book is essential reading for all those interested in how music plays an essential and informative role in everyday life. REVIEW: "I've stood in front of audiences, including at the Sage (Gateshead), and you just see a sea of white hair. When I watched the final on TV, I could see only a few people who were my age -- and they were mostly my friends. It annoys me so much that classical music is pigeonholed as something aristocratic and uptight, snobby and above itself. Ultimately things will have to change, because once the current group of concertgoers are dead, no one will be listening." -- Mark Simpson, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006, Guardian, 17 July 2006. { 224pp, 152x229mm, September 2008; PB, £17.95, 1845192761:9781845192761 , Sussex Academic Press }

CHEMISTRY AS MUSIC [LinShu Liu & G E Zaikov (eds)] This volume has the title CHEMISTRY AS MUSIC because both chemistry and music can be good or bad, joyful or sorrowful, fast and slow. Not everybody can play as well as Nikolo Paganini, Ferenz List, or Sergei Rakhmaninov, and similarly, not everyone can accomplish complicated organic and inorganic syntheses. In both fields, golden hands are needed (preferably combined with a brilliant mind).The editors of this new book have tried to include in this volume papers on organic synthesis, biochemical physics, chemical kinetics, physical chemistry, and chemical physics. It is the fastest-evolving science today, on the cutting edge of modern technology. The authors of the papers are some of the leading researchers in their fields from the best research centres of their countries: representatives of pure and applied chemistry. { 187pp, 180x260mm, September 2007; HB, £85.99, 1600218946:9781600218941 , Nova Science Publishers }
EAGLE MINDS : Selected Correspondence of Istvan Anhalt & George Rochberg (1961-2005) [Alan M Gillmor (ed)] EAGLE MINDS -- a selection from the correspondence between the Canadian composer and scholar Istvan Anhalt and his American counterpart George Rochberg -- is a splendid chronicle and a penetrating analysis of the swerving socio-cultural movements of a volatile half-century as observed by two highly gifted individuals. Beginning in 1961 and spanning forty-four years, their conversation embraces not only music but other forms of contemporary art, as well as politics, philosophy, religion, and mysticism. The letters chronicle the deepening of their friendship over the years, and the openness, honesty, and genuine warmth between them provide the reader with an intimate look at their personalities. A fascinating intellectual tension emerges between the two men as they record their individual responses to musical modernism, to changing political and social realities, and to their Jewish heritage and sense of place, one as a son of Ukrainian immigrants to the United States, the other as a refugee from war-torn Hungary. Allowing us a privileged glimpse into the private lives and thoughts of these fascinating men, EAGLE MINDS is a valuable tool for scholars interested in North American composers in the late twentieth century and essential reading for anyone interested in the cultural and social history of that era. { 402pp, 155x230mm, June 2008; HB, £49.99, 1554580188:9781554580187 , Wilfrid Laurier University Press }

IS THIS TO BE MY SOUVENIR? : Jazz Photos from the Timme Rosenkrantz Collection 1918-1969 [Frank Büchmann-Møller] This collection of 300 unique photographs, many of them previously unpublished, is a treat for jazz-lovers and comes as a fitting tribute both to the golden age of jazz and to Timme Rosenkrantz, the prominent figure of Danish jazz, who stands behind the collection and who in his way embodied the spirit of that age. The book contains portraits of such well-known musicians as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday and Glenn Miller. Just as much space, however, is given to names which are less well-known today. { 202pp, 230x230mm, January 2000; HB, £30.60, 8778384656:9788778384652 , University Press of Southern Denmark }
JACK THORP'S SONGS OF THE COWBOYS [Mark L Gardner (ed); Illustrations by Ron Kil; Musical performances by Mark L Gardner & Rex Rideout] In 1908 a local rancher and surveyor by the name of N Howard 'Jack' Thorp walked into the cramped offices of the Estancia News in Estancia, New Mexico, and inquired of the printer about publishing a small book of 'cowboy songs'. For at least nineteen years, Thorp had sought out cowboy ballads and poems from across the west -- from New Mexico and Texas to Wyoming and Utah, and had written a few ditties himself. The finished volume, printed for just six cents a copy, included twenty-three songs and was the first book published devoted exclusively to cowboy songs. Thorp is recognised for being the first person to take a serious interest in collecting and preserving the ballads penned by ranchers to calm cattle on the range. This new edition of an oft-reprinted classic features an essay by western historian and musician Mark Gardner, and line illustrations by noted western artists and rancher Ron Kil. Included with the book is a CD of a recording of a selection of songs and poems taken from both the original 1908 edition and 1921 expanded second edition. In their renditions, Gardner and Rex Rideout recreate the historic music preserved by Thorp with vintage instruments and authentic styles. { 80pp, 170x255mm, August 2005; PB, £16.99, 0890134782:9780890134788 , Museum of New Mexico Press }
