![]() | ABNORMAL CORTICAL DEVELOPMENT & EPILEPSY : From Basic to Clinical Science [R Spreafico, G Avanzini & F Andermann (eds)] Thanks to advanced imaging techniques, it is now possible to recognise in vivo structural alterations of the cortex leading in many patients to epileptic syndromes, frequently resistant to pharmacological treatment. Areas analysed in this book are: mechanisms of cortical development; animal models of neuronal migration disorders mimicking human pathology; electroclinical, neuroradiological and neuropathological studies of the different forms of cortical dysplasia. This volume includes contributions from neurologists, epileptologists, neuropaediatricians as well as paediatricians and neuroscientists, stimulating a multidisciplinary discussion to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. { 324pp, 175x245mm, December 1999; £59.50, 0861965795:9780861965793 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | ADRENAL CANCER [Xavier Bertagna (ed)] Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma is classically associated with a dismal prognosis. Yet its clinical presentation is changing (more and more classified as 'incidentaloma'). New insights have emerged on its pathophysiological mechanisms (through the genetic elucidation of familial syndromes), and Reference Centers within National and European Networks are now offering more standardised and efficient multidisciplinary clinical management of these difficult patients. All these important aspects are described by experts in nine chapters dealing with epidemiology, prognosis, and clinical management, pathology, molecular pathophysiological mechanisms, modern imaging approaches, surgical and chemotherapeutical approaches of primary and secondary lesions, and the particular aspects of adrenal cortical carcinoma in children. This book, with its many figures and photographs, will be of major interest to endocrinologists, radiologists and nuclear medicine experts, pathologists, surgeons, oncologists, paediatricians. After a thorough reading, one will better recognise a suspicious adrenal 'incidentaloma', diagnose steroid hypersecretion, suspect a familial disease, consult with the pathologist and surgeon, manipulate difficult drugs like O,p'DDD, participate in multidisciplinary discussions with oncologists, radiotherapeutists, molecular biologists... Modern medicine in action! { 133pp, 170x240mm, January 2006; PB, £27.50, 2742005935:9782742005932 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | ADVANCES IN MAGNESIUM RESEARCH : New Data [P J Porr, M Nechifor & J Durlach (eds)] This comprehensive treatise by international authorities will provide a major reference for all those interested in different aspects of magnesium. The last magnesium congress held in Romania gave the opportunity for extensive discussions and interchange of information between researchers from all over the world. { 267pp, 170x240mm, January 2006; PB, £43.99, 2742006060:9782742006069 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | ANXIETY : Neurobiology,Clinic & Therapeutic Perspectives [Michel Hamon, Hélène Ollat & Marie- Hélène Thiébot (eds)] Although everybody had and will experience anxiety, its intensity, frequency and characteristics may vary from what can be considered as "normal" to pathological. The development of benzodiazepine as anxiolytics has been a major step firstly in therapeutics and secondly in the understanding of the associated biological mechanisms. Recently, new drugs without secondary effects of benzodiazepines have been developed. The purpose of the book was to take stock of the present knowledge: clinical aspects of pathological anxiety, neurobiological mechanisms associated with stress and anxiety, molecular targets of potent anxiolytic drugs, new issues and directions. { 220pp, 180x260mm, January 1993; PB, £30.50, 2742000186:9782742000180 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | ATLAS OF ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY, VOLUME 1 : EEG Awake & Sleep EEG Activation Procedures & Artifacts [Arielle Crespel & Philippe Gélisse] The aim of this extensively illustrated work is to better the knowledge of visual analysis of EEGs for neurologists and other specialists who use electroencephalography as well as EEG technologists. This first volume covers the scope of the main features of physiological EEG wake and sleep activities in children and adults, activation procedures and the most commonly found artefacts. Indeed, a more thorough knowledge of these elements is necessary so as not to misinterpret them as pathological traits. { 323pp, 293x210mm, January 2005; PB, £68.50, 274200582X:9782742005826 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | ATLAS OF ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY, VOLUME 2 : The Epilepsies -- EEG & Epileptic Syndromes [Arielle Crespel, Philippe Gélisse, Michelle Bureau & Pierre Genton] Volume 2 in this series focuses on epilepsies in their diversity following the modern classification criteria: focal epilepsies, generalised epilepsies, epileptic encephalopathies, special aetiologies and settings. Richly illustrated, each EEG plate is analysed in order to highlight the most significant elements to be used in diagnosis and interpretation. Given the practical orientation of this volume, the focus is on common forms of epilepsies, but certain less common and more intriguing forms have also bee included. { 407pp, 297x215mm, January 2006; PB, £77.50, 2742006001:9782742006007 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS [Daria Riva & Isabelle Rapin (eds)] Autism is a complex disorder of neurodevelopment resulting in pervasive abnormalities in social interaction and communication, repetitive behaviours and restricted interests. It presents difficult challenges to physicians and other professionals and especially to the parents and families of affected individuals. The aim of this volume is to provide an update on this multi-faceted condition, and to review most of its major features, in particular its biology, genetics and current understanding of its brain basis. The book emphasises the importance of early detection, and spells out appropriate steps for clinical diagnosis and investigations such as neuropsychology, electrophysiology and imaging. Of particular interest are chapters that focus on differential diagnosis, advances in neurogenetics and molecular biology, possible consequences of immunisations and the relation between autism and epilepsy. { 218pp, 175x247mm, January 2005; HB, £54.99, 2742005900:9782742005901 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | BENIGN CHILDHOOD PARTIAL SEIZURES & RELATED EPILEPTIC SYNDROMES [C P Panayiotopoulos] The most important advance in recent epileptology is the recognition of epileptic syndromes and diseases, most of which are well defined and easy to diagnose. The benign childhood partial seizures syndromes exemplify the importance of a precise diagnosis and classification of epilepsies. They are common, and have an excellent prognosis which is better than that of febrile convulsions. Paediatricians and clinical neurophysiologists are now familiar with the Rolandic seizures but are not yet accustomed to diagnosing other benign childhood partial seizures and in particular benign childhood occipital seizures which are often confused with cerebral insults or migraine. The aim of this reference book is to describe the clinical and EEG manifestations of benign childhood partial seizures with particular emphasis on the occipital seizures which are often more characteristic, easier to diagnose and, in some cases, more benign than Rolandic seizures. { 406pp, 175x245mm, January 1999; HB, £86.50, 0861965779:9780861965779 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | BENIGN FOCAL EPILEPSIES IN INFANCY, CHILDHOOD & ADOLESCENCE [N Fejerman & R H Caraballo] It is well known that the incidence of epilepsies is higher in this age period than in any other time in the life span. The frequent occurrence of seizures refractory to antiepileptic drug treatments is of great concern. