ADULT EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN, NORWAY & SPAIN : A Comparative Study of Participation, Motivation & Barriers [Einar F Skaalvik & Liv Finbak (eds)] The rapid development and the increased competition in the labor market make continuing education a necessity for an increasing number of people. Equal opportunities for adults to engage in education are therefore important in order to combat exclusion from the labor market. To increase the provision of equality in opportunity for engagement in education we need to understand the psychological processes involved in participation in education. This report presents results from a European Commission Leonardo da Vinci-supported study of adult education in Great Britain, Norway, and Spain. The purpose of the project was, in a comparative perspective, to analyze psychological processes involved in participation and non-participation in adult education. The study focuses on the scale of participation, both in general and in different types of courses: which groups of adults participate the most, motivational aspects of participation, barriers to learning, conceptions of learning, and perceived benefits of adult education. { 100pp, 175x250mm, January 2001; PB, £14.00, 8251916690:9788251916691 , Tapir Academic Press }
ANIMAL SIGNALS : Signalling & Signal Design in Animal Communication [Yngve Espmark, Trond Amundsen & Gunilla Rosenqvist (eds)] How can we explain the peacock's beautiful tail decorations, or the wonderful song of the nightingale? Why are some smells nice and others nasty? Understanding the signalling systems of nature has wide-ranging relevance including biological conservation and human communication. Animal Signals provides a state-of-the-art update on current knowledge within this rapidly developing field. Written by leading international scientists, it provides a comprehensive overview of the fascinating diversity of animal signals and signalling functions. ARCTIC ANIMALS : and their Adaptations to Life on the Edge [Arnoldus Schytte Blix] Where and what is the Arctic? What animals live there, and how are they distributed? How do they cope with cold in their austere environment, and how can Arctic mammals survive birth when it is 40 degrees below freezing. How can seals dive to a depth of 1000 metres and stay submerged for more than an hour, and how does complete darkness in winter affect the inhabitants of the high Arctic? This book answers these questions and also gives an introduction to the Arctic. It is based on the author's 40 years of experience in the Arctic, its environment and animal life. As this book contains almost 200 illustrations and deals with the entire Arctic animal kingdom, it will be suitable as a textbook for courses in Arctic biology, and also serve specialists in the field. It is a reference book and a source of information about published original literature. { 296pp, 175x245mm, June 2005; BH, £35.00, 8251920507:9788251920506 , Tapir Academic Press }

BAUERN ZWISCHEN HERRSCHAFT UND GENOSSENSCHRAFT : Peasant Relations to Lords & Government. Scandinavia & the Alpine Region 1000-1750 [Tore Iversen, John Ragnar Myking & Gertrud Thomas (eds)] This is the second anthology in a series of three from the project Peasants' control over land and resources from the High Middle Ages to the end of the early modern period -- Norway, Scandinavia and the East-Alpine region, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The first volume concentrated on ownership to land and peasant tenures. The present anthology in a more general way deals with vertical relations between peasants, landlords and territorial lords as well as with horizontal bonds and conflicts within the peasant society. These vertical and horizontal relations of power and influence have in the German academic tradition been described by the terms Herrschaft and Genossenschaft. This volume explores such relations with special emphasis on peasants' participation in and influence on courts and village assemblies. The contributors examine regions with contrasting topography and manorial systems in the Alps, in Bavaria and in the Scandinavian countries, taking into consideration that peasant participation might vary according to the strength of ecclesiastical and lay lords and the growth of territorial power. Their results show that peasants in all those regions had some influence, mostly in the Late Middle Ages, but that especially Tyrol and Norway can be identified as regions with substantial and continuous peasant influence from the Middle Ages well into the Early Modern Period. { 288pp, 155x230mm, December 2007; PB, £35.00, 8251921945:9788251921947 , Tapir Academic Press }

