AFTER THE WAR IN IRAQ : Defining the New Strategic Balance [Shai Feldman (ed)] Focusing on the different dimensions to the war in Iraq launched in March 2003 by the United States, the essays here present concise and penetrating analyses, and explore the major implications of the war and their strategic, political and military contexts. Researchers from the Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, experts in international relations, political science, strategic studies and political psychology, present an insightful picture of the war. The book contains a chronology surveying the International Inspection Regime in Iraq, 1991-2003, and the full text of 'The National Security Strategy of the United States of America', which should be regarded as the basis of the Bush administration's strategic rationale for the war in Iraq. REVIEW: "A timely collection of essays generated by a series of brainstorming sessions at the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies on the implications of the war in Iraq as seen from various disciplinary angles. The collection is divided into two parts, the first deals with the international context, the second, the impact on the region, especially Israel." -- The International Spectator. "Included here are essays on regional implications of the war; the extent to which the war has affected the Israeli-Palestinian peace; weapons of mass destruction; how the war has affected the strategic balance in the region; and finally Israel's home front defense policy and implications for the future. An excellent book... Highly recommended." -- Choice { 208pp, 180x260mm, January 2003; PB, £16.95, 1903900751:9781903900758 / HB, £45.00, 1903900743:9781903900741 , Sussex Academic Press }
ALIEN IMMIGRANTS TO ENGLAND, 1337-1750 : A Document History [N Goose & L Luu (eds)] There is a wealth of documentary material available, both published and unpublished, that reflects the existence and experiences of immigrant communities in late Medieval and early modern England. The great majority of the published material is, however, difficult to access, while the unpublished material is widely scattered among national and local record repositories. This volume presents the first full collection of documentary evidence relating to immigrants to England ever to be published, and as such will provide scholars and students with an invaluable resource. The present volume is the first of a proposed three-volume series, which will take alien immigration up to the present day, commences with the first concerted attempts to attract foreign immigrants made in the reign of Edward III, and closes at the end of the early modern period (c.1750), coinciding with a period that has been widely regarded as a crucial one in the forging of a new sense of national identity. Topics covered include the foundations of immigrant communities, legal and economic status, wealth and poverty, economic and cultural impacts, popular and elite reactions, assimilation, the stranger churches and their discipline, and international connections. Each chapter is introduced by a scholarly appraisal of the value and implications of the documents that it includes. { 96pp, September 2009; HB, £55.00, 1903900514:9781903900512 , Sussex Academic Press }
AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM : The Effects of Plenty on the American Experience [Arnon Gutfeld] In general, all societies have evolved from a background in which people were many and resources were few. Thus the creation of their ideas, values, and institutions needed to adjust to that reality. The unique history of the United States, however, makes it an exception. There people were few but resources were endless. Thus, American traditions, values, ideas, and institutions which were of European origin had to undergo major transformations. The reality of plenty is thus the key to understanding the uniqueness of American civilization. REVIEW: "A fresh intellectual history of the role of the frontier in the American national experience... An excellent analyis of the positive and dark sides of the American national experience." -- American Studies (University of Kansas and the Mid-American Studies Association). "...makes a compelling argument that displays a deep, highly original understanding of the historical myth and reality of the American frontier... Throughout his book, Gutfeld argues convincingly that ‘plenty' and the ‘frontier' have been weighty and malleable concepts in American history. Yet the ideas of available plenitude and an open frontier also entailed devastating practical consequences. Despite so much tragic history and such harsh contemporary reality, these ideas still flourish today. Insistent ahistoricism also is a key element of American theory and practice. Americans even seem inclined to repeat past mistakes as exactly as possible, rather than to learn much from them. Though one should not bet on the power of any book to change deep-rooted American behavioral patterns, American Exceptionalism clearly offers an insightful, important corrective." -- From the Foreword by Avi Soifer, Boston College Law School, Massachusetts. { 256pp, 155x230mm, January 2002; HB, £49.95, 1903900085:9781903900086 , Sussex Academic Press }

ARAB POLITICAL DEMOGRAPHY, VOLUME 1 : Population Growth & Natalist Policies [Onn Winckler] Written specifically for classroom and student use, with more than 35 tables and figures, this book sets out the political demographic of the Arab countries by: Examining the sources for demographic research of the Arab countries; Explaining the nature of the population growth in the Arab countries in comparison with other developing countries world-wide; Examining the development of structural unemployment in the non oil-based and oil-based Arab countries since the mid-1980s, and investigating the natal policies of both the oil and the non-oil Arab countries, and attempting to answer the crucial question of why some Arab countries succeed more than others in implementing fertility decline. A concluding chapter examines the political dilemmas arising from the different demographies and economies in the Arab states. During the 20th century, worldwide population increased more rapidly than ever before, with the world’s population amounting to 6.1 billion by the year 2000. The main contributors to the rapid worldwide population growth were the developing countries, including the Arab countries. During the second half of the 20th century, the demographic issue became the most acute socio-economic problem of the non-oil Arab countries, bringing with it a variety of political implications, both internal and external. REVIEW: "Onn Winckler has been for a number of years a leading light in the field of demographic studies on particular Arab countries; with Arab Political Demography, Winckler integrates new research with his already existing compendium of knowledge on the subject to produce an outstanding and timely examination of an important aspect of development in the Arab world." -- David W. Lesch, Professor of Middle East History, Trinity University. "Fresh, focused, and provocative, Arab Political Demography reaffirms Winckler’s reputation as the most reliable and engaging writer on demographic and population policies in the Middle East. This book is must reading for scholars and policy makers concerned with the Middle East, and offers a model for regional demographic studies elsewhere." -- Dale F. Eickelman, Dartmouth College,s coauthor (with James Piscatori) of Muslim Politics (2nd edition, 2004). " Winckler expertly shows how natalist and macroeconomic policies need to go hand-in-hand if Arab countries ever hope to emerge from their underdeveloped status, and he offers an invaluable political, cultural and economic history of how the Arab demographic dilemma reached this point." -- David W. ARISTOCRATIC UNIVERSE OF KAREN BLIXEN : Destiny & the Denial of Fate [F Leander Hansen] Karen Blixen's works are explored in the light of a passionate insistence on living out a double nature of the divine and the demonic. The 'aristocratic' is examined as her depiction of a conduct of life that is faithful to destiny: the aristocratic viewpoint is in tune with eternity, and places no obstructive morality between self and life. Vitality has its source in direct access to the ocean of inexhaustible opportunities with which life presents us. The 'world' of Africa, for example, plays a key role as the consummate illustration of an aristocratic culture. The aesthetic guidelines for literary form (as well as art) as advocated by KB are discussed, and her view of art is similarly defined and explained as 'aristocratic'. Her private correspondence (including the recently published Karen Blixen in Denmark: Letters, 1931-62) is drawn upon to shed new light on her life and work. { 196pp, 155x230mm, June 2003; PB, £14.95, 1903900336:9781903900338 / HB, £35.00, 1903900328:9781903900321 , Sussex Academic Press }