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the group of benign epilepsy syndromes presented in this book is clearly more prevalent in childhood than the intractable epilepsies. Neurologists and paediatricians should be familiar with these conditions because accurate diagnosis, and its consequent good prognosis, may save much suffering to the family. Special emphasis, however, is given to the small proportion of children who, in spite of presenting a usually benign disease, show an atypical evolution which hampers their neuropsychological development. It is fundamental to be aware of the possible ill effects of some antiepileptic drugs in these cases. Finally, advancements in the recognition of new -- and not so rare -- epileptic syndromes are presented. All the subjects are supported by extensive experience of the authors based in large series of patients. { 266pp, 170x240mm, July 2007; HB, £77.50, 2742006591:9782742006595 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | BIO-CLINICAL INTERFACE : Bio-Clinical Psychiatry Mapping Brain Function [J P Macher, M A Crocq & J F Nedelec] This book is a selection of papers presented recently at the annual scientific conferences -- known as "the bioclinical interface" -- held at Rouffac in Alsace. It puts the accent firmly on the modern aspects and contemporary problems of psychiatry. The first part of the book deals with biological and clinical areas. The second gives an almost exhaustive overview of the psychiatric applications of imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. { 490pp, 180x260mm, January 1995; PB, £41.99, 2742001107:9782742001101 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | BIODIVERSITY OF MALARIA IN THE WORLD [Jean Mouchet, Pierre Carnevale, Marc Coosemans, Jean Julvez , Sylvie Manguin, Dominique Richard-Lenoble, & Jacques Sircoulon] A million deaths every year, 500 million sufferers, 2 billion people at risk: those were the figures concerning malaria in 2000. The distribution and seriousness of the disease vary according to pathogenic agents, vectors and the environment. At the present time, 90% of deaths from the strain of malaria caused by P. falciparum affect tropical Africa, where only 10% of the world's population lives. The African continent is home to the most efficient vectors and the climate is eminently favourable to transmission of the disease. Serious outbreaks also occur in the wooded regions of South-East Asia, New Guinea and Amazonia. Elsewhere in the tropical and subtropical world, the strain of malaria caused by P. vivax and/or P. malariae is less severe. This book describes 50 years of active struggle against malaria, a succession of periods of euphoria followed by periods of depression that have not shaken researchers' belief that the scourge of malaria can be eliminated. { 428pp, 215x280mm, February 2008; HB, £54.99, 2742006168:9782742006168 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | BIOTECHNOLOGY OF BLOOD PROTEINS : Purification, Clinical & Biological Applications [Claude Rivat & Jean-François Stoltz] There are today five major proteins in plasma fractioning. In the near future, other fractions could also be used as therapeutic agents. But perhaps they could be used for alternative, non-therapeutic applications? For example, producing human culture media with specific ingredients for biotechnology research might also be of use. Whatever the future may hold, there is one essential question: in today's world of cellular and genetic engineering, are extracted therapeutic proteins still of any relevance? For a clear and up-to-date view of recent developments in blood-protein-separation technology, this book will prove an invaluable resource. { 322pp, 180x260mm, January 1993; PB, £69.99, 2742000070:9782742000074 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | CANCER : A Dysmethylation Syndrome [Maurice Israël & Laurent Schwartz] In this book the authors suggest that a 'dysmethylation syndrome' may affect the vital regulation of cell growth, metabolism and mitosis, and may then lead to cancer. These dysmethylations (which may be hyper- or hypo-methylations) affect not only the expression of the genes involved in growth and mitosis, but also the activity of enzymes such as phosphatase PP2A, which is assembled after methylation. This phosphatase limits the effects of the trophic kinases activated by growth factors or oncogenes. In the neurones, the syndrome associated with a deficit in the methylation of phosphatase and other substrates favours the accumulation of hyperphosphorylated proteins, as in Alzheimer's disease. This would mean that cancer and Alzheimer's disease, as well as Biermer's anaemia, are linked to cellular methylations. { 117pp, 170x244mm, January 2005; PB, £31.99, 2742005978:9782742005970 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | CHILDHOOD EPILEPSIES & BRAIN DEVELOPMENT [A Nehlig, J Motte, S L Moshé & P Plouin (eds)] The epilepsies are quite frequent among the general population and particularly during childhood. Many childhood epilepsies are associated with abnormalities of brain development as well as with learning abilities. CHILDHOOD EPILEPSIES AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT brings together contributions from many international eminent scientists and clinicians involved in the diagnosis, treatment and research on childhood epilepsies and in the study of specific features of brain development in relation to the pathophysiology of childhood epilepsies. This book is recommended to all clinicians who would like up-to-date knowledge of the basic aspects of brain development and seizures of the developing brain. { 320pp, December 1999; £87.50, 0861965787:9780861965786 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | CITIES & NETWORKS IN EUROPE : A Critical Approach of Polycentrism [Nadine Cattan (ed)] This aim of this book is to look at the dominant representation that at present underpin the issues of territorial organisation and planning in Europe. Cities and networks are often envisaged as inevitably driving territorial development. However, the conceptualisation of European territorial integration has often been reduced to two conventional models: the centre-periphery model and the hierarchical model of urban networks. Limiting territorial integration to these two schema means that integration is limited. Today, reference to polycentric territorial development has to some extent changed the picture. Rather than being viewed in a polarised, pyramidal manner, spatial dynamics are being read in terms of interconnection and reticulation. In addition, reflection on the subject of polycentric territorial strategies has encouraged politicians and spatial planners to include the principle of "territorial cohesion" in the priorities of European public policies. From considerations which associate conceptual approaches and analytical studies, this book makes it possible to understand in what manner polycentrism, viewed as an alternative to metropolisation, could sow the seeds for new readings, at various scales, of the organisation of European territory. The main challenge of this book is to explain why it is worthwhile