ABORIGINAL PEOPLE & THEIR PLANTS
[Philip A Clarke]
This book will provide an overview of indigenous relationships to plants in Aboriginal Australia. The impetus for the book is largely drawn from the establishment of the new permanent Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery at the South Australian Museum, which presently receives over 700,000 visitors per year. The book contains themes that the author has been researching for twenty years. The book is unique, spanning the gap between botany and indigenous studies. It differs from other 'bushtucker' overviews by treating the study of plants as a window upon which to delve into Aboriginal culture. There are four main sections. Part 1 gives insights into Aboriginal culture through looking at the roles of plants in language, ritual and religion. Part 2 demonstrates how Aboriginal people were actively involved in managing their environment. Part 3 focuses upon the importance of particular species of plant to make food, drink, medicine, narcotics and tools. Part 4 looks at the future of Aboriginal plant use.

ACTING IN HOPE
: African Churches & HIV / AIDS II
[Ezra Chitando]
In this book, Ezra Chitando calls upon African churches to train their voices in speaking out and challenging systems of oppression so that AIDS competent churches work towards the transformation of death-dealing practices while strengthening life-enhancing ones. He argues that the response of African churches to the HIV epidemic will be determined by the quality of their theological education and the ability of the current generation of Africans to question the culture it inherited, amongst other contextual issues. Chitando insists that not only must churches with quick feet, long arms, warm hearts and loud voices necessarily have sharp minds but that a critical analysis o African cultural beliefs and practices must occur. This openness to new idea and modes of thinking means that that African traditionalists, Africa Christians, African Muslims, followers of other religions and ideologies an secularists all need to engage in an open re-evaluation of African cultures in the context of HIV. Chitando courageously demands that the contemporary generation has the mandate to actively critique what the previous generation bequeathed to it by deciding whether or not to uphold, transform or reject previously held beliefs and practices. This is the second of two books dealing with the response of African Churches to the HIV/AID epidemic.

ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR RESEARCH ADVANCES
[Earl B Darlon (ed)]
Developmentally, puberty is accompanied by major physical and emotional changes that alter a young person’s relationships and patterns of interaction with others. The transition into adolescence begins the move toward independence from parents and the need to establish one’s own values, personal and sexual identity, and the skills and competencies needed to compete in adult society. Independence requires young people to renegotiate family rules and degree of supervision by parents, a process that can generate conflict and withdrawal from parents. At the same time, social networks expand, and relationships with peers and adults in new social contexts equal or exceed in importance the relationships with parents. The criteria for success and acceptance among peers and adults change. Adapting to all of these changes in relationships, social contexts, status, and performance criteria can generate great stress, feelings of rejection, and anger at perceived or real failure. Young people may be attracted to violent behavior as a way of asserting their independence of the adult world and its rules, as a way of gaining the attention and respect of peers, as a way of compensating for limited personal competencies, or as a response to restricted opportunities for success at school or in the community. Good relationships with parents during childhood will help in a successful transition to adolescence, but they do not guarantee it. This book examines crucial issues in the field.

ADOPTION HANDBOOK
: Stress During the Adoption Period
[Geeri Bakker]
Each adoption is a unique event for the people who are personally involved, or for those who feel connected to the parents-to-be. The adoption period takes you to a new world and can wear you down emotionally if you are not prepared for what can be expected. It is not the regular pregnancy with which some people like to compare it. It is a pregnancy between cold bureaucracy on one side and the daily feelings of vulnerable tenderness on the other. Many books have been written about the ins and outs of pregnancies but there was never a book to prepare oneself for that very special time we call adoption. Geeri Bakker takes you there with her positive attitude and her sense of humor. She takes you along the unpredictable, uncomfortable and sometimes seemingly endless path that is the adoption procedure. THE ADOPTION HANDBOOK teaches adoptive parents-to-be how to face stress in its many appearances during the sometimes dark and winding road that leads to their adoptive child. To illustrate the book, Geeri Bakker shares her own story of the procedures that she and her husband endured when adopting their two children. It is not the (Dutch) procedure that makes this story so touching and at times breathtaking. It is the way that stress burrows into hearts that desperately wish to adopt a child; something that anyone going through an adoption procedure will recognize. THE ADOPTION HANDBOOK helps adoptive parents acknowledge their feelings of stress during their long-term 'pregnancy' and deal with them: facing the main goal, and feeling energetically able, both physically and mentally, to 'conceive' their child when the time is right. It is only normal that pregnant couples gather information to prepare themselves. So now it is time that adoptive parents prepare themselves, as well. For the well-being of this special child, given to you to have, hold, love, cherish, and to let it grow and grow up in your family.

BEYOND RESISTANCE
: The Future of Freedom
[Robert Fletcher (ed)]
This thought-provoking book is divided into two parts, each of which contains four chapters. In Part I, titled "Rethinking Resistance", contributors assert that "resistance" continues to hold utility as both an analytic concept and mode of action in the world, and therefore demands renewed engagement. Part II contains essays that offer novel frames for addressing progressive social change that might serve to replace "resistance" entirely, and thus is entitled "Thinking Beyond".

CANADA'S ECONOMIC APARTHEID
: The Social Exclusion of Racialized Groups in the New Century
[Grace-Edward Galabuzi]
This book draws attention to the growing racialisation of the gap between rich and poor. Despite the dire implications for Canadian society, the rift is increasing with minimal public and political attention. The myths about the economic performance of Canada's racialised communities that are used to deflect public concern and to mask the growing social crisis are challenged in this relevant work. Dr Galabuzi points to the role of historical patterns of systematic racial discrimination as essential in understanding the persistent over-representation of racialised groups in low-paying occupations. While Canada embraces globalisation and romanticises cultural diversity, there are persistent expressions of xenophobia and racial marginalisation that suggest a continuing political and cultural attachment to the concept of a White, settled society.

CAREER COUNSELLING AND GUIDANCE IN THE WORKPLACE
: A Manual for Career Practioners
[M Coetzee & H Roythorne-Jacobs]
The average 21st-century career is one of constant change: an individual can no longer expect to remain with one organisation his or her entire life, achieving managerial status through natural progression. Today's job market requires constant re-training and adjustment because of skills obsolescence, age discrimination and technological illiteracy. On the other hand, younger or less qualified workers find it difficult to enter the labour market because of a lack of skills or experience. Career counsellors should be able to help clients to navigate this difficult and changing role. The book offers a practical framework within which the career counsellor can work. The text explains the role of the career counsellor within the organisation; discusses the key concepts that influence career behaviour; explains the use of counselling and guidance tools and techniques; offers insight into the profession and practice of career counselling; and provides guidance within an international and a South African context. Integrating theoretical and practical perspectives, this book offers a comprehensive overview of career counselling and guidance services, practices, tools and techniques in an organisational context. It consists of five chapters, each of which has a summary, key terms and review an discussion questions.