ARISTOTLE & MODERNISM : Aesthetic Affinities of T S Eliot, Wallace Stevens & Virginia Woolf [Edna Rosenthal] Examines literary modernism in its relation to the history of criticism by analysing the role of Aristotelian principles, primarily the notion of formal affectivism, in the critical writings of these three modernists who have invariably been thought to uphold incompatible aesthetic beliefs: whereas Eliot saw himself as a classicist modernist, Stevens and Woolf shared a marked anti-classicist stance. Despite their initially incompatible attitudes to literary history and criticism, this study discloses their convergence on the Aristotelian notion of formal affectivism, demonstrated through specific conceptual shifts. The main feature of the book is its originality of approach, which seeks a 'diachronic' solution to a 'synchronic' problem -- the debate about the Modern, reflected in the claims and counterclaims made by the modernists themselves and by subsequent literary critics and theorists. This methodology was largely dictated by the nature of the subject: the adversarial critical orientation of three modernists, who have never been studied as a group before, and the attempt to reconcile their differences by reconfiguring them in terms of the Aristotelian critical tradition. The author demonstrates conclusively how Eliot incorporated central Aristotelian dramatic principles into his view of literary history and criticism, and, similarly, how both Stevens and Woolf, through historically determined conceptual shifts, endorse and use formal affectivism and dramatic criteria, which, as may be expected, they almost never refer back to Aristotle or to his foremost modernist defender, Eliot. { 152pp, 152x229mm, May 2008; HB, £55.00, 1845191714:9781845191719 , Sussex Academic Press }
ARMS CONTROL IN THE MIDDLE EAST : Cooperative Security Dialogue, & Regional Constraints [Emily B Landau] This is the story of a regional process in the making: from the very concept of arms control as applied to the region, through the innovative regional forum and format for discussion that was devised for the talks, to the dynamics of the talks and the question of Egypt’s position within this novel regional setting. The result was that what seemed at the outset to be a most likely unpromising forum became the setting of unprecedented regional dynamics. { 253pp, 152x229mm, August 2006; HB, £55.00, 1845190289:9781845190286 , Sussex Academic Press }
ARMS TRANSFERS TO ISRAEL : The Strategic Logic Behind American Military Assistance [David Rodman] This book dispels two common myths about the American-Israeli patron-client relationship -- that arms transfers to Israel have been motivated by American domestic politics rather than national interests and that these arms transfers have come without any political strings attached to them. The first part of the book describes and analyses the institutionalisation of the American-Israeli arms pipeline during the Johnson administration, demonstrating conclusively in the process that arms transfers to the Jewish state were based primarily on American national interests. The second part of the book consists of four case studies that clearly reveal that American arms transfers to Israel, whether in wartime or in peacetime, have always come with a diplomatic price tag attached to them. The book is based largely on American government documents from the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, from the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library, and from the United States National Archives. { 129pp, 152x229mm, March 2007; HB, £35.00, 1845191781:9781845191788 , Sussex Academic Press }
ART, CRIME & MADNESS : Gesualdo, Carravagio, Genet, Van Gogh, Artaud [Shlomo Giora Shoham] Art, Crime and Madness explores the relationship between creative innovation, deviance and morbidity. To innovate, one has to be able to view the medium and the object of creativity in a different, hitherto unexplored manner. The essence of art is creative innovation, coupled with an ability, in varying degrees, to transcend the boundaries of consciousness. But this 'ability' is also the prerogative of the mentally deranged. Likewise, the criminal and the deviant are more likely to transcend normative barriers while creating, hence the wide range of criminal and deviant behaviour in society. Although the inverse hypothesis does not hold -- the mere existence of deviance or morbidity does not predispose the individual to creativity -- nevertheless criminal and mad behaviour are often very innovative. This thesis is illustrated by historical case histories of creative deviance and genius madness, and contemporary observations. The painter Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio killed a man while still a teenager, and a second victim during a ball game. In his lifetime he was considered degenerate, but today he is considered the greatest painter of the Italian Settecento, and his portrait adorns the Hundred-Thousand Lira note. Jean Genet the homosexual thief was born out of wedlock and as a teenager he transgressed almost all the paragraphs of the French criminal code. But he became a famous French playwright, the mouthpiece for criminals and deviants. His plays built up a philosophical apology for the raison d'être of the criminal group. REVIEW: "Rich in detail and psychocultural analysis this book will take its place beside Freud's Moses and other classics of art interpretation..." -- Graeme R Newman, Professor, School of Criminal Justice. "Broad intellectual range, curiosity, deep and profound knowledge and authenticity. The whole spirit of Shlomo Shoham's reasoning is both refreshing and challenging..." -- Dr Manfred Wimmer, Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research. { 209pp, 155x230mm, January 2003; PB, £16.95, 1903900069:9781903900062 / HB, £45.00, 1903900050:9781903900055 , Sussex Academic Press }
ASAD IN SEARCH OF LEGITIMACY : Message & Rhetoric in the Syrian Press Under Hafiz & Bashar [Mordechai Kedar] The Syrian regime, ruled by the Ba'th socialist party and headed by presidents from the ‘Alawi minority, faces problems of legitimacy vis-à-vis its people, which it tackles through powerful security organizations and the state media. The government media machine exists to express the regime's viewpoint in both local and external spheres, and to promote acceptance of the legitimacy of Asad’s presidency and government. The media also attempts to mobilize the masses to act in the service of the state by disseminating information which reflects Asad's position on current issues. The organs of the regime -- army, party, security services, national and local authorities -- are proclaimed as acting by order of the president. While personal commitment to the legitimacy of Hafiz al-Asad is the principal 'article of faith', this message is supported by complementary messages -- Asad being true to the Moslem faith; Asad as historic leader; Asad as the focus of identity of all Syrian citizens; the 'crimes' of the Moslem Brotherhood, etc. -- and vociferous political discourse. REVIEW: "...an outstandingly rich study of the way the Syrian Ba‘th regime under Hafiz al-Asad used the Syrian media and other official information services in his search for legitimacy...This comprehensive study, based on a wealth of primary Arabic sources and written by an authority in Arabic language studies, should become a model for the analytic and