revisiting some rather too static representations of territorial systems in Europe. The aim is to promote the emergence and the consolidation of new, critical ways of looking at the issues of territorial dynamics. { 207pp, 180x260mm, July 2007; PB, £29.50, 274200677X:9782742006779 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | COELIAC DISEASE [N Cerf-Bensoussan, N Brousse, S Caillat-Zucman, C Cellier & J Schmitz (eds)] Proceeding of the 10th International Symposium. Coeliac disease is again in front of the stage. After the advent of intestinal biopsy in clinical practice in the early sixties and during the following years, coeliac disease gained its status of a disease exemplary of the immune reaction of the gut mucosa to food antigens. During the following 10-15 years coeliac disease vanished behind progresses in mucosal immunology, and in the molecular biology of HLA molecules. The last years have seen the transformation of coeliac disease, from a rare and serious malabsorption syndrome into a polymorphic condition, the "coeliac iceberg" the immersed part of which now raises important public health issues. Regular International Symposium witness the development of our knowledge concerning coeliac disease. The last International Symposium on coeliac disease took place in Paris, at the Pasteur Institute in June 2-5, 2002. Its aim was to equally underline the major progresses made during the recent years in epidemiology, the genetics, the pathophysiology of the intestinal lesions and in the serological methods of diagnosis, the new clinical aspects of the disease and the more accurate evaluation of the risk of cancer, lesser than previously estimated. We hope that these proceeding will fulfil the expectations of all those, scientists as well as clinicians, paediatricians or adult gastroenterologists, who wish to update their knowledge on coeliac disease, this old but still stimulating lady of gastroenterology. { 300pp, 180x260mm, January 2004; PB, £49.99, 2742004920:9782742004928 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | COFFEE & HEALTH [Gerard Debry] This monograph is an exhaustive survey of all the health effects, beneficial or otherwise, of coffee. It starts with a study of the cultivation, consumption and composition of coffee, then moves on to analyse the effects of coffee consumption, system by system: physiological properties, clinical consequences, received opinions and proven facts. A book that will interest nutritionists, general practitioners and the simply curious. { 538pp, 170x240mm, January 1993; PB, £49.50, 2742000372:9782742000371 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | COGNITIVE DISFUNCTION IN CHILDREN WITH TEMPORAL LOBE EPILEPSY [Alexis Arzimanoglou, Albert Aldenkamp, Helen Cross, Maryse Lassonde, Solomon L Moshé & Bettina Schmitz] Much has been written about the cognitive function of children with epilepsy but despite there being extensive study of the neuropsychological status of adults with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy, it has been more limited in children. Although cognitive development in children is influenced by similar factors to adults, the role of early damage, modification of cerebral organisation and interruption of the learning process are also likely to be important. Devoted to cognitive function and dysfunction in children with temporal lobe epilepsy, this book highlights those domains that demand further research and those for which immediate established techniques for a better global care can be undertaken. { 289pp, 175x248mm, January 2005; HB, £71.99, 2742005625:9782742005628 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | COMPOSITE TISSUE ALLOGRAFTS [Jean-Michel Dubernard (ed)] Transplanting hands -- a model of composite tissue grafting -- began in Lyons in November 1998 with the transplant of one hand and then, in January 2000, of two, both with the support of the Mérieux Foundation. Advances in immunosuppression made possible some unusual transplants of tissue, such as bones, knee-joints, femurs and larynx. From these stemmed the first attempts to transplant hands. This book looks at the long-term results of reattaching hands that have been accidentally amputated. It reviews all the problems -- technical, immunological, nervous, functional and psychological -- that surgeons encountered during and after the transplants. Surgeons, transplant experts, immunologists, dermatologists, psychiatrists, neurophysiologists, physiotherapists and re-education experts will also find here answers to their ethical and legal questions about removing tissue from donors, as well as information about composite tissue grafts in plastic and reconstructive surgery. { 115pp, 180x260mm, January 2002; PB, £17.50, 2742004157:9782742004157 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | COMPREHENSIVE CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH EPILEPSY [Margarete Pfäfflin, Robert T Fraser, Rupprecht Thorbecke, Ulrich Specht & Peter Wolf (eds)] Describes an approach to diagnosing and treating people with epilepsy (though not confined to this condition) with a view of the patient as an integral human being, comprising both their seizures and the psychical and social situation. This book inquires into every treatment's goals, whilst including the patients' (and their relatives') subjective evaluations and perspectives. This includes early considerations of benefits versus risks for the patient, the ultimate question being what quality of life will be attained and how much independent life and employment will be feasible. Comprehensive Care does not necessarily need to be associated with elevated cost, as many epilepsy centres have enough knowledge, imagination, and staff for this purpose, the problem being how to combine and use existing resources most effectively. { 365pp, 175x245mm, January 2001; £86.50, 0861966104:9780861966103 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | CONTINUOUS SPIKES & WAVES DURING SLOW SLEEP ELECTRICAL STATUS EPILEPTICUS DURING SLOW SLEEP : Acquired Epileptic Aphasia & Related Conditions [A Beaumanoir, M Bureau, T Deonna, L Mira & C A Tassinari (eds)] This book collects the results of clinical experience and research, as well as the opionions of the specialists who have studied in depth several rare and complex syndromes associated with "Continuous Spikes and Waves During Slow Sleep", the Landau-Kleffner syndrome, and related conditions. It also presents a wide-ranging collection of cases presented by the participants in the meeting, and analysed in its various clinical, electrophysiological and psycho-intellectual aspects. The purpose of the book is to provide a thorough updated on specialised knowledge about the syndromes characterised by the presence of CSWS on the EEG, to bring out the many, still unanswered -- questions, and to stimulate further interdisciplinary research to verify the validity of present hypotheses, in order to clarify which preventive and therapeutic methods can best attain the control of such syndromes. { 272pp, 175x245mm, December 2000; HB, £59.50, 0861964888:9780861964888 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | CYTOCHROME P450 : Biochemistry, Biophysics & Molecular Biology [Maria Celeste Lechner (ed)] 8th Conference on Cytochrome P450, Lisbon, Portugal, October 1993. This book aims to promote the new concepts and aspects of cytochrome P450 science more intensively investigated since the previous meetings of the series. It includes original contributions from some of the most distinguished specialists in the area. The first three chapters concern topics on the evolution of cytochrome