![]() | ALFRED JEWEL : & Other Late Anglo-Saxon Decorated Metalwork [David Hinton] The Alfred Jewel is probably the single most famous archaeological object in England. From the Anglo-Saxon period, the great treasure found in the seventh-century ship-burial at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, is as well-known, but as a collection rather than for any individual object in it. But the distinctive nature of the Jewel with its tantalizing inscription that may refer to King Alfred (871-99), the only English king to be called 'the Great' has a fascination that nothing else can rival. The Jewel has received much attention from scholars since its discovery in 1693, and continues to be discussed in work on the Anglo-Saxon period. In this handbook, recent ideas are reviewed and the significance of new discoveries evaluated, along with pictures and descriptions of other objects relevant to the study of the Jewel. The Handbook focuses on the collections in the Ashmolean that date to the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries AD, but also illustrates objects in other museums. { 96pp, 145x210mm, January 2008; HB, £11.95, 1854442295:9781854442291 / PB, £7.95, 1854442309:9781854442307 , Ashmolean Museum } |

From vases to weapons, and ‘serpent game’ boards to decorated ostrich eggs, this book showcases the richness and diversity of the Museum’s Egyptian collection in beautiful full-colour images with informative captions. The introduction looks at the formation of the Museum’s collection within the context of Egyptology as an emerging discipline full of colourful characters. The Egyptians are one of the most fascinating among the peoples of the ancient world and the Ashmolean’s collection depicts their distinctive culture, its history, religion and art as well as everyday routines and traditions. { 96pp, 194x267mm, November 2008; PB, £14.95, 1854442023:9781854442024 / HB, £19.95, 1854442015:9781854442017 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | ARTHUR EVANS, KNOSSOS & THE PRIEST-KING [S Sherratt] The year 2000 marks the centenary of the start of excavations at the site of Knossos on Crete, the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation which its excavator, Arthur Evans, called 'Minoan' after King Minos of Greek legend. The palace which he uncovered there was originally decorated with frescoed wall paintings, some of them showing figured scenes, which mostly survived only in a fragmentary and incomplete state. One of the most striking fresco images, and one which particularly engaged Evans's imagination, is the controversial figure of the Priest-King, whom Evans regarded as a portrayal of one of the priestly rulers of Knossos. This booklet gives an account of the history of its discovery, its re-creation and the important part it played in Evans's vision of Knossos. { 24pp, 170x240mm, January 2001; PB, £4.95, 1854441426:9781854441423 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM : A History of the Museum & Its' Collections [Arthur MacGregor] The Ashmolean Museum, the oldest public museum in Britain, houses the University of Oxford's unrivalled collection of art and antiquities from Europe, Central Asia and the Far East. Three centuries and more of unbroken history render the Ashmolean one of the most venerable institutions of its' kind in the world. When, in 1683, Elias Ashmole endowed the University of Oxford with the already famous Tradescant collection, many of the exhibits had already been on display for fifty years, extending the origins of the collection to the very threshold of the Stuart era. This book traces the eventful history of the Ashmolean and its collections from its origin as cabinet of curiosities, to proto-scientific institution at the turn of the eighteenth century and to dusty irrelevance at the opening of the nineteenth; the ensuing century saw the Museum's fortunes rise, fall and rise again to culminate in its' refounding as the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology as the result of the tireless energy of Sir Arthur Evans (Keeper 1884-1908) and powerful patrons such as Charles Drury Fortnum. { 80pp, 150x210mm, September 2001; PB, £7.95, 1854441485:9781854441485 / HB, £11.95, 1854441493:9781854441492 , Ashmolean Museum } |

In relation to other major museum collections, therefore, it is young. Yet amounting to over 450 objects, many of which are of spectacular quality and rarity, it is one of the most important collections of its kind in the world, equalled only for the 'golden age' of English silver by the V&A in London and the museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The collection has never been fully catalogued and this will be the first time a complete catalogue has been published. { 220x280mm, January 2009; PB, £350.00, 1854442201:9781854442208 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | BUYID COINAGE : A Die Corpus (322-445AH) [Luke Treadwell] This is a catalogue of medieval Iraqi and Iranian coinage, struck within the 10th-11th centuries AD. The Buyid dynasty ruled in Baghdad, Western Iraq and central Iran for over 100 years (c322-c440 