ARTFUL CREATION : Learning-Tales of Arts-in-Business [Lotte Darsø] This is about social innovation and organisational transformation through the Arts. It presents live artists working in business settings as catalysts for change. The book primarily proposes two approaches for Arts-in-Business: 1) The Arts applied as an instrument for teambuilding, communication training, leadership development, problem-solving and innovation. 2) The Arts integrated as a strategic process of organisational transformation. The message of the book is not to promote a new magical instrument, a new 'quick fix' for business. It is an attempt to show the great potential of 'Artful Creation’; and at the same time point out that the birth of a new paradigm offers promising prospects for the future of business and society. The book offers ground-breaking ideas, new methods, inspiration and concrete recommendations. { 213pp, 210x240mm, December 2004; PB, £31.99, 8759311096:9788759311097 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
CONCEPT OF THE NETWORK SOCIETY : Post-Ontological Reflections [Niels Lehmann, Lars Qvortrup & Bo Kampmann Walther (eds)] Our current society has been called a 'network society'. But what lies behind this name? Has society changed, or has our observation of society? There can hardly be any doubt that the conditions for describing the world have changed. Since the turn of the 20th century, at least, we have known that there is no point for observing the world that lies outside the world. This book reflects the consequences of these conditions for observing society. What significance does the 'loss' of metaphysical guarantees have for the description and understanding of the society in which we live and for the epistemological tools at our disposal? The book is a sociological, philosophical and aesthetical study of what 'lies behind' the idea of calling present-day society a 'network society'. { 210pp, 155x230mm, December 2007; PB, £32.00, 8759311894:9788759311899 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
CORPORATE VALUES & RESPONSIBILITY : The Case of Denmark [Mette Morsing & Christina Thyssen (eds)] Provides a flavour of the Danish landscape when it comes to corporate values and social responsibility. The ambition is to indicate the status of the Danish corporate agenda from political, corporate, academic and media perspectives. Many Danish companies regard values and social responsibility as a 'normal' element of their corporate strategy. Denmark is part of an international movement towards combining economic and social values. Danish companies have reached far on these issues. The 26 authors of this book reflect this diversity. One of them is Professor Peter Pruzan. He has been an inspiration, collaborator and critical voice for Danish and international companies, NGOs, academics and the media throughout the last 20 years on issues of corporate values and responsibility. This book is written in honour of Peter. Managers and students of contemporary business will find inspiration in company cases, analytical models and critical reflections on the Case of Denmark on issues of values and social responsibility. { 307pp, 155x230mm, October 2005; HB, £30.00, 8759310839:9788759310830 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
DIGITAL GOVERNANCE://NETWORKED SOCIETIES : Creating Authority, Community & Identity in a Globalized World [Hans Krause Hansen & Jens Hoff (eds)] This volume explores the role of the Internet in the creation and reconfiguration of political authority, community and identity in a globalising world. A string of case studies demonstrates how the Internet and connectivity facilitate the creation of political authorities 'within' and 'beyond' the nation state, and how it lies at the core of the formation of automated forms of power and the emergence of a plethora of communities with global reach and outlook, affecting identity formation processes and social dynamics. These developments have important repercussions for politics and democracy. Politics in the Information Age becomes a 'politics of presence' and a 'politics of becoming', as expressed through multiple practices, connections and organisational forms, as well as the complex formation of political identities. In such a set-up, democracy comes to depend more on ethics and less on procedures. This volume lays the foundation for further work on politics and democracy in the Information Age. { 349pp, 155x230mm, December 2006; PB, £40.00, 8759311452:9788759311455 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
