![]() | ACTING IN HOPE : African Churches & HIV / AIDS II [Ezra Chitando] In this book, Ezra Chitando calls upon African churches to train their voices in speaking out and challenging systems of oppression so that AIDS competent churches work towards the transformation of death-dealing practices while strengthening life-enhancing ones. He argues that the response of African churches to the HIV epidemic will be determined by the quality of their theological education and the ability of the current generation of Africans to question the culture it inherited, amongst other contextual issues. Chitando insists that not only must churches with quick feet, long arms, warm hearts and loud voices necessarily have sharp minds but that a critical analysis o African cultural beliefs and practices must occur. This openness to new idea and modes of thinking means that that African traditionalists, Africa Christians, African Muslims, followers of other religions and ideologies an secularists all need to engage in an open re-evaluation of African cultures in the context of HIV. Chitando courageously demands that the contemporary generation has the mandate to actively critique what the previous generation bequeathed to it by deciding whether or not to uphold, transform or reject previously held beliefs and practices. This is the second of two books dealing with the response of African Churches to the HIV/AID epidemic. { 93pp, 120x210mm, March 2008; PB, £10.00, 2825415243:9782825415245 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | AFRICA'S BROKEN HEART : The Land the World Forgot [Hugh McCullum] The day that the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo voted, on 30 July 2006, marked the most significant election held in Africa since 1994 balloting in South Africa at the end of that nation's apartheid regime. Like South African's, Congolese voted in their millions, walking up to 50 kilometres each way to the polling stations. The election brought to a close 130 years of foreign invasions, colonialism, exploitation of vast mineral wealth, dictatorship and the consequences of two recent wars that cost 4.3 million lives in just over five years, the most deadly conflict since World War II. Few in the rest of the world were aware of these conditions. The western media largely ignored this region, while the international community and the African continent seemed helpless to stop the destruction. Civilians, especially women and children, made up the majority of victims. The World Council of Church's general secretary, Samuel Kobia of Kenya, sent a hard-hitting pastoral message to the 65 million people of Africa's third largest country on the eve of these first elections held in more than 40 years. Kobia promised to accompany them as they move toward a difficult and unknown future. He also dispatched the author of this report to help break the silence surrounding the Democratic Republic of Congo. "Africa's Broken Heart" is the story of a people who must no longer be ignored. This is a passionate and painful book, yet it is laced with narratives of hope and heroism. { 94pp, 120x210mm, December 2006; PB, £7.00, 2825415065:9782825415061 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | AFRICAN INITIATIVES IN CHRISTIANITY : African Initiatives in Christianity [John S Pobee & Gabriel Ositelu] In the continent where Christianity is experiencing its most rapid growth, a great deal of this expansion is taking place in churches founded by Africans for Africans. These churches are often referred to as 'independent' or 'indigenous' churches, to distinguish them from the 'historic' or 'mission-founded' churches planted during the colonial period by evangelists from Europe and North America. Diverse as they are, the attractiveness of these African Initiatives in Christianity (AICs) stems from the serious attempt they make to express and live out their faith in genuinely African cultural forms and styles. In this new book, two African theologians and church leaders -- one from an historic church, one from an AIC -- offer an insightful introduction into this phenomenon. While their main focus is on what the growth of African Initiatives in Christianity implies for the future of the ecumenical movement in Africa and around the world, they also examine some key teachings of the AICs and trace their roots in African church history since the first century. { 74pp, 120x210mm, January 1998; PB, £5.95, 2825412775:9782825412770 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | AFRICAPRAYING : A Handbook on HIV & AIDS -- Sensitive Sermon Guidelines & Liturgy [Musa W Dube (ed)] How should the church and its leaders deal with the origin and meaning of HIV/AIDS, and with the stigma it engenders? How should they address the needs of those affected, and minister to the infected? This resource book is designed for all who have to handle situations created by this relatively new epidemic -- church leaders/workers, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, the laity. It seeks to “equip the church leader/worker with strategies to break the silence and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, creating a compassionate and healing church”. And it seeks to “help [them] by underlining how the Christian faith calls us to serve and to heal God’s world and people”. The five sections give sermon guidelines and worship outlines for services ranging from weddings to funerals; such key moments of the church’s year as Christmas and Easter; attitudes of compassion or discrimination; congregations peopled by youth or grandparents; and social realities like poverty and gender inequality. { 270pp, June 2004; PB, £15.30, 2825414077:9782825414071 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | AIDS -- MEETING THE CHALLENGE : Data, Facts, Background [Sonja Weinreich & Christoph Benn] Each year HIV/AIDS claims the lives of millions and profoundly affects the economic, political and social stability of lands and regions. If humanity is not to be overwhelmed by this disease, global solidarity and concerted action are required. This book provides essential information for coalitions working locally, regionally and globally to prevent the spread of infection and to offer humane treatment and community resources to people living with HIV/AIDS. It is based in the authors' personal experiences and research as they have engaged in the campaign to eradicate AIDS. They address matters of medical fact, and also take into consideration sociological, psychological and theological questions that inevitably arise. 