CAUTIOUS SILENCE
: The Politics of Australian Anthropology
[Geoffrey Gray]
This is the first exploration of modern Australian social anthropology which examines the forces that helped shaped its formation. In his new work, Geoffrey Gray reveals the struggle to establish and consolidate anthropology in Australia as an academic discipline. He argues that to do so, anthropologists had to demonstrate that their discipline was the predominant interpreter of Indigenous life. Thus they were able, and called on, to assist government in the control, development and advancement of Indigenous peoples. Gray aims to help us understand the present organisational structures, and assist in the formulation of anthropology's future role in Australia; to provide a wider political and social context for Australian social anthropology, and to consider the importance of anthropology as a past definer of Indigenous people. Gray's work complements and adds to earlier publications: Wolfe's Settler Colonialism and the Transformation of Anthropology, McGregor's Imagined Destinies and Anderson's Cultivating Whiteness.

CHILD ABUSE
: New Research
[Stanley M Sturt (ed)]
Child abuse and neglect is as, at a minimum any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm. Four major types of maltreatment are usually included: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Although any of the forms of child maltreatment may be found separately, they often occur in combination. This book presents issues and research in this field.

CHILD POVERTY & THE CANADIAN WELFARE STATE
: From Entitlement to Charity
[Shereen Ismael]
Child hunger and homelessness -- once considered either sorrowful reflections of an economically impoverished society or shameful reflections of a morally impoverished state -- have become commonplace. The increasing scope of child poverty in Canada has been high on the national agenda since at least 1989 when Ed Broadbent, leader of the New Democratic Party, proposed a resolution in the House of Commons to eliminate child poverty by 2000. The resolution passed unanimously and sparked the formation of Campaign 2000, a broad national co-alition of non-governmental agencies committed to monitoring the government’s progress toward that goal. More than a decade later, the September 2001 issue of Maclean’s remarked: "Here we are in 2001... and child poverty in Canada is worse, not better." This book represents an effort to understand the changes in social policy that normalise the existence of child poverty in a rich society like Canada.

CHILDREARING & INFANT CARE ISSUES
: A Cross-Cultural Perspective
[Pranee Liamputtong (ed)]
Child-rearing practices in every society occur in accordance with the cultural norms of the society. In most societies, however, child-rearing practices share a common value: the preservation of life and maintenance of the health and well-being of a new-born infant. In this volume, the authors bring together salient issues regarding cultural beliefs and practices and social issues regarding infant care and child-rearing and infant feeding practices as well as early motherhood in different societies. They show that traditional practices surrounding infant care and child-rearing continue to live despite the fact that many societies have been modernised.

CLAIMING SPACE
: Racialization in Canadian Cities
[Cheryl Teeluckshingh (ed)]
Critically examines the various ways in which Canadian cities continue to be racialised despite objective evidence of racial diversity and the dominant ideology of multiculturalism. Contributors consider how spatial conditions in Canadian cities are simultaneously part of, and influenced by, racial domination and racial resistance. Reflecting on the ways in which race is systematically hidden within the workings of Canadian cities, the book also explores the ways in which racialised people attempt to claim space. These essays cover a diverse range of Canadian urban spaces and various racial groups, as well as the intersection of ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Linking themes include issues related to subjectivity and space; the importance of new space that arises by challenging the dominant ideology of multiculturalism; and the relationship between diasporic identities and claims to space.

COCAINE & HEROIN ABUSE RESEARCH
[Lidia A Pizzoli (ed)]
Addiction does begin with drug abuse when an individual makes a conscious choice to use drugs, but addiction is not just "a lot of drug use". Recent scientific research provides overwhelming evidence that not only do drugs interfere with normal brain functioning creating powerful feelings of pleasure, but they also have long-term effects on brain metabolism and activity. At some point, changes occur in the brain that can turn drug abuse into addiction, a chronic, relapsing illness. Those addicted to drugs suffer from a compulsive drug craving and usage and cannot quit by themselves. Treatment is necessary to end this compulsive behaviour. This book includes within its scope leading-edge research on cocaine and heroin abuse.

COLONIAL DISCOURSES
: Niupepa Maori, 1855-1863
[Lachy Paterson]
This book illuminates the whole colonial discourse between Maori and Pakeha as it appeared in the Maori-language newspapers during a critical period in New Zealand history. In 1855, the Maori world was changing. Many Maori took part in the market economy, most had become Christian, many could read and write, some had sold land to the settler government. The government expected these trends to continue. Ultimately, Maori and European would become the iwi kotahi -- one people. The government disseminated this message to Maori in its newspaper 'Te Karere Maori'. There were other newspapers, most importantly the rival Maori government the Kingitanga's Te Hokioi. And while these newspapers were used for propaganda, they provided a forum, with many Maori and some Pakeha debating the issues of the day.

COLONIAL DIVIDE IN PERUVIAN NARRATIVE
: Social Conflict & Transculturation
[Misha Kokotovic]
Peru is a nation built on the still extant colonial divide between indigenous peoples and the descendants of their Spanish conquerors, a divide that finds expression in the short stories, novels, and essays by renowned Peruvian writers such as José María Arguedas and Mario Vargas Llosa. The Colonial Divide in Peruvian Narrative explores debates over Peru's modernisation and cultural identity in post-1940 literature, exploring how Arguedas, Vargas Llosa, and others confronted challenges of language, style, and narrative form in their attempt to write across their nation's cultural divisions. It examines how modernisation affected the relationship between Peru's white elite and its indigenous majority, how historical change stimulated the emergence of new narrative techniques, and how these in turn made possible an understanding of the historical contexts in which they arose. Though Peru is its principal focus, the text engages with current studies of modernity at the postcolonial margins of the Western world by contributing to an understanding of the class and ethnic conflicts generated by rapid modernisation in culturally heterogeneous nations. The Colonial Divide will add to the growing body of critical literature on the ways in which modernity in formerly colonised nations such as Peru is inflected by the enduring legacies of colonialism.
REVIEW: "Kokotovic has provided a comprehensive review of contemporary Peruvian literature -- a remarkable analysis and discussion of literary theories in the field of Latin American studies and beyond. The theoretical discussions he pursues will allow his readers a better understanding of how intellectuals and cultural subjects perform within and outside academic institutions." -- Professor Guido Podestá, Department of Spanish and Portuguese; and Director, Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS), University of Wisconsin-Madison. "The Colonial Divide in Peruvian Narrative strikes me as potentially the most concise and yet also the most clarifying, forthright and plainspoken study of modern Peruvian fiction in English... Kokotovic has clearly mastered the critical literature he seeks to reform. By valuing coherence over novelty, he has written an intellectually satisfying, useful and informative piece of literary history and criticism." -- Neil Larsen, Professor of Comparative Literature and Critical Theory, University of California, Davis.

