![]() | ACCOUNTING FOR LAW STUDENTS & PRACTITIONERS [Sheeda Kalideen & Lester Sullivan] Few professions are free of the need to understand accounting, least of all the legal profession. Legal accounting is a category all on its own, because attorneys are expected to keep trust accounts for most of their clients, deal with conveyancing and understand the issues around shared accounts -- whether at a corporate or domestic level. This book deals with the fundamentals of accounting, such as debits and credits and how income statements and balance sheets are created. The book also takes you through the transfer journal, bank reconciliations, VAT, correspondent accounts, accounting in conveyancing matters, legislation applying to attorneys' accounting and partners' capital accounts. Easy-to-understand examples clearly explain the principles involved. { 121pp, 180x260mm, January 2007; PB, £14.00, 0702176699:9780702176692 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | APPLIED BUSINESS STATISTICS : Methods & Excel-Based Applications: Second Edition [Trevor Wegner] Book & CD. This is an introductory Statistics text written specifically for Management students who require an understanding of the role of Statistics in analysing business data from the areas of Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Production and Logistics. This text shows the importance of Statistics as a decision support tool in management decision making. Emphasis is therefore placed on (i) the data requirements for the various techniques and issues of data quality; (ii) identifying likely application areas through numerous illustrative examples; (iii) noting the limitations of techniques for decision analysis, and, of great importance, (iv) the valid management interpretation of statistical findings. The text is divided into three major sections -- exploratory data analysis, statistical inferences, and statistical modelling -- with each section focusing on a different role of Statistics as a decision support tool. Overall, the primary focus of the text is to empower students of management with statistical decision making skills so that they become active participants rather than passive observers in business situations where statistical findings are reported and discussed as part of a management decision making process. A new feature of this edition is the use of computer software such as Excel to perform statistical analysis. This text illustrates Excel's statistical capabilities through numerous worked examples. It also gives management students the opportunity to develop hands-on familiarisation with Excel's statistical capabilities by applying them to datasets of business problems which are available on the accompanying CD. By having a working knowledge of Excel's statistical capabilities, managers can design and conduct their own statistical analysis, thus building confidence in their use of statistical analysis and findings. The text assumes only a basic level of mathematical ability. Each statistical technique is developed through business-related worked illustrations. In this way, a student can readily grasp the basic concept of the technique as well as see how it would apply in practice. This approach emphasises the strong business application orientation of the text, hence its carefully chosen title of Applied Business Statistics. { 625pp, 170x245mm, January 2007; PB, £30.99, 0702172863:9780702172861 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | CAPE LANDSCAPES : Sir John Herschel's Sketches 1834-1838: Standard Edition [Brian Warner] In 1834, Sir John Herschel, perhaps the most celebrated astronomer of his time, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope to spend four years observing the southern sky. Among his many other talents he was an accomplished artist, skilled in the use of an optical device known as a camera lucida. During these four years Herschel produced more than a hundred exquisite landscape sketches, some depicting the Feldhausen estate in the suburb of Wynberg, where he and his family lived, others meticulously recording scenes that enlivened his trips to Cape Point, to Table Mountain, to Hout Bay and to places in the farther reaches. Among the latter were Caledon, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. These Herschel landscape drawings are an almost unmatched contribution to the artistic and historical record of the Cape in the early nineteenth century. They are reproduced in this book, together with a narrative text and background material that firmly set the illustrations in their social and geographical context. The result is an evocative picture of the Cape Peninsula and its environs at a time when they were still largely wild. { 180pp, 300x290mm, January 2006; HB, £77.99, 1919713751:9781919713755 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS : An International Perspective [M R Howe] Most accounting examinations, whether at university or professional level, expect candidates to be conversant with the accounting requirements of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). The main reason for this is the internationalisation of business operations, as a result of which, it has increasingly become necessary to harmonise international accounting practices. The other reason appears to be linked to an increasing world-wide use of International Financial Reporting Standards, particularly in countries where no indigenous standards exist, for example, in most developing countries. This book deals with the financial accounting techniques required to compile consolidated financial statements covering the operations of an enterprise which, at the end of its financial year, has a subsidiary or subsidiaries under its control and also those with both subsidiaries and associated companies. These techniques are discussed and demonstrated in the light of the requirements of the relevant international accounting standards. These are IAS27 (revised 2003), IFRS3 and IAS28 (revised 2003). { 258pp, 170x245mm, January 2005; PB, £25.99, 070217162X:9780702171628 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | GENDER OF PYSCHOLOGY [Floretta Boonzaier, Peace Kiguwa & Tamara Shefer] "Gender of Psychology" is a South African based textbook looking at the relationship between gender and psychology. Psychology as a discipline has historically been criticised for perpetuating sexism, reproducing gender inequality and neglecting women's and other marginalised perspectives. There has been an increasing attempt internationally to provide a critical gender analysis of