AH). Their coinage is of interest because it is one of the earliest and most plentiful regional coinages of the pre-modern Islamic world. It displays a variety of fabric, morphology and inscriptional content that is exceptional. This catalogue draws on all the major public collections of Islamic coinage in the western world, as well as several private collections, and includes several thousand coins. It describes and illustrates every die identified as belonging to the series and thus represents a new departure in the field of Islamic numismatics, which hitherto has not produced any large-scale die studies. The density of coverage in this catalogue should provide the basis for analysis of many historical problems of a monetary and political nature that have not yet been examined. { 172pp, 215x300mm, April 2001; HB, £60.00, 1854441558:9781854441553 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | CHINESE PAINTINGS & MODERN CHINESE PAINTINGS BOXED SET [Shelagh Vainker] CHINESE PAINTINGS IN THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM, OXFORD -- The Ashmolean Museum's Department of Eastern Art houses a collection of Chinese paintings that has been built up since the 1950s to complement the University's substantial holdings of Chinese bronzes, ceramics and decorative arts. The paintings include several works by early Qing (1644--1911) dynasty artists but its strength lies in the late Qing and twentieth-century paintings, which constitute one of the foremost collections of their type in Europe. This catalogue presents more than two hundred major works, from seventeenth century landscapes, through landscape and figure paintings by modern masters such as Ren Yi, Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong and Fu Baoshi, to recent work by contemporary artists, with inscriptions fully reproduced in Chinese characters, and an extensive bibliography. MODERN CHINESE PAINTINGS: THE REYES COLLECTION IN THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM, OXFORD -- The Reyes Collection of modern Chinese paintings covers the period from the middle of the 19th century until late 1995 when the collection was presented to the Ashmolean Museum. Artistically this period includes paintings which seek to update the tradition, as well as works embodying a response to Japanese or to Western art and works which reflect international art movements of the late 20th century. Politically it is a period that began under the Qing dynasty, which witnessed the founding of the Republic in 1911 and the establishment in 1949 of the People's Republic of China; it was also a period punctuated by unrest in the form of widescale rebellion, the Sino-Japanese (1937-45) war, civil war and, most recently, the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). The plurality of artistic styles that arose in these circumstances, together with the ongoing tension between China's illustrious past and international present, has precluded the decisive formulation of a mainstream in Chinese painting; the Reyes collection, in representing the conservative as well as the innovative painters of each generation, is in keeping with most major collections, public and private, in this field. { May 2001; BS, £32.00, 1854441604:9781854441607 , Ashmolean Museum } |

Prints include the New Year's pictures of the 1950s, the propaganda style woodcuts produced during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period of the 1960s-70s, and those made after China's open door policy of the 1980s up to the present day. The catalogue reflects the way in which artists have responded to these cultural, political and economic transformations through their work and aesthetic ideas.120 works from 67 established Chinese printmakers are reproduced to the highest standard in this catalogue, tracing the development from the first generation of printmaking masters to younger generations. In order to trace their aesthetic and historical development, and their materials and techniques of manufacture Dr Amy Heller, an eminent authority on Himalayan art, examines the geography of trade within the Himalayan and neighbouring regions, the antecedents of these objects in India and the surrounding regions, and developments in the arts from the seventh to the fourteenth century in her introductory essay. ![]() | EMBROIDERIES & SAMPLERS ISLAMIC EGYPT [Marianne Ellis] One of the world's most important collections of medieval Islamic embroideries is to be found in the Department of Eastern Art in Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum. The textiles were collected by the Egyptologist Percy Newberry between 1900 and 1930, while he was living in Cairo. Most of the embroideries were made in Egypt or Syria, they were mainly used as dress items and domestic furnishings, but the collection also has a number of samplers. Much of the material is now fragmentary, but the embroidered designs are still clearly visible. The richness of patterns and the technical brilliance of the majority of pieces make the collection a treasure trove for textile scholars and embroidery enthusiasts alike. The 66 examples of embroideries