EGGS & LARVAE OF NORTH SEA FISHES [Peter Munk & Jørgen Nielsen] This book presents the early stages of about hundred common fishes in a standardised, illustrative layout, affording effective guidance to the investigation and identification of these stages. Emphasis is put on the illustration by clear figures and on the precision of main diagnostic characters. Each species is presented in a standard two-paged format with description of development and corresponding figures of five characteristic stages; and with additional paragraphs which describe the adult characters and biology and specify the distinct characters of the larva. The series of identification sheets is introduced by a set of short, reviewing chapters, emphasising the research history and methods, and the early stage morphology and ecology. Due to their great importance in the plankton ecosystem and in fish stock replenishment, the fish eggs and larvae attract interest from a wide range of researchers. This book will be a valuable tool to the scientist and technician who need to make correct identification of collected fish larvae, and want additional information on the early development of the species. { 214pp, 155x230mm, July 2007; HB, £52.50, 8791319242:9788791319242 , Samfundslitteratur Press (biofolia) }
INTERFACE://CULTURE : The World Wide Web as Political Resource & Aesthetic Form [Klaus Bruhn Jensen (ed)] In less than ten years, the world wide web has become part of everyday life. During the 1990s, it was often perceived as a possible source of dramatic social change for business, politics, and the arts. Now, it is increasingly clear that the web has itself been shaped by the existing institutions of society -- businesses, parliaments, schools, families -- even while challenging some of their structures and premises. This volume takes stock of the web, a decade after its popular breakthrough. The articles examine websites as interfaces to contemporary culture and as resources for political participation. Following accounts of the history of computers and the web, the volume presents concrete analyses of how politicians, corporations, activists, cultural institutions, and media weave the web for the general public. { 254pp, 155x230mm, January 2005; PB, £35.00, 8759311460:9788759311462 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
INTRODUCTION TO FISH PARASITOLOGICAL METHOS : Classical & Molecular Techniques [Kurt Buchmann] Fish parasites are becoming an increasing problem due to increased focus on aquaculture, fisheries, fish health and food hygienic aspects of fish in general. This book presents a range of classical and modern methods in fish parasitology. Thus, it is described how the reader should collect the fish hosts, isolate the parasites, prepare the material and identify the organisms. This book can be used as a handbook and as a laboratory manual by students of courses in aquaculture, fish health, fish parasitology, general parasitology, fisheries ecology and zoology. { 130pp, 155x230mm, August 2007; PB, £17.00, 8791319390:9788791319396 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
INTRODUCTION TO VETERINARY EPIDEMIOLOGY : Internationally Reviewed [Hans Houe, K Annette, J Ersbøll & Nils Toft (eds)] This book provides the basics of veterinary epidemiology to the undergraduate and graduate students. The outline of the book follows the necessary steps involved in planning, conducting and analysing an epidemiological study. These steps include establishing the objective and hypothesis, defining risk factors and outcome, selecting an appropriate study design, determining relevant measures of disease frequency, association and effect, sample size considerations, conducting the study, managing the data in databases and finally analysing the data. The process takes off in the concepts and theories that form the basis of veterinary epidemiology and includes a solid introduction to data with respect to nature, management and analysis. The examples used to illustrate the different elements of data analysis are given in appendices as SAS code and R code to help getting started on the data analysis. The book is a collaboration between authors with solid backgrounds within veterinary, mathematical, statistical and computer sciences. They have years of experience in teaching at the undergraduate as well as graduate and postgraduate level. Each chapter has been reviewed by leading international veterinary epidemiologists. { 398pp, 170x240mm, December 2004; PB, £33.50, 8791319218:9788791319211 , Samfundslitteratur Press (Biofolia) }
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION & LEARNING : E-Learning in the Knowledge Society [Lars Qvortrup] Present-day society is often referred to as a knowledge society. But how can knowledge be defined and what role does it play, along with the related or connected concepts of learning and media/ICT? In what sense does learning lead to knowledge, what forms of learning are adequate in the so-called knowledge society, and how are appropriate forms of learning underpinned? How should media be conceptualised, and what is the role of the media, not least digital media, i.e. ICT, in society? These are the basic questions to which this book is devoted. { October 2006; PB, £20.99, 8759312491:9788759312490 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