'AIDS: Meeting the Challenge' is a compendium of current information on the crisis of HIV/AIDS, with indications of how readers may continue to update their knowledge amid the constant changes in basic data, scientific developments and a flood of specialised literature. Among the many topics covered, readers will find sections of the book on HIV transmission, vulnerability to infection, socio-economic contexts, stigma and discrimination, prevention, care, antiretroviral therapy, advocacy and lobbying, as well as reflections on the churches, theology and HIV/AIDS. { 118pp, 160x240mm, July 2004; PB, £8.25, 2825413518:9782825413517 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | ANGELS HAVE LEFT US : The Rwanda Tragedy & the Churches [Hugh McCullum; Foreword by Desmond Tutu] Following the massacres that decimated Rwanda in 1994, the author carried out hundreds of interviews in the country and elsewhere with government, military and United Nations officials, pastors and church leaders, survivors, refugees and displaced people. This book focuses on the part played in these events by churches in Rwanda, throughout Africa and around the world -- sometimes a story of heroism and self-sacrifice, but too often one of cowardice, ethnocentrism and corruption. The author analyses the roots of the tragedy, looks at the future of a shattered church in a shattered country, and poses hard questions about what the church and the ecumenical family should do in a world where poverty, oppression and hatred are creating many potential Rwandas. On the tenth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda, this book has been reissued, with a new preface and Afterword. { 132pp, 120x210mm, November 2004; PB, £8.95, 282541154X:9782825411544 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | APOSTOLICITY & UNITY : Essays on the Porvoo Common Statement [Ola Tjorhom (ed)] We would like to recommend this book to all who are concerned about the Porvoo fellowship as well as those who are commited to visible unity -K G Hammar and David Hope Apostolicity and Unity explores the purpose and potential of the Porvoo Common Statement (PCS), a major ecumenical agreement between the Anglican churches in Great Britain and Ireland and the Lutheran churches in the Nordic and Baltic nations. First presented in 1992 and now affirmed by ten signatory churches, the PCS provides the basis for church fellowship for approximately fifty percent of the so-called Protestant Christians in Europe. Porvoo is the European parallel to the 'Called to Common Mission' statement arising out of the Episcopal-Lutheran dialogue in the United States. Written by church leaders and theologians who have long worked for the cause of church unity, this volume discusses key aspects of the PCS, including the nature of the church, the basic characteristics of church unity, and the church's mission in the world. Special emphasis is placed on the theological core of the PCS -- its understanding of apostolicity and apostolic continuity, and its proposal of how different signs of such continuity can be shared between the churches within the framework of communion. Critical contributions from members of other church traditions round out the volume by assessing the wider ecumenical significance of the PCS. { 271pp, 150x230mm, January 2002; PB, £18.90, 2825413755:9782825413753 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | ART OF FORGIVENESS : Theological Reflections on Healing & Reconciliation [Geiko Müller-Fahrenholz] Can the theological ideas of forgiveness and reconciliation have any political relevance, given the massive inhumanities of our time, of which Auschwitz remains the most horrifying symbol? Reconciliation is a word that springs lightly from the mouths of politicians and pundits, perhaps because it never seems to have much concrete content. Forgiveness is a concept that seems shorn of its roots by the gradual disappearance of the sense of sinning against God and of the need for penance -- reducing forgiveness to a social convention (as in 'Pardon me!'). The thought that either of these theological ideas might have some political relevance seems thoroughly unconvincing in the light of the apparently unforgivable horrors of our time. This book grows out of the conviction that, as the author says, "it is necessary to think about forgiveness not in spite of Auschwitz but because of Auschwitz." Drawing on the Bible and church history, Geiko Müller-Fahrenholz shows how the idea of forgiveness has been distorted, abused and largely lost, and why it is so important to reclaim this healing art, not only in personal relations but especially in the relations between nations and peoples { 106pp, 140x215mm, May 2004; PB, £7.95, 2825412244:9782825412244 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | AXIS OF PEACE : Christian Faith in Times of Violence & War [S Wesley Ariarajah] The war in Iraq is over, and we are now facing its aftermath. The searching and divisive questions raised for the churches by the invasion of Iraq linger on. Are there "just wars"? What does the Bible teach about war and violence? What constitutes patriotism when one’s nation is at war? Is there theological justification for wars of self-defence or liberation? S. Wesley Ariarajah explores these questions to facilitate ongoing conversation in faith communities. Surveying instances of violence in many regions of the globe, often involving confrontation between religious communities, Ariarajah examines what violence does to those who perpetrate it on others. Moving beyond simplistic notions of 'good' and 'evil' in world affairs, he calls on peoples of faith to counter terror in all its forms through the creation of an 'axis of peace'. { 137pp, 120x210mm, November 2004; PB, £8.40, 2825413941:9782825413944 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | BAPTISM, EUCHARIST & MINISTRY The statement published here marks a major advance in the ecumenical journey. The result of a fifty-year process of study and consultation, this text on baptism, Eucharist and ministry represents the theological convergence that has been achieved, through decades of dialogue,. under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Over one hundred theologians met in Lima, Peru, in January 1982, and recommended unanimously to transmit this agreed statement -- the Lima text -- for the common study and official response of the churches. They represented virtually all the major church traditions: Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Methodist, United, Disciples, Baptist, Adventist and Pentecostal. The churches' responses to this agreed statement have played a vital part in the ecumenical process of 'reception". ![]() | BECOMING A CHRISTIAN : The Ecumenical Implications of Our Common Baptism [Thomas F Best & Dagmar Heller (eds)] The essays in this book explore varieties of baptismal practice today, address the continuing problem of 're-baptism', offer fresh perspectives on the relation between baptism and Christian ethics, and call the churches to draw the full implications for Christian unity of their 'mutual recognition of baptism'. Baptism, the birthright common to all Christians, is a cornerstone of the ecumenical movement. Continuing the dialogue among liturgists, theologians, church musicians and pastors begun in So We Believe, So We Pray (WCC, 1995), this book focuses