BIOSAFETY FIRST : Holistic Approaches to Risk & Uncertainty in Genetic Engineering & Genetically Modified Organisms [Terje Traavik & Lim Li Ching (eds)] The challenges for risk identification, assessment and management posed by genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms are some of the most demanding issues facing many countries and societies today. The evolving field of biosafety has developed in response to these challenges. BIOSAFETY FIRST is a stimulating collection of the latest thinking concerning biosafety science. It is a unique work as its approach to biosafety is holistic, encompassing not only the scientific, but also the socio-economic, cultural, policy and regulatory spheres. It does not claim to give all the answers, but acknowledges the issues and points to the uncertainties and knowledge gaps that still need to be addressed. Drawing on the new scientific field of ‘gene ecology’, and advocating a precautionary approach, this book provides a foundation on which countries can start to openly and responsibly appraise these new technologies and their products. { 612pp, 170x240mm, September 2007; PB, £51.00, 8251921139:9788251921138 , Tapir Academic Press }

CONTROLLING THE UNCONTROLLABLE? : The Great Powers in the Middle East [Tore T Petersen (ed)] The Norwegian University of Science and Technology hosted a conference on the Anglo-American Middle East in Trondheim 2 to 4 May 2005. A distinguished group of scholars accepted our invitations and gracefully agreed to rewrite their lectures for inclusion in this book. They also easily transcended the, perhaps, narrow theme of the conference, making their papers a sophisticated discussion, by and large, how the different great powers have, not always successfully, tried to control the Middle East. Hence the title of this book, 'Controlling the Uncontrollable'. Edward Ingram compares with a grand sweep the British and the American imperial experience in the Middle East, he notes that too many scholars exaggerate the power of nineteenth-century Great Britain in order to compare it with the present day 'US paramountcy'. Alan Milward is on a different tack, explaining how the oil crisis and oil embargo forced the European Common Market to take a new approach towards the Arabs, in the process cutting loose from the American embrace and laying the foundation for a common EU foreign policy. In his article, Douglas Little deepens our understanding of his concept American Orientalism -- the tendency to dismiss Muslims as backward, decadent and evil -- ending his essay with a withering criticism of George W Bush who has rejected the doctrine of containment in favour of preventive war when invading Iraq, needlessly creating the current imbroglio there. Peter Hahn discusses American-Israeli relations in the period 1945-1961, showing that Israeli and American officials were often at loggerheads on the future of the Jewish state. Rounding off the essays is Mary Ann Heiss' account of key episodes of American oil policy since 1945. Even with the importance of oil, as Heiss explains, the balance of power had by 1974 shifted in favour of the oil producers; that had 'shrewdly divided the Atlantic Alliance, pitting the Western Europeans against both the Americans and each other'. { 114pp, 170x240mm, December 2006; PB, £28.00, 8251921902:9788251921909 , Tapir Academic Press (Rostra Books) }

DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR A MONITORING ENVIRONMENT CONCERNING DISTRIBUTED REAL-TIME SYSTEMS [Aida Omerovic] While the dependability requirements of distributed real-time systems are expanding, there is currently no framework for defining and mapping these requirements into the system design and operation. A method of controlling and achieving the dependability level is real-time monitoring, which measures the degree of requirements fulfilment, relates it to the pre-defined, measurable system-level expectations and dynamically adapts the system, based on quality metrics, risk analysis, cost evaluation, control theory, neural networks, data acquisition and system knowledge management. The book deduces a framework to reveal, define, quantify, measure, analyse, design, implement, test, monitor and enhance dependability (functional and non-functional) requirements of a distributed system with real-time constraints. It is presented how the framework can be applied throughout all life-cycle stages, under varying constraints and with maximised cost effectiveness. An overview of the tools and methodologies applicable has been given and an integrated and generalised architecture for ensuring continuous fulfilment of system requirements, proposed. The framework provides a multilevel specification mechanism to establish the preservation of system requirements. This ensures the correct functioning of system through adaptations at run time. Among the benefits are controlled access and coordinated resource sharing in accordance with service-level agreement policies, multi-stakeholder interest preservation, transparency with respect to location, naming, performance etc., achievement of quality of service on demand, decentralisation, seamless integration of resources and applications, as well as increased predictability. READERSHIP: The intended audience is broad: real time and distributed systems scientists and developers, software engineers, students, quality assurance managers, contractors, users, service providers and all those searching for an alternative approach to handling and ensuring automated control of fulfilment of system requirements. Moreover, those needing a handbook on contract negotiations and a method of tracing operational results back into system requirements of long lived projects with high dependability and integrity demands. { 202pp, 155x230mm, April 2004; PB, £29.50, 8251919312:9788251919319 , Tapir Academic Press }