the discipline and practice, and to theorise the contributions that psychology may indeed make to addressing such issues. This collection of chapters, contextualised within contemporary South Africa, attempts to span the diversity of psychological knowledge and practice through the lens of gender. The text is divided into three broad key sections. The first is a section entitled (Re)production of knowledge in psychology. It includes chapters that focus on gendered issues relating to knowledge production, research, authorship and publishing in psychology. The second section is entitled De/re-constructing psychological knowledge about gender. This section addresses key areas of psychology that have theorised and researched gender issues, critically reflecting on the ways in which psychology has set itself up as an authority on issues of gender and sexuality -- frequently to the detriment of women and other gender/sexual minorities. The final section looks at some of the professional areas of psychology, critically assessing the extent to which the applied aspects of psychology are sensitive to gender difference, as well as exploring the ways in which psychology has tended to reproduce relations of power and control and perpetuate normative, oppressive practices with respect to gender, sex and sexuality. Written in an accessible and interactive format, the text should stimulate critical and applied thinking. { 355pp, 180x260mm, January 2007; PB, £36.00, 1919713921:9781919713922 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |
![]() | GENDER, LAW & JUSTICE [Elsje Bonthuys & Catherine Albertyn] Feminist lawyers have long been engaged in critiquing the gendered nature of South African law. This project has increased in importance and scope as a result of the centrality of gender equality, as a value and a substantive right, in the South African Constitution. Gender, Law and Justice provides both theoretical and practical tools to enable academic and practising lawyers to apply concepts of gender equality to the law. It introduces readers to basic feminist concepts and arguments, and to a wealth of local, comparative and international material on gender and the law. It also illustrates how the law may be shaped to transform the social, cultural and economic conditions of women's lives in South Africa, at the same time as it acknowledges the limits of legal strategies for change. This book has three main objectives. The first is to identify the different positions of women in South Africa and to examine the disparate impact of the legal system on their lives. Secondly, it aims to expose the gender bias in legal concepts and in the content and application of legal rules. Thirdly, it suggests changes to the law, and evaluates those changes that have already occurred, with a view to developing the law so that it is better able to ensure justice and meet the diverse needs of women in South Africa. { 424pp, 170x245mm, January 2007; PB, £36.50, 0702176648:9780702176647 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS : A Perpetual Challenge? [Marie Huchzermeyer & Aly Karam (eds)] The United Nations Millennium Development Declaration of 2000 has brought informal settlements, or 'slums' as they are often referred to, squarely onto national and international development agendas. One of the Millennium Development Goals is to significantly improve, by 2020, the lives of 100 million slum dwellers globally. Country governments have responded varyingly to this challenge. A group of colleagues in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa recognised this challenge, and embarked on a two-year collaborative research project on informal settlement policy, funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF). This project sought to bring international experience into the changing policy environment in South Africa, and included four workshops in Johannesburg involving local, provincial and national government, policy makers, NGOs and international scholars. This book comprises a selection of the November 2004 workshop papers and was made possible by generous funding from CORDAID. Informal settlements focuses on the complex challenges faced by those living in informal settlements as well as by local and national authorities around the world seeking to alleviate this situation. It draws on examples from South Africa, Swaziland, Angola, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Thailand and Brazil. This book will be indispensable to those working in NGOs, development agencies and local, provincial and national government in the field of land policy, housing and urban management. Students and academics in Development Studies, Urban and Development Planning, Town and Regional Planning, Housing, Land Management, Urban Sociology, Urban Geography, Geography, Town & Regional Planning, Public Policy and Public Management should equally find this text useful. Addressing the housing problem has been one of the key concerns in post-apartheid South Africa, and the last two years have seen a major shift from the policy, which was in place during the first ten years of democracy. The upgrading of informal settlements comes as a new addition in the revised housing policy, at a time when international bodies have prioritised the improvement of the lives of slum dwellers. The subject matter of this book is therefore highly topical, and is likely to be of interest to a wide audience both within South Africa and elsewhere. The continuing challenge of informal settlements: An introduction; Policy, data and civil society: Reflections on South African challenges through an international review; The new instrument for upgrading informal settlements in South Africa: Contributions and constraints; Principles, bases and challenges of the National Programme to Support Sustainable Urban Land Regularisation in Brazil; Informal settlements: Infernal and eternal? The role of research in policy advocacy and urban informal settlements in Angola; Understanding the complexities of informal settlements: Insights from Cape Town; Clash of civilisations: Reflections on the problems of upgrading informal settlements in Ethiopia, Kenya, Swaziland and Zambia; An HIV and Aids lens for informal settlement policy and practice in South Africa; Barking dogs and building bridges: A contribution to making sense of Hernando de Soto's ideas in the South African context; Forced evictions, development and the need for community-based, locally appropriate alternatives: Lessons and challenges from South Africa, Ghana and Thailand; Market-driven