illustrated are from the Tulunid period (AD868-905), the Fatamid period (AD969-1171), the Ayyubid period (AD1171-1249), and the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria, ending with the Ottoman Conquest in 1517 and demonstrate the wide variety of embroidery stitches and techniques already in use at that time. A large proportion are worked in geometric design but there are also examples of scrolling and Arabesque design, figurative motifs such as birds, animals and fish, and calligraphy. It is possible that some of the comparatively simple open-work techniques were imported to Italy via trade and became the basis for the development of needlelace in Europe. ![]() | ENGLISH DELFTWARE [Anthony Ray] In the course of its two hundred years history, from c1570 to the 1770s when cream-ware came into fashion, English delfware played an increasingly important part in the everyday life of a mainly middle class clientele. By its nature bright and colourful, it was also extremely versatile, adapting itself to the practical needs of the households, and in its decoration, responding to the fashion of the time. Above all, it lent itself admirably to the demand for personalised pieces of all kinds. It is these qualities which have made it so attractive to collectors, especially in recent years. This book illustrates fifty-one examples, the majority from the important collection formed by Robert and Jean Warren but with a selection of pieces, mainly unpublished, from other benefactions, together with purchases and objects excavated in Oxford. { 80pp, 150x210mm, March 2000; PB, £7.95, 1854441299:9781854441294 / HB, £11.95, 1854441302:9781854441300 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | ENGLISH EMBROIDERIES [Mary M Brooks] This handbook explores the Ashmolean Museum's collection of English seventeenth-century embroideries. These intriguing pieces, often made by affluent school girls, include pictorial panels and an elaborate box showing bible stories as well as costume accessories and fanciful items such as a frog-shaped purse. The introductory essay explores how the miniature world of kings and queens, biblical and classical heroes, courtiers and shepherdesses, set in landscapes with lovingly depicted animals and flowers, connects with the turbulent events of the seventeenth century. Detailed photographs reveal the fine stitches and imaginative raised work embroidery techniques we well as the lavish use of metal threads and semi-precious stones. The book will appeal to all those interested in the life of seventeenth-century women as well as to textiles and embroidery specialists. { 96pp, 155x215mm, January 2004; PB, £7.95, 1854441922:9781854441928 / HB, £11.95, 1854441930:9781854441935 , Ashmolean Museum } |

Yet Piero was a successful artist in Florence, celebrated for his imaginative and often unorthodox treatment of classical themes, and for his fascination with nature. The Forest Fire in the Ashmolean Museum is one of his most beautiful and enigmatic pictures. { 25pp, 200x200mm, March 1999; PB, £3.95, 1854441183:9781854441188 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | FRAMES & FRAMINGS IN THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM [Timothy Newbery] Frames fulfil a variety of functions, from the protective to the decorative; they can indicate ownership or they can assert the importance of the paintings they enclose. In their shape and ornamentation, frames are linked to architectural forms or to furniture and interior design, while many styles of decoration can be related to the work of goldsmiths and of sculptors. Few pictures survive in their original frames because of changing ownership: they were re-framed so as to harmonise with different settings, whether in princely galleries or private houses. The way that a picture is framed strongly affects its visual appearance and impact. When a painting retains its original frame, we can appreciate the visual relationship between the two that the artist would have intended. Framings by subsequent owners with different frame styles can tell us much about the taste and priorities of a particular period or place. This book looks at frame history and design in the context of the Ashmolean Museum's collection of frames, and aims to provide a sense of the importance of the picture frame in the history of art as a whole. { 80pp, 145x210mm, February 2003; PB, £7.95, 1854441744:9781854441744 / HB, £11.95, 1854441752:9781854441751 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | FRENCH DRAWINGS & WATERCOLOURS : Poussin to Cezanne [Jon Whiteley] The history of French painting is not the same thing as a history of French drawing, although the two do of course frequently combine. The very greatest French draughtsmen, such as Watteau, Fragonard, Ingres or Degas (all represented in this book) were also amongst the greatest painters. Fifty-two works are illustrated, from a collection of over 2000, from early 17th century chalk drawings by Callot, Stella and Claude Lorraine, through to late 19 century drawings and watercolours by the likes of Manet, Berthe Morisot and Tissot. { 112pp, 150x215mm, January 2002; PB, £7.95, 185444168X:9781854441683 / HB, £11.95, 1854441698:9781854441690 , Ashmolean Museum } |