on baptism in relation the unity of the church. Exploring patterns of baptismal practice today, it includes striking examples of inculturation from around the world. It also insists on the link between liturgy and life. With contributions from Gordon Lathrop, Anscar Chupungco, OSB and Janet Crawford, this book is an important resource for everyone concerned with baptism, worship, the life of the church and the ecumenical movement today. { 106pp, 140x215mm, January 1999; PB, £7.95, 2825413151:9782825413159 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | BEM AT 25 : Critical Insights into a Continuing Legacy [Thomas F Best & Tamara Grdzelidze (eds)] Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) remains a seminal text for the churches and the ecumenical movement. Since its publication in 1982, this World Council of Churches Faith and Order convergence document has been translated into more than 40 languages, has remained an ecumenical best-seller, and has been the basis of many official agreements between churches. This vibrant collection of essays, from a wide range of confes-sional and regional perspectives, explores the continuing legacy of BEM. Articles trace the influence of BEM -- and the challenge it continues to pose today -- in areas such as worship, ecclesiology, the churches' social witness, and local parish life. But critical questions are also raised: how far have the churches acted upon the agreements signalled in BEM? Was there full participation in the BEM process in all regions of the world? And: what does the churches' experience with BEM tell us about the next stage of the ecumenical journey? This is an essential resource for all those interested in the history -- and future -- of the ecumenical movement. { 318pp, 140x215mm, March 2008; PB, £10.00, 2825415170:9782825415177 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | BEYOND BORDERS : Refugees, Migrants & Human Rights in the Post-Cold War Era [Elizabeth G Ferris] Millions of people on all continents have fled their homes. The social, economic and political factors behind these mass movements -- war and persecution, drought and hunger, joblessness and hopelessness, environmental devastation -- seem certain to continue in the years ahead, but pressure is growing in many countries to close doors to those fleeing. In this thoroughly researched volume, the author analyses current movements of people in their global and regional contexts and suggests how the international system might respond better to the needs of migrants and refugees. She concludes with a vision and plan of action for churches and non-governmental organisations. ![]() | BEYOND IMPUNITY : An Ecumenical Approach to Truth, Justice & Reconciliation [Genevieve Jacques] Many observers believe that torture, ethnic cleansing, genocide and other crimes against humanity persist -- despite the universal revulsion they evoke and their explicit prohibition in international law -- because of impunity: the failure to hold perpetrators of similar violations in the past accountable for their deeds. Drawing on the experience of people in many parts of the world, this book insists that there can be no justice or healing in societies torn by such violations without truth and accountability. It is an eloquent challenge to churches to act on their commitments and join with others in the search for genuine justice, repentance and reconciliation. { 61pp, 140x215mm, January 2000; PB, £6.95, 2825413216:9782825413210 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | BEYOND THE EAST-WEST DIVIDE : The World Council of Churches & 'The Orthodox Problem' [Anna Marie Aagaard & Peter Bouteneff] Orthodox participation in the World Council of Churches has always been a paradox -- enthusiastically committed and yet plagued by complaints. This situation has lately reached crisis proportions: two Orthodox churches have withdrawn their membership; more threaten to follow. Is this an 'Orthodox problem'? Or is there something fundamentally wrong with the ecumenical machinery? In this book, two theologians -- one an Orthodox and one a Lutheran -- engage in an extended dialogue to illumine some of the issues and possible ways forward. The issues they discuss fall squarely within the agenda of the Special Commission on Orthodox Participation in the WCC, which was created in Harare in 1998. { 118pp, 120x210mm, January 2001; PB, £7.95, 282541350X:9782825413500 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | BIBLE & PEOPLE OF OTHER FAITHS [Wesley Ariarajah] A plea for reading and understanding the Bible not as a dividing wall between religious communities but as a 'lamp that sheds illumination on the life of Christians as they seek to live with people of other faiths'. Most Christians in the modern world live in situations of religious pluralism. They are constantly challenged, at many levels, to relate to people of other living faiths. But is the Bible supportive of a life in dialogue? That is the question The Bible and People of Other Faiths seeks to answer. ![]() | BOOK THAT READS ME : A Handbook for Bible Study Enablers [Hans-Ruedi Weber] In this concise handbook the author shares insights into group Bible study gained during his long years of experience as a missionary and ecumenist, demonstrating how Bible study can focus on the Bible not only as a literary document but also as oral tradition in story-telling and singing, as drama in worship and symbolic acts, as visible Word through art and as a source of meditation. He devotes a chapter to each of these five approaches, illustrating how it has been used throughout the history of the church and then offering tested and practical suggestions for animating actual Bible studies along these lines. { 61pp, 120x210mm, January 1995; PB, £6.95, 2825411647:9782825411643 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | BRINGING CHURCHES TOGETHER : A Popular Introduction to Ecumenism [Gideon Goosen] According to the author, "In order to understand the present, and move confidently into the future, one must have an appreciation of the past." The book therefore deals, in a non-technical way, with the theology and history of ecumenism, explains the origins of the main Christian denominations, gives a brief history of the World Council of Churches, and introduces some of the current issues. Ecumenical ethics and inter-religious dialogues form the subjects of the two final chapters. The author concludes each chapter with questions for group discussion, and ends the book with suggestions for practical ways in which the ordinary individual can promote ecumenism. Several appendices give useful background information. This book is for the average reader or student of theology who would like to be better informed about ecumenism. REVIEW: "Bringing Churches Together is one of the most helpful introductions to the history, issues, concerns and experiences of the ecumenical movement. The first edition proved to be an invaluable