COMING CONVERGENCE
: The Surprising Ways Diverse Technologies Interact to Shape Our World & Change the Future
[Stanley Schmidt]
Imagine direct communication links between the human brain and machines, or tailored materials capable of adapting by themselves to changing environmental conditions, or computer chips and environmental sensors embedded into everyday clothing, or medical technologies that eliminate currently untreatable conditions such as blindness and paralysis. Now imagine all of these developments occurring at the same time. The stuff of science fiction? Not So. These are actually the reasonable predictions of scientists attempting to forecast a few decades into the future based on the rapid pace of innovation. Author Stanley Schmidt-a physicist, a writer, and the editor of Analog: Science Fiction and Fact -- explores these and many more amazing yet probable scenarios in this fascinating guide to the near future. He shows how past convergences have led to today's world, then considers tomorrow's main currents in biotechnology, cognitive science, information technology, and nanotechnology. Looking even further downstream he foresees both exciting and potentially dangerous developments: Longer, healthier lives; Cheap, generally available food, energy, and technology; Reduced pollution and environmental stress; Economic disruption during transitional periods; Excessive power in too few hands; Increased vulnerability from over-dependence on technology. Schmidt notes that even a routine technology such as the CAT scan is the result of three wholly separate innovations started many decades ago which recently converged: the X-ray, the computer, and advances in medicine. On a more ominous note, he also observes that the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was made possible by the malicious convergence of two separate trends in modern engineering and technology: the concentration of people in high rises within cities and the success of the passenger airline industry. The message is clear: the choices we make now will converge to create a near and distant future that will be almost unbelievably wonderful or unimaginably catastrophic, or both. This knowledgeable, fascinating glimpse into the future is a must read for everyone interested in technology, upcoming innovations in business, science fiction, and the future.

COMMONER RITUAL & IDEOLOGY IN ANCIENT MESOAMERICA
[Nancy Gonlin & Jon C Lohse (eds)]
Were most commoners in ancient Mesoamerica poor? In a material sense, yes, probably so. Were they poor in their beliefs and culture? Certainly not, as "Commoner Ritual and Ideology in Ancient Mesoamerica" demonstrates. This volume explores the ritual life of Mesoamerica’s common citizens, inside and outside of the domestic sphere, from Formative through Postclassic periods. Building from the premise that ritual and ideological expression inhered at all levels of society in Mesoamerica, the contributors demonstrate that ideology did not emanate solely from exalted individuals and that commoner ritual expression was not limited to household contexts. Taking an empirical approach to this under-studied and under-theorised area, contributors use material evidence to discover how commoner status conditioned the expression of ideas and values. Revealing complex social hierarchies that varied across time and region, this volume offers theoretical approaches to commoner ideology, religious practice, and socio-political organisation and builds a framework for future study of the correlation of ritual and ideological expression with social position for Mesoamericanists and archaeologists worldwide.

CONVINCING GROUND
: Learning to Fall in Love with Your Country
[Bruce Pascoe]
"Convincing Ground" pulses with love of country. In this powerful, lyrical and passionate new work Bruce Pascoe asks us to fully acknowledge our past and the way those actions continue to influence our nation today, both physically and intellectually. The book resonates with ongoing debates about identity, dispossession, memory and community. Pascoe draws on the past through a critical examination of major historical works and witness accounts and finds uncanny parallels between the techniques and language used there to today's national political stage. He has written the book for all Australians, as an antidote to the great Australian inability to deal respectfully with the nation's constructed Indigenous past. For Pascoe, the Australian character was not forged at Gallipoli, Eureka and the back of Bourke, but in the furnace of Murdering Flat, Convincing Ground and Werribee. He knows we can't reverse the past, but believes we can bring in our soul from the fog of delusion. Pascoe proposes a way forward, beyond shady intellectual argument and immature nationalism, with our strengths enhanced and our weaknesses acknowledged and addressed.

CRUEL BUT NOT UNUSUAL
: Violence in Canadian Families
[Ramona Alaggia & Cathy Vine (ed)]
Violence in families and intimate relationships affects a significant proportion of the population -- from very young children to the elderly. Although no one is immune to violence, some groups are particularly vulnerable. This is the first book to offer a national survey of the latest research and practice, and it reflects on the patriarchal roots and societal conditions in Canada that have led to the long-standing abuse of women and children. While feminist theories provide an overarching framework, a broad range of approaches is offered to examine and respond to critical aspects of this serious social problem. Topics include: systemic oppression of Aboriginal families and communities; violence in a francophone minority context; child corporal punishment; abuse in the lives of people with disabilities; the objectification of older adults; mother blaming; intimate violence in same-sex relationships; and new approaches to solving the problem of violence in Canadian families.

CULTURE & CHANGE IN CENTRAL EUROPEAN PREHISTORY
: 6th to 1st millennium BC
[Helle Vandkilde]
This book is a cohesive overview of Central European prehistory from the introduction of agriculture around 6000 BC to the state-forming processes that began to emerge during the first millennium BC. A complex mosaic of culture, society and processes is mirrored in the material world and in certain periods involves a large part of the Eurasian continent. Culture and change must be understood as both localised and macro-regional: the book is a cultural-historical tale -- inspired by, for example, the attempts of French historians to integrate different levels of history. Emphasis is laid on the eventful boom periods where innovations and cross-cultural interaction intensified in such a way that history's mainly reproductive pattern was broken. Important turning points are attached, among other things, to the first production of food, copper- and bronze metallurgy, and the sword as a weapon and symbol. These technical innovations were part of a complicated interaction with social and cultural processes, which in many cases are connected in a pattern that can be followed in time and space.

DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE UNITED STATES
[Samuel L Shapner (ed)]
The United States, the third most populous country globally, accounts for about 4.6% of the world’s population. Within the next few years, the U.S. population, currently estimated at 299 million persons, is expected to reach twice its 1950 level of 152 million. More than just being double in size, the population has become qualitatively different from what it was. As noted by the Population Reference Bureau, "The U.S. is getting bigger, older, and more diverse." The objective of this book is to highlight some of the demographic changes that have already occurred and to illustrate how these and future trends will reshape the nation in decades to come.

DESIRE FOR DEVELOPMENT
: Whiteness, Gender, & the Helping Imperative
[Barbara Heron]
Heron draws on post-structuralist notions of subjectivity, critical race and space theory, feminism, colonial and postcolonial studies, and travel writing to trace colonial continuities in the post-development recollections of white Canadian women who have worked in Africa. Following the narrative arc of the development worker story from the decision to go overseas, through the experiences abroad, the return home, and final reflections, the book interweaves theory with the words of the participants. She posits that the desire for development is about the making of self in terms that are highly raced, classed, and gendered. The construction of white female subjectivity is thereby revealed as contingent on notions of goodness and Othering, played out against, and constituted by, the backdrop of the North-South binary, in which Canada’s national narrative situates us as the 'good guys' of the world.