While recent exhibitions in Italy, America and elsewhere have encouraged the study and appreciation of drawings from this period, the richness and quality of works from British collections is explored here, for the first time, and in a fitting fashion. { 160pp, 220x280mm, October 2003; PB, £14.95, 1854441914:9781854441911 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | HUNT IN THE FOREST BY PAOLO UCCELLO [Catherine Whistler] A masterpiece of the early Renaissance, Paolo Uccello's (1397-1475) 'Hunt in the Forest' is a magical and enigmatic picture. The painting clearly belongs to the last decade of Uccello's career, and stylistic comparisons with the narrative scenes that he painted in the late 1460s in Urbino suggest that 'The Hunt' must date from soon after that. Uccello's lifelong interest in geometry and perspective, together with his skill in depicting animals and landscape, combine in this swansong, a jewel-like painting designed to please a sophisticated audience. The Hunt in the Forest is a rare and tantalising survivor of a particular type of secular painting. A spalliera painting (from spalla, meaning shoulder), it would have been set into the panelling of a room at shoulder height. Scenes from ancient history and mythology, or from medieval romance, were common in spalliera paintings, and many have come down to us. However, the fact that a hunting scene with figures in contemporary dress is elaborately and playfully depicted by a major artist makes this panel virtually unique in Florentine domestic painting of the fifteenth century. Clearly the patron who ordered this picture was a discerning one, familiar with Uccello's distinctive artistic talents. The painting has been in thc collection of the Ashrnolean Museum since 1850. { 24pp, 200x200mm, September 2001; PB, £3.95, 1854441523:9781854441522 , Ashmolean Museum } |

The Turner collection in the Ashmolean Museum is the finest and most representative of his watercolours and drawings outside London, including work from all periods of his life providing a broad survey of his development as a draughtsman. It includes ten watercolours commissioned from the young Turner to be engraved for the Oxford Almanack between 1799 and 1810, and a representative selection of sketches and finished works, over 70 of which were given to the University of Oxford by the artist's friend and champion, John Ruskin, among them 23 watercolours from the celebrated series, The Rivers of France. { 80pp, 205x210mm, May 2000; PB, £9.95, 1854441213:9781854441218 / HB, £12.95, 1854441221:9781854441225 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | JAPANESE DECORATIVE ARTS OF THE MEIJI PERIOD 1868-1912 [Oliver Impey] It is not easy to overstate the cataclysmic effects of the run-up to the implementation of the Meiji ‘Restoration' in Japan in 1868. The changes affected every aspect of Japanese life; a new sense of a single nation, as opposed to a series of regional loyalties, was created. The word Meiji means ‘enlightened government' and the new government had as a primary aim the bringing of Japan into the group of modern western industrial powers. One of the ways the government decided to do this was to demonstrate to the world the brilliance of Japanese craftsmanship. New techniques, such as cloisonné enamel began to be developed for the first time in Japan. Active purchasing has meant the Ashmolean now has a well- represented collection of the highest quality. { 112pp, 210x145mm, September 2005; PB, £7.95, 1854441981:9781854441980 / HB, £11.95, 1854441973:9781854441973 , Ashmolean Museum } |

A full sixty of the finest paintings are discussed in detail individually, divided into sections based on the major schools of painting active in Japan from the Edo period (1615 to 1868) to the modern era. Throughout the discussion, the book highlights the work of artists outside the traditional cultural centres of Edo and Kyoto by including artworks by Nagasaki and Osaka-based artists whose paintings will be less familiar to a western audience. { 254pp, 245x285mm, November 2003; HB, £35.00, 1854441892:9781854441898 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | LIFE & DEATH IN THE IRON AGE [Jennifer Foster] This is an introduction for the general reader, looking at the archaeology of Europe in the last prehistoric period before the Roman conquest (from c800 BC to AD 43). The archaeological collection of the Ashmolean Museums are used to illustrate a series of themes about the lives and deaths of people at this time, their appearance, clothes and ornaments, their economy and trade, how they produced and consumed their food, and the warfare of the period as shown through weapons. The collection at the Ashmolean owes much to Sir John Evans. The excavations and objects from the important early Iron Age cemetery of Hallstatt, Austria, some of which were excavated by Sir John, are covered in some detail. The text is lavishly supplemented by colour illustrations, particularly of exhibits from the Ashmolean Department of Antiquities. { 