EMBODIED MINDS -- TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENTS : Conceptual Tools for Analysis, Design & Training [Thomas Hoff & Cato A Bjørkli (eds)] The deep integration of technology in our modern society forces us to rethink the relationship humans have to their surroundings. The rise of complex sociotechnical systems denotes how humans and technology have entered a symbiotic relationship where the co-ordinated and fluent interaction between us and technology is a crucial condition for modern societies to function. The disharmony in the relationship between humans and technology has immediate and serious consequences. Accidents and failed operations in transport, incomprehensible user interfaces, and failure to learn from experience are all examples from everyday life suggesting that the understanding of human-technology relationships is not sufficient. This book investigates how humans relate to technology in our modern society, and how our basic assumption of human thought and behaviour guide our efforts to improve and control technology. The fact is that the skilled use of technology in expert systems and everyday life challenges the traditional conception of humans and technology as two separate elements in the analysis of work. This book shows how this dualism is evident and problematic in a wide range of areas, such as investigation of human error in accidents, case studies of innovative interface solutions, simulator training strategies, analysis of work practices in complex systems, and traffic safety research. This book is written for researchers, students and professionals, to supplement the ongoing effort to understand how technology can be integrated with more confidence in modern society. { 277pp, 155x230mm, August 2008; PB, £47.00, 8251923417:9788251923415 , Tapir Academic Press }

FINN ET FYR : A Guide to the Norwegian Lighthouses [Eli Johanne Ellingsve] Text in English and Norwegian. 350 years ago the first navigation light was lit at Lindesnes on the southern tip of Norway. Since then, over 200 lighthouses and fog bells have helped ships find their way to harbours or navigate along the coast of Norway. The lighthouse has always had a mysterious attraction for people; more so in the past few decades. This reference book reveals part of the history of Norwegian lighthouses. It explains the etymology, setting and cultural history of these lighthouses. There is also a brief history for each of them. { 256pp, 150x215mm, June 2007; HB, £24.00, 8251922038:9788251922036 , Tapir Academic Press }
FIRST NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS : Trondheim 3-4 May 2001 [B Skallerud & H I Andersson (eds)] Computational Mechanics is a relatively new field of research which combines rigorously developed numerical methods with the basic laws of mechanics, be it solid or fluid mechanics. The development of computer science and technology during the last three decades has made it possible to solve rather complex mechanical problems from first principles, thereby bridging the prevailing gap between the fundamental equations of mechanics and industrial needs in such disparate fields of application as hydropower turbines and aluminium extrusion. The advent of Computational Mechanics, first primarily as a research area and thereafter as an effective and reliable means of engineering design analysis, has now made it possible to discard the often questionable rules-of-thumb and semi-empirical criteria used so far in many industries. Still, however, insight in the fundamental laws of mechanics is essential in order to perform and understand the outcome of a computerised analysis of a mechanical process or system. { 456pp, 170x250mm, January 2001; HB, £55.00, 8251916623:9788251916622 , Tapir Academic Press }