P450, the diversity of regulatory mechanisms involved in biogenesis and their importance in environment, cancer risk assessment and immunotoxicity. Chapter 4 deals with biotechnology and novel P450 functions, and includes the opening plenary lecture on basic P450 research and applications in drug development. Chapters 5 and 6 present the most recent progress in cytochrome P450 molecular structure and electron flow mechanisms. Finally, chapter 7 is a compilation of selected papers contributed by the participants in the areas of the physico-chemistry and molecular biology of cytochrome P450. { 916pp, 180x260mm, January 1994; PB, £69.99, 274200050X:9782742000500 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | DIETARY FIBRE : Mechanisms of Action in Human Physiology & Metabolism [C Cherbut, J L Barry, D Lairon & M Durand (eds)] Since the birth of the dietary fibre hypothesis in the early 1970's, research on this topic has been growing rapidly. However, though the remarkable number of experimental works, the role of fibre on human health is still uncompletely understood. The objective of this book is to synthesise the current knowledge on the physiological effects of dietary fibre in man by focusing on the mechanisms of action. { 94pp, 155x230mm, December 1995; PB, £17.50, 2742000968:9782742000968 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | DIODE LASERS IN NEUROSURGERY [F -X Roux & B Devaux (eds)] This book is the result of the authors' many years of experience in using neurosurgical lasers. They began using laser diodes in their speciality at the start of the 1990s, making them pioneers in the field. The first part of the book deals with the general physical bases and comparative bio-tissue effects of the various kinds of surgical laser, safety measures required and legislation concerning powerful lasers. The second part focuses on laser diodes alone. The authors describe in detail how they use them to operate on intracranial and intraspinal tumours, in intraventricular endoscopy, and in surgery involving epilepsy. Details are given of: technical data; the choice of parameters depending on how the lasers are used (contact and non-contact, and the type of lesion being operated on) as well as their indications in neurosurgery. The authors emphasise the practical recommendations that make this book a valuable companion for current and potential users working in neurosurgery and other surgical applications. They also mention the new and future uses of laser diodes which are currently being developed and which show that this equipment really does represent a new generation of lasers. About 100 colour illustrations and tables are used to explain and underscore the authors' points. { 86pp, 170x240mm, January 1999; PB, £33.99, 2742002766:9782742002764 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

This volume is a wide-spectrum reflection springing from the contributions of some of the most important European and American researchers in the dual diagnosis field, who were involved in the national SIP.Dip. Conference in Milan on July 2002. They contributed to a shared understanding of issues such as the relevance of psychiatric diagnosis in addiction treatment planning, with experiences from Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Spain, England, and Thomas McLellan's paradigmatic research on assessment instruments carried out over the last 30 years in the USA. { 92pp, 180x260mm, January 2004; PB, £27.50, 2742005005:9782742005000 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | DUODENOGASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX -- FROM THE DUODENUM TO THE TRACHEA : 125 Questions, 125 Answers [Robert Giuli, Carmelo Scarpignato, Jean-Marie Collard & Joel E Richter (eds)] The World OESO Congresses are planned to provide each time a thorough analysis of a single topic on oesophageal disease. The Seventh World Congress of EOSO was entirely devoted to Duodenogastroesophageal reflux. Clarification of the role of duodenogastroesophageal reflux in the context of oesophageal disease has been hampered for a long time by inadequate methods to detect it. The recent availability of methodology to detect either biliary or non acidic reflux has allowed to gain new insights into pathophysiology and to develop new therapeutic approaches. This book does not merely represent the proceedings of an International Congress: it collects the answers to 125 key questions, offered by basic scientists and clinicians from all over the world, all of whom have personally contributed to the topic, in order to provide a glimpse of what may lie ahead. { 530pp, 165x245mm, January 2006; HB, £90.99, 2742006478:9782742006472 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | EEG IN CHILDHOOD EPILEPSY : Initial Presentation & Long-Term Follow-Up [Hermanne Doose] EEG often plays a less important role in the differential diagnosis of cerebral seizure disorders than it used to do. Imaging procedures have come to overshadow it completely in many cases. In view of the current literature on the EEG in epilepsy, this shift in diagnostic priorities may be partly justified, at least as far as adults are concerned. But on no account does this apply to childhood epilepsy. This volume provides a critical review of the pertinent literature and shows quite clearly that very little attention is paid to major topic in this field. { 400pp, 215x300mm, January 2003; HB, £86.50, 2742004882:9782742004881 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | EMERGING DISEASES : Emergence & Control of Zoonotic Ortho- & Paramyxovirus Diseases [Betty Dodet & Marissa Vicari (eds)] Researchers are still identifying micro-organisms that cause new diseases in humans. A basic factor in the emergence of these diseases is the role played by animals, which act as a reservoir for certain viruses. In favourable conditions, such viruses can cross the species barrier and infect humans. The book takes a close look at two families of virus: orthomyxoviridae and paramyxoviridae, which have infected many species of vertebrates and are responsible for zoonosis. The two main parts of the book describe how the viruses operate, how they spread and the risk factors for humans. In addition to a specific and detailed study of these two micro-organisms, the book highlights the fascinating history of such diseases, their emergence, development and disappearance. They have occurred throughout human history, underscoring the role of the environment and the way it changes, often as a result of human intervention. Sponsored by the Mérieux Foundation and written by leading international specialists, this book provides first-class information about these new viruses. { 212pp, 180x260mm, January 2001; PB, £32.99, 2742004084:9782742004089 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | EPILEPSY & OTHER NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS IN COELIAC DISEASE [G Gobbi, F Andermann, S Naccarato & G Banchini (eds)] Coeliac disease may be manifested by gastrointestinal symptoms, or be silent, latent or 'potential'. It may also be present with dermatitis herpetiformis, dental enamel defects or neurological disorders -- especially epilepsy. In the case of the latter symptoms these appear mostly in relation to occipital seizures, frequently intractable. This book examines these, and other neurological manifestations. This book brings together many of the results of the investigations and opinions of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of neurology, psychiatry, internal medicine, gastroenterology, immunology, genetics and imaging. { 378pp, 180x260mm, January 