48pp, 185x245mm, August 2002; PB, £7.95, 1854441795:9781854441799 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | MODERN CHINESE PAINTINGS : The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford [Shelagh Vainker] The Reyes Collection of modern Chinese paintings covers the period from the middle of the 19th century until late 1995 when the collection was presented to the Ashmolean Museum. { 96pp, 175x245mm, September 1996; PB, £12.95, 1854440799:9781854440792 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS ((Ashmolean Handbook Series)) [Jon Whiteley] The Ashmolean’s collection of European stringed instruments is not large but it is very famous. Several of the instruments in the Ashmolean are among the rarest and most beautiful of their kind and most are, in some way, exceptional. The collection was founded on a group of instruments which was given to the museum by the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons in 1939 and has since been increased by two bequests and by an important group of bows and instruments given by Albert Cooper in 1999. The firm of W.E. Hill & Sons was founded in 1880 and by the early 20th century the firm had achieved an unrivalled reputation in making, restoring, and selling stringed instruments. In the course of handling and repairing instruments, the Hills became increasingly aware of the damage that was being inflicted on early viols and violins by constant playing and repeated restoration. This concern gave rise to the idea of donating a select group of rare instruments to a museum where they would be preserved from further harm, and the first instruments were handed over in 1939. The present handbook discusses and illustrates every stringed instrument in the collection and is chiefly intended for the many visitors to the Hill Collection and for the wider public who might wish for more information about the instruments and some background history. { 96pp, 145x210mm, October 2008; PB, £7.95, 1854442007:9781854442000 / HB, £11.95, 185444199X:9781854441997 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | NEW FLOWERING : 1000 Years of Botanical Art [Shirley Sherwood; Foreword by HRH The Prince on Wales] An exhibition of one thousand years of botanical art displayed in the Ashmolean’s leading exhibition and providing the unique opportunity to compare illustrations by contemporary artists alongside remarkable botanical art of the past. Chosen by Dr Shirley Sherwood from her acclaimed collection of botanical painting and from the rich historical treasures of Oxford’s libraries and museums these inspiring plant portraits stand at the interface between art and science. The oldest exhibit is a drawing of a thistle made by a monk from the late 11th century and the most recent painting, by Angela Mirro, is of a rare Peruvian slipper orchid discovered in 2002. By contrasting the old with the new throughout the show, it becomes apparent that the criteria for botanical illustration have not changed throughout the centuries. { 200pp, 220x280mm, May 2005; PB, £20.00, 1854442066:9781854442062 , Ashmolean Museum } |
![]() | OPULENCE & DEVOTION : Brazilian Baroque Art [Catherine Whistler] From the late 16th to the end of the 18th centuries, when Brazil was a Portuguese colony, painting and sculpture was almost entirely religious in nature. Fired with zeal for the conversion of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, Jesuit, Franciscan and Benedictine missionaries exploited the sensory impact of painting, sculpture, music and drama to promote the faith there. The opulent, majestic and theatrical Catholicism that gradually took root appealed to the imagination and to the senses -- as did the Baroque art of Counter-Reformation Europe. This book has been published to mark the first exhibition in Britain of Brazilian Baroque Art. Edited and largely compiled by Dr Catherine Whistler, the book also contains an art-historical survey by Dr Cristina Avila, of The Federal University of Minas Gerais, and an essay on Patronage and Expressions of the Baroque by Professor A J R Russell-Wood of The Johns Hopkins University. The colour plates demonstrate the vitality and virtuosity of the individual sculptures, domestic altarpieces, and pieces of liturgical silver loaned to the exhibition from private collections and Museums in Brazil. { 96pp, 245x245mm, October 2001; PB, £14.95, 1854441574:9781854441577 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | PILGRIMAGE : The Sacred Journey [Ruth Barnes & Crispin Branfoot] This book explores the role of pilgrimage in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and the religions that developed in India. It was written to coincide with an exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (2006), but it is not a catalogue of the display. It is intended to be read independently, as it explores attitudes to pilgrimage in the different religions; it also includes accounts of individual pilgrimage, both historical and contemporary. Common themes emerge, regardless of religious affiliation. The departure from daily life is part of all pilgrimages. Along the way, the journey may lead past lesser shrines and sacred landscapes. The visit to the central shrine, the final goal of the journey, culminates in an intense spiritual experience. Reliquaries and souvenirs many help to hold on to this moment and transfer its power back into everyday life. Pilgrimage survives as an important aspect of religious awareness and identification to this day. { 132pp, 220x280mm, February 2006; PB, £14.95, 1854442155:9781854442154 , Ashmolean Museum } |