tool for adult education and undergraduate courses, and for church study groups. This enlarged and updated version offers vision and encouragement to all to participate in the search to manifest unity as a witness in a world of contradiction, alienation and division." -- Alan Falconer, Faith and Order, World Council of Churches. { 173pp, 140x215mm, January 2001; PB, £11.95, 2825413488:9782825413487 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | CALLED TO ONE HOPE : The Gospel in Diverse Cultures [Christopher Duraisingh (ed)] The official report of the WCC's 1996 conference on world mission and evangelism (Salvador, Brazil), which explored the nature of Christian witness to the gospel in a world of many cultures, shaped by forces of globalisation and fragmentation and yearning for signs of hope, freedom and community. It highlights the need to meet the mission challenges of the 21st century through ecumenical and common witness, renouncing all competitiveness and proselytism in mission. Included are the texts of ten major presentations, reports from the four sections in which delegates worked, and interpretative essays reflecting on the conference experience, including one by the editor which identifies key lines for future mission reflection emerging from Salvador. This is an indispensable resource and reference volume for all concerned with the mission of the church today. { 248pp, 135x210mm, January 1998; PB, £14.95, 282541235X:9782825412350 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | CALLED TO THE ONE HOPE : A New Ecumenical Epoch [Samuel Kobia] In a world torn apart by division and anxiety, there is greater need than ever for church unity, and for united action to help transform the world and its ways. "Called to the One Hope" challenges the churches to provide a common response to the insecurities and dangers that plague humanity in the opening decade of the 21st century. Samuel Kobia, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, has travelled widely and heard the cries of people affected by hatred, violence, starvation, economic injustice and environmental degradation. At other moments, he has heard enthusiastic expressions of joy and hope. He has encountered the spiritual yearning of youth who are seeking a more profound relationship with God. In this book, Kobia addresses humanity’s sense of alienation and quest for identity, asking how the churches, the ecumenical movement and the World Council of Churches -- divided as they are -- may yet be renewed for service. Reiterating the radical message of Jesus, he calls for a spirituality of resistance to all that threaten people and the planet. Kobia recognises signs of hope already manifesting themselves throughout the world, and reports experiences of grace and transformation that may serve as models for future Christian witness and common action. { 144pp, 120x205mm, September 2006; PB, £7.00, 2825414891:9782825414897 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | CALVIN’S ECONOMIC & SOCIAL THOUGHT [André Biéler] In this authoritative work, Swiss theologian and economist André Biéler examines the economic and social thought of the 16th-century reformer John Calvin as a turning point in western history that transformed European understanding of wealth and poverty, work and productivity, civil government and the responsibility of citizens. John Calvin, living and working in Geneva, then as now a centre of trade and banking, is the Reformer who thought most carefully about economic and social issues, warning that "social disorder is first and foremost disdain for the poor and oppression of the weak". Calvin’s application of the teaching of the Bible to practical issues of his place and time speaks to us with continuing relevance. André Biéler examines the reformer's practical theology within the context of his proclamation of the Christian gospel and doctrine, carefully differentiating the authentic voice of Calvin from that of later Calvinists, Puritans, and such academic interpreters as Max Weber, Ernst Troeltsch and R.H. Tawney. Biéler's monumental work, a storehouse of Calvin's own writing and teaching, has enjoyed steady sales in French since it first appeared in 1959. With this new edition, it becomes available for the first time in English translation. { 545pp, 160x235mm, December 2005; PB, £28.95, 282541445X:9782825414453 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | CHANGING THE PRESENT, DREAMING THE FUTURE : A Critical Moment in Interreligious Dialogue [Hans Ucko with Charlotte Venema & Ariane Hentsch (eds)] For over 30 years the World Council of Churches has been involved in interreligious dialogue. In the last decades, there has been an increasing interest in dialogue due to the unexpected return of religion as a reality to reckon with in society and political life. In an unprecedented way in recent years and in numerous parts of the world, many societies are marked by tension and conflict between and within religious communities, yet, where mechanisms for dialogue and encounter exist, there is a greater possibility of fostering deeper knowledge and awareness among people of different religions. Good neighbourliness grows and thrives where there is mutual acceptance and mutual respect. The WCC affirms the importance of interreligious relations and dialogue today as a core issue for its work. Harvesting experiences in dialogue suggests that we are at a critical moment -- thus in June 2005, the World Council of Churches organized the 'Critical Moment in Interreligious Relations and Dialogue' conference, facilitating reflection on future orientations in interreligious dialogue. The aim of this book is to share the highlights of the Critical Moment conference and to give food for thought and action to all involved in interfaith dialogue and cooperation. It presents the plenary speeches and a compilation of the working group reports, as well as a summary of the answers from participants to a survey made before the conference. To make the material more alive and useful for those not at the conference, the book includes a study guide, meant for practical use in the local community. It links to issues raised at the conference, and gives background information, thoughts for reflection and questions to work on. Although intended for those who already have some interfaith experience, this book can also be useful to people who are new to the field. It gives insight into current issues and dilemmas and suggestions for further reflection. { 154pp, 155x230mm, September 2006; PB, £8.50, 2825414905:9782825414903 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | CHINESE CONTRIBUTION TO ECUMENICAL THEOLOGY : Selected Writings of Bishop K H Ting [Janice Wickeri & Philip Wickeri (eds)] A selection of theological writings by Bishop K H Ting, former head of the China Christian Council and chair of the Chinese Christian Three-Self Patriotic Movement. Born in Shanghai in 1915 and still Principal of