MOVING MEDIA STUDIES : Remediation Revisited [Heidi Philipsen & Lars Qvortrup (eds)] Sometimes, basic questions must be raised, and this is what this book does: What do we understand by a "medium"? How do we observe "communication"? What does it mean to say that communication is mediated? How should we interpret the idea of immediacy? The background for raising these questions is this important book which was published by Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin in 1999. Although it was published only a few years ago, revisions -- or, at least, reconsiderations -- already seem to be needed. The chapters represent a wide spectrum of different cases and media -- from television to computer, film and mobile phone. The main effort of the book is to put concepts like hypermediacy, immediacy, remediation, communication and the desire for the real into debate and practice. In nine articles, the last one written by Bolter himself, the writers are discussing and reconsidering these fundamental concepts. { 213pp, 155x230mm, August 2007; PB, £26.00, 8759312610:9788759312612 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
NARRATIVE LEARNING & CULTURE [Jerome Bruner, Carol Fleisher Feldman, Mads Hermansen & Jan Molin] In this book four articles present the outcome of an important and fruitful meeting between Danish and American scientists. During the conference, "Culture, Narrative and Mind", held at Copenhagen Business School in June 2005. Nearly 350 participants experienced the unequalled psychologist, Jerome Bruner, the grand old man who has worked out a sovereign overview of the developments in psychology since the 1940s. The articles are written on the basis of lectures from the conference. { 71pp, 150x210mm, October 2006; PB, £19.99, 8776830128:9788776830120 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
NEW PUBLICS WITH/OUT DEMOCRACY [Henrik Bang & Anders Esmark (eds)] The public sphere is normally considered to be a forum for democratic deliberation. It can serve many other uses, however, such as an arena for strategic communication, a space for identity formation or a 'showcase' for celebrities. By bringing together researchers from political science, public administration, sociology and media studies, this book presents a comprehensive perspective on the transformation of the public sphere in the emerging network society. The book presents a series of theoretical and empirical contributions concerning current changes in political communication, participation, identity and the role of the media and journalists. Within a common framework of analysis, the individual chapters in the book cover a wide range of issues concerning the way political institutions, citizens, NGOs, firms and not least the media and journalists engage the public sphere, such as post-ideological politics, governance by performance and evaluation, transnationalisation, branding, Internet use and journalistic praxis. Although the book clearly suggests that the public sphere is an increasingly important medium of politically active and informed agents, it also insists that it proceeds far beyond the democratic publics of parliament and citizens in civil society. { 380pp, 155x235mm, December 2007; PB, £40.00, 8759311495:9788759311493 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
STRATEGIC NETWORKING IN SMALL HIGH TECH FIRMS [Mette Mønsted] The cocktail of small firms and high technology creates a high level of uncertainty, which is one of the most dominant characteristics of high technology development and the conditions for management. 'Strategic Networking in Small High Tech Firms' is concerned with strategic management of knowledge in small firms and in networks of high tech firms. The focus is on innovation and advanced high technology, leading to problems of handling uncertainty at the boundaries of knowledge. Small firms have to depend on alliances and networks as to create resources for innovative projects. Strategic networking is based on an understanding of the mechanisms of network for organising, and a new perspective on management. Knowledge management is described as a social construction of management or as management of what we do not know. Small firms play an important role in Denmark, primarily due to the relatively few large firms in the country. Instead of focusing on the weaknesses of being small, the study has focused on how small firms develop platforms for management beyond the firm. Small firms form an interesting base for understanding the process of building networking strategies for innovation management under high levels of uncertainty, as they have to build power bases and create management as a social construction in a space between firms. The focus is on how small firm managers create a platform for manoeuvring and adapting to the conditions of the environment through various forms of collaboration and strategic use of networks. { 312pp, 155x230mm, October 2005; PB, £28.00, 8759310537:9788759310533 , Samfundslitteratur Press }