systematic treatment of official rhetoric and regime-media/public relations in authoritarian regimes." -- Eyal Zisser, Head of the Department of Middle Eastern and African History, Tel Aviv University. "...the author provides a unique documentation and analysis of the Middle East as seen through the eyes of the Syrian media. Dr. Kedar successfully conveys a true and panoramic picture of Arabian dictatorship. Dictatorship is expertly studied in Asad in Search of Legitimacy - from its causes, to its intricate mechanisms, to its impact on peace, progress, and modernity in the Middle East. BEDOUIN BISHA'H JUSTICE : Ordeal by Fire [Joseph Ginat] Trials by ordeal, a judicial practice in which the guilt or innocence of the accused is determined by subjecting them to a painful task, have taken place from ancient Mesopotamia until the present day. This volume focuses on a special type of ordeal by fire called the bisha‘h ceremony, which originated in Bedouin societies and continues to be practiced in Egypt today. In Bedouin and Arab rural societies, when somebody suspects another person of theft, property damage, murder, manslaughter, illicit sexual relations, rape, or witchcraft, and there are no witness to the crime, this individual can request the suspect or suspects to accompany him to the mubasha', a Bedouin notable who conducts the ordeal by fire. The bisha'h ceremony was previously performed in Jordan and in Saudi Arabia as well as in Egypt. In Jordan, the late King Hussein banned the ordeal by fire in 1976. In Saudi Arabia, the mubasha' died in the late 1980s, without leaving a successor. Today, in Egypt, near Ismaliyya, a mubasha' continues to practice the ceremonial ordeal in which the suspect licks a ladle that is heated to between 600-900 degrees Celsius. If the suspect’s tongue blisters, they are deemed guilty. If the tongue is clear, they are declared innocent. The author observed 169 of such ordeals, many of which are documented and illustrated in this volume. People who take part in the bisha'h ceremony not only come from various regions in Egypt, but also from other North African countries, and from several Middle Eastern countries, including the Gulf States. Most of the cases involve rural peasants rather than Bedouin, but there are also instances where city dwellers take part in the ordeal. { 200pp, 152x229mm, November 2008; HB, £65.00, 1845192699:9781845192693 , Sussex Academic Press }
BELLICOSE DOVE : Claude Brousson & Protestant Resistance to Louis X1V, 1647-1698 [Walter C Utt & Brian E Strayer] 'Bellicose Dove' is the first English biography of the Huguenot lawyer, preacher, diplomat and martyr Claude Brousson for 150 years. It examines his life (1647-98), letters, sermons, books, and the role he played in resisting Louis XIV's persecution of the Huguenots until his death on the scaffold in 1698. Unique features of the book include a detailed examination of biographical details in his letters, analysis of the symbolism in his sermons and books (especially his anti-Catholic rhetoric), the importance of his three missionary journeys into France, and the effectiveness of his international diplomatic efforts in England, Holland, and Prussia. REVIEW: "Utt and Strayer retain the merit of having distanced themselves from a Protestant hagiography that treated Brousson as but a holy martyr above reproach, as one who died heroically for his reformed beliefs. They convincingly reveal a human Brousson more complex than a faultless saint. This book is well worth the attention of serious scholars of seventeenth-century France." -- Seventeenth-Century News. BENJAMIN DISRAELI : The Novel as Political Discourse [Michael Flavin] December 2004 marked the bicentenary of Benjamin Disraeli’s birth. The Novel as Political Discourse examines Disraeli’s novels in order to construct a portrait of the man, his context and enduring reputation. Disraeli’s literary career ran from 1826 to 1880. Within this time he became an M.P., Leader of the Opposition, Chancellor and Prime Minister. His novels can be read as the breeding ground for his ideas, gestated away from the pressure cooker of Parliament. From his first novel, Vivian Grey, about the formation of a new political party, through to the overtly political ‘Young England’ trilogy (named after a faction of the Conservative Party with which Disraeli was aligned) and beyond, Disraeli’s novels expose the development of his thinking while also reflecting the anxieties of his age. This book will appeal to those fascinated by Disraeli and Conservatism and anyone interested in the development of Britain in the Victorian era. The book enhances our understanding of this charismatic figure who continues to cast a formidable shadow across the nation’s politics and culture. REVIEW: "Insightful and thought-provoking, this is a critical commentary which stimulates as much as it informs. Disraeli’s novels are a goldmine that has been neglected for too long, and Michael Flavin’s incisive study provides an indispensable guide." -- Jane Ridley, author of The Young Disraeli. { 221pp, 152x229mm, April 2005; PB, £16.95, 1903900808:9781903900802 / HB, £50.00, 1903900301:9781903900307 , Sussex Academic Press }
BEYOND THE BORDER : Huguenot Goldsmiths in Northern Europe & North America [Tessa Murdoch (ed)] "Beyond the Border" sets the lives and work of Huguenot goldsmiths in the context of the different societies in which they lived and worked. Distinguished international scholars explore the contributions of individual goldsmiths drawing on new research. Michèle Bimbenet Privat examines the lives and work of Huguenot goldsmiths in France during times of tolerance of the Protestant religion in the 16th and 17th centuries. She explains how protestant craftsmen dominated regional centres but found establishing a presence in the metropolis more challenging. The influence of the Louis XIV style was greater on the leading Dutch goldsmiths in the late 17th and 18th centuries. In contrast to London, first generation Huguenot goldsmiths played only a minor role in their adopted cities of The Hague and Amsterdam. Those who settled in Berlin and Kassel, often from Metz in Northern France, made a greater impact through the purity of style in which they continued to work in the 18th century. Those who settled in the English speaking world benefited from ambitious patronage from noble and professional clients. Goldsmiths who settled in the American colonies had more in common stylistically with those who worked in Dublin and Cork. First generation Huguenot goldsmiths in London set the pace for the next generation which produced in Paul de Lamerie one of the most successful craft businesses of his generation. "Beyond the Border" explores the transatlantic links between the Huguenot goldsmiths who settled in Europe and America. { 172pp, 210x300mm, April 2008; HB, £39.95, 1845192621:9781845192624 , Sussex Academic Press }
BEYOND THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF SEX : Understanding the Roots of Partnership Conflict [Margaret Christie-Brown] This book is about partnership problems and the difficulties which come with commitment and marriage. It analyses the origins of those problems, common and less common, and leads the reader along a path from understanding to the possibility of resolution. The author addresses the part played by sexual difficulties, which often arise in long-term relationships but receive little recognition in a society swamped with images of idealised sexuality. Indeed massive exposure to sexual ideals in the media produces an inevitable sense of comparative failure in many people. With divorce now so commonplace, marriage more than ever requires the ‘glue' of sexual satisfaction to heal conflict and keep love viable. The author's approach is to show how satisfaction in a partnership depends on understanding both the emotional intricacies of promising to share a life together, and the way these complex issues affect sexual responses -- and vice versa. Dr Christie-Brown explores the way individuals bring unconscious demands and unrealistic expectations from the past into their partnerships; unless these are understood, conflict can result. A Tug of War model is used to illustrate