ADDICTION BY PRESCRIPTION : One Woman's Triumph & Fight for Change [Joan E Gadsby] In 1966, Joan Gadsby’s four-year-old son died of a brain tumour. In response, her family physician prescribed a 'chemical cocktail' of tranquillisers, sleeping pills and anti-depressants -- an act that initiated Gadsby’s slow descent into an abyss of unrecognised addiction. Over the next 20 years, Gadsby’s career, her family relationships, her financial security and her health were all threatened. She was on various occasions arrested, restrained, and sedated as a result of the paradoxical side effects of the drugs. It was only after she unintentionally overdosed in 1990 that she found out the insidious effects of the drugs, stopped taking them and went through the 'hell' of withdrawal -- alone. Gadsby has emerged from her addiction to become a health and wellness consultant to corporations, governments, healthcare organisations. She is a tireless advocate for systemic change and accountability of prescribed sedative/hypnotic drugs. She interviewed thousands -- from consumers to doctors to pharmaceutical representatives and government officials as she conducted extensive international research -- in her quest to expose the shocking truth of the depth and breadth of addiction by prescription which affects hundreds of thousands of men and women world-wide who become 'accidental addicts'. { 304pp, 155x230mm, May 2005; PB, £11.99, 1894694368:9781894694360 , Granville Island Publishing (Key Porter Books) }

He filled each day with as much as he could, especially outdoors activities. Wallace was also passionate about cultural and social activities and enjoyed many of the events and venues Vancouver offered. NO LAUGHING MATTER : Adventure, Activism & Politics [Margaret A Mitchell] The woman who first brought the issue of spousal abuse to the forefront in Canada presents her memoirs in this interesting, informative, entertaining and often humorous book. Margaret Mitchell is a social activist who pioneered community development in Vancouver, was a courageous feminist MP for Vancouver East, and an international adventuress. Her book is a testament to the struggles and achievements of women MPs, and chronicles her life's adventures and work. As an NDP Member of Parliament, Margaret Mitchell inspired generations of women with her public stand against "wife beating" with her vocal support for women's equality. She spent 14 years in the House of Commons advocating for affordable housing, multiculturalism, and the rights of poor people. Ms Mitchell worked tirelessly on issues that are alive today, including redress for the Chinese Head Tax, and childcare. The Margaret Mitchell Fund for Women, which Ms Mitchell established after her retirement, continues to support women's self-help projects and scholarships. Proceeds of book sales will also accrue to the fund. Prior to entering political life, Margaret Mitchell pioneered community development in Vancouver, helping people to organise and improve life in the city's poorer neighbourhoods. Many organisations she worked with to achieve greater citizen participation are still active today in one form or another and Ms Mitchell acknowledges the many people who participated with her in these endeavours. NO LAUGHING MATTER is an engaging story that will have broad public appeal and will be of particular interest to those whose lives Ms Mitchell has touched during her time as a community advocate, politician and friend. It will also interest those involved in political science, women's studies and local history. { 248pp, 155x230mm, November 2007; PB, £13.50, 1894694635:9781894694636 , Granville Island Publishing }

Afraid of the consequences, he runs away from a town in northern British Columbia. Hitchhiking, he criss crosses the prairies from Alberta to Manitoba, working at back-breaking, menial jobs -- at a feed mill, a meat packing plant, on constructions sites and on an oil rig. After years on the road, he settles down in Vancouver and ends up in Oakalla Prison. After serving his time, will schooling and a girlfriend help him break out of this cycle? Or will drugs on the Downtown East Side, another horrific crime and the courts, decide his fate? { 270pp, 155x230mm, March 2005; PB, £11.99, 1894694341:9781894694346 , Granville Island Publishing }

PICTURE COOKBOOK : No-Cook Recipes for the Special Chef: Volume one [Joyce Dassonville & Ehren McDow] There has never been a cookbook like this, nor has there been a book that could improve the lives of families with special needs members more than this book has the potential to do. After a futile search to buy a book for teaching her daughter to cook, the author eventually wrote the book she had sought to buy. The first in a series of four cookbooks for budding chefs with special needs including autism, attention deficit disorder, Down's Syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, illiteracy, advanced or young age, THE PICTURE COOKBOOK is the result of the author's four years of efforts teaching her own autistic daughter to cook and bake. The title says it all, but the book is more than a series of step-by-step pictures leading the chef to a proud completion. All aspects of avoiding injury and ensuring success have been cleverly thought through. Using modern kitchen tools, the authors have written recipes that are safe for anyone to use, be they young children, confused adults or people with special needs. Furthermore, for the benefit of teachers and caregivers, instructions on the process of teaching someone to use the cookbook are detailed, as well as discussions of issues that can arise. The picture index allows cooks to easily spot their favourite recipes without the need to read or understand names. The book boasts lay-flat binding, extensive colour-coding, and beautifully laid out colour photography. { 112pp, 215x280mm, October 2007; PB, £20.99, 189469452X:9781894694520 , Granville Island Publishing }

SMOKE-FREE : How One City Successfully Banned Smoking in all Indoor Public Places [Barbara McLintock] Award-winning journalist and author Barbara McLintock uses the example of BC's capital city, Victoria, as a case study to show how a region can not only pass legislation, but implement it and enforce it with such effectiveness that the compliance rate now exceeds 99 per cent. The story is a dramatic narrative in its own right, replete with details of harrowing public meetings, widespread early defiance of the law in drinking establishments, an often-hostile media climate and even death threats to those responsible for implementation and enforcement. But it also shows the benefits of enacting such a law, not just through improved air quality for patrons and workers but also how such a bylaw results in a reduced smoking rate in the population and growing popularity for the measure, even amongst smokers. This book is a must-read for every non-smokers' rights advocate, every public health official and every local or state legislator who's exploring the idea of enacting smoke-free legislation. But it also makes compelling reading for anyone interested in a true-life insider drama that offers a close-up view of a controversial public policy. { 224pp, 155x230mm, October 2004; PB, £11.99, 1894694317:9781894694315 , Granville Island Publishing }