DISABILITY
: The Social, Political, & Ethical Debate
[Robert M Baird (ed)]
What is it like to experience disability? What are the prevailing cultural attitudes toward those who experience disability? How do social norms and public policies affect those experiencing disability? This book provides a vivid and concrete introduction to the wealth of social, political, and ethical debates that surround the disabled. Beginning with an exploration of the perspective of persons with disabilities, the essays demonstrate the extent to which the disability experience is affected by social and cultural values, attitudes, and policies. In addition to these first-person reflections, there are essays relating to such issues as: The disability rights movement; Disability studies; Social policy relating to disability; Physician-assisted suicide; genetic testing; selective abortion; the moral status of handicapped new-borns; living and dying with dignity. Written in an engaging style with a focus on the concrete, this collection of essays includes contributions by John Hockenberry, Charles Krauthammer, Peter Singer, and others. It is a marvellous resource for enabling the reader to comprehend the experience of disability and to explore contemporary issues involving the disability community.

DISABILITY FROM A HUMANISTIC PERSPECTIVE
: Towards a Better Quality of Life
[Shunit Reiter]
The objective of this book is to advance awareness and sensitivity towards the special social and personal needs of people with all kinds of disabilities, of all ages, from infancy to adulthood. It proposes a theoretical background for understanding the situation of people with disabilities. It also introduces an innovative, practical work method, i.e., the CIL which helps this population cope with the social and personal hardships it faces. This book is intended to serve as a tool for anyone engaged in promoting the welfare of people with disabilities. In summary: the book is based on theory and research, including the experience of practical application. It discusses the implications of the theory for universal practice and draws on real-work examples and practices to illustrate points. Since weathered crust elution -- deposited rare earth ore was discovered, the basic researches on the metallogeny mechanism, the prospecting rule and the production have been studied continuously for more than thirty years. The three leaching technologies of bath leaching with sodium chloride, bath leaching with ammonium sulphate and in-situ leaching with ammonium sulphate are developed sequentially. All of these contribute to the industry of the weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore. However, there was no systematic work on the weathered crust elution - deposited rare earth ore in the past due to many reasons such as the confidentiality, which was not beneficial for the development of this ore. The metallogeny theory and mining technologies of the weathered crust elution - deposited rare earth ore are introduced systematically in this book for readers.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & ITS REVERBERATION
[Mordecai Lipshitz (ed)]
Domestic violence is control by one partner over another in a dating, marital or live-in relationship. The means of control include physical, sexual, emotional and economic abuse, threats and isolation. Survivors face many obstacles in trying to end the abuse in their lives. These obstacles include psychological and economic entrapment, physical isolation and lack of social support, challenges to religious and cultural values, fear of social judgement, threats and intimidation over custody or separation, immigration status or disabilities and lack of viable alternatives. Despite the vastness and power of these challenges most are able to overcome them because of increased public, legal and health care awareness and improved community resources that enable survivors to rebuild their lives. Domestic violence occurs in every culture, country and age group. It affects people from all socio-economic, educational and religious backgrounds and takes place in same sex as well as heterosexual relationships. Women with fewer resources or greater perceived vulnerability -- girls and those experiencing physical or psychiatric disabilities or living below the poverty line -- are at even greater risk for domestic violence and lifetime abuse. Children are also affected by domestic violence, even if they do not witness it directly. The book examines crucial issues in the field.

DOMINION OF YOUTH
: Adolescence & the Making of a Modern Canada, 1920 to 1950
[Cynthia Comacchio]
This book captures what it meant for young Canadians to inhabit this liminal stage of life within the context of a young nation caught up in the self-formation and historic transformation that would make modern Canada. Because the young at this time were seen paradoxically as both the hope of the nation and the source of its possible degeneration, new policies and institutions were developed to deal with the 'problem of youth'. This history considers how young Canadians made the transition to adulthood during a period that was 'developmental' -- both for youth and for a nation also working toward individuation. During the years considered here, those who occupied this 'dominion' of youth would see their experiences more clearly demarcated by generation and culture than ever before. With this book, Cynthia Comacchio offers the first detailed study of adolescence in early-twentieth-century Canada and demonstrates how young Canadians of the period became the nation's first modern teenagers.

DRUG & ALCOHOL ABUSE RESEARCH FOCUS
[Terri A Walcott (ed)]
People have been using substances to lift their spirits for millennia. Techniques for fermenting beer and related tipples are known from Egypt and Sumeria 4000 years ago, and they soon spread across the inhabited world. Coca leaves (the source of cocaine), tobacco, and caffeine were also popular with ancient cultures. Humans may have an evolutionary pre-disposition to seek out narcotics, even though they can be addictive and damaging. Some people may have genes which make them more genetically prone to drug addiction than others. This book includes research on drug taking, examining both legal highs, such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine, and illegal stimulants, such as marijuana, LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines, heroin and magic mushrooms and the so-called date-rape drugs rohypnol and GHB.

EDUCATION FOR THE END OF POVERTY
: Implementing all the Millennium Development Goals
[Matthew Clarke & Simon Feeny (eds)]
This book provides important information regarding the Millennium Development Goals, adopted unanimously by the United Nations in 2000, setting explicit targets in terms of achieving progress in the developing world. This volume provides both a theoretical overview of the role of education in development and also illustrates this with various case studies (based on work of non-government organisations and other donors) in the Asia-Pacific region. The authors include a mix of development practitioners as well as academics engaged in research in this field. Thus, the theory is illustrated and extrapolated by case studies focussing on community development interventions.