Nanjing Union Seminary, Bishop Ting has worked through the last, often difficult, 60 years of change in China. His mission has been to address reconciliation between church and society, Christian and non-Christian, China and the world. Ting's contribution to the re-emergence of church life and the opening of the church to the outside world in the 1980s and 1990s is widely recognised. The overriding theme in his writings -- God's love never ends -- has sustained his philosophy throughout his long life. The essays and sermons included in this volume cover Bishop Ting's nearly 60-year career as a leader of the China Christian Council. { 115pp, 140x215mm, January 2002; PB, £8.95, 2825413585:9782825413586 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES ON THEOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY : A Faith & Order Study Document Anthropology -- the understanding of human nature - is a vital aspect of the Christian faith. Christians affirm that human beings are made 'in the image of God'. We are, each and every one us, of infinite worth, made for life in relationship with God and with each other. But what does that affirmation mean today? How can Christians confront today’s challenges to traditional understandings of human nature, and respond to the widespread assaults on human dignity and worth? This book is the result of a wide-ranging study by the commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches. It brings Christian understandings of the human person into critical conversation with cutting-edge issues from genetic engineering and artificial intelligence, to poverty and HIV/AIDS, to disabilities and gender identity. The book culminates with ‘Ten Affirmations on Human Nature’, offered as a basis for common reflection and action. It will be a valuable resource for Christians and churches seeking to understand -- and defend -- the human person in today’s complex and changing world. { 60pp, 135x210mm, November 2005; PB, £5.50, 2825414573:9782825414576 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | CHRISTIANITY : A History in the Middle East [Habib Badr (ed)] Co-published with the Middle East Council of Churches. REVIEW: "It is still generally taken for granted… that the history of Christianity is essentially European history, and that beyond Europe’s immediate eastern borders lies a homogeneous Muslim world… Here… in comprehensive and accessible form, is a unique survey of this [Christian Middle Eastern] heritage, written by first-class scholars and by those who best know the Eastern Mediterranean world from within… This is a very significant book indeed for all, Christians or non-Christians, who want a better understanding not only of the Middle East but of the whole of our contemporary cultural and religious scene." -- Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury "Missionary engagement and theological creativity; interaction with other religions, cultures and civilizations and promotion of justice, peace and freedom; diaconal action and martyria in life and in death have marked the long, complex and rich history of Eastern Christendom… This book is a serious and bold attempt to provide a unique perspective on various dimensions and spheres of the churches’ life in the Middle East." -- Aram I, Catholicos of Cilicia and Moderator of the WCC "Authors belonging to various ecclesial traditions trace together the history of Christianity in the Middle East. Their common approach reveals to what extent ‘unity in diversity’ has been a meaningful gift, as much as it remains a demanding challenge to the historic lands where Christianity first spread." -- Walter Cardinal Kasper, President, Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity { 934pp, November 2005; PB, £45.00, 2825414247:9782825414248 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | CHRISTIANITY, POVERTY & WEALTH : The Findings of 'Project 21' [Michael Taylor] In spite of 60 years of aid and development work by the churches, the ecumenical family has become less certain about how best to tackle world poverty. The study described in this book set out to clarify policies for the future. It asked questions about the nature and causes of poverty and wealth, their relation to the work and teachings of the churches, and what responses the churches should now be making. Poor and rich communities, government officials, academics, non-governmental organisations, church leaders and the private sector in over 24 countries were involved. The study's conclusions emphasise that 'wealth' is as much of an issue as 'poverty', suggesting the need for much clearer Christian teaching on justice and the economic order. They support moves towards a global alliance of local and national churches as a more effective instrument for achieving structural change. They ask for a reassessment of the strategic nature of development projects and programmes. And they assert that local congregations should be taken far more seriously and inspired and equipped to help bring about God's justice. { 98pp, 140x215mm, February 2004; PB, £9.99, 2825413747:9782825413746 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | CHURCHES IN EUROPE AS WITNESSES TO HEALING [Keith Clements] This collection of articles, speeches and sermons traces the current and future of European churches in mission on a continent caught up in rapid social change and institutional reordering. The author reflects on the meaning of healing and reconciliation within specific contexts from Northern Ireland to Serbia and, more generally, among the many religiously and culturally pluralist and post-modern societies found across the breadth of Europe. He challenges the churches with this recurring question: Are we still of any use? This is the thread running throughout. His answer is a definite 'yes' -- provided the churches really live in the world as it is and renew their hope in the gospel itself. Biblical commentary, church traditions, personal experiences and illustrations drawn from everyday life combine to offer insights into Europe's need for healing and reconciliation, the relationship between particular identity and universal community, churches' potential to act as peace-makers in Europe and the wider world, and contemporary prospects for Christian unity. { 128pp, 140x215mm, January 2003; PB, £10.50, 2825413828:9782825413821 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | COUNCILS OF CHURCHES & THE ECUMENICAL VISION [Diane Kessler & Michael Kinnamon] The Ecumenical Movement of the 20th century saw the formation all around the world of voluntary associations of separated and autonomous Christian churches in a defined geographical area which have sought to manifest their fellowship with one another, engage in common witness and service, and advance towards the goal of visible unity. At the dawn of the 21st century, many of these councils of churches face difficult times. This lively introduction describes the history and theological