SPEEDIEST LAND TRAVELLER : A History of Alberta Auto Racing [Richard McDonell] Automobile racing, the world's fastest sport, began almost as soon as the first cars were built. It developed and thrived in the Province of Alberta, far removed from the world power centres of racing. Former race driver Richard McDonell spins a story of the heroes and geniuses who built and raced cars against the best on the planet, and of the developers, politicians, promoters and wheeler-dealers who gave them places to practise. At times hilarious and others tragic, this book paints a memorable portrait of an exciting sport and the century of change in which it grew. This is must-have book for anyone with an interest in auto racing or Alberta history. { 308pp, 155x230mm, April 2005; PB, £16.50, 189469435X:9781894694353 , Granville Island Publishing }

Imprisoned in his suit of humanity, he finds hope and strength of the human spirit. He navigates through pain fishing for answers in this wind and liquidates our souls with desire and passion bound by wire explosions. Open these pages and dance with him in a world faded fast." -- R David Stephens. { 68pp, 155x230mm, March 2007; PB, £9.99, 1894694511:9781894694513 , Granville Island Publishing }
SUCCESS STORIES FROM THE FRONTLINE : Intellectual Disabilities & Mental Health [Madeline Hombert (ed)] An anthology of first-person stories by patients and their families, "Success Stories from the Frontline" is a frank depiction of what life is like for people with both a developmental disability as well as a mental illness (for example, autism combined with obsessive-compulsive disorder). Acclaimed by psychiatric professionals, this is essential reading for those who have a loved one with this double diagnosis or who work in the mental health field. These stories are real and powerful. A useful resource, the book’s summary explains causes of mental illness and the diagnostic process, while the glossary provides succinct explanations of mental disorders, symptoms and medications. The book highlights the need to raise awareness of this dual-diagnosis population and to provide more resources to address their special vulnerabilities. { 192pp, 155x230mm, May 2007; PB, £8.99, 0978146700:9780978146702 , Granville Island Publishing }

THEY CALLED ME OTHERWISE : Stories of Growing Up in Afirca, Scotland & Canada [Bill Galloway] The Scots conquered the world. They just forgot to tell anyone about it. This book remedies that situation. Packed with humour and wisdom, it is at once a set of light-hearted anecdotes, an exemplary story of the Scot's diaspora and an autobiography that shows how one man overcame the obstacles set against him. As he rambles through several continents, Bill pokes fun at his own ineptness and celebrates his hard-won successes. Colourful vignettes weave a tapestry of (mis)adventure, perseverance and fortunate coincidence. Bill is an engaging observer, somewhat innocently out of touch, voicing deeper truths. This book has serious lessons for people who may forever feel misplaced. { 148pp, 140x215mm, August 2005; PB, £9.50, 1894694376:9781894694377 , Granville Island Publishing }

However, Joe's life and the case get more complicated as he begins a relationship with Demme, a woman whose search for her missing past ties into environmental issues arising from the run-up to the world's greatest athletic event in 2010. Echoing Greek mythology, the politics of the city intertwine with the personal lives of its residents as they search for truth, meaning, and belonging. Faith battles with reason to find solutions -- to personal questions, ecological destruction, and the unknown fate of the two missing children. { 250pp, 140x215mm, October 2007; PB, £11.50, 1894694554:9781894694551 , Granville Island Publishing }

WESTWOOD : Everyone's Favourite Racing Circuit [Tom Johnston] Westwood (or 'Wetwood' as some called it) was the first purpose-built automobile road-racing track in Canada. Its location in Coquitlam on the slopes of British Columbia's coastal mountains meant that it often rained, but the rest of the time it may well have been the most beautiful racing circuit in the world. The track was built and owned by the Sports Car Club of British Columbia. SCCBC members viewed it as a special place where family members of racing enthusiasts grew up over its 32 seasons. The track ran just about any kind of racing that came along for cars, motorcycles and karts, but was best known for its spectacular races for smaller formula cars, Formula Atlantic in particular. Sadly, in 1990 Westwood suffered the common fate of racetracks located near expanding cities world-wide and was converted into a housing development and golf course. { 120pp, 280x215mm, September 2007; PB, £32.50, 189469449X:9781894694490 , Granville Island Publishing }

WORKS ON CLOTH : Imagery by Artists of Baker Lake, Nunavut [Marion Scott Gallery; Introduction by Robert Kardosh] The small northern Canadian community of Baker Lake has been home to some of the foremost Inuit artists of contemporary times. While recognised widely for its stone sculpture and prints, it is in the realm of textile art that this remote community has made its most important mark on Canadian art. Invented by Baker Lake women artists in the early 1970s and practised to this day, Inuit wall hangings are a form of appliqué in which images are cut from felt and sewn to wool backings, often enlivened by embroidered surfaces. At once contemporary and traditional, these colourful images range in subject matter from the supernatural to the folkloric and ethnographic. { 62pp, 205x205mm, May 2005; PB, £14.99, 0921634366:9780921634362 , Granville Island Publishing }