ELDERCARE 911
[Susan Beerman]
The intricacies of elder caregiving duties and responsibilities can be overwhelming, especially because adult children of ageing parents do not know the ins and outs of the medical and social service systems, let alone how to cope with the emotional burdens of providing care for their ailing parents. They desperately wish for a single resource that answers their questions with "how to" information that restores their feelings of competence and control. "Eldercare 911" is that resource. With the steady growth of the elderly population, it is estimated that approximately one-third of Americans will be providing care for an elderly person in the near future. This well-researched, compassionate, and comprehensive handbook will empower caregivers to be the best they can be without neglecting their own very legitimate needs. The authors use excerpts from a compilation of caregiver interviews to demonstrate the most common problems in eldercare. "Eldercare 911" is organised into easily accessible sections and subsections: 20 chapters divided into 131 topics and then into another 77 subtopics, making it simple for readers to find exactly what they are looking for. The authors give full consideration to the time limitations and career needs of working caregivers, and the special challenges faced by women with teenage children, spouses, or significant others who may not always be sensitive to the caregiver's balancing act. Among the topics discussed are knowing when elderly people need help; how to intervene; finding and using support systems; handling burnout; managing medical, insurance, and benefits issues; overseeing medications; coping with Alzheimer's Disease and other serious illnesses; how to decide when hospitalisation is necessary; detecting and dealing with abuse; working with eldercare professionals; setting up home care; making decisions and arrangements for alternate housing. The authors also examine rarely discussed, sensitive issues that affect family communication and relationships like parents, sexual behaviour, dating and remarriage, and death and dying.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SOCIAL AWAKENING, 3 VOLUME SET
[A M Bagulia]
Awakening the people to help themselves is Social Awakening. Social Awakening has always been a ubiquitous part of the histories-in-making. From the beginning of the human history man has been showing his innate quest to be equalled with the people around him. The Social Renaissance and subsequently the Reformation had been phenomenon or concept of the 16th Century Europe. The epoch-making, slogan of 'Liberty, Equality and Fraternity' was coined during the French Revolution, two centuries ago, which brought about wide-sweeping social changes and its repercussions the world over. The self-respect of Indians, their sense of belonging and reluctant social awakening snowballed into the First War of Independence in 1857. It is heartening to find that social awakening, by now, has started percolating to the hitherto downtrodden stratum of our society. Almost all sections of the society recognise the rights and duties developed upon them. Although a feudal-like environment is prevalent in several parts of our country, it is, presently, on its way out or at its terminal decline. Our independence itself was the product of a revolutionary social awakening in a highly resolved and determined Indian Society. Nothing can be brought out, all of sudden. Social change can be resulted in through evolutionary and gradual purification process of a society. This "Encyclopedia of Social Awakening" comprises three volumes, covering all dimensions of the subject and other related matters. Before this work came to its present shape, the development process of all the strata of the society was scrutinised and thoroughly studied. Thus, evidently this work will be something unprecedented, content wise.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SOCIAL ORGANISATION, 3-VOLUME SET
[Shezad Ahmed]
Social organisation, the structural formation and set-up of every society is its foremost crusader against any social injustice in whatever hue. Man being a social being has always been and will always be part of social organisations. History of social organisation dates back to the very beginning of human history, and right from prehistoric times, it is seen and observed that a strong and united social organisation can singly and effectively achieve what the single and disunited cannot. Social grouping helped man to take on his common enemies like wild animals and people from other tribes or Gothras. Thus, Social organisations have been successful in eliminating the sense of insecurity or fear among any group or individual, as almost everybody in our society is a part of social organisation or group. Accessibility to justice and highest power centres once the purview of the privileged; the affluent and politicians are thus now available to the common man in society. This encyclopedia, in three volumes covering all aspects of social organisations and related topics makes authentic and interesting reading for all classes.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SOCIAL WELFARE, 4-VOLUME SET
[Anil Saxena]
Welfare of the people, the country or the state which a government controls heads the priority list of things of any government in the world. There are umpteen organisations -- governmental and non-governmental -- in our society to safeguard the different sections in our society yet many aspects need to be taken into consideration before one can even dram of an ideal state. Although India is a rapidly growing economy, the income disparity prevalent amongst the people and our poor Human Development Index clearly indicate that much need to be done in the area of social welfare. Poor literacy rate, ever present and increasing infant mortality rate and sex ratio in several sates present a dismal picture of the steps taken for the welfare of the masses. Provision of quality primary education to children transgressing castist, regional, gender and religious bias and provision of security to women who are now taking up employment in different occupations at par with men will be a positive initial step in this direction. These four volumes virtually cover all aspects of the subject and have been prepared after intensive research and thorough analysis of the subject. A must read for all related to this field.

ETHNOLOGIA EUROPAEA
: Journal of European Ethnology: Volume 38:1 2008
[Orvar Löfgren & Regina Bendix (eds)]
What is Europe? Where is Europe? And what is Europe in the discipline of European ethnology? This issue of Ethnologic Europaea celebrates the journal's 40th birthday by looking at future paths for research on Europe. For a long time the disciplines grouped under the label of European ethnology were mainly national ethnologies. The need for European com-parisons lived more in the Sunday rhetoric of the discipline than in actual research, but with a new interest in transnational processes the perspectives have widened. The processes of economic unification also gave rise to research on facets of a Euro-pean culture, conditioned, for instance, by the administrative implementation of European economic and, increasingly, cultural policies. Local, regional and national cultural dimen-sions do not vanish in this development, of course, and neither do borders and boundaries, physical and mental. Processes of EU integration as well as globalisation may both weaken and strengthen national and regional borders, as we have seen during the last decades, but such developments call for a rethinking of Europe as a research field and also a questioning of ideas about Europe or European cultural homogeneity. The EU rhetoric about unity hides a more complex picture, where European integration and disintegration emerges in often surprising settings and forms.

ETHNOLOGIA EUROPAEA
: Journal of European Ethnology: Volume 37:1-2 2007
[Orvar Löfgren & Regina Bendix]
A rapidly growing number of double homes connect different parts of Europe in new ways. The second home can be a cottage in the woods, an apartment in the Costa del Sol or a restored farm house in Tuscany. However, other forms of double homes must be added to these landscapes of leisure. There are long distance commuters who spend most of their week in an overnight flat, in a caravan on a dreary parking lot or at a construction site. Economic migrants dream of a house 'back home' for vacations or retirement. Dual homes come in all shapes and sizes -- from the caravans of touring circus artists to people turning sailboats into a different kind of domestic space. This special issue of "Ethnologic Europaea" captures some dimensions of lives that are anchored in two different homes. How are such lives organised in time and space in terms of identification, belonging and emotion? How do they, in very concrete terms, render material transnational lives? The next issue of the journal (2008:1) will take such a comparative perspective into another direction as the authors will consider different kinds of research strategies to achieve European comparisons and to gain new cultural perspectives on European societies and everyday life.

EVANGELICAL BALANCE SHEET
: Character, Family, & Business in Mid-Victorian Nova Scotia
[B Anne Wood]
Using the journals of W. Norman Rudolf (1835-1886), a Victorian merchant, "Evangelical Balance Sheet" explores the important role of character ideals and evangelicalism in mid-Victorian culture. Rudolf's diary, with its daily weather observations, its account of family matters, of social and business happenings, and of his own experiences, as well as occasional literary or naturalistic forays, attempts to follow a disciplined regime of writing, but also has elements of a Bildungsroman. The diary reveals an obvious and significant tension between his inner, spiritual search for meaning in his life (evangelical inwardness) and his outward stewardship duties. Rudolf's concept of character, then, involved a type of balance sheet of his evangelical service record, to his God, his family, his business, and his community. Needing God's help to transform his will and to interpret the world in a constructive, rational manner, the underlying intent of his daily journal writing was to keep his commitment to an ethic of benevolence and of the affirmation of the goodness of human beings. Wood elucidates the cultivation of civic-minded masculinity in the context of Victorian Maritime Canada, analysing the multiple facets of the character ideal and emphasising its important role in Victorians' understanding of their life experiences. In the process Wood reveals many underlying assumptions about social change and about civic discourse. The book also describes how the tremendous economic upheavals experienced by many entrepreneurs in the late 1860s to 1880s tempered their evangelical zeal and made it increasingly difficult for them to achieve a balanced and humane perspective on their own lives. The book will appeal to a broad audience interested in social history, imperial studies, gender studies (especially changing ideas of masculinity and manhood), Atlantic Canada studies, and local history of the Pictou region.