An exhibition of his work was held Oxford from Decemer 2004 to March 2005 and included paintings from all periods of his career, documenting a change in style from traditional gongbi birds and flowers, to sweeping landscapes in ink. Some early paintings are executed on Ming dynasty silk from the imperial treasury, while several of the later landscapes in ink on paper depict scenery from the route of the Long March, which Pu travelled in 1956 with a group of artists as part of the celebrations of the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army. The paintings came from the collections of the artist’s family in Hong Kong, and from a private collection in Oxford and were displayed here in public for the first time. ![]() | SIR JOHN EVANS 1823-1908 : Antiquity, Commerce & Natural Science in the Age of Darwin [Arthur MacGregor (ed)] The figure of Sir John Evans might stand as an exemplar for so many aspects of Victorian virtue. From beginnings as a clerk in the paper industry, he rose by hard work and astute judgement (not to mention advantageous marriage) to the peak of his profession. He became a phenomenon amongst the learned societies, holding office in the Royal Society, Numismatic Society, Society of Antiquaries, Geological Society and others. A thrice-married family man, he enjoyed a wide friendship, drawn mostly from the scholarly and scientific community and characterised as the ‘Darwinist community’; with a strong sense of purpose they sought ways to extend the principles of natural selection to numismatic and antiquarian practice, and to establish protocols for the communication of visual evidence. Evans played key roles in topics as diverse as the water supply for the metropolis and the establishment of human antiquity. His archaeological and numismatic collections were internationally famous and formed the basis for a body of printed works produced over fifty years of sustained effort. In this easily readable but scholarly volume, fourteen authors examine Evans' enduring significance in a study that firmly establishes his place in the canon of leading figures of Victorian society. { 326pp, 180x260mm, May 2008; HB, £45.00, 1854442376:9781854442376 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | SYLLOGE OF ISLAMIC COINS IN THE ASHMOLEAN, VOLUME 9 : Iran After the Mongol Invasion [Stephen Album] This volume (the second to be published in the series) contains nearly 1800 coins of the 13th-19th centuries from Iran, Afghanistan and neighbouring lands. It covers the following dynasties: Ilkhanid, Timürid, Qara Quyunlu, Aq Quyunlu, Safavid, Qaja, Durrãni and Barakzäy. They are arranged by mint, and chronologically with mints, six maps and index of names and titles. The introduction offers not only a guide to the use of the catalogue, but also sets out an agenda for the study of the monetary history of the period. Late medieval Iranian coinage offers the historian the earliest opportunity to examine the relationship between coinage issue in the Islamic world and the monetary policies which underlie them. The collections which contribute to this volume are all housed in the Heberden Coin Room, Ashmolean Museum. The most important of these is undoubtedly that part of the Thorburn collection which was acquired by the Coin Room in 1966. The Ashmolean collection began in the late 17th century but included few Islamic coins until the acquisition of the J.B. Elliott collection in 1859. Since then the collection of Islamic coins has grown to more than 9000 pieces, not including the Ottoman Empire, the Muslim states of India or modern machine-struck coinage. This catalogue is the second in a projected series of ten volumes, covering the Ashmolean's permanent collection of Islamic coins and that of Samir Shamma, one of the finest private collections of Islamic coins ever formed in the Middle East. { 240pp, 210x295mm, September 2001; HB, £65.00, 1854441590:9781854441591 , Ashmolean Museum } |

![]() | TURNER'S OXFORD [Colin Harrison] From his childhood visits to his uncle at Sunningwell, Turner was fascinated by Oxford: no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. Indeed, his first documented drawing, made at the age of 12, was a copy of one of Rooker's designs for the ‘Oxford Almanack’, and it was followed by a substantial group of early drawings and sketches remarkable for the astonishingly rapid technical progress they display. His most important early commission was for 10 watercolours to be engraved as headpieces for the Oxford Almanack, the first of which was published in 1799. This book brings together all his views of the city and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works.