the various conflicts that engaging with a partner can bring. The book is aimed at the open-minded reader who is prepared to look at their partnership problems in a new light; complex emotional issues are dealt with in an accessible way. It is also an essential tool for counsellors, doctors, social workers and all those involved in psychotherapy; it combines -- in a unique but tried and tested manner -- analytical and behavioural disciplines to produce an effective remedy. REVIEW: "Fully aware of the dimensions and dangers of the partnership and marriage minefield, this eminent and highly experienced therapist expertly elucidates the pleasures and excitements of a healthy and vigorous sexual life, and its contribution to our own personal well being and to the stability of our intimate relationships..." -- Earl Hopper PhD, former President of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy. "Offers an overview of the dimensions and dangers of the partnership and marriage ‘minefield’. The author looks at love and the family, ‘gender dialect’, and fertility and infertility. She concludes with a detailed scheme (involving commitment, planning, and timing) for bringing about an improved sexual experience." -- Choice. { 252pp, 155x230mm, July 2004; PB, £15.95, 184519036X:9781845190361 , Sussex Academic Press }

BRITAIN & THE YEMEN CIVIL WAR, 1962-1965 : Ministers, Mercenaries & Mandarins -- Foreign Policy & the Limits of Covert Action [Clive Jones] Between 1962 and 1965 Britain engaged in covert operations in support of Royalist forces fighting the Egyptian backed Republican regime that had seized power in the Yemeni capital Sana'a in September 1962. Covert action was regarded as a legitimate tool of foreign policy as Britain attempted to secure the future of the newly formed South Arabian Federation against the animus of Nasser. The use of covert action, as well as the quasi approval given to the use of mercenaries to support the Royalist cause, was the inevitable result of policy differences within Whitehall (most notably between the ‘mandarins' of the Colonial Office and the Foreign Office) as well as international constraints imposed upon the UK in the aftermath of the Suez crisis. The book examines the extent to which British policy, while successful in imposing a war of attrition upon Nasser in the Yemen, contributed to the political demise of the very objective covert action was designed to secure: the future stability of the Federation of South Arabia. The study makes extensive use of primary sources in producing the first detailed account of British involvement in the Yemen Civil War, and how the experience shaped British foreign policy. It breaks new ground by analyzing the extent to which Britain came to support the Royalist cause despite public declarations of non-involvement in the Yemen conflict, and details for the first time how London's tacit support for ‘mercenary operations' in the Yemen came to enlist the help of Saudi Arabia and Israel. REVIEW: "...Jones' descriptions of mercenary activities, the machinations of the Saudis and Jordanians, is all derring do and a rattling good yarn. BRITAIN, YUGOSLAVIA & THE MAKING OF THE COLD WAR : Coming to Terms with Tito, 1940-1950: 2nd Revised & Expanded Edition [Ann Lane] In this revised and expanded edition of the book, originally published in 1996, Ann Lane studies Britain's role in the emergence of Tito's Yugoslavia, from the German invasion of 1941 until the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. Former Yugoslavia was in many respects a microcosm of the complexities of cold war politics in Europe. Simultaneously non-aligned yet ideologically committed, by 1950 it had emerged as an anomalous communist state detached from the Soviet bloc, economically dependent on the West and militarily dependent on NATO, yet diplomatically defiant of formal alliance entanglements. These contradictions were the very essence of cold war politics and given Yugoslavia's geo-strategic importance this country came to enjoy an important place as a political actor for the cold war's duration. Drawing on newly available documentary material from the archives of the UK, the US and the countries of the former Soviet bloc, Ann Lane explores Britain's entanglements with Yugoslavia‘s civil war and the way in which this experience shaped British thinking about the onset of the cold war in Europe. BUDDHA IS DEAD : Nietzsche & the Dawn of European Zen [Manu Bazzano] Drawing on Zen as well as on Nietzsche’s thought and its ramifications in and for western culture, this book is a fervent call for a re-visioning of philosophy as vocation. The author is critical of the status quo and committed to intellectual integrity; the result is a creative and adventurous enterprise which is no longer exclusively identified with academia or with the methodology of logic. Filtered through Nietzsche’s hammer -- by which he sounded out gods old and new -- Buddhism in the West can avoid the pitfalls which emerged during its gestation period in the twentieth century: otherworldly spiritualism, conservatism, denial of the body. The philosophy of European Zen advocated by Manu Bazzano in 'Buddha is Dead: Nietzsche and the Dawn of European Zen' is an unconditional affirmation of living and dying to their fullest. It is an extraordinary fertile viewpoint that will be appreciated by all those who are interested in Eastern philosophy and religions, and who seek life-affirming wisdom. REVIEW: “Illuminates the common radicalism, non-conformity and insistence on honesty and integrity that underpin what is most challenging and provocative in the two traditions of Buddhism in general (and Zen Buddhism in particular) and the tradition (or anti-tradition) in Western philosophy that finds its most exultant spokesman in the figure of Friedrich Nietzsche.” -- Stephen Batchelor, author of the bestselling Buddhism Without Beliefs { 261pp, 155x230mm, June 2006; PB, £15.95, 1845191498:9781845191498 , Sussex Academic Press }

CALIFORNIA JOURNAL [Edgar Morin] In 1969, California is not just the new Eldorado: it is the crucible where civilisation is accelerating, self-destructs, and is reborn. It's the probe of Spaceship Earth. The hippy phenomenon, communes, the ecological movement, great collective ceremonies like park-ins and rock concerts, the flourishing of sects ranging from mystics to Marxists, the experience of 'weed' and 'acid', are temporary images and elements of a search for a new truth, a new religion, a new society. Long before it became fashionable for European intellectuals to write about their voyages to the United States, Edgar Morin, one of France's leading intellectual figures and at that time known as a path-breaking and innovative sociologist and researcher of popular culture, recounts the story of his experiences in the cauldron of change that was California, including his encounters with some of the leading minds of that time. The book combines Morin's accounts of his experiences with his own search for answers to fundamental questions about the human condition. For a few months, the author had a profound feeling of being drawn into the heart of the 'great questions', played out personally and societally. The result is an engaging and prophetic work that has as much if not more to offer today than it did when it was first published in French. { 162pp, 152x229mm, May 2008; PB, £17.95, 1845192753:9781845192754 , Sussex Academic Press }