MAESTRO : Conductor or Metro-gnome? Reflections from the Rostrum [Myer Fredman] This book explains what is actually involved in being a conductor and unravels some of the mystique that surrounds this intensely public profession. The author, who has worked with orchestras and opera companies all over the world, writes about all aspects of the art and craft, and discusses how a career can progress and is the result of the observation of many conductors in action. Features: 'The Craft that precedes Art' sets out the musicianship requirements and physical gestures that have to be subconsciously embedded during formal training; 'Roads to the Rostrum' covers the differing needs of a permanent or a guest contract, the pitfalls of building a programme and relationships, be they with the orchestra’s leader, soloists, composers, the audience or the critics; 'In the Theatre' is about conducting for opera and dance as distinct from concert conducting, and the process of preparing opera for performance; 'Janus on the Podium' is a resumé of how conductors came into being and how they evolved into the powerful figures they are today; 'A Pilgrim’s Progress' describes the author’s experience from his student days, to London, Glyndebourne and Australia as an example of how a career may unfold; 'The Index and Glossary of Terms' provides easy to understand explanations of tempo indications, the numerous dance styles, symphonic poems, etc. Written in non-technical language, this book is essential reading for all music lovers, as well as professional aspiring maestri. { 130pp, 152x229mm, November 2005; PB, £13.95, 1845191242:9781845191245 , Sussex Academic Press }
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS [Jon Whiteley] The Ashmolean’s collection of European stringed instruments is not large but it is very famous. Several of the instruments in the Ashmolean are among the rarest and most beautiful of their kind and most are, in some way, exceptional. The collection was founded on a group of instruments which was given to the museum by the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons in 1939 and has since been increased by two bequests and by an important group of bows and instruments given by Albert Cooper in 1999. The firm of W.E. Hill & Sons was founded in 1880 and by the early 20th century the firm had achieved an unrivalled reputation in making, restoring, and selling stringed instruments. In the course of handling and repairing instruments, the Hills became increasingly aware of the damage that was being inflicted on early viols and violins by constant playing and repeated restoration. This concern gave rise to the idea of donating a select group of rare instruments to a museum where they would be preserved from further harm, and the first instruments were handed over in 1939. The present handbook discusses and illustrates every stringed instrument in the collection and is chiefly intended for the many visitors to the Hill Collection and for the wider public who might wish for more information about the instruments and some background history. { ca96pp, 145x210mm, June 2008; HB, £11.95, 185444199X:9781854441997 / PB, £7.95, 1854442007:9781854442000 , Ashmolean Museum }
OFFERTORY & ITS VERSES : Research, Past, Present & Future [Roman Hankeln (ed)] Proceedings of an International Symposium at the Centre for Medieval Studies, Trondheim, 25 and 26 September 2004. In the melodies of the Gregorian offertories the art of the solo singers in the medieval church reached its highpoint. As if to confirm this position of superiority, a distinct revival of interest in the offertory has been noticeable from the 19th century onwards, not only on the field of scholarly research but also in practical musical performances. The musical style of the Gregorian offertory inspires description in superlatives. Chant handbooks have always been unanimous about its climactic (but also exceptional) status because of its enormous length, its practically non-formulaic melodic elaboration, its high range -- often exceeding the limits of medieval modal theory -- its occasional chromaticism and its highly exceptional treatment of the text. All these features are extremely rare in other chants of the Roman Mass. In many ways the state of today's research stands in sharp contrast to the importance of the topic for our understanding of medieval musical culture. In the autumn of 2004, therefore, a symposium at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Archbishop's Palace, Trondheim, brought together Chant scholars and a Latin philologist from the USA, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Norway to pool present knowledge in this area and to discuss methods and ideas for future research. Wellknown experts in the field of the offertory, also associated with the study group CANTUS PLANUS of the International Musicological Society, the participants form a sort of international offertory-network, having determined the direction of research in this area during the last fifty years. Research on offertories reflects the main challenges to modern musicology and philology, from heuristic problems of the many hundred medieval sources to intricate questions of the interpretation of style, function and Rezeptionsgeschichte as well. Furthermore, as with every Gregorian chant genre, the study of the offertory provides insights not only into the musical history but also the cultural history of Western society. { 181pp, 155x230mm, March 2007; HB, £29.50, 8251922046:9788251922043 , Tapir Academic Press }
ORPHEUS IN THE WILDERNESS : A History of Music in Denver, 1860-1925 [Henry Miles] This book offers an in-depth look at the city's musical development -- from banjo and tambourine solos to symphony orchestras. Originating in Denver's pioneer churches, serious music rapidly expanded from choral singing to recitals, concerts, and chamber music. Civil and military bands joined in the procession of musical forms, and internationally known prima donnas took the stage at the Tabor Grand Opera House. Henry Miles's authoritative study also includes a look at music education, the people who shaped the musical landscape of Denver, and music reviewers whose words of praise or blame accompanied practically every performance. { 308pp, 215x280mm, September 2006; PB, £19.99, 0942576497:9780942576498 , University Press of Colorado (Colorado Historical Society) }