evictions and displacements: Implications for the perpetuation of informal settlements in developing cities ; Informal settlement upgrading in Cape Town: Challenges, constraints and contradictions within local government; Local governance and social conflict: Implications for piloting South Africa's new housing plan in Cape Town's informal settlements; The local government challenge of healthy development in informal settlements especially in a time of HIV/AIDS; Slum upgrading in the complex context of policy change: The case of Nairobi. { 318pp, 170x245mm, January 2006; PB, £20.00, 1919713948:9781919713946 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | INTERNATIONAL LAW : A South African Perspective: 3rd Edition [John Dugard] The world has experienced traumatic events and witnessed dramatic changes since the appearance of the second edition of this book. The attack on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001, followed by the United States intervention in Afghanistan, and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, have challenged the foundations of the international order. The establishment of the African Union and the creation of the International Criminal Court have added two important new institutions to international life. International law has addressed these developments by adjusting old and creating new rules. Less spectacularly, international law has undergone major changes in the fields of state responsibility, immunities, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. In South Africa, statutes and judicial decisions have emphasised the unity of international law and municipal law. The third edition of this book addresses these developments and integrates them into the body of established international law. Most treatises on international law approach the subject from some national perspective. This book follows this course. International and South African sources of law are invoked to provide both a picture of international law and a study of international law as applied in South African municipal law. The book is intended for law students, legal practitioners and those engaged in the study and practice of foreign relations. { 582pp, 170x240mm, December 2005; PB, £35.00, 0702171212:9780702171215 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | JUTA'S CLINICAL GUIDE FOR MIDWIVES [Dr Diana Du Plessis] Skilled care during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period is vital to the survival and health of mothers and new-borns. In fact, the wellbeing of a society is represented by the health of mothers, new-borns and children. To this end, the United Nations has determined that the number of births assisted by a skilled attendant is one of the indicators of progress in a country. This is a user-friendly, highly illustrated clinical manual developed to provide all midwives with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills. For ease of use, the book has been split into three parts: the antenatal months, the second and third stages of labour, and the postnatal period. These parts are split into modules, each one covering a specific topic, which contain: step-by-step instructions for carrying out procedures, along with a rationale for each; clinical tips drawn from years of midwifery experience; clear illustrations to demonstrate difficult procedures or concepts. The guide has been created to assist students of midwifery and as a continuing education resource for practising midwives, tutors and medical students. ![]() | MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES : A Contemporary Edition for Africa [P J Smit & J G de J Cronje] Book & CD. To improve on an award-winning book poses a major challenge to its authors. The authors of this book took the challenge head-on by conducting a major research study to determine what exactly the outcomes are that managers at different levels must deliver in contemporary organisations in South Africa, and the rest of Africa. The findings of this study, which dealt with current and near-future management issues, as well as classical and contemporary thinking about management, were used as the blueprint for the updating of this book. After placing management in context, the authors deal with the knowledge, skills and dispositions required of managers to perform the management functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling in a volatile business world. Examples of how the functions are applied in practice are cited throughout the book. These examples refer mainly to South African organisations and situations that managers in South Africa, and Africa, have to deal with to create and sustain a competitive advantage for their organisations. The book endeavours to break down the silo effect of seeing the management functions as separate activities. This is done by continuously placing the management function at hand in a bigger context. This enables learners of management to assess the implications of management decisions on different people, processes, systems and so on that make up the organisation. { 468pp, 170x245mm, January 2007; PB, £38.99, 0702172952:9780702172953 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |

![]() | RETHINKING TRUTH : 2nd Edition [Philip Higgs & Jane Smith] What is truth? Can it be discovered objectively, as science claims? Or is truth a created, highly contested and changing entity, lasting but a moment? Is there more than one truth? Do we pursue it or does it pursue us? People have sacrificed their lives for it. What is it about truth that can elicit such a reaction? Think about it: "The truth or truths we accept determine what our lives are and will be." The contemporary world is full of contradictions. Starvation, Aids, illiteracy and serial killings exist alongside sophisticated digital technology, the human genome project, the money markets of Wall Street and Tokyo, and unsurpassed wealth. These realities and the human beings who create and inhabit these realities are driven by certain notions of truth. Our own reality -- whatever that is, and whatever form it takes -- is not a given. It is based on certain notions of truth. If we rethink our truth, we alter our reality. This means that we can change the way we live and relate to the world. In this interactive, accessible text, the authors examine the truth propounded by a range of philosophies, as well as their practical applications, and give their own responses to the issues raised. { 139pp, 180x260mm, January 2006; PB, £20.00, 0702172626:9780702172625 , Juta Publishing (Academic) } |