FLEXIBLE CHILDHOOD?
: Exploring Children's Welfare in Time & Space
[Helga, Zeiher, Dympna Devine, Anne Trine Kjørholt & Harriet Strandell]
Children's spaces are widening -- culturally and socially: socially their spaces are more often multilocal, and culturally they are enlarged through mobility in the globalised and virtual spaces in the mediatised world. Children's times are also less confined by strict borderlines; the more flexible and individualised use of time in the world of work impacts on children's lives in families, day care and school. The chapters of this volume each present particular temporal and spatial aspects of social change in childhood. The aim of the book goes even further: it is directed toward considering the impact of such change on children's welfare. As former boundaries between generations begin to blur and neo-liberal forces enter all realms of people's lives, it can no longer be taken for granted -- as it was in former periods of modernity -- that continued efforts to realize the childhood project will automatically guarantee the "best interest of the child". With respect to children's welfare in time and space, tensions between demands from the market economy, dynamics of rationalisation and technology, and visions of a "good" childhood are discussed in the book. Together with volume 1, "Childhood, Generational Order and the Welfare State", this book is the final result of COST Action A19, Children's Welfare, which has been supported by the European COST Framework.

FOCUS ON ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR RESEARCH
[Terry C Rhodes (ed)]
Young people may be attracted to violent behaviour as a way of asserting their independence of the adult world and its rules, as a way of gaining the attention and respect of peers, as a way of compensating for limited personal competencies, or as a response to restricted opportunities for success at school or in the community. Good relationships with parents during childhood will help in a successful transition to adolescence, but they do not guarantee it. This new book presents new research in the field.

FOCUS ON POVERTY
[Ralph V Brenos (ed)]
It has been said that the poor will always be with us. But that does not mean we are obliged to ignore squalor. Concern about poverty stretches across national borders, from the third world to the street corners of Manhattan; whether one believes the poor are victims of their own shortcomings or of poor public policy, the impoverished cannot be ignored. This book collects a set of essays exploring the unavoidable issue of poverty. A broad array of scholars present studies and opinions about where the poor come from and what we can do to help them including such questions as gender inequality and poverty, minimum wages and development and its impact on poverty.

GATHERING FOR GOD
: George Brown in Oceania
[Helen Bethea Gardner]
Combining 'the gathering of artefacts with the gathering of souls', George Brown was a key figure in the Christian, and especially the Wesleyan Methodist, history of nineteenth-century Oceania. Using his life as a case study, Helen Bethea Gardner examines the role of Christian missionaries in the Pacific Islands. Brown's career (1860-1908) spanned one of the most tumultuous political periods in the South Pacific, as one by one islands were colonised by imperial nations. He was one of the most politically engaged of all missionaries, encouraging colonial rule in the Pacific by America, Britain, Germany and, eventually, Australia and New Zealand. Originally from the north of England, he worked as a missionary in Samoa from 1860, moving to the Bismarck Archipelago (now Papua New Guinea) in 1875. From the 1880s until his retirement in 1907, he worked in Sydney as the general secretary of the Australasian Methodist Overseas Mission. 'Gathering for God' examines Brown's missionary letters, journals and journalism, exploring how he attracted Pacific Islanders to Christian teachings, analysing his leadership during an armed attack on New Britain villages accused of cannibalism, and looking at his work in the new discipline of anthropology. He was a major collector of artefacts (his collection is now in the Osaka Museum) and photographer of Pacific peoples (his collection is in the Australian Museum).

GENDER RELATIONS IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
: Essential Readings
[Nancy Cook (ed)]
This book is truly multidisciplinary. It is partially drawn from the work of sociologists, but articles written by gender scholars from the disciplines of Cultural studies, history, political science, geography, and literary theory, are also included. The readings examine historically persistent, cross-culturally relevant, and empirically grounded concerns such as men's position in the family and women's relationship to work, media and the global economy, as well as the gendered problems of violence, sexuality and reproduction, and racism.

GENDER, FOOD SECURITY & RURAL LIVELIHOODS
[Maithreyi Krishnaraj (ed)]
Food security remains a major concern in India as agriculture is in crisis. Food security depends not only on production and the market but also on the social and political structures which include gender within which markets are situated. Women have always been engaged in agriculture. And today the figure is close to 80 percent. Left with the responsibility of running farms because of male migration, women find work burdens have increased without growth in productivity. They lack rights to land. Technological change means that women lose their jobs like threshing rice or making rice products at home. They may get jobs in rice mills, but at low wages. They end up having less to eat when they never got enough anyway. So though agriculture has more women working, they are earning less, and there is less food security for them and their families. Malnutrition is common because when there is less food going around, women earn less so that men and children get more. In this changing context, the contributors explore women's roles in agriculture and the household, both areas where their contributions are unwaged, and discuss the interrelated concepts of gender, livelihood and food security.

HARD PASSAGE
: A Mennonite Family's Long Journey from Russia to Canada
[Arthur Kroeger]
In the 1920s, 20,000 Mennonites left the newly formed Soviet Union and emigrated to Canada. Among them were Heinrich and Helena Kroeger and their five children. After living for 120 years in the comfortable surroundings of a Russian Mennonite community, the Kroeger family experienced war, revolution, a typhus epidemic, and hyper-inflation in quick succession. In 1926, they left their homeland to settle in an arid region of Western Canada. Based on Heinrich's diaries and letters, "Hard Passage" speaks to the indomitable spirit of Mennonite immigrants to the Canadian West.

HEAD START IMPACT
[Michael Puma, Stephen Bell, Ronna Cook, Camilla Heid & Michael Lopez]
Since its beginning in 1965 as a part of the War on Poverty, Head Start’s goal has been to boost the school readiness of low-income children. Based on a 'whole child' model, the program provides comprehensive services that include pre-school education; medical, dental, and mental health care; nutrition services; and efforts to help parents foster their child’s development. Head Start services are designed to be responsive to each child’s and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. The Congressionally-mandated Head Start Impact Study was conducted across 84 nationally representative grantee/delegate agencies. Approximately 5,000 newly entering 3- and 4-year-old children applying for Head Start were randomly assigned to either a Head Start group that had access to Head Start program services or to a non- Head Start group that could enrol in available community non-Head Start services, selected by their parents. Data collection began in fall 2002 and is scheduled to continue through 2006, following children through the spring of their 1st-grade year. The study quantifies the impact of Head Start separately for 3- and 4-year-old children across child cognitive, social-emotional, and health domains as well as ii on parenting practices. This book is essential reading for those in the education field.

HELPING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
: The Bedouin-Arab Case
[Alean Al-Krenawi, Ben Gurion & John Graham]
This new and significant book deals with the helping professions in general and social work, in particular. It provides important insights into how helping professional intervention needs to be culturally situated through the unique time and person centred prisms of individual, community and place. As a case study, it focuses on the Bedouin-Arab peoples generally and in the Negev. Practices that are also new to helping professions are discussed in relation to cultural mediation conflict resolution and traditional healing.