FROM WHERE LIFE FLOWS : The Local Knowledge & Politics of Water in the Andes [Frode F Jacobsen] Whilst a large number of foreign and state initiated water management systems have failed for various reasons, locally developed water harvesting systems have proven their viability by surviving for hundreds of years. Whilst there has to be some recognition of the geographical limits and some questions asked about the quality of these water supplies, even with these detractors accounted for these systems often remain superior to those imposed by political and private interests, not only in terms of their reliability, but also in terms of their flexibility and more equitable control. This book aims to offer a closer look at local flexible strategies for securing water resources under demanding climatic conditions and during environmental changes. The research dealt with here aims to identify a range of initiatives that have been created by and for members of indigenous communities to address such challenges, such as traditional structures for collecting run-off and rainwater. It poses the questions: How have these strategies been formed and made to operate? What positive and negative lessons can be learned from the interplay between local knowledge, subsistence strategies, and the influx of knowledge and initiatives from the outside? As well as describing the function and social significance of water harvesting systems, a further aim of this book is to highlight the wider political and economic context of local knowledge about water harvesting and its uses, and the impact of contrasting management strategies on social development in the local communities involved. Water harvesting and irrigation systems form an important part of the vast knowledge that indigenous and local populations have of their natural environment. Such knowledge is embedded within complex social organisations, and forms the basis of both formal and important non-formal social networks. Indeed, together with the management of land, the management of water resources frequently provides the basis of social institutions and relationships to which ideas of belonging and community membership are tied. Indeed, water resources, along with other natural resources, comprise not only a vital element of subsistence, but also a vital field of social and political inter-action and practice. { 151pp, 155x230mm, December 2006; PB, £23.00, 8251921449:9788251921442 , Tapir Academic Press }

HORIZONTAL SKYSCRAPER [Bjorn Erring et al (eds)] Chinese cities are undergoing profound changes. Urban development has transformed the townscape; low-rise structures based on courtyard type housing, horizontal in character, have been replaced by vertical constructions. In the 1980s and 1990s Chinese cities were featured by the conflicting wishes for rapid modernization and cultural continuity. The articles of this book refer to experiences drawn from this particular period of time, and are selected among case studies and related theoretical considerations. The case studies are concentrated on four cities: Beijing, Xi'an, Quanzhou and Shanghai. The authors have all been active in different fields of urban transformation in historic Chinese cities. They are politicians, historians, planners, anthropologists, architects and scholars. The articles describe the substantial transformation of the cities and the implications of this change. The contributing authors represent three countries; China, France and Norway. They all participated in two conferences in 1995 and 1996, dealing with urban renewal in housing areas of traditional Chinese cities. The outcome of these conferences constitute the raw material for this book. { 389pp, 175x250mm, January 2002; PB, £45.00, 8251917638:9788251917636 , Tapir Academic Press }

LAYER MANUFACTURING, VOLUME 1 : A Challenge of the Future [Professor Oyvind Bjorke (ed)] Manufacturing today means that more complex products must be brought to the market at a dramatically reduced time. In order to achieve this, efficient tools must be used such as CAD/CAM in combination with the new fast field of rapid prototyping. Prototyping can be a potential bottle neck in a product development activity. A delay in bringing the product to market can cause a disaster for the whole product. This work examines layer manufacturing and these related issues. { 181pp, 180x260mm, January 2000; PB, £17.50, 8251911257:9788251911252 , Tapir Academic Press }

NIDAROS OFFICE OF THE HOLY BLOOD : Liturgical Music in Medieval Norway [Gisela Attinger & Andreas Haug (eds)] When looking at Nidaros -- or Trondheim as the city is now called -- from the perspective of music history, it was a hub of activity on the edge of medieval Europe. Being the seat of the Norwegian archbishop from the middle of the twelfth century until the Reformation in 1537, it played an important role as an administrative and cultural centre not just in Norway but throughout the extensive archbishopric. As elsewhere, the musical practice of the cathedral was determined by the reception of the Roman Chant, and the transition from a passive to an active, productive, chant reception can be seen in the musical compilations that have likely been produced by this centre. One of them is the music for a local cult of a relic of the Holy Blood, seemingly the oldest one of which the music has been preserved, is the object of the present study. It includes a facsimile of the only known course of the Office, an edition of the texts and melodies, a translation of the Latin texts, and commentaries and essays on the liturgical importance and the historical background of the Office as well as the liturgical importance and the historical background of the Office as well as the building history of the church in which it was sung during the Middle Ages. { 216pp, 170x240mm, December 2004; PB, £12.00, 8251920086:9788251920087 , Tapir Academic Press }