1997; HB, £95.50, 086196537X:9780861965373 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | EPILEPTIC SEIZURES & SYNDROMES : With Some of Their Theoretical Implications [P Wolf (ed)] This book reflects debates and results which have developed since the introduction of an international system of classifications in epileptology. The creation of such a system was initiated, in the sixties, mainly for practical reasons: growing international exchange had revealed that divergence of terminology in epilepsy had become important enough to prove a serious obstacle to sensible discussions. The Bethel-Cleveland symposia, which was at the origin of this book, aim to bring the excellence of advanced inter-disciplinary and controversial workshops to a larger public. The book concentrates on a selection of topics where progress has been made, where controversies are open or where discussion needs to be stimulated. { 678pp, 180x260mm, January 1994; HB, £104.99, 0861964306:9780861964307 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | EVIDENCE-BASED CLINICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY [M J G Farthing & J J Misiewicz] During the past five years, evidence based medicine has become the sine qua non of clinical practice. Thus, the rise of evidence-based medicine has re-emphasised the need for high quality evidence that management interventions will actually benefit our patients. The authors have tried to explore some of these areas in the European Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Postgraduate Course held in Birmingham, October 1997. { 101pp, 180x260mm, January 1997; PB, £15.50, 2742001921:9782742001927 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | EYELID MYOCLONIA WITH ABSENCES [John S Duncan & C P Panayiotopoulos (eds)] Eyelid myoclonia with absences is a recently described and under-recognised syndrome of idiopathic generalised epilepsy. The diagnosis may be confused with tics, attempts at self induction, and epilepsy syndromes with a better prognosis such as childhood absence epilepsy. This book summarises current knowledge on the topic; covering the underlying anatomy and physiology of the eyelids, the clinical and electro-encephalographic features and differential diagnosis in children and adults, including a discussion on the issue of self-induction of absences. The current state of knowledge on inheritance and genetics of the condition and treatment strategies are considered. Throughout, recent advances in the field are couched in an historical context, making this book a comprehensive source for all those who need to understand this syndrome whether from a research standpoint or the clinical management of affected children and adults. As such it will be of value to neurologists, epileptologists and those involved in the care and treatment of epileptic patients. { 122pp, 180x260mm, January 1996; HB, £27.50, 0861965507:9780861965502 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | FLOWERING OF A WARATAH : A History of Australian Neurology & of the Australian Association of Neurologists [M J Eadie] Commencing with European settlement in Australia and the medical practitioners of that time, The Flowering of a Waratah traces the development of neurology in Australia from its dependence on medical advances in Britain, Europe and North America to the present day where the high standards of clinical neurology and research are acknowledged internationally. The history not only expands on some of the personalities who have contributed to the present high international standing enjoyed by Australian neurology and some of the reasons for this reputation, including the Australian Association of Neurologists itself, but it also contains the records of membership and financial accounts and of papers presented to early scientific meetings of the Association. The Flowering of a Waratah is a superbly detailed account of the history of neurology in Australia which will enrich the professional lives of future generations of Australian neurologists with a sense of being, as they and the Australian Association of Neurologists continue to flourish. { 250pp, 180x260mm, January 2000; £45.50, 0861966066:9780861966066 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | FOCAL EPILEPSY : Clinical Use of Emission Tomography [M Baldy-Moulinier, N A Lassen, j Engel Jr & S Askienazy (eds)] This volume contains the proceedings of the international symposium, 'Focal Epilepsy: Clinical Use of Functional Imaging by Means of Emission Tomography', held in Paris on 6 May 1989. The aim of the meeting was to contribute to the integration of PET/SPELT isotope tomography into the spectrum of methods used for localising the origin of seizures. Special emphasis has been placed on the investigation of temporal lobe epilepsy by SPECT/HmPAO, since this is presently the most affordable method, both technically and economically. Although the reader may not find the answers to all his questions, as the assessment of new methods and techniques and the interpretation of results are not yet complete, the contributions will serve to stimulate further studies and to encourage the compilation of data from various centres using a similar approach. { 220pp, 180x260mm, January 1990; HB, £39.50, 0861962060:9780861962068 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | FOREBRAIN AREAS INVOLVED IN PAIN PROCESSING [J M Besson, G Guilbaud & H Ollat] Our knowledge of the brain and its structures -- such as the thalamus, hypothalamus and cortex -- has made great strides over the past 15 years. As in other fields, this progress has been due to studies based on a multidisciplinary approach combining modern and traditional investigative methods. The new knowledge has highlighted the part played by some fundamental structures in pain processing. This book reviews the data that has been acquired and the new perspectives it has opened up for studying how the brain processes pain, in both humans and animals. For neurologists, neurobiologists and neurosurgeons. { 276pp, 180x260mm, January 1995; PB, £34.99, 2742000933:9782742000937 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

This Forum on immunomodulators represents a selection of important examples of immunomodulating agents readily usable in human therapy. Several potential applications of cytokines as well as synthetic products are also presented. { 316pp, 180x260mm, January 1995; PB, £59.99, 2742000763:9782742000760 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | FOUR HIDDEN METAMORPHOSES : A Remark on Blood, Muscle, Mental Diseases & Cancer [Maurice Israël] This book of biology and medicine shows how diseases: Sickle cell anaemia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, are related to the adaptation of our organism to aerial respiration. This adaptation is operated by a genetic switch substituting a set of foetal proteins, for more adequate, regulated, adult isoforms. We discover how foetal or adult metabolic pathways, may control the switch, and propose pharmacological treatments to boost the expression of the foetal gene, acting as a "spare wheel" to replace the adult gene when it is mutated. In fact this switch recapitulates a process reminding of the evolution of amphibians that left their pond to live in air and land. The foetus is also an aquatic creature that discovers at birth aerial respiration and the new weight of his body. His blood and muscle proteins will adapt. The metamorphosis is not as evident as for a tadpole, but still as deeply written in our genes. In fact, the switch is our second metamorphosis, the story started much earlier, when a host cell, already surviving