HOW CHILDREN BECOME MORAL SELVES
: Building Character & Promoting Citizenship in Education
[Josephine Russell]
This book examines moral responsiveness and thinking in a mixed gender class of primary school children, and offers a theoretical perspective on children’s ability to think together about morality in a community of enquiry and on related issues of pedagogy. It tracks development in children’s moral awareness, looking at gains and losses from middle to late childhood, and focuses on cognitive skills, notions of moral rectitude, and interpersonal relationships and friendship. The study demonstrates how, through participation in a community of enquiry such as 'Thinking Time -- Philosophy with Children' (children sit in a circle, engaging in dialogue, with the teacher as facilitator), children become more thoughtful and develop respect and responsiveness as well as other traits of character that are central to democratic citizenship. The author analyses children’s thinking in response to a wide range of content, on issues of justice, freedom and responsibility, rights and duties, inclusiveness, and friendship. Gender differences are also examined. With the increasing emphasis on education for citizenship in the school curriculum comes an awareness that 'children’s voice' and 'agency' need to be respected and promoted. Social Personal and Health Education, Values Education, and Education for Citizenship are becoming more critical in an environment where there is a sense of crisis and concern about the fabric of democratic society. In presenting a new paradigm -- research with rather than on children, entering into their life-world which their teacher shares -- the author demonstrates the potential of children to reflect in a concerned way on issues that concern them and society as a whole.

IDEA OF PROSTITUTION
[Sheila Jeffreys]
There are (at least) two competing views on prostitution: Prostitution as a legitimate and acceptable form of employment, freely chosen by women and men's use of prostitution as a form of degrading the women and causing grave psychological damage. In "The Idea of Prostitution" Sheila Jeffreys explores these sharply contrasting views. She examines the changing concept of prostitution from White Slave Traffic of the nineteenth century to its present status as legal. The book includes discussion of the varieties of prostitution such as: the experience of male prostitutes; the uses of women in pornography; and the role of military brothels compared with slavery and rape in marriage. Sheila Jeffreys explodes the distinction between "forced" and "free" prostitution, and documents the expanding international traffic in women. The author examines the claims of the prostitutes' rights movement and the sex industry, while supporting prostituted women. Her argument is threefold: the sex of prostitution is not just sex; the work of prostitution is not ordinary work; and prostitution is a 'choice' not for the prostituted women, but for the men who abuse them.

IMMIGRATION CRISIS
: Issues, Policies & Consequences
[Paul W Hickman & Thomas P Curtis (eds)]
One of the hottest topics in America is the burning issue of immigration. On the one hand, immigration is what has kept America growing and prospering. On the other hand, the demographics are politically sensitive, the emotions high and sometimes mean-spirited, and some state government services in as bad shape as America's bridges. This book presents important issues on this nontrivial issue

INDIGENOUS EXPERIENCE
: Global Perspectives
[Roger C A Maaka & Chris Anderson]
No book to date has presented such a complete and diverse picture of the experiences of indigenous people around the globe. Maaka and Anderson attempt to introduce the reader to the heterogeneity and depth of indigenous groups' colonial experiences. Focused on the global context, 'The Indigenous Experience' takes examples from the North American nations of Canada and the United States; the Hispanic nations of Latin America; Australia; New Zealand; Hawaii and Rapanui from Oceania; from Northern Europe and the circumpolar region, Norway; and from the continent of Africa, an example from Nigeria. This book is also global in its authorship, with articles by leading scholars from areas that are reflected in the examples; Australia, Canada, the United States, and Norway.

INSIDE THE WELFARE LOBBY
: A History of the Australian Council of Social Services -- The Role of Interest Groups in Australian Social Policy
[Philip Mendes]
The first study to comprehensively examine the role played by ACOSS in the Australian social policy debate; The implications of Australian welfare state debates and agendas for other advanced welfare states. The Australian welfare lobby group -- the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) -- has played a central role in the welfare politics debate as the foremost defender of the Australian welfare state. ACOSS is widely recognised as one of the most important lobby groups in Australia, and enjoys regular access to the media and key policy makers in government and the bureaucracy. Relevant case studies and source material are used to draw attention to: The role that interest groups play in the formation of government policy agendas; The lobbying strategies used by welfare advocacy groups to influence welfare state outcomes; The relationship between the welfare sector and other key lobby groups and political parties; The impact of key contemporary influences such as neo-liberalism and economic globalisation which have arguably transformed the political context within which welfare advocacy groups operate.
REVIEW: "This book helps to fill an acute shortage in academic writing about the major interest groups that play such a large role in Australian policy-making and politics. ACOSS stands alongside the BCA, the ACTU, the NFF and other large peak organisations; without an understanding of ACOSS our knowledge of contemporary politics is incomplete. In particular, ACOSS’ role in welfare politics is central. Mendes has the best credentials of anyone I know to write such a book. His knowledge of ACOSS is up to date and detailed. This book will be a major resource for all university courses in contemporary Australian politics and a necessary guide for all informed political commentators." -- Professor of Politics, School of Social Sciences, Australian National University. "Philip Mendes offers us a study of how ACOSS has built and developed its messages along with its tactics in seeking to influence policy to tackle poverty. Politicians, organisations, and researchers will all find something of interest in this examination of the case of the ACOSS and its relation to the policy-making process." -- Dr Paul Dornan, Child Poverty Action Group

INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE PREVENTION & INTERVENTION
: The Risk Assessment & Management Approach
[Anna C Baldry & Frans W Winkel (eds)]
This book focuses on the importance of assessing risk in domestic violence cases to prevent and reduce its escalation into homicide (so called uxoricide). Spousal killers in a substantial number of cases exhibit a history of prior spousal violence: in addition to this, witnessing violence has debilitating effects on children. For this reason domestic violence is also becoming a hot political issue on the European agenda. Integrating the US and Canadian experiences with the European ones increases the book's value and broadens perspectives. Assessing the risk and adopting appropriate measures can help reduce the risk of escalation of violence. It aims at gathering contributions from experts in the field of domestic violence and victimisation to present state of the art research in the risk assessment of domestic violence cases.

JOURNEY INTO OTHERNESS
[Ada Savin (ed)]
Invites readers to an exploration of the complex, ever-changing relations between ethnic communities on the North American continent. Written by European and American scholars, the seventeen essays gathered in this volume focus on the complex dynamics of inter-ethnic and inter-racial contacts in American history, culture and literature. Rather than dwell on the traditional opposition mainstream versus minorities, the authors adopt a trans-ethnic, trans-national perspective, apt to shed new light on various forms of interaction between racial and ethnic groups in North America.

