ELEKTOR ELECTRONICS

307 CIRCUITS [Jan Buiting (ed)] 307 Circuits, the eighth in the 300 series of circuit design books, is a compilation of applications, projects, circuits and tips originally published in the July/August and December issues of Elektor Electronics magazine. This book brings the total of published designs in the 300 series to well over 2300. Books in the 300 series are popular with engineers, students, teachers, hobbyists and other electronics enthusiasts all over the world. Like its predecessors, 307 Circuits offers a galaxy of designs covering the entire field of modern electronics. The book is divided into five sections: Audio and hi-fi; Computers and microprocessors; General interest; Power supplies and battery charges; Radio, television and communications; Test and measurements. Many designs and projects are complemented with a printed circuit board (PCB) layout to aid in their construction. Others are complete with control software which may be ordered from the Publishers. { 342pp, 170x235mm, March 2000; PB, £18.20, 0905705629:9780905705620 , Elektor Electronics }
308 CIRCUITS [Jan Buiting (ed)] This is the ninth in the 300 series of circuit design books, again contains a wide range of circuits, tips and design ideas. The book has been divided into sections, making it easy to find related subjects in a single category. The book not only details DIY electronic circuits for home construction but also inspiring ideas for projects you may want to design from the ground up. Because software in general and microcontroller programming techniques in particular have become key aspects of modern electronics, a number of items in this book deal with these subjects only. Like its predecessors in the 300 series, "308 Circuits" covers the following disciplines and interest fields of modern electronics: test and measurement, radio and television, power supplies and battery chargers, general interest, computers and microprocessors, circuit ideas and audio and hi-fi. { 367pp, 170x235mm, August 2003; PB, £19.25, 0905705661:9780905705668 , Elektor Electronics }
309 CIRCUITS The present tenth edition of the popular '30x Circuits' series of books once again contains a comprehensive variety of circuits, sub-circuits, tips and tricks and design ideas for electronics. These 309 Circuits again offer a representative indication of present-day electronics. Regular '30x series' enthusiasts will no doubt know what to expect: 309 Circuits contains many fully elaborated electronics projects. In addition, there are numerous ideas, each of which with a potential for use in your own research, projects and applications. BUILD YOUR OWN AUDIO VALVE AMPLIFIERS [Rainer Zur Linde] To many people, the thermionic valve or electron tube is history. However, whether it is nostalgia, interest in the technical parameters, the appeal of a gleaming amplifier chassis with softly glowing valves, respect for the technical know-how of an earlier generation, or perhaps the firm conviction that the sound of a valve cannot be bettered, it is a fact that the valve is making a come-back. The book contains, apart from construction projects for preamplifiers, power amplifiers, and two amplifiers for musical instruments, information on the operation of electron tubes, while the first chapter gives a short history of the valve. { 251pp, 170x235mm, July 1995; HB, £15.55, 0905705394:9780905705392 , Elektor Electronics }
BUILD YOUR OWN HIGH-END AUDIO EQUIPMENT Top of the range hi-fi apparatus is now termed 'high-end equipment' and the name is a good indication of the prices charged for it. For those who can not, or will not, pay these prices, there is another solution offered in this book: build your own (at considerable cost savings). But this book is aimed not only at this sector of the market, but also at the many enthusiasts who want to be able to experiment and make their own modifications to their 'high-end' equipment. This book contains construction projects for solid-state and valve preamplifiers and power amplifiers, active cross-over filters, an active subwoofer, a mono/stereo compressor and a headphone amplifier. { 262pp, 170x235mm, November 1995; PB, £16.50, 0905705408:9780905705408 , Elektor Electronics }
DESIGN YOUR OWN EMBEDDED LINUX CONTROL CENTRE ON A PC [Hans Henrik Skovgaard] These days a lot of options exist if you want to control home electrical appliances. This book is not about X10, ZigBee, Z-wave or any other system that’s available commercially. Instead, it covers a do-it-your-self system made from recycled components. The main system described in this book reuses an old PC, a wireless mains outlet with three switches and one controller, and a USB webcam. All this is linked together by Linux -- as it can be obtained free of charge. This book will serve up the basics of setting up a Linux environment -- including a software development environment -- so it can be used as a control centre. The book will also guide you through the necessary setup and configuration of a webserver, which will be the interface to your very own home control centre. All that’s required to use this book and set up a control centre is some experience within PC software and hardware, including being able to surf the Internet and burn a CD-ROM. Since some new additional hardware is needed, some experience with assembling printed circuit boards is also needed. All software needed for the control centre is listed in the book and will be available for downloading from the Elektor website. { 234pp, 170x235mm, July 2008; PB, £24.00, 0905705726:9780905705729 , Elektor Electronics }
DESIGNING AUDIO CIRCUITS [Robert Sonthheimer] How does speech, music, or, indeed, any sound get from the record, the CD or the cassette tape to the loudspeaker? This is a question that many people keep on asking and to which this book endeavours to give a comprehensible answer. Understanding the background of the process is a first requirement, which is why the author in the description of single components makes clear what exactly happens in the component. An understanding is also engendered of phenomena such as noise, hum, distortion, and others, as well as standards such as the decibel and the RIAA characteristic. Designing circuits is practically impossible without an understanding of the various networks involved in the conversion of the input sound to the sound emanating from a loudspeaker. To this end, the author describes four important basic circuits using an operational amplifier, a component without which modern audio circuits can no longer be imagined. Variants of these four circuits return in many of the other circuits contained in this book. Building circuits, including ancillary and special ones, form the practical parts of this book. These circuits can be applied in audio equipment as well as with certain musical instruments. There are preamplifiers, filters, output stages, power supplies, compandors, mixer panels, level meters, bandwidth limiters, headphone amplifiers, playback stages, as well as tips on construction and faultfinding. { 276pp, 170x235mm, October 1998; HB, £20.75, 0905705505:9780905705507 , Elektor Electronics }