oxygen, incorporated a bacteria, our future mitochondria, that had a more efficient oxidative metabolism. A symbiotic arrangement followed. In the course of development, the most ancient pathways come on stage first, followed by the most recent mitochondrial acquisitions. The developmental maturation of metabolic pathways changes our cells, it is our first metamorphosis. It is involved in apoptosis in diseases such as Azheimer's or Cancer. Since mitochondria took the burden of making ATP, the ancient oxidative mechanism became redundant. Its ATPase evolved forming acidic compartments that control neurotransmission or thermoregulation. This third metamorphosis is implicated in other diseases (adrenoleucodystrophy). Finally primates, who lost uricase, developed diseases related to the role of uric acid which became their new antioxidant: Gout, Autism or Schizophrenia seem to depend on this last, forth metamorphosis. { 100pp, 180x260mm, January 2004; PB, £29.50, 2742005064:9782742005062 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | FROM FIRST UNPROVOKED SEIZURE TO NEWLY DIAGNOSIED EPILEPSY [Philippe Ryvlin, Ettore Beghi, Peter Camfield & Dale Hesdorffer] This new edition of the book series dedicated to "Progress in Epileptic Disorders" is the result of a recently held unique gathering of international experts that debated on the prognostic and therapeutic issues raised by the new management of first unprovoked seizures and of newly diagnosed epilepsy. ![]() | GENATLAS : A Catalogue of Mapped Genes & Other Markers: 2nd Edition [Jean Frézal, Marie-Sophie Baule & Thérèse de Fougherolle] Second edition of the catalogue Genatlas prepared from the data stored in GENATLAS data base and updated (January 1991). This book includes all the genes and other markers, such as fragile sites and anonymous D segments, mapped upon the chromosomes of man, representing altogether over 6,500 items and almost 9,400 pertinent references (4,400 and 5,400 in the first edition -- July 1989). Markers are first presented by name, with a specific list of clinical disorders (750 items) and by symbol. Lists have also been drawn up per chromosome and per category. In the list per chromosome, are included the anonymous D segments which are regionally assigned. Current linkage data for all markers are given as well as references per marker. Besides the clinical disorders upon which a special emphasis is placed, markers are also arranged by category such as antigens enzymes (with E.C. numbers) ; hormones and receptors, transporters and channels; transcription factors; other peptides and proteins; proto-oncongenes with their products; anti-oncongenes, virus-associated markers; complementing repair factors; identified DNA sequences and the mitochondria genome. An overview of the organisation of the genome is given with the recording and description of gene clusters, of families of genes and, finally, on "neighbourhood" maps around markers of (clinical) interest. Searching is made easier thanks to the use of synonyms. Thus, "Genatlas" is a useful and practical tool for mappers, biologists and physicians. { 1013pp, 180x260mm, January 1991; PB, £69.99, 0861963245:9780861963249 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | GENERALIZED SEIZURES : From Clinical Phenomenology to Underlying Systems & Networks [Edouard Hirsch, Frederick Andermann, Patrick Chauvel, Jerome Engel, Fernando Lopes da Silva & Hans Luders] A 'generalised seizure' corresponds to an ictal manifestation whose initial semeiology indicates or is consistent with more than minimal involvement of both cerebral hemispheres. A 'network' is a functionally and automatically connected set of cortical and subcortical brain regions in which activity in any one part affects activity in all others. A 'system' is a group of independent but interrelated elements (networks) comprising a unified whole. A considerable amount of evidence supports the existence of cortical and subcortical networks in the genesis, expression and control of generalised seizures. Animal and human data suggested that the so-called generalised seizures involve selective networks while sparing others. A greater understanding of those systems and networks is thoroughly debated in this book. { 320pp, 175x250mm, January 2006; HB, £68.50, 2742006214:9782742006212 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

Although the physiopathology of hypertension remains obscure, much hope has been placed in research in molecular genetics. { 618pp, 180x260mm, January 1992; PB, £83.99, 086196313X:9780861963133 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | GENETICS OF FOCAL EPILEPSIES [S F Berkovic, P Genton, E Hirsch & F Picard (eds)] Genetic studies of the epilepsies are essential for clinical diagnosis, family counselling and as a critical route to understanding the basic biology of epilepsies at a molecular level. The focal epilepsies have been traditionally regarded as predominantly acquired disorders. This perception has now changed and there has been an explosion of interest in inherited forms of focal epilepsy that are emerging as being surprisingly common. This book describes the clinical features of the enlarging group of familial focal epilepsies and highlights recent molecular biological knowledge in understanding these disorders. { 286pp, 180x260mm, January 1999; HB, £86.50, 0861965698:9780861965694 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | GUT MICROFLORA : Digestive Physiology & Pathology [Jean-Claude Rambaud, Jean-Paul Buts, Gérard Corthier & Bernard Flourié (eds)] In recent years, the importance of the microflora has inspired a great deal of research based on the tools of modern molecular biology, microbiology and medicine. Moreover, the old idea of positively modulating an unbalanced microflora or inducing beneficial effects by administering selected, live microorganisms has seen a resurgence of interest with the development of the concept of 'probiotic' microorganisms. The purpose of this profoundly multidisciplinary volume is to provide a comprehensive up-to-date review of what is known about the gut microflora and its impact on disgestive physiology and pathology for all those interested in this fascinating subject. { 247pp, 175x247mm, January 2006; HB, £30.99, 2742005854:9782742005857 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | HEALTH IN FRANCE 2002 [French High Commission] How well are the French? What are the most important health-related issues for children of under 15 years of age, for young and older adults, for the elderly? What geographically and socially based inequalities affect health status? How can patients and users of the health care system -- members of the public -- be brought into the making of decisions that affect them in this literally vital field? Is our health care system well organised? And is it working in an efficient and democratic way? How are questions of resource allocation settled? This is the third in a series of official reports (the previous ones were published in 1994 and 1998) compiled by the High Committee on Public Health to analyse health status in the country, with an in-depth review of the strengths and weaknesses of the system as a whole. This report combines a critical analysis of the current health care system with a review of key current and projected health-related issues, focusing on public health targets identified from as broad and all-inclusive a perspective as possible. { 370pp, 180x260mm, January 2003; PB, £26.50, 2742004661:9782742004669 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | IMMUNE-MEDIATED DISORDERS OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM IN CHILDREN [L Angelini, M Bardare & A Martini (eds)] Immunopathogenesis has recently been receiving increased interest from researchers, leading to a better understanding of the mechanisms of neurological disorders and consequently to new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic perspectives. Clinical neuroimmunology in childhood is the focus of the present volume. This book is divided into three sections. The first part deals with the relationship between the immune and the nervous systems, from antigen presentation to autoimmunity and its role in neurological disease. In the second part, the nosography of immune-mediated neurological diseases in children is described, including those primarily involving the central nervous system and those secondary to systemic immunological disorders. The last part of the book is devoted to diagnostic and therapeutic criteria. { 284pp, 175x245mm, January 2002; £59.50, 0861966317:9780861966318 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF BIPOLARITY : An Artistic Point of View [Philippe Nuss, Marie Sellier & Jean-Paul Bath] This is both a book on art and a psychiatric manual and at the same time it is neither. It takes a radically different approach by setting out to describe subjective viewpoints: those of works of art, those of patients and those of the reader. The aim is to achieve an understanding of the psychological world of bipolar patients through a subtle interplay of connections between the subjectivity of those three protagonists. Subjectivity also prevailed in the authors' choices: which clinical aspects of bipolarity to present, and which works of art to select. So far from setting out to be exhaustive and definitive, the book proposes a number of openings. Doctors will view these openings differently depending on their own sensitivity and practice. But the book is not just for doctors; it is aimed at a wider readership. It is important for the general public to be aware that subjective movements in the psychological life of bipolar patients have their own specific identity, which is as much a subject worthy of attention as it is a source of suffering. Sensitive reading of this book will also guide bipolar patients and their families to a better understanding of the nature of the condition, and therefore to play a fuller part in the treatment offered to them. { 91pp, 273x257mm, January 2005; HB, £49.50, 2742005781:9782742005789 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | LIMBIC SEIZURES IN CHILDREN [G Avanzini, A Beaumanoir & C Munari (eds)] The aim of the colloquium from which this multi-author book derives, was to outline the specific expression of epilepsies involving the limbic structures in children and to establish a consensus on the evidence relevant to the clinical management of these epilepsies. The book addresses basic questions such as age-related aetiologic, pathogenetic and prognostic factors relevant to the course of infantile epilepsies with limbic seizures, and enlightens the criteria for their clinical and laboratory assessment. The interaction between basic scientists, neuropaediatricians and neurosurgeons contributes to define suitable strategies aimed at preventing the unfavourable course of these often severe infantile epilepsies and their optimal timing. { 258pp, 175x245mm, January 2001; HB, £59.50, 0861965957:9780861965953 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | MEDITERRANEAN DIET & HEALTH : Current News & Prospects [Pierre Besançon et al (eds)] In the early 1950s scientists became aware of the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet on health, after a survey carried out in Italy and in Greece that showed for the first time the relationship between diet and one of the highest life expectancies in the world. The main characteristic of the Mediterranean diet is its low lipid and unsaturated fatty acid content, essentially related to the consumption of olive oil. It is also based on the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and cereals. This work, addressed to a wide public of professionals working in the field of food -- scientists, physicians, dieticians, public health and prevention policy decision-makers, researchers in agrofood industry -- summarises in detail the basic principles of this simple and balanced diet. This work, co-ordinated by a team of researchers and physicians from the Montpellier agricultural science research centre (Agropolis), broadens the nutrition field and also includes the agricultural production mode and the technologies used in the agrofood industry. It offers an original multidisciplinary approach and proposes a complete synthesis on a fascinating subject for all and sundry. { 168pp, 180x260mm, January 2001; PB, £22.99, 2742003436:9782742003433 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | MOLECULAR & CELLULAR TARGETS FOR ANTI-EPILEPTIC DRUGS [G Avanzini, G Regesta, P Tanganelli & M Avoli (eds)] A new phase of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) investigation has begun in which new drugs can be designed to target specific epileptogenic mechanisms. A rational approach to therapy today requires not only a full awareness of phamacokinetics of AEDs but also a thorough knowledge of their molecular targets and of their influence on excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms in the brain. This book provides a multi-author systematic look at this subject, from neurobiological bases to clinical applications. It includes four sections dealing with fundamental aspects of cortical excitability, models of epileptic disorders, targets for anti-epileptic drugs and rational approaches to therapy. Each chapter provides a review of a specific topic prepared by well known scientists active in the field, introducing their most recent results in a concise and comprehensive form. { 266pp, 175x245mm, January 1997; HB, £95.50, 086196554X:9780861965540 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | MOTOR DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN [E Fedrizzi, G Avanzini & P Crenna (eds)] The advances of basic sciences combined with the perspectives of developmental neurology have recently modified the traditional outlook on the evolution of motor behaviour. The maturation of neuro-anatomic structures is studied nowadays as just one facet of a complex process: the various elements of innate global patterns, the acquisition of antigravitary schemes as well as manipulative and praxic skills, control of posture and gait, ocular motility and motricity, converge to create the present picture of a continuous adaptive interaction between the child's genotype and its environment. This book stimulates the debate and the exchange of concepts between researchers and clinical specialists. { 185pp, 180x260mm, January 1994; HB, £59.50, 0861964489:9780861964482 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | MOVEMENT DISORDERS IN CHILDREN : A Clinical Update with Video Recordings [Nardo Nardocci & Emilio Fernandes-Alvarez (eds)] Book & DVD. This book covers a wide range of disease conditions that are characterised by involuntary movements possibly associated with signs of more diffuse dysfunction of the nervous system. These include both genetically determined and acquired conditions, running a clinical course that may be progressive, static, or paroxysmal. Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the movement disorders of children. There has been an increase in our understanding of the pathogenesis of these disorders, and new perspectives for their diagnosis and treatment have emerged. This book aims to provide neurologists, paediatricians, and specialists in developmental medicine with a comprehensive update on these issues. The more recent advances on dystonias, neurotransmitter disorders, chorea and PANDAS, tics and Tourette syndrome, paroxysmal dyskinesias, psychogenetic movement disorders and other specific syndromes and diseases -- such as opsoclonus-myoclonus, rapid onset dystonia-parkinsonism, pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration and Rett syndromes -- are illustrated, and current topics on genetics, biochemistry, brain imaging, physiological investigations, quantitative assessment, and the pharmacological and surgical treatment of childhood movement disorders are covered. The book also includes rich video documentation which we trust may be a helpful and crucial contribution for all professionals involved in the field of movement disorders, where the correct semiologic definition of the different conditions is one of the most important but problematic steps in the diagnostic work-up. { 178pp, 175x250mm, June 2007; HB, £54.99, 2742006575:9782742006571 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