CAMP DAVID SUMMIT -- WHAT WENT WRONG? : Americans, Israelis, & Palestinians Analyze the Failure of the Boldest Attempt Ever to Resolve the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict [Shimon Shamir & Bruce Maddy-Weitzman (eds)] The Camp David Summit of 2000 was a formative event in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian relations. It was the most comprehensive effort ever to resolve a hundred-year conflict. Yet, it not only ended in failure but was immediately followed by the eruption of unprecedented violence. After an message from President Bill Clinton, and introductory chapters by Shimon Shamir, Itamar Rabinovich, Sari Nusseibeh and Martin Indyk, the 27 chapter contributions are divided to: Israeli Negotiators, Palestinian Perspectives, American Participants, the Barak Version and its Critics, the Negotiation Experts, Academic Perspectives, and the Clinton Parameters. CERTAIN SYMPATHY OF SCRIPTURES : Biblical & Quranic [Kenneth Cragg] Can there be genuine ‘sympathy' between the Bible and the Qur'an? Their ‘peoples' have been at odds so long, disputing their texts and discounting their credentials. Scholars from both faiths have contrived intriguing comparison of narratives about Abraham, Joseph or Moses but with little relevance to the contemporary scene and its demand for religious converse and sanity. "A Certain Sympathy of Scriptures" attempts something more central to the essential ‘interest' of both Scriptures, more cogent in this 21st century (the 15th Islam). It is a concern with three shared dimension: The divine will for this cosmos of created order; its entrustment into human hands as creaturely heirs to its order and responsive ‘sciences'; and the discipline of their tenancy and privilege by ‘messengers' and prophethoods disclosing the intention of divine Lordship in the fact of human vocation. These three dimensions are the supreme theme of both Scriptures. This ‘caliphate' of humankind belongs in a now global situation as the abiding reality of Semitic humanism. We are not ‘on our own', but trustees in a sacramental order, neither playthings nor puppets of a bland omnipotence but ‘associates' of the God who willed to create and cared to inform, inspire and invite as such to be. Deep disparities remain between our Scriptures. They have to do with what goes beyond our ‘education', as more than prophethood. They enlarge into all that Jesus fulfilled in Christhood. They involve a truer measure of human perversity and, in turn, a larger expectation concerning the ‘greatness' of God. Yet what divides need not alienate. The mutual ground -- this certain sympathy -- gives hope of wiser recognition of the divine stake in our humanity. REVIEW: "By endeavouring to trace some form of sympathy - rather than pursue an analytical comparison as such - between the Bible and the Qur’an, Cragg offers both a model as well as a resource for the further pursuit of a Christian - Muslim theological dialogue that centres on that point of contact with the divine which both unites and divides Christians and Muslims: revelation, mediated through scriptural text. Such engagement is of vital importance today, and not just in terms of academic interaction." -- Reviews in Religion and Theology. { 144pp, 155x230mm, May 2004; PB, £14.95, 1845190122:9781845190125 , Sussex Academic Press }

CHANTING IN THE HILLSIDES : Nichiren Daishonim Buddhism in Wales & the Borders [Jeaneane Fowler & Merv Fowler] In 1983, a tiny group of people in Cardiff and a married couple in Aberporth West Wales were the only Welsh members of Soka Gakkai International, a Japanese movement based on the beliefs and teachings of the 13th century Buddhist, Nichiren Daishonin. Today, there are hundreds of members in Wales and the Borders. This book examines the history of the movement in these two areas, and draws on original research gleaned from the members themselves. The research elicits facets of their faith, practices, and study, as well as their testimonies to the success of such beliefs and practices in their daily lives. The book combines the twin goals of academic analysis of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin in general with the warmth of its expression in the lives of its adherents in Wales and the Borders. { 272pp, 152x229mm, September 2008; PB, £11.99, 1845192583:9781845192587 , Sussex Academic Press }
CHILD SURVIVORS OF THE HOLOCAUST IN ISRAEL : Social Dynamics & Post-War Experiences -- "Finding Their Voice" [Sharon Kangisser Cohen] This is the first exploration into the experience of child survivors in Israel, focusing on the child survivors’ experience in telling their past to a wider audience and in publicly identifying themselves as Holocaust survivors. Whilst psychological research focuses on survivor’s personal inhibitions and motivations in retelling their past, the book attempts to understand the impact that the post-war environment has had on the individual’s relationship to it. Using a qualitative narrative approach, this study examines the dynamics of 'silence' and 'retelling' in the post-war experience of child survivors. It demonstrates the ways in which social dynamics, as well as internal motivations, had an impact on the extent to which these people were likely to speak publicly about their war-time experience or whether they were more inclined to remain silent. The interviews with survivors are presented 'using their own voice', and can thereby be understood in their own unique context. The result is a unique work that synthesises social science fields as disparate as history and psychology. { 293pp, 152x229mm, August 2005; PB, £16.95, 1845190882:9781845190880 , Sussex Academic Press }
CHINESE IDENTITY IN POST-SUHARTO INDONESIA : Culture, Politics & Media ((Sussex Library of Asian Studies)) [Chang-Yau Hoon] During Suharto's New Order (1966-1998), the ethnic Chinese expanded the nation's economy (and their own wealth), but, paradoxically, were marginalised and discriminated against in all social spheres: culture, language, politics, entrance to state-owned universities, and public service and public employment. Following the fall of Suharto, and the anti-Chinese riots in May 1998, Indonesia underwent a process of 'Reformasi' and democratisation, whereby for the first time in several decades Chinese culture became more visible. Many ethnic Chinese took advantage of the new democratic space to establish political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and action groups to fight for the abolition of discriminatory laws, defend their rights and promote solidarity between ethnic groups in Indonesia. They utilised the 'Reformasi' atmosphere to promote pluralism and multiculturalism, and to liberate their long-suppressed identity and cultural heritage. This book sets out to unpack the complex meanings of 'Chineseness' in post-1998 Indonesia, including the ways in which the policy of multiculturalism enabled such a 'resurgence', the forces that shaped it and the possibilities for 'resinicisation'. The author examines how ethnic Chinese self-identify, and investigates how the pribumi 'Other' has contributed to identifying the ethnic boundary in terms of 'race' and class. A unique aspect of the study is its discussion of the complexities of cultural crossing, borrowing and mixing experience of Chinese-Indonesians through localisation and globalisation. { 230pp, 152x229mm, July 2008; HB, £49.95, 1845192680:9781845192686 , Sussex Academic Press }
CHINESE RELIGIONS : Beliefs & Practices [Jeaneane Fowler & Merv Fowler] This book brings together the studies of Jeaneane Fowler in Taoism, Chinese popular religion and the broader canvas of Chinese cosmogony, and those of Merv Fowler in Confucianism, Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism. 'Chinese Religions' requires no previous knowledge and thereby serves as an introduction to the religions of China, and places it in the wider context of Chinese history and philosophy. The facets of Chinese religions are as broad, multilayered and varied as the geographical vastness of China itself, yet so many Chinese beliefs have found their way into the West -- the theory of yin and yang, the I Ching, the Tao Te Ching are good examples. One of the greatest characteristics of Chinese religions is that they encompass virtually every avenue of religious thought throughout the long span of Chinese pre-historic and historical pathways. { 320pp, 152x229mm, August 2007; PB, £16.95, 1845191722:9781845191726 , Sussex Academic Press }