FAULTFINDING IN COMPUTERS & DIGITAL CIRCUITS : Testing & Measuring [Translated by Samuel Shirley] This book is concerned with the craft of fault-finding, measurement and testing in modern electronic systems and devices, which are primarily digital. The typical 'IBM-compatible' personal computer (PC) can serve as an example of these devices. The knowledge and technical skills needed to put such equipment into service, and to maintain it in good working order, go beyond the level of simple self-help tips and basic measurements. Furthermore, a purely theoretical understanding of the technology is not adequate: the experienced service engineer or technician can be recognised by his understanding of the limitations of his test equipment, his familiarity with the subtleties and problem areas of the technology, and above all by the fact that he knows how to deal with real-life faults. The book is primarily aimed at PC users, service technicians, PC hobbyists and persons who are responsible for their firm's PC systems, but it will be useful for students and vocational trainees. { 627pp, 170x240mm, December 1998; HB, £31.15, 0905705602:9780905705606 , Elektor Electronics }

HANDBOOK FOR SOUND TECHNICIANS [F P Zantis] A sound technician has to be a jack of all trades. He/she requires not only a thorough knowledge of recording and playback equipment and electro-acoustics, but also has to have good practical experience of electronics to be able to locate faults and, if at all possible, repair these in situ. Also, he/she must have reasonable knowledge of music and musical instruments to be able to make recordings of a variety of such instruments. In brief, a sound technician is a person who can render a live musical performance into a real treat, and is at the same time fully au fait with what goes on in the recording studio. This book contains chapters on basic theory; microphones and musical instruments; various types of amplifier; loudspeakers; effects equipment; recording techniques; lighting equipment; the rehearsal room; and faultfinding and small repairs. It also contains a useful glossary of terms used in sound engineering and a list of adjectives describing sound colouring. { 318pp, 170x240mm, March 1999; PB, £20.75, 0905705483:9780905705484 , Elektor Electronics }

LASERS : Theory & Practice [Dirk R Baur] Although the laser is a relatively recent development, it is already no longer possible to imagine our lives without it. There is little, if any, literature on the practical use of lasers. This book aims to rectify that situation to some extent. Lasers: Theory and Practice is written for a wider readership. It consists of two main parts. The first deals with the fundamentals of lasers, including such topics as types of laser, modes of laser operation, wavelengths, chopping, scanning and applications. The second part contains a number of practical circuits and experiments. The circuits comprise, among others, a protection/alarm system, a distance meter, a seismograph, a pulse counter, an optical receiver, and an eavesdropping device. There are also some experiments in holography. { 180pp, 175x240mm, October 1997; HB, £20.75, 0905705521:9780905705521 , Elektor Electronics }