NORWEGIAN COASTAL CURRENT : Oceanography & Climate [Roald Sætre (ed)] The Norwegian Coastal Current originates primarily from the freshwater outflow from the Baltic and the freshwater run-off from Norway. It flows northwards along the coast of Norway as a low-salinity current. The Norwegian coastal region is the spawning ground for a number of important oceanic fish stocks, and the physical environment has an impact on the recruitment, growth and geographical distribution of these stocks. In the late 1920s and early 1930s the Institute of Marine Research in Norway established a coastal oceanographic observation system. This continued to evolve, and its core elements are still in operation. Drawing on the results generated by this observation system, as well as by other coastal studies, this book reviews our current understanding of physical/chemical conditions in the Norwegian Coastal Current in such a way as to make the material more easily accessible to non-specialists. A series of chapters introduce readers to the geography, currents and water masses and the temporal and spatial variability of the Norwegian Coastal Current. Interannual fluctuations in physical conditions are most likely to be the prime cause of ecosystem variability. { 160pp, 180x260mm, February 2007; HB, £22.00, 8251921848:9788251921848 , Tapir Academic Press }
NORWEGIAN SEA ECOSYSTEM [Hein Rune Skjoldal (ed)] The Institute of Marine Research in Norway carried out the research programme Mare cognitumon the Norwegian Sea ecosystem from 1993 to 2001. Drawing upon results from this programme, the book summarises the current knowledge about this ecosystem. In a series of chapters the readers are introduced to the geography, currents and water masses that are the abiotic setting or 'scene' of the ecosystem, and to the plankton, fish, squids, whales, seals and seabirds that are the key biological components or 'actors' in the ecosystem. The 'play' is the ecological drama where the animals strive to find their food whilst avoiding to be eaten themselves. The Norwegian Sea ecosystem contains very large biomasses of zooplankton and pelagic fish stocks. It is characterised by pronounced seasonal cycles in plankton production and large-scale migrations of herring and other animal populations. { 559pp, 180x260mm, April 2004; HB, £41.50, 8251918413:9788251918411 , Tapir Academic Press }
OFFERTORY & ITS VERSES : Research, Past, Present & Future [Roman Hankeln (ed)] Proceedings of an International Symposium at the Centre for Medieval Studies, Trondheim, 25 and 26 September 2004. In the melodies of the Gregorian offertories the art of the solo singers in the medieval church reached its highpoint. As if to confirm this position of superiority, a distinct revival of interest in the offertory has been noticeable from the 19th century onwards, not only on the field of scholarly research but also in practical musical performances. The musical style of the Gregorian offertory inspires description in superlatives. Chant handbooks have always been unanimous about its climactic (but also exceptional) status because of its enormous length, its practically non-formulaic melodic elaboration, its high range -- often exceeding the limits of medieval modal theory -- its occasional chromaticism and its highly exceptional treatment of the text. All these features are extremely rare in other chants of the Roman Mass. In many ways the state of today's research stands in sharp contrast to the importance of the topic for our understanding of medieval musical culture. In the autumn of 2004, therefore, a symposium at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the Archbishop's Palace, Trondheim, brought together Chant scholars and a Latin philologist from the USA, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Norway to pool present knowledge in this area and to discuss methods and ideas for future research. Wellknown experts in the field of the offertory, also associated with the study group CANTUS PLANUS of the International Musicological Society, the participants form a sort of international offertory-network, having determined the direction of research in this area during the last fifty years. Research on offertories reflects the main challenges to modern musicology and philology, from heuristic problems of the many hundred medieval sources to intricate questions of the interpretation of style, function and Rezeptionsgeschichte as well. Furthermore, as with every Gregorian chant genre, the study of the offertory provides insights not only into the musical history but also the cultural history of Western society. { 181pp, 155x230mm, March 2007; HB, £29.50, 8251922046:9788251922043 , Tapir Academic Press }
ON THE PILGRIM WAY TO TRONDHEIM [Stein Thue (ed)] The Pilgrim Way Project was launched in 1994 when the Ministry of the Environment instructed the Directorate for Nature Management and The Directorate of Cultural Heritage to reconstruct the walk along the old roads to Nidaros (the former name of Trondheim). The work to reopen the old roads has been carried out in close co-operation with the 29 municipalities through which the Pilgrim Way winds. A steady stream of pilgrims flocked to Saint Olav's shrine in Nidaros Cathedral, from around 1050 until 1537, the time of the Reformation. Now, almost 500 years after the introduction of Protestantism saw the end of the pilgrimages, people are again encouraged to wander in the tracks of the pilgrims. The intention of this text is to stimulate interest in an important part of Norwegian history, to encourage outdoor activities and to let people share cultural experiences. { 48pp, 180x260mm, January 1999; PB, £6.95, 8251913098:9788251913096 , Tapir Academic Press }