SEQUENCES OF NIDAROS : A Nordic Repertory & Its European Context [Lori Kruckenberg & Andreas Haug (eds)] The sequence was one of the most important types of music of the Middle Ages. Performed during the mass and sung throughout the churches of medieval Europe, the Latin poetry of this new compositional genre distinguished itself from what is commonly called 'Gregorian chant'. The sequences of the medieval Cathedral of Nidaros and its vast archdiocese comprise a song repertoire remarkable for its sheer size, chronological comprehensiveness, and stylistic diversity. The current volume presents eleven studies on this musical tradition, and the authors, using a wide range of perspectives and approaches -- paleographical, codicological, repertorial, textual, musical, and exegetical -- place this Nordic practice in its broader European context. This book is more than a study of a regional tradition of a single genre: it instead touches on topics and methodologies fundamental to contemporary research on chant. { 422pp, 180x260mm, October 2006; PB, £29.50, 8251921058:9788251921053 , Tapir Academic Press }
TEACHING BRASS : 2nd Edition [Kristian Steenstrup] "Teaching Brass" thoroughly looks at the different aspects of teaching brass players. First and foremost, the book is written for brass teachers, who wish to get a greater insight into the scientific foundation of brass educational theory and practice -- an area in which it has previously been difficult to obtain relevant specialist literature. { 150pp, 150x240mm, December 2007; PB, £26.50, 8798839330:9788798839330 , Royal Academy of Music }
TRAGIC MANHOOD & DEMOCRACY : Verdi's Voice & the Powers of Musical Art [David A J Richards] What is tragedy? This work argues that it is, at once, art and science -- an absorbing art and precisely observed empirical inquiry into human psychology, whose subject matter is the dilemma of manhood under democracy. The author expands discussion of the idea of the tragic to include music drama in general and the operas of Verdi in particular, and explores the indispensable contribution of tragedy to an understanding of personal and political psychology through discussion of: the political theory of structural injustice resting on the suppression of voice (underlying evils like racism, sexism, and homophobia), a developmental psychology of gender (drawing on the work of Carol Gilligan -- the Harvard Project on Women's Psychology, Boy's Development and the Culture of Manhood), and an interpretation of tragic art (including the expressive role of music in it). Exploration of the tragic impact of patriarchy on democratic voice is at the heart of the power and appeal of Verdi's innovations in musical voice. At its core is a complex psychic geography of patriarchal practices imposed on personal and political relationships (parents to children, siblings to one another, and adult men and women). Such practices -- fundamental to the family, politics, and religion -- enforce demands by forms of physical and psychological violence directed by men and women at anyone who deviates from its demands. Verdi's tragic musical drama speaks of an emotional loss that literally cannot under patriarchy be spoken, namely, what the author calls the tragedy of patriarchy -- a divided psychology that lives in the tension between patriarchal practices and democratic principles, and between the psychological demands of patriarchy and democratic manhood. REVIEW: "This brilliant, original book illuminates how the reigning conception of manhood ineluctably leads to tragedy. In Verdi's operas, Richards finds a parallel to Greek tragedy - a musical art, honed at a moment of historical transition, that reveals the irreconcilable antagonism between patriarchy and democracy. He explains why Verdi's operas move us so powerfully, and shows us how Verdi's music dramas give expression to a voice that is psychologically and politically vital. This is creative scholarship at its best, a book written at a place where disciplines intersect. Illustrating how Verdi's operas illuminate tragic breaks in human relationships, the author also shows how a personal and political psychology elucidates Verdi's genius. For opera lovers, this book is a gift; to novices it extends an invitation to discover in music drama a way of ‘hearing the underworld' and thus coming to understand emotions and experiences that we resist knowing." -- University Professor, New York University, and author of In a Different Voice and The Birth of Pleasure { 210pp, 155x230mm, October 2004; HB, £45.00, 1845190416:9781845190415 / PB, £16.95, 1845190424:9781845190422 , Sussex Academic Press }
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART : January, 27 1756 -- 5 December 5, 1791 [Gloria Kaiser] The world is familiar with Mozart the composer, but in his private life he lived a variety of other roles: husband, father, son, and cousin, among others. The intent of Gloria Kaiser's edited and adapted collection of excerpts from his personal correspondence is to present an intimate creative revelation of Mozart the man from perspectives other than the one from which he is commonly viewed. Within that representation of a great, yet tragic existence, the famous composer emerges as a human being whose emotions and experiences are not far removed from our own. { 102pp, 140x215mm, August 2007; PB, £8.99, 1572411597:9781572411593 , Ariadne Press }