MICROCONTROLLER BASICS [Burkhard Kainka] Microcontrollers have become an indispensable part of modern electronics. They make things possible that vastly exceed what could be done previously. Innumerable applications show that almost nothing is impossible. There’s thus every reason to learn more about them, but that raises the question of where to find a good introduction to this fascinating technology. The answer is easy: this Microcontroller Basics book, combined with the 89S8252 Flash Board project published by Elektor Electronics. However, this book offers more than just a basic introduction. It clearly explains the technology using various microcontroller circuits and programs written in several different programming languages. Three microcontrollers from the 8051 family are used in the sample applications, ranging from the simple 89C2051 to the AN2131, which is designed to support USB applications. The programming tools include assemblers, Basic-52 and BASCOM-51, and several C compilers. Every reader can thus find the programming environment most suitable to his or her needs. In the course of the book, the reader gradually develops increased competence in converting his or her ideas into microcontroller circuitry. All of the sample programs can be downloaded from the Elektor Electronics website. That has the added advantage that the latest versions are always available. { 231pp, 140x210mm, December 2005; PB, £19.50, 090570567X:9780905705675 , Elektor Electronics }
MODERN HIGH-END VALVE AMPLIFIERS : Based on Toroidal Output Transformers [Ir Menno van der Veen] Explains the whys and wherefores of toroidal output transformers at various technical levels, starting with elementary concepts and culminating in complete mathematical descriptions. In all of this, the interactions of the output valves, transformer and loudspeaker form the central theme. Next come the practical aspects. The schematic diagram of a valve amplifier often appears to be very simple at first glance, but anyone who has built a modern valve amplifier knows that a lot of critical details are hidden behind the apparent simplicity. These are discussed extensively, in connection with designs for amplifiers without output powers ranging from 10 to 100 watts. Finally, the author gives some attention to a number of special valve amplifiers, and to the theory and practice of negative feedback. { 250pp, 170x240mm, July 1999; HB, £27.25, 0905705637:9780905705637 , Elektor Electronics }
PC INTERFACES UNDER WINDOWS : Measurement & Control Using Standard Ports [Burkhard Kainka & Hans-Joachim Berndt] While it was relatively easy to directly access PC interfaces using a DOS computer, under Windows things are not all that simple. This book shows you how it can be done. The construction and operation of programs and circuits for the following applications are extensively described: control circuits; measurement equipment; analogue/digital converters; EPROM programmer; storage oscilloscope; l2C applications; making measurements with the Sound card; making measurements with a video capture card; asynchronous serial data transmission; and many more. In addition to exact, practically oriented descriptions of the traditional PC interfaces (what can they do and how they are addressed via software), the authors describe the DIY construction and programming of a number of highly interesting circuits, all of which can be connected to the PC ports. It is not necessary to open up the PC for any of these projects. The applications described in this book are based on 32-bit operating systems (Windows 95/98 and later). The preferred programming languages are Visual Basic and Delphi. The CD-ROM contains all the example programs in VB5, Delphi 3 or 4, with all source files in executable forms. PORT.DLL is also included. In addition, there are two complete application programs: COMPUNI.EXE (a universal interface application program) and SSCAN.EXE (a complete oscilloscope application for the sound card). { 296pp, 170x235mm, January 2002; PB, £27.25, 0905705653:9780905705651 , Elektor Electronics }
PC SERVICE & REPAIR : Fault Finding in Personal Computers [W Matthes] Competition among the many PC suppliers for a share of the market has resulted in steadily falling prices. An unfortunate side-effect is, however, a decline in the level of service offered to the user. 'Knowledgeable' sales staff always ready to 'help out' turn out to be rather less than knowledgeable, and when repairs are necessary the 'technical service department' proves to be a separate, specialist organisation that is only too pleased to sign the PC owner up for an overpriced service contract. Therefore, the PC user needs to be able to fend for him/herself: to be able to recognise, localise and, above all, to remedy the problem in the computer. PC Service and Repair provides the information which the PC user needs to be able to deal with faults in his/her computer system whenever they occur. With the aid of this book, he/she can tackle fault-finding at various levels, ranging from replacement of complete cards or assemblies to the identification of a single faulty component. The fault-finding approach in the book is highly structured and designed in such a way that even non-technical PC users can successfully identify and remedy problems. The book comes complete with a diskette containing a number of programmes that will help the reader with fault-finding and general maintenance of the computer. These programmes consist of an automated fault-diagnosis guide and a variety of test and utility programmes. { 479pp, 175x240mm, July 1997; HB, £31.15, 0905705416:9780905705415 , Elektor Electronics }
PIC MICROCONTROLLERS : 50 Projects for Beginners & Experts [Bert van Dam] This hands-on book covers a series of exciting and fun projects with PIC microcontrollers. For example a silent alarm, a people sensor, a radar, a night buzzer, a VU meter, a RGB fader, a serial network, a poetry box and a sound super-compression. You can build over 50 projects for your own use. The clear explanations, schematics, and pictures of each project on a breadboard make this a fun activity. You can also use this book as a study guide. The technical background information in each project explains why the project is set up the way it is, including the use of datasheets. This way you’ll learn a lot about the project and the microcontroller being used, and you can expand the project to suit your own need . . . making it ideal for use in schools and colleges. This book can also be used as a reference guide. The explanation of the JAL programming language and all of the expansion libraries used is unique and found nowhere else. Using the index, you can easily locate projects that serve as examples for the main commands. But even after you have built all the projects it will still be a valuable reference guide to keep next to your PC. Four microcontrollers are discussed, the 12f675, 16f628, 16f876A, and 16f877, as well as how to migrate programs from one microcontroller to another. All software used in this book can be downloaded for free, including all of the source code, a program editor, and the JAL open source programming language. This powerful and yet easy to learn language is used by hobbyists and professionals world-wide.