The concepts power, energy, wholeness, emancipation and interdependency are discussed as components in the professional relation between persons. { 144pp, 155x230mm, December 2003; PB, £24.50, 8251918901:9788251918909 , Tapir Academic Press }
PID CONTROL [Finn Haugen] This book describes how to control variables of physical dynamic systems -- as level, temperature, pressure, speed, and position -- using the PID controller. (PID = proportional, integral, derivative). This controller is without doubt the most important and most frequently used controller used in practical industrial applications. There may be hundreds of PID control systems in one industrial plant to keep process variables close to their set-points and to ensure the stability of the whole plant. The book gives a well written and easily understandable introduction to practical and theoretical aspects of PID control of dynamic systems, well suited for introductory control courses in BSc and in MSc studies. It is also a reference for the practical engineer. The theoretical basis for this book may be found in the book Dynamic Systems -- modelling, analysis and simulation by the same author. { 293pp, 175x250mm, July 2004; PB, £35.50, 8251919452:9788251919456 , Tapir Academic Press }

PRINCIPLES OF EXTRACTIVE METALLURGY, 2ND EDITION [Terkel Rosenqvist] Rather than simply describing the processes and reactions involved in metal extraction, this book concentrates on fundamental principles to give readers an understanding of the possibilities for future developments in this field. It includes a review of the basics of thermodynamics, kinetics and engineering principles that have special importance for extractive metallurgy, to ensure that readers have the background necessary for maximum achievement. The various metallurgical unit processes (such as roasting, reduction, smelting and electrolysis) are illustrated by existing techniques for the extraction of the most common metals. Each chapter includes a bibliography of recommended reading, to aid in further study. The appendices include tables and graphs of thermodynamic qualities for most substances of metallurgical importance; these are ideal for calculating heat (enthalpy) balances and chemical equilibrium constants. SI Units are used consistently throughout the text. { 506pp, 155x230mm, April 2004; PB, £57.99, 8251919223:9788251919227 , Tapir Academic Press }

PROJECT EVALUATION : Making Investments Succeed [Knut Samset] Organisations increasingly use projects to undertake major as well as smaller tasks. Projects help target and delimit activities, place the responsibility and transfer risk from the financing to the implementing party. As a result, evaluation has become popular as a tool to control, guide and draw lessons of experience from projects. This book is intended both as a textbook for students and a handbook for practitioners. It provides hands-on easy to comprehend lessons about evaluation as a phenomenon, its design, preparation and methodology -- as well as the project as a management tool. { 233pp, 180x260mm, May 2003; HB, £45.00, 8251918405:9788251918404 , Tapir Academic Press }

ROMAN-ALPHABET INSCRIPTIONS OF MEDIEVAL TRONDHEIM, VOLUMES 1 & 2 [Martin Syrett] This book provides a full account of medieval inscriptions in the Roman alphabet from the city of Trondheim. Some 119 such inscriptions are currently preserved from the town, spanning a period from about 1150 to 1520; they are found on the wall of medieval churches, on various kinds of loose artefacts, and above all on gravestones. Less attention has been paid to medieval Roman epigraphy in Norway than to runic inscriptions, but the corpus from Trondheim reveals many areas worthy of study. The ideas, influences, and modes of expression inherent in the actual texts reflect a further aspect of the Christianisation of Scandinavia in the Middle Ages, and the cultural influences at work in the period can also be identified in the art-styles and iconography of the decoration that is often found alongside. Attitudes towards religion, death, and social standing can be identified as well as the avenues through which ideas flowed into medieval Norway and fused into a distinctive local monumental tradition. The major part of the book consists of a presentation of the various inscriptions with text, translation, and discussion of points of linguistic and historical interest; this is accompanied by a full photographic record of the material along with an introduction which attempts to bring together the most significant themes and problems inherent in it. { 588pp, 180x260mm, October 2002; PB, £37.50, 8251917891:9788251917896 , Tapir Academic Press }