LANGUAGE & CULTURE IN ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA
[Michael Walsh & Colin Yallop (eds)]
What are the Australian Aboriginal languages like? How many are there? Where are they spoken? Are there dictionaries of Aboriginal languages? What kinds of new language have emerged in the last two hundred years? What is the connection between land, people and language in Aboriginal Australia? How does the use of English disadvantage Aboriginal people? This book offers answers these questions by providing a series of studies of aspects of language and culture in different parts of Aboriginal Australia. Chapters deal with subjects including why a young Aboriginal woman in rural Australia might end up pleading guilty to a crime she didn't commit; the picture of 'language ownership' which can be drawn from recent research on land rights; what we know of the first white settlers' attempts to learn the language of the Sydney region; the first dictionaries compiled in South Australia; and how Aboriginal languages are now being used in the media and education. Each study contributes to a composite Australia-wide picture of language and culture in Aboriginal Australia, accessible to anyone with an interest in the area. The book is of particular use to teachers and students involved in Aboriginal studies in the upper secondary years and at introductory levels in universities. Its value as an educational resource is enhanced by bibliographical reference, maps, and questions for further discussion at the end of each chapter.

LIFE & TIMES OF RICHARD CASTRO
: Bridging a Cultural Divide
[Richard Gould]
Hispanic leader Richard Castro was not above a good street fight. Denver police beat him bloody during a 1960s confrontation, and political rivals later shot him and bombed his home. But he emerged from the early struggles of Denver's Hispanic movement -- el Movimento -- to become one of Colorado's most important political figures. During his ten years as a state representative and, later, as a key ally of Denver mayor Federico Pena, Castro personified the Hispanic community's new-found political power. "The Life and Times of Richard Castro" traces Castro's path from the streets of Denver to the chambers of the State Capital. It also chronicles a community's coming of age -- an event that transformed politics and society in Colorado and the West.

LIVING WITH HOPE
: African Chuches & HIV/AIDS I
[Ezra Chitando]
Addressing the need for an in-depth understanding and analysis of how Churches in Africa are living with the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, Ezra Chitando's book insists that the church must accompany people and communities living with HIV and AIDS on their journeys of faith. He argues that the church in Africa must be one with friendly feet, which ministers to every need, thus repenting its negative attitudes as well as the stigma and discrimination surrounding the disease. As it works with and among those living with HIV, it must also interrogate its theology, its attitude to sexuality and its gender insensitivity and awaken to the realisation that it must become an all-embracing community. Chitando insists that a church with friendly feet does not pose questions about the moral standing of those with whom it is journeying. African churches need friendly feet to journey with individuals and communities living with HIV and AIDS, warm hearts to demonstrate compassion and anointed hands to effect healing. Reflecting on these themes, Living with Hope is the first of two books.

MEASURING EFFECTIVENESS IN HUMANITARIAN & DEVELOPMENT AID
: Conceptual Frameworks, Principles & Practice
[Andre M N Renzaho (ed)]
This book is structured in four sections. Section 1 looks at the issues related to theoretical and methodological considerations. Chapter 1 to 5 deal with gaps in measuring effectiveness of development aid programs including issues related to evaluability assessment, outcome mapping and sustainability (Chapter 1), perspective in measuring effectiveness (chapter 2), the application of narrative and dialogue methods in defining and redefining effectiveness (chapter 3), the role of economic modelling in measuring the impact and effectiveness of aid programs (chapter 4) and the outline of how the effectiveness of HIV prevention is currently being measured at a global level, and the requirements at local and national levels (chapter 5). Section two looks at principles and practice with some case studies. Chapter 6, selling humanitarian emergencies to the media, focuses on the relationship between journalists and aid workers and suggests practical strategies relief agencies can take to raise the media profile.

MORSELS IN THE MELTING POT
: The Persistence of Dutch Immigrant Communities in North America
[George Harinck & Hans Krabbendam (eds)]
The Dutch presence in North America has been best preserved in the two largest denominations, the Reformed Church and Christian Reformed Church. But outside these denominations seven more developed over time, of which some are hardly visible for outsiders, and also non-protestant groups tried to stay together. The eighteen essays in this volume describe the ways in which small groups of Dutch immigrants made efforts to maintain their identities in the United States and Canada between 1800 and 2000. Until now, many of those groups had never been objects of academic research. In the essays presented here, the Dutch, American, and Canadian authors zoom in on the connections of these groups with the Netherlands, with other Dutch-Americans, and other ethnic groups. All of them faced the issues of language and education.

MOVING TOWARD POSITIVE SYSTEMS OF CHILD & FAMILY WELFARE
: Current Issues & Future Directions
[Gary Cameron, Nick Coady & Gerald R Adams (eds)]
Faced with rapidly changing social and economic conditions, service professionals, policy developers, and researchers have raised significant concerns about the Canadian child welfare system. This book draws inspiration from experiences with three broad, international child welfare paradigms -- child protection, family service, and community healing/caring (First Nations) -- to look at how specific practices in other countries, as well as alternative experiments in Canada, might foster positive innovations in the Canadian child welfare approach. Foundational values and purposes, systems design and policy, and organisation and management are discussed, as are front-line service delivery, service provider work environments, and the realities of daily living for families. Informed by recent research, the contributors provide clear directions for policy, administration, and service-delivery reforms. Informing policy debates addressing child maltreatment and family welfare, this book will serve as a vital resource for managers, service providers, professionals, and students in the fields of social work, child and youth care, family studies, psychology, and special education.

NAVIGATING THE MINDFIELD
: A Guide to Separating Science from Pseudoscience in Mental Health
[Scott O Lilienfeld]
Can self-help recordings containing subliminal messages improve your self-esteem or memory? Is hypnotic age-regression therapy a valid way of rediscovering lost childhood memories? Does Thought Field Therapy effectively treat anxiety by manipulating energy fields? A dizzying array of popular psychology books, articles, and promotion campaigns tout these and other alleged remedies for psychological problems. So confusing is this welter of advice that those in need of counselling or treatment, and even many therapists, have difficulty sorting out reliable information from unproven hype. Faced with this confusion, consumers of mental health services need guidelines for finding effective therapy. This useful book brings together accessible, non-technical articles by leading scientific researchers and clinicians to help answer such critical questions concerning mental health care as: How should I select a therapist? How can I tell the difference between scientifically valid and questionable psychotherapy? Can I trust the diagnosis I have received? If you or someone you know is seeking therapy, this excellent reference book will provide needed guidance for navigating the mental health maze.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN CHILD ABUSE RESEARCH
[Stanley M Sturt (ed)]
Child abuse and neglect is as, at a minimum any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm. Four major types of maltreatment are usually included: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Although any of the forms of child maltreatment may be found separately, they often occur in combination. This book presents issues and research in this field.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON CHINA & AGING
[Jason L Powell & Ian Cook (eds)]
The first part of the book is entitled 'Family, Transition and Ageing' and addresses rapid social and economic changes in China through a kaleidoscope of differential perspectives that focus on how family continues to be an important reference point for the past, present and future institution in the care of older people. The second part of the book focuses on the tangible social forces associated with managing old age: 'Welfare, Consumption and Ageing'. This section is important in locating the structures and agents of power that are relevant to maintaining trust and social relations between older people, the Chinese State and its dualism of state welfare and consumption of welfare.