CHRYSALIS EFFECT : The Metamorphosis of Global Culture [Philip Slater] This book shows that the chaos and conflict experienced world-wide today are the result of a global cultural metamorphosis, one which has accelerated so rapidly in recent decades as to provoke fierce resistance. Many of the changes that have taken place in the last fifty years -- the feminist movement, the rapid spread of democracy, the global economy, quantum physics, minority movements, the peace movement, the sexual revolution -- are part of this cultural transformation. Contrary to accepted opinion, the conflict it engenders is not a struggle between Left and Right, or between the West and Islam, but one taking place within the Left, within the Right, within the West, within Islam, within everyone and every institution. Currently, the world is in the middle of an adaptive process, moving toward a cultural ethos more appropriate to a species living in a shrinking world and in danger of destroying its habitat -- a world that increasingly demands for its survival integrative thinking, unlimited communication, and global co-operation. Award-winning author Philip Slater explains the metamorphosis of global culture through the analogy of the transition from caterpillar to butterfly -- the Chrysalis Effect -- whereby by old cultural assumptions are challenged and innovations are seen as a social ill, a critical moral infection, and attacked as such by the upholders of tradition. And when the budding culture replaces the previous one, it doesn't create a new way of being out of nothing, but merely rearranges old patterns to make the new ones. Today our world is caught in the middle of this disturbing transformative process -- a process that creates confusion over values, loss of ethical certainty, and a bewildering lack of consensus about almost everything. "Churchill and Spain" examines why Franco’s regime was alone among Europe's "Big Three" Fascist dictatorships in being able to survive beyond the end of the Second World War, and to what extent Churchill’s wartime policies enabled Franco to remain in control of Spain. Richard Wigg draws upon Foreign Office documents and reports -- many of which remained secret until the 1990s or only became available in 2005 under the UK Freedom of Information Act -- and the wartime papers of Churchill and Samuel Hoare, Britain’s special envoy to Madrid, to investigate this important aspect of Spanish and British history. The book explores the political, economic and diplomatic relations between Spain and Britain during the Second World War and explains how Churchill's lenient policies towards Franco helped significantly in the survival of Franco's regime after the war. In particular, this work demonstrates how the tolerance shown towards Spain's wartime trading in wolfram allowed the rebuilding of the country’s gold reserves, which proved crucial in enabling Franco’s Spain to endure post-war international isolation. This book, originally published to great acclaim in 2005, and published now for the first time as a paperback, is essential reading for scholars and students of European twentieth-century history, as well as all those interested in Churchill's international role in the Second World War. CIVIL SERVICE UNDER THE CONSERVATIVES, 1979-1997 : Whitehall's Political Poodles? [David Richards] This book examines the effect of seventeen years of Conservative government on the Civil Service and the ramifications for future governments. REVIEW: "A welcome and necessary antidote to those who, in the face of the Thatcher experience, speak hyperbole and display over-reaction to this most mesmeric of Prime Ministers and her technicolour premiership. In place of hype, Dr Richards has brought reason and evidence." --From the Foreword by Professor Peter Hennessy, University of London. "An excellent analysis of the impact of the Thatcher years (and until 1995 of the Major government) on the senior levels of the English civil service. Highly recommended." -- Choice. COLD WAR & SOVIET MISTRUST OF CHURCHILL’S PURSUIT OF DÉTENTE, 1951-1955 [Uri Bar-Noi] The release of previously unavailable Soviet archives has allowed a re-examination of Anglo-Soviet relations during Churchill's peacetime administration, with special emphasis on the Kremlin's motivation for resisting the Prime Minister's attempts to end the Cold War. Throughout 1951-55, the time was not yet ripe for détente: the USSR and Western powers were less than willing to accommodate each other. Instead they engaged in the consolidation of their own blocs and the build-up of their defensive potential. With Winston Churchill becoming the most outspoken advocate of détente, the Kremlin greeted the return to power of the Conservative Party under his leadership with a general mistrust. After Josef Stalin's death in March 1953, détente remained a distant reality. The collective leadership was keen to reduce international tensions without modifying its predecessor's foreign policy, or abandoning Soviet strongholds of central and eastern Europe. As part of its peace offensive, the Kremlin was prepared to improve the atmosphere in relations with Britain and increase the volume of Anglo-Soviet trade. However, the British remained mistrustful of the intentions of Stalin's successors, and refrained from initiatives leading to a relaxation of export controls independent from American embargo policy. The author demonstrates that Stalin's heirs suspected that Churchill's pursuit of détente was designed to secure far-reaching concessions. Moscow also felt that as a junior partner acting in full dependence on and in co-operation with US policy, Churchill was in no position to conciliate between the USSR and the USA. Engaged in a domestic struggle for power, members of the collective leadership were reluctant to allow their opponent, Georgi Malenkov, to negotiate single-handedly with western statesmen. It was only after Nikita Khrushchev's ascendance to power and Churchill's resignation from office that the Kremlin was prepared to participate in summit talks with the western heads of government. REVIEW: "Dr Bar-Noi has produced an interesting perspective on Churchill's attempt to reach a peaceful settlement of the Cold War, which is enriched by his use of Soviet primary sources." -- Professor Alan P Dobson, The Institute for Transatlantic European and American Studies, Dundee University. "Based on diligent research and a confident grasp of its subject matter, Uri Bar-Noi's fascinating book is particularly to be welcomed for the light it sheds on the inner workings of Soviet policy at the dawn of détente." -- Professor John Young, University of Nottingham, author of Winston Churchill's Last Campaign: Britain and the Cold War, 1951-55. { 237pp, 152x229mm, December 2007; HB, £55.00, 1845191765:9781845191764 , Sussex Academic Press }

COLONIAL DIVIDE IN PERUVIAN NARRATIVE : Social Conflict & Transculturation [Misha Kokotovic] Peru is a nation built on the still extant colonial divide between indigenous peoples and the descendants of their Spanish conquerors, a divide that finds expression in the short stories, novels, and essays by renowned Peruvian writers such as José María Arguedas and Mario Vargas Llosa. The Colonial Divide in Peruvian Narrative explores debates over Peru's modernisation and cultural identity in post-1940 literature, exploring how Arguedas, Vargas Llosa, and others confronted challenges of language, style, and narrative form in their attempt to write across their nation's cultural divisions. It examines how modernisation affected the relationship between Peru's white elite and its indigenous majority, how historical change stimulated the emergence of new narrative techniques, and how these in turn made possible an understanding of the historical contexts in which they arose. Though Peru is its principal focus, the text engages with current studies of modernity at the postcolonial margins of the Western world by contributing to an understanding of the class and ethnic conflicts generated by rapid modernisation in culturally heterogeneous nations. The Colonial Divide will add to the growing body of critical literature on the ways in which modernity in formerly colonised nations such as Peru is inflected by the enduring legacies of colonialism. REVIEW: "Kokotovic has provided a comprehensive review of contemporary Peruvian literature -- a remarkable analysis and discussion of literary theories in the field of Latin American studies and beyond. The theoretical discussions he pursues will allow his readers a better understanding of how intellectuals and cultural subjects perform within and outside academic institutions." -- Professor Guido Podestá, Department of Spanish and Portuguese; and Director, Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS), University of Wisconsin-Madison. "The Colonial Divide in Peruvian Narrative strikes me as potentially the most concise and yet also the most clarifying, forthright and plainspoken study of modern Peruvian fiction in English... Kokotovic has clearly mastered the critical literature he seeks to reform. By valuing coherence over novelty, he has written an intellectually satisfying, useful and informative piece of literary history and criticism." -- Neil Larsen, Professor of Comparative Literature and Critical Theory, University of California, Davis. { 290pp, 152x229mm, March 2007; PB, £19.95, 1845191846:9781845191849 , Sussex Academic Press }