basis of these bodies, notes the tensions often arising within them and discusses three specific contemporary challenges: the proposal that ecumenical organisations should expand to become inter-religious bodies, the development of ecumenical leadership, and the relationship between spirituality and ecumenism. This book is about councils of churches and the people who are part of them. How do councils look when they correspond to the ecumenical vision? What qualities are desirable in volunteer and professional ecumenical leaders? What are the spiritual marks and fruits of ecumenical commitment? In what ways should councils address the relationship between Christian churches and people of other faiths? Here is a book that will help in the ongoing process of calling Christians to reframe their picture. Shared life is the norm. Division demands explanation. A unique resource for anyone interested in ecumenism. { 86pp, 120x210mm, January 2000; PB, £5.95, 2825413240:9782825413241 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | DOWNTRODDEN : The Struggle of India's Dalits for Identity, Solidarity & Liberation [James Massey] Recent years have seen dawning awareness of the long-hidden suffering of India's millions of Dalit people, marginalized and oppressed as 'untouchables' falling outside the traditional Hindu caste system. Their treatment, which cuts across communal and religious lines, has become an important concern of the churches in their commitment internationally to combat all forms of racism. The author of this book, a Dalit from North India, uncovers the religious roots of this system of oppression and surveys its historical development over 3500 years, as well as the beginnings of the Dalits' struggle to free themselves from it. He also analyses the role played by missionaries, churches and Christian theology in the past and suggests what must change if Christians are to have a part in articulating and bringing about a vision of solidarity and genuine liberation. { 82pp, 120x210mm, January 1998; PB, £5.95, 2825412309:9782825412305 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | ECCLESIOLOGY & ETHICS : Ecumenical Ethical Engagement, Moral Formation & the Nature of the Church [Thomas F Best & Martin Robra (eds)] Between 1993 and 1996 a World Council of Churches study examined the relationship between ecclesiology -- our understanding of what the church is -- and ethics -- what the church does -- in responding to problems and issues facing the world today. Gathered in this single volume are the reports from three consultations (Costly Unity, Costly Commitment and Costly Obedience), along with major papers from the third, which focused on the church as a community in which people are formed morally. This ecumenical enquiry offers fresh insights into critical issues for all who are seeking a renewed vision of the ecumenical movement. Among the themes are: the imperative for ecumenical ethical reflection and engagement; the church as a community in which moral formation takes place -- through its teaching and through its life; the ethical dimension of worship, baptism and eucharist; the relation between koinonia (fellowship) and the quest for justice, peace and the integrity of creation; the churches' relationship to movements and action groups. { 121pp, 140x215mm, January 1997; PB, £9.95, 2825412163:9782825412169 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | ETHNIC CONFLICT & RELIGION : Challenge to the Churches [Theo Tschuy] While wars between nations have taken a staggering toll in human lives, even more people died in the 20th century from violence at the hand of their own governments. Much of this suffering and death has been sparked by tensions and hostilities arising out of ethnic differences. Today's social, economic and political realities, including the weakening of the nation state in a global economy and the disappearance of multi-ethnic nation states such as the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, mean that ethnic conflict is likely to remain on the international agenda. For the churches, committed to reconciliation but often themselves identified with one party or another in ethnic conflicts, this raises critical questions regarding their mission in the world. The heart of this book is case studies of nine 20th-century ethnic conflicts, in which millions of people have perished. The author illustrates the complexity of these situations as they have evolved over the centuries and highlights the role which religious affiliations and convictions, including Christianity, have often played in worsening relations among ethnic communities. A final chapter suggests four lines of reflection and action for Christian churches confronted by ethnic conflicts in their own contexts and elsewhere. This book is intended to help concerned Christian individuals, congregations and study groups to recognize the complexity of issues of ethnicity and nationalism, reflect biblically and theologically on ethnic identity, and respond pastorally to such situations of tension and conflict. { 160pp, 155x230mm, January 1997; PB, £11.95, 2825411906:9782825411902 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | EUCHARIST & WITNESS : Orthodox Perspectives on the Unity & Mission of the Church [Petros Vassiliadis] The guiding vision of the ecumenical movement was expressed by the sixth assembly of the World Council of Churches (Vancouver 1983) in terms of a eucharistic vision: "Christ -- the life of the world -- unites heaven and earth, God and world, spiritual and secular. His body and blood, given to us in the elements of bread and wine, integrate liturgy and diaconate, proclamation and acts of healing... Our eucharistic vision thus encompasses the whole reality of Christian worship, life and witness." Yet within the ecumenical family the integrating potential of the eucharist has been largely unrealized; and this central experience of the Christian faith remains a painful symbol of the churches' divisions. The essays in this book combine biblical study, theological reflection and historical and contemporary analysis to develop a eucharistic understanding of the identity of the church which points beyond old debates to a rediscovery of the central diaconal dimension of the eucharist. Such an understanding, the author contends, can advance ecumenical dialogue while enhancing the churches' ability to address together today's urgent challenges to their work and witness. { 115pp, 140x215mm, January 1998; PB, £8.95, 2825412619:9782825412619 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | EUCHARISTIC WORSHIP IN ECUMENICAL CONTEXTS : The Lima Liturgy -- & Beyond [Thomas F Best & Dagmar Heller (eds)] Since its development in 1982, the wide use of the 'Lima Liturgy' at ecumenical gatherings has stimulated a new awareness of the possibilities -- but also the problems -- of eucharistic worship in ecumenical settings. This book grows out of a meeting which brought