Part of this work is dedicated to the rehabilitation of patients affected by neuromuscular diseases. { 154pp, 180x260mm, January 1997; £59.50, 0861965418:9780861965410 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | NEUROPATHOLOGY OF FOCAL EPILEPSIES : An Atlas [R Lahl, R Villagran & W Teixeira (eds)] Interdisciplinary co-operation between epileptologists, neuroradiologists, psychologists and neurosurgeons is the most fundamental prerequisite for localising and performing targeted resections of epileptogenic foci from patients with focal therapy resistant epilepsy. Worldwide there has been a steady increase in the number of epilepsy surgery centres, and in the number of operations performed on children and babies. A systematic neuropathological description is presented here involving macroscopic and histological findings. In this book, a systematic documentation of characteristic as well as rarer alterations is presented involving 444 patients who had been operated on in Germany between 1990 and 1997 at the Bethel Epilepsy Centre in Bielefeld. It includes 257 patients with temporal lobes (TLE) and 187 patients with extratemporal epilepsy (ETE). { 320pp, 210x300mm, December 2003; HB, £136.50, 0861966333:9780861966332 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL BASIS OF CEREBRAL BLOOD FLOW CONTROL : An Introduction [S Mraovitch & R Sercombe (eds)] This textbook covers the entire subject of the regulation of cerebral blood flow, with special emphasis on neurogenic mechanisms, and relationships with physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Both research and clinical aspects are covered. Established authorities in the field of cerebral circulation and metabolism, backed up by other internationally known neuroscientists, have prepared this in-depth text-book review of cerebral circulation and its control, together with the necessary background information in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, pharmacology and vascular physiology. Techniques of investigation of cerebral circulation and metabolism are dealt with in a comprehensive manner, allowing the reader to evaluate approaches to a particular research problem and to assess the reliability of published results. Particular emphasis is given to the role and effects of neurotransmitters and neural systems -- extrinsic and intrinsic -- in controlling cerebral blood flow, while two chapters deal with related clinical disorders. A carefully selected reference list allows further personal research by the interested reader. Eminently readable (number of text references limited), well illustrated, seriously documented and up-to-date. This is a suitable reference book for graduate level onwards, and should be of special interest to all those in or entering this field of research. It should be of interest to researchers in physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy, neuroscience, as well as clinicians, especially neurologists, neurosurgeons and nuclear medicine specialists of the brain. { 408pp, 200x240mm, December 1996; PB, £68.50, 0861962729:9780861962723 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | NON-VISUAL HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTIONS : Prospects for the Visually Handicapped [Dominique Burger & Jean-Claude Sperandio (eds)] Multimodal interface systems make it possible to interact with computers using speech and hearing, touch and gesture. The role of vision in human computer interaction could therefore be brought back to its natural place in communication. In many applications, non-visual presentation methods could be used efficiently to provide more natural human-computer interfaces. This evolution is of particular relevance for the visually handicapped. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete understanding of state-of-the-art research in non-visual human-computer interaction. The book is aimed at all researchers and developers interested in improving the accessibility of software applications, especially for people with disabilities. { 213pp, 180x260mm, January 1993; PB, £35.50, 2742000143:9782742000142 , John Libbey Eurotext } |
![]() | NORMAL & PATHOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE HUMAN BRAIN & SPINAL CORD [Maris Dambska & Krystyna E Wisniewski (eds)] This book is a contemporary statement of what is known about morphological development of the normal and abnormal human nervous system and puts into perspective the continued importance of changes that occur in the course of foetal development and how these processes may become defective. The first part of the book deals with the development of the central nervous system (CNS) from a morphological point of view including data from the fields of biochemistry, immunology and genetics. The second part reviews the genetic and nongenetic etiology of abnormal CNS development and discusses throughly all patologic syndromes that are related to disturbances of brain development. With the rapid progress in such modern branches of science as neurochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, this book will be invaluable for researchers working in these fields. { 192pp, 200x240mm, January 1999; £68.50, 0861965914:9780861965915 , John Libbey Eurotext } |

![]() | OCCIPITAL SEIZURES & EPILEPSIES IN CHILDREN [F Andermann, A Beaumanoir, L Mira, J Roger & C A Tassinari (eds)] This volume is devoted to a particular facet of infantile epilepsy, Occipital Seizures and Epilepsies. That an epileptogenic process common to all ages manifests itself differently according to the stages of cerebral evolution suggests that a deeper investigation of these age-dependent epilepsies and their related conditions is necessary. Findings of basic sciences in epileptogenicity are compared with clinical data and developed towards practical applications of general interest, such as the fundamental differential diagnosis between occipital seizures and migrainous attacks. Since the normal maturation of the brain in the post-natal period largely depends on early sensory-motor experience, particularly visual functions, it is essential to consider research maturation of visual systems, as it may offer stimulating insights into the peculiarities of these 'epileptic syndromes' which represent a model for the study of the child's epilepsy. Though dealing with a particular problem in paediatric neurology, they point to a general process in human biology. { 246pp, 180x260mm, January 1995; HB, £59.50, 0861963857:9780861963850 , Jo |