COLONIALISM ON THE PRAIRIES : Blackfoot Settlement & Cultural Transformation, 1870-1920 [Blanca Tovías] This book spans a century in the history of the Blackfoot First Nations of present-day Montana and Alberta. It maps out specific ways in which Blackfoot culture persisted amid the drastic transformations of colonisation, with its concomitant forced assimilation in both Canada and the United States. It portrays the strategies and tactics adopted by the Blackfoot in order to navigate political, cultural and social change during the hard transition from traditional life-ways to life on reserves and reservations. Cultural continuity is the thread that binds the four case studies presented, encompassing Blackfoot sacred beliefs and ritual; dress practices; the transmission of knowledge; and the relationship between oral stories and contemporary fiction. Blackfoot voices emerge forcefully from the extensive array of primary and secondary sources consulted, resulting in an inclusive history wherein Blackfoot and non-Blackfoot scholarship enter into dialogue. Blanca Tovías combines historical research with literary criticism, a strategy that is justified by the interrelationship between Blackfoot history and the stories from their oral tradition. Chapters devoted to examining cultural continuity discuss the ways in which oral stories continue to inspire contemporary Native American fiction. This interdisciplinary study is a celebration of Blackfoot culture and knowledge that seeks to revalourise the past by documenting Blackfoot resistance and persistence across a wide spectrum of cultural practice. The volume is essential reading for all scholars working in the fields of Native American studies, colonial and postcolonial history, ethnology and literature. { 272pp, 152x229mm, October 2009; HB, £55.00, 1845193075:9781845193072 , Sussex Academic Press }
CONFLICT & CREATIVITY AT WORK : Human Roots of Corporate Life [Albert Low] Contributes to the tide of activism that is calling for higher ethical standards and corporate social responsibility within the corporate world. It offers a new way to look at a company, work, a product and company organization. Nobel prizewinner Milton Friedman says that the only social responsibility a company has is to make a profit. Albert Low questions this basic assumption and provides an alternative view: a company is a complex field of interacting and conflicting forces out of which a product emerges. The interests of the stockholder make up just one set of these forces. The corporate system arises out of the natural creativity of human beings and is expressed in the work that we do. Therefore to understand a company, its organisation and its reason for being, we must understand creativity and work -- what they involve, and their importance to our mental health. This new understanding of social responsibility is imperative for the very survival of our way of life. 'Business Ethics' quotes Thomas Donahue, US Chamber of Commerce President, as saying, "There is something fundamentally out of balance when short-term considerations become so dominant." The book offers a new way to look at the corporate system and long-term corporate social responsibility. Depression is widespread throughout western society. A contributing factor is the way the corporate system operates. People are now adjuncts to the system and the result is alienation and impotence. China and India are looming as major industrial competitors, and their employees are very well motivated. To compete in the West we must revise the present antiquated corporate philosophy that asserts that the interests of the stockholder are the only interests that the corporation can legally serve and adopt policies that promote corporate social responsibility. { 219pp, 152x229mm, September 2008; PB, £17.95, 1845192729:9781845192723 , Sussex Academic Press }

CONSERVATIVE PARTY EDUCATION POLICIES, 1976-1979 : The Influence of Politics & Personality [Daniel Callaghan] This book examines education policy making with close reference to interview evidence of protagonists and observers of the period, who include senior officials, ministers and ministerial special advisers. It introduces an original typology of regulars, irregulars and politicos, to classify those involved and examines the personal and political context in which they operated, how these contexts impacted on their decisions, and the subsequent course of education policies. The theme of the book is that people matter. Introducing ‘personality’ into our understanding and interpretation of the development of education policy, constitutes a significant original contribution. Too often individual policy-makers have been portrayed as ‘caricature creatures of a 'role', or an 'interest'. The actions, or inter-actions, of individuals are viewed and analysed through the prism of policies or assumed ideological positions. The book explores the reverse relationship, where the course of policies is not studied through ‘abstract generalities’ but through the concrete experiences of individuals, the personal and political contingencies they faced. It was not that politics and personality were all that mattered between 1976 and 1997. Rather, the problem was that they mattered too much. REVIEW: "Very well informed, attractively written and an original contribution to our understanding of this period...” -- Professor Gary McCulloch, Dean of Research and Consultancy and Brian Simon Professor of the History of Education at the Institute of Education. “The writing is a delight, the insights into human nature and their effects on the policy process are quite delicious...” Professor Richard Aldrich, Emeritus Professor of History of Education at the Institute of Education. { 234pp, 152x229mm, October 2005; HB, £19.95, 184519120X:9781845191207 , Sussex Academic Press }
CONSTANCIA DE LA MORA IN WAR & EXILE : International Voice for the Spanish Republic [Soledad Fox] Her fame seemed guaranteed by the compelling story of her life. CRUCIFIED NATION : A Motif in Modern Nationalism [Alan Davies] This book examines the nexus between religion and politics, considered in one of its most controversial aspects. The starting point is the 2001 attack on the United States, which a Canadian commentator ingeniously described as the 'passion of America'. This designation suggested an interesting inquiry into other so-called national passions: the notion of the Christ-nation crucified by evil powers because of its higher virtue. This motif is explored by analysing five modern nationalisms that have employed Christian symbolism in this manner: Poland, France, Germany, Ireland and Palestine. The author investigates the way in which fundamental Christian concepts are distorted and corrupted in the process, and points to the inherent dangers of this form of political self-glorification. Poets, philosophers, novelists and preachers have all played a major part in promoting the idea of the Christ-nation at certain times, mostly in the nineteenth century but also today. Famous examples are Adam Mickiewicz in Poland, Victor Hugo in France, the patriotic Lutherans during the First World War in Germany, Patrick Pearse in Ireland and certain Palestinian nationalist poets today. The clash of cultures, religions, nationalism and civilisations in the world today is ever more strident. The passion narratives of the five nations are interwoven with historical circumstance in order to cast light on the endurance and power of the narratives, to arrive at a final critique and 'tract for the times'. { 122pp, 152x229mm, March 2008; HB, £22.50, 1845192737:9781845192730 , Sussex Academic Press }