together liturgists, theologians, church musicians and pastors from a variety of contexts and traditions to reflect together on the significance and practice of celebrating holy communion ecumenically and to produce new materials for use in such services. Besides essays on 'the Lima Liturgy and beyond' by Gordon Lathrop and the late Max Thurian, and creative, liturgically sensitive suggestions for holding eucharistic worship in ecumenical contexts, the book contains a selection of ancient and contemporary materials for such worship (including eucharistic prayers by Per Harling), making it an invaluable resource for anyone concerned with worship and with the ecumenical movement. { 166pp, 155x230mm, January 1998; PB, £11.95, 2825412325:9782825412329 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | FACE OF PAIN & HOPE : Stories of Diakonia in Europe [Robin Gurney (ed)] How can churches develop new forms of service which will both meet the needs of individuals, families and wider communities and promote social justice? The stories in this book describe creative efforts to work out such a vision of diakonia (Christian service) in countries all around Europe. The church which shines through them is one where God is present in the midst of the muddy streets and darkened ways, and where people are empowered to stand for their rights and dignity. The book makes those people known and their voices heard. Besides encouraging people to listen to these voices and be inspired to similar efforts elsewhere, this book is also suitable as a resource volume for training people for similar work. The people of different faiths who constitute the multi-religious think-tank called 'Thinking Together', brought together by the WCC, are open to focusing together on some of the basic issues of belief and religion. This book carries a story from each religious tradition represented in the group, which reflects how that tradition has wrestled with how to look upon the other. The group hopes that these stories will contribute to a new reading of those dimensions in our religious traditions that help us provide or create space for the other as a significant other. { 64pp, December 2005; PB, £6.50, 2825414646:9782825414644 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | FACING AIDS : The Challenge, the Churches' Response The global spread of HIV/AIDS poses grave challenges for individuals and institutions alike -- not least for Christians and the churches. What are the latest scientific findings about AIDS? How can we address the theological and ethical issues raised by AIDS? How can the churches respond to their members who are directly affected by AIDS? How can the churches help to prevent its spread? How are issues of human rights directly related to the spread of AIDS? This WCC study document is the fruit of two years of intensive consultation by an international group of pastors, theologians and ethicists, scientists, doctors and nurses, people living with AIDS and people working with those touched by it. Successive chapters focus on the scientific facts and social, economic and cultural context; theological perspectives; ethical and medical-ethical issues; human rights and responsibilities; and pastoral care by the church as healing community. The challenge of AIDS calls for a forthright and faithful response from Christians and the churches. This book is an important resource for shaping that response. { 126pp, January 2000; PB, £8.95, 2825412139:9782825412138 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | FACING OUR DIFFERENCES : The Churches & Their Gay & Lesbian Members [Alan A Brash] The deep controversies within many churches have created a reluctance in many quarters to place the issue of homosexuality on the ecumenical agenda. Yet an essential vocation of the ecumenical movement is to enable a dialogue among the churches at precisely those points where their differences of conviction are sharpest. This book seeks to encourage just such a dialogue. The author points the way towards respectful mutual understanding of divergent interpretations of the Bible, theology and ethics in order to help Christians to reflect on their own convictions and to face together a sensitive topic which has profound consequences for the lives of many people and for the unity of the church. In this book Alan A Brash seeks to encourage just such a dialogue on homosexuality. What he has to say reflects his experiences in a local congregation in Aotearoa-New Zealand as well as a familiarity with churches around the world that comes from many years of international ecumenical service. { 75pp, 120x210mm, January 1995; PB, £5.95, 2825411655:9782825411650 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | FAITH & LAW : Juridical Perspectives for the Ecumenical Movement [Marc Reuver] Differences in doctrine and worship that divide Christian churches -- and how to overcome these -- have drawn much ecumenical attention over the years. There has been far less discussion of how the quest for Christian unity is helped or hindered by the legal structures and forms by which churches organize themselves. In most Christian traditions canon law (or church order) has strengthened confessional identity and distinctiveness, taking little account of new realities emerging from the quest for the unity of the church -- common witness and collaboration, a sense of community and mutual accountability, agreements over historic theological disputes, fresh understandings of church-state relations and the establishment of ecumenical organizations. After outlining the historical development of church legislation in Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic traditions, the author explores what ecumenism implies for this central but often neglected element of church life. { 133pp, 135x215mm, January 2000; PB, £10.95, 2825413259:9782825413258 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | FAITH & ORDER AT THE CROSSROADS : Kuala Lumpur 2004 -- The Plenary Commission Meeting [Thomas F Best (ed)] This book is the official record of the Faith and Order plenary commission meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2004 on the theme "Receive one another, as Christ has received you, for the glory of God" (Rom. 15:7). "Faith and Order" exists to help the churches overcome the sources -- theological, historical and social -- of their division. For the commission (probably the most diverse church-based theological forum in the world) it was the second meeting in Asia, and the first in a Muslim-majority country. Hosted by the Council of Churches of Malaysia, the meeting heard challenging addresses by the prime minister of Malaysia and by the general secretary of the WCC, introductions to key theological themes and to Faith and Order studies, and substantial Bible studies. This volume includes explorations of issues as diverse as the nature of the church, the nature of human nature, baptism, the relation of ethnic and national identities to Christian unity, the interpretation of biblical texts and Christian symbols, theological perspectives on peace and violence, the relation of inter-religious dialogue to the search for Christian unity, and -- not least -- the future of Faith and Order itself. It is indispensable as a stimulus to further work on Christian unity today. { 467pp, 140x215mm, June 2005; PB, £15.95, 2825414239:9782825414231 , World Council of Churches } |