SEQUENCES OF NIDAROS : A Nordic Repertory & Its European Context [Lori Kruckenberg & Andreas Haug (eds)] The sequence was one of the most important types of music of the Middle Ages. Performed during the mass and sung throughout the churches of medieval Europe, the Latin poetry of this new compositional genre distinguished itself from what is commonly called 'Gregorian chant'. The sequences of the medieval Cathedral of Nidaros and its vast archdiocese comprise a song repertoire remarkable for its sheer size, chronological comprehensiveness, and stylistic diversity. The current volume presents eleven studies on this musical tradition, and the authors, using a wide range of perspectives and approaches -- paleographical, codicological, repertorial, textual, musical, and exegetical -- place this Nordic practice in its broader European context. This book is more than a study of a regional tradition of a single genre: it instead touches on topics and methodologies fundamental to contemporary research on chant. { 422pp, 180x260mm, October 2006; PB, £29.50, 8251921058:9788251921053 , Tapir Academic Press }
THEORY OF SCIENCE : A Short Introduction [Jonathan Knowles] This book provides an accessible but systematic survey of perspectives on science and rationality through the arguments and ideas of leading thinkers of the twentieth century, including Einstein, Carnap, Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend, Hempel, Gadamer, Foucault and Harding. It also gives a critical introduction to scientific methodology, including the relationship between theory and observation, the problem of induction, hypothetico-deductive method, truth and progress and explanation in natural and human science. It covers the theory of science part of the syllabus in Examen Philosophicum at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), for which there has hitherto been no unitary text book in English. It is also suited to use on other courses at various levels, as well as being of interest to a wider audience concerned with the philosophical and social problems of science. { 147pp, 170x240mm, January 2006; PB, £22.00, 8251921120:9788251921121 , Tapir Academic Press }
TORE OLAUS ENGSET, 1865-1943 : The Man Behind the Formula [A Myskja & O Espvik (eds)] Every curriculum in traffic or queuing theory presents Engset's formula. Published in 1918 this relatively simple, yet powerful piece of scientific achievement became one of the methodological pillars for the designers of communication networks. His basic model is developed from scratch in an unpublished report in 1915. This book tells the story of a remarkable man -- Tore Olaus Engset (1865-1943). Fully occupied with managerial duties of the Norwegian Telecommunication Authority, his spare time he devoted to developing methods for handling teletraffic. Also, he acted in the theoretical breakthroughs of physics during the first quarter of the twentieth century. A cooperation between Professor A Myskja and the editor of Telektronikk, O Espvik, has resulted in a thorough biography of T O Engset. His most important traffic-theoretical works are translated into English and discussed from the viewpoint of current knowledge. { 196pp, January 2002; HB, £43.00, 8251918286:9788251918282 , Tapir Academic Press }
VIVID SHAFT OF NORTHERN LIGHT : Journeys with Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus & Flora Norvegica Through Three Centuries [G M Marsh] After living and gardening in the intense humidity of the equatorial region for twenty five years the author was free to seek again her earthly paradise -- the quiet, calm, health giving tranquillity of Norway. She would re-establish her sixty year interest in photography and seek out the delicate colours of the northern wild flowers in contrast to the flamboyant foliage of her domicile. Experiences of her past have coloured this short account in an attempt to simply explain contrasting living in the arctic and equatorial region, and provide a brief historical setting of Gunnerus' life and times. Her love of Norway shines through in her many photographs and an added attraction are the delightful extracts from the sketchbook of Alfred Heaton Cooper RA made in Norway between 1890 and 1906. { 144pp, 215x280mm, January 2002; HB, £24.95, 8251917778:9788251917773 , Tapir Academic Press }