CRYPTO-JEWISH MASHHADIS : The Shaping of Religious & Communal Identity in their Journey from Iran to New York [Hilda Nissimi] This book tells the little-known story of a fascinating crypto-Jewish community through two centuries and three continents. Beginning as a precarious settlement of a few families in mid-eighteenth-century Mashhad, an Islamic holy city in northern Iran, the community grew into a closely-knit group in response to their forced conversion to Islam in 1839. Muslim hostility and a culture of memory sustained by intra-communal marriages reinforced their separate religious identity, vesting it in strong family and communal loyalty. Mashhadi women became the main agents of the cultural transmission of communal identity and achieved social roles and high status uncharacteristic for contemporary Jewish and Muslim communities. The Mashhadis maintained a double identity -- upholding Islam in public while tenaciously holding onto their Jewish identity in secret. The exodus from Mashhad after 1946 relocated the communal centre to Tehran, and later to Israel and after the Khomeini revolution to New York. The relationship between the formation and retention of communal identity and memory practices -- with interconnected issues of religion and gender -- draws upon existing research on other crypto-faith communities, such as the Judeoconversos, the Moriscos, and the French Protestants, who through the special blend of memory-faith and ethnicity emerged strengthened from their underground period. For the immigration period, the author challenges the old paradigm that “modernity and religion are mutually exclusive”. The book also explores the sometimes uncomfortable yet intimate relationships that exist between seemingly incompatible ways of seeing the past, both secular and religious. { 180pp, 152x229mm, December 2006; HB, £55.00, 1845191609:9781845191603 , Sussex Academic Press }
CURTAINED ROOM : Hallucination & Late-Victorian Writing [Oliver Tearle] According to Oscar Wilde, 'the primary aim of the critic is to see the object as in itself it really is not'. Through a series of close and often unusual readings, this book endeavours to develop Wilde’s remark into a detailed and creative theory of reading. Or perhaps that should be misreading: for, as this experimental work of criticism negotiates its way among the works of a number of late-nineteenth-century writers, particularly Robert Louis Stevenson and Wilde himself, Tearle uncovers some of the ways in which we as readers are prone to hallucinations while reading about, of all things, the experience of hallucination. Focusing in detail on a series of neologisms from writing of the period, such as 'handconscience', 'figmentary', and 'aftersense', and moving between a number of disciplines including literature, criticism, science, psychoanalysis, and even linguistics, "The Curtained Room" endeavours to answer a number of questions, ranging from the urgent to the downright bizarre: What is the link between hallucination and social conscience in writing of the late-nineteenth century? Is there such a thing as textual hallucination? Why does the author of this book see a 'snake' that is not there when he 'reads' Jekyll and Hyde? { 256pp, 152x229mm, December 2010; HB, £55.00, 184519294X:9781845192945 , Sussex Academic Press }

DAWN OF POLITICAL NIHILISM : Volume I of The Nihilist Order [David Ohana] In the turbulent period between 1870 and 1930, the contours on modernity were taking shape, especially the connections between technology, politics and aesthetics. The trilogy The Nihilist Order traces the genealogy of the nihilist-totalitarian syndrome. Until now, nihilism and totalitarianism were considered opposites: one an orderless state of affairs, the other a strict regimented order. On closer scrutiny, however, a surprising affinity can be found between these two concepts that dominated the history of the first half of the twentieth century. Starting with Nietzsche's philosophy, this book traces the development of an intellectual school characterised by the paradoxical dual purpose of a wish to destroy, coupled with a strong desire to create imposing structures. This explosive combination of nihilist leanings together with a craving for totalitarianism was an ideal of philosophers, cultural critics, political theorists, engineers, architects and aesthetes long before it materialised in flesh and blood, not only in technology, but also in fascism, Nazism, bolshevism and radical European political movements. Friedrich Nietzsche, Georges Sorel, the Italian Futurists, led by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, and Ernst Jünger were all well-known intellectual and cultural figures. Here they are seen and understood in a different light, as creators of a modern political mythology that became a source of inspiration for belligerent ideological camps. Among the ideas propagated by this school, and later adopted by totalitarian regimes, were historical nihilism, a revolt against the rationalistic and universalistic pretensions of the Enlightenment, an affirmation of the dynamism of modern life, and the replacement of the traditional Judeo-Christian values of good and evil by other dualities such as authenticity and decadence. Concurrently there took place affirmation of the technological era, the creation of a 'new man' and a violent order, and the birth of a new political style in place of traditional world-views. When channeled into the political sphere, these aesthetic nihilist ideas paved the way for the rise of totalitarianism. { 272pp, 152x229mm, February 2009; HB, £49.95, 1845192893:9781845192891 , Sussex Academic Press }
DECLINE OF ARAB UNITY : The Rise & Fall of the United Arab Republic [Elie Podeh] Analyses the political and socioeconomic processes that led to the rise and fall of the UAR, as well as the ramifications of this episode on the Arab world. DEFENSE & DIPLOMACY IN ISRAEL'S NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERIENCE : Tactics, Partnerships & Motives [David Rodman] This work defines the central concepts of Israel’s national security doctrine as deterrence, geography, manpower, quantity versus quality, offensive manoeuvre warfare, conventional versus unconventional threats, self-reliance, great power patronage, and peripheral partnerships. The author describes and explains how these concepts have influenced the war fighting experience of the Israel Defense Forces, including the air force and the navy. Special attention is paid to Israel’s relationships with the United States, Turkey, and India as they relate to the Jewish state’s national security, and in particular offers a new interpretation of what really drives these relationships; the motives behind Israeli foreign policy and Israeli arms export policy; and whether Israel’s national security doctrine ought to include a capability to threaten the existence of hostile Arab (and Islamic) governments. Sections of this book have been used to teach a class on strategic studies at the National Defense University in Washington, DC. REVIEW: "This book of essays examines a wide range of topics from the role of the Air Force in Israel's National Security strategy, to Israel's bilateral relationship with Turkey and the US, to Israel's arms export policy and the factors motivating its foreign policy. However, these, and a number of other issues, are all linked together by their centrality to Israel's complex, and at times contradictory, national security requirements. Given the challenges facing the Jewish state this work is very timely, all the more so because the author brings a deep knowledge to the subject. All in all a highly informative work that makes an important contribution to the literature on Israeli strategy and involvement in the international arena." -- Professor Efraim Karsh, Head, Mediterranean Studies Programme, King's College, University of London. { 160pp, 152x229mm, February 2005; HB, £37.50, 1845190734:9781845190736 , Sussex Academic Press }