![]() | FAITH IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY : A Primer for Christians [Rob van Drimmelen] The Christian belief that God became incarnate in Jesus Christ to share the human condition with us challenges any absolute division between the spiritual and the material. To pray for daily bread and forgiveness of debts is to recognize that economics cannot be separated from faith. Yet this link is not an easy one to maintain. While the suffering of the poor and the devastation of the environment may anger us, the bewildering complexity of the global economy tempts us to conclude that economics must finally be left to the experts. This 'primer for Christians' addresses the paralysis created by seeking simple answers to today's complex economic issues. Drawing on his experience in banking and economics as well as the ecumenical movement, the author provides lucid explanations of the major ideas, forces and realities of the global economy today: globalization, international trade, transnational corporations, international finance, employment and unemployment, land and resources, markets and growth. The concluding chapter describes some 'signs of hope' -- recent initiatives to act within the global economy in ways that can build more just, participatory and sustainable communities. { 157pp, 120x210mm, January 1998; PB, £8.95, 2825412546:9782825412541 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | FAITH ON THE FRONTIER : A Life of J H Oldham [Keith Clements] J H Oldham is the Father of the Ecumenical Movement and it is impossible to tell his story without recounting the way in which churches and missionary societies all over the world were growing closer together throughout the whole of the 20th century, going back before the Edinburgh Conference in 1910, until his death in 1969. Oldham was a major player in it all. But the book is also about much more than the churches. For Oldham every issue in society or international relations called for the challenge of the gospel, be it in education, race relations, women's suffrage, colonialism or economics. During a short period working in India around 1900 he set himself to build bridges between the Indian and missionary communities because foreignness was a hindrance to evangelism and he knew only too well that what the Indians wanted most was friends and love. { 515pp, 155x230mm, February 2004; PB, £25.00, 2825412899:9782825412893 , World Council of Churches } |

Particularly through his thought-provoking and incisive editorials he succeeded in making One World a widely appreciated source of information and reflection about the ecumenical movement. This book is a selection of these editorials. Rooted in biblical faith, they tell and interpret the story of the complexity of unity in the widest sense of the word. REVIEW: "Marlin VanElderen was a rare ecumenical treasure. Rooted deeply in a strong Reformed tradition, he was nonetheless able to engage with the rest of the church and, indeed, help the church to engage with the rest of the world as a 'community of moral discourse' as he put it." -- Jim Wallis, Editor-in-Chief of Soujourners Magazine, USA. "These elegant moving meditations arrest one's attention with their opening close observation of some concrete happening: often whimsical, sometimes quirky, now and then biting. ![]() | FONTES DE AGUA VIVA : Estudos Bíblicos sobre Graça e Transformação [Milton Schwantes] Text in Portuguese. This book offers a series of seven biblical commentaries by Christian authors from varied cultural settings and regions of the world. Passages of scripture have been selected to provide biblically oriented perspectives on the theme of the ninth assembly of the World Council of Churches, "God, in your grace, transform the world". The assembly, to be held in February 2006 at Porto Alegre, Brazil, provides an opportunity for Christians everywhere to contemplate the nature of God’s grace and the ways in which God is transforming the world. Readers and local groups are invited to hear the voices and consider the experience of the interpreters writing in "Springs of Living Water". Each chapter concludes with suggestions for further discussion and the question, "How does this Bible study help us understand and respond to the theme, ‘God, in your grace, transform the world’?" The answers will challenge Christians at many levels with invitations to action in support of faithful witness, unity, justice, service and peace. { 60pp, 120x210mm, September 2005; PB, £5.30, 2825414530:9782825414538 , World Council of Churches } |
![]() | FOR A CULTURE OF LIFE : Transforming Globalization & Violence [Konrad Raiser] Konrad Raiser proposes a transformation of those processes of globalisation which have brought into being a complex system of mutual interdependence as well as mutual suspicions that often end in violence. Beginning with an examination of the root causes and long-term implications of international cooperation and cross-cultural hostility, he argues for the creation of an 'ecumenical space' for dialogue and the building of community. Recognising that religious sentiments and affiliations underlie many contemporary conflicts, Raiser challenges any attempt to co-opt the teachings of 'peace, shalom and salaam' as justifications for violence. Noting the complexity of humanitarian intervention by military powers, he opposes the return to a 'logic of war' and calls for the strengthening of peaceful, political means of conflict resolution. Developing themes suggested in his earlier Risk book, To Be the Church, Raiser calls on the ecumenical movement and its partners to demonstrate through their witness, service and ministry of reconciliation a caring for life in an age of globalization { 173pp, 120x210mm, January 2002; PB, £8.95, 282541364X:9782825413647 , World Council of Churches } |

For All Peoples and All Nations uncovers a remarkable time when that was not so; when, together, those two entities gave rise to a new ideal: universal human rights. The author introduces the reader to the people of many faiths who, in the aftermath of the Second World War, forged one of the world’s most important documents -- the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He recounts the "disproportionate influence of a few committed, persevering and highly effective religious individuals, along with the supporting groups to which they belonged, on efforts during the 1940s to include and elaborate human rights as part of the UN system that was then being created".
