CHINESE THROUGH TONE & COLOR [Nathan Dummitt] Book & CD. Most linguists believe that writing was unveiled in China during the latter half of the 2nd millennium BC Despite the many thousands of written characters however, there are approximately 1,700 possible syllables in Mandarin, compared to over 8,000 in English. As a result, there are many homophones, distinguished in written Chinese by the use of different characters to represent each one. Not all the characters are pronounced using the same tone, so to Chinese ears they sound different. To Westerner ears, however, they all sound the same. It is even possible to write a test in Chinese using only one syllable, pronounced with different tones. The well known story by Chinese linguist Zhao Yuanren -- Story of Shi Eating the Lions -- uses nothing but the sound ''shi". This book offers a new, intuitive method for more effectively mastering spoken Mandarin Chinese. It assigns a colour to each of the four tones in Mandarin, creating a psychological, synaesthetic resonance between written characters, colour and sound. Sample sentences and grammatical patterns are printed in colour to reinforce the association between tone and colour. With practice, each character generates a colour association, and the tone for the word can therefore be recalled immediately and effortlessly -- a true asset to any beginner learning Mandarin. Designed as an engaging introduction to 100 primary characters, the book also contains an audio CD of the lessons and tones, as well as downloadable files and artwork for mp3 players or computers. Compact, well designed and innovative, it is perfect for a student interested in mastering spoken Chinese while simultaneously studying the written characters. { 250pp, 135x135mm, September 2008; PB, £13.50, 0781812046:9780781812047 , Hippocrene Books }
COOKING FROM CHINA'S FUJIAN PROVINCE [Jacqueline Newman] Though Fujian, a south-eastern province of China, is home to one of China's best cuisines, it is barely known outside of China. This landmark volume gives us the province's savoury fish and meat dishes, wonderful teas, soups, stews, congees, noodles, and fire pots. With roots in early Mill food culture, Fujianese food benefits from the abundance of products found on the local mountains, flatlands and extensive coastline. Rice, wheat, and sweet potatoes are staples of the Fujianese cuisine. Fish and meat are often mixed to great effect, incorporating both sweet and pungent flavours. Two or more broths or soups served with these mixed dishes complete such fine repasts. Buddha Jumping the Wall is a typical dish, combining a myriad of ingredients from both the mountains and the sea: shark's fin, abalone, scallops, ham, chicken, mushrooms, yams, medlar, scallions, and garlic, to name hut a few. Crossing Bridge Noodles and Braised Meat in Wine Sauce are also great favourites, and dishes such as New Year Money Bags and Steamed Sea Cucumber Pockets are equally popular. With 200 recipes, photographs, cultural and historical backgrounds, and twenty menus for everyday meals and holiday banquets, this is a truly comprehensive volume for gourmands, anthropologists and foodies. { 200pp, 155x230mm, July 2008; HB, £16.99, 078181183X:9780781811835 , Hippocrene Books }

DRESSED TO RULE : 18th Century Court Attire in the Mactaggart Art Collection [John E Vollmer] Art takes on many forms. In this selection of Asian court attire, dating from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the phrase "you are what you wear" resonates. Vollmer journeys back to the thirteenth-century Chinese Empire, where ancestors of the ruling Manchu conquerors dressed fittingly. These exquisite costumes remind us that although royalty once set fashion standards the way that celebrities do today, these garments also promoted distinct national and political messages to help keep a ruling minority in power for nearly three centuries. Dressed to Rule is a guide to the exhibit, of the same name, appearing at the University of Alberta in 2007. { 60pp, 280x250mm, October 2007; PB, £17.99, 1551952149:9781551952147 , University of Alberta Press }

This book follows that format. { 32pp, 150x210mm, February 2003; PB, £4.95, 1854441833:9781854441836 , Ashmolean Museum }
PU QUAN & HIS GENERATION : Imperial Painters of Twentieth Century China [Shelagh Vainker & James Lin] Pu Songchuang (1913-1991) was born into the last generation of the Qing imperial family, a cousin of the last emperor Pu Yi. An exhibition of his work was held Oxford from Decemer 2004 to March 2005 and included paintings from all periods of his career, documenting a change in style from traditional gongbi birds and flowers, to sweeping landscapes in ink. Some early paintings are executed on Ming dynasty silk from the imperial treasury, while several of the later landscapes in ink on paper depict scenery from the route of the Long March, which Pu travelled in 1956 with a group of artists as part of the celebrations of the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army. The paintings came from the collections of the artist’s family in Hong Kong, and from a private collection in Oxford and were displayed here in public for the first time. Most have never before been published. { 96pp, 175x245mm, December 2004; PB, £12.95, 185444204X:9781854442048 , Ashmolean Museum }

FICTION & POETRY
ALL ELSE IS BONDAGE : Non-Volitional Living [Wei Wu Wei] These thirty-four powerful essays, poems, and dialogs based on Taoist and Buddhist thought constitute a guide to what the author calls 'non-volitional living' -- the ancient understanding that our efforts to grasp our true nature are futile. While this may sound disheartening, fully comprehending this truth is the key to our liberation. This final volume in the author's output of eight books will make his many fans' collections of his works complete. The pseudonymous author, one of the earliest and most original interpreters of Buddhism, belongs with Reps, Watts, and Kapleau on the bookshelves of serious students of Eastern spiritual thought. { 75pp, 135x210mm, September 2004; PB, £8.99, 159181023X:9781591810230 , Sentient Publications }
ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS (SHUI HU CHUAN) [Shi Nai'an & Luo Guanzhong; Translated by Pearl S Buck] This translation of a Chinese classic (14th Century) is the epic tale of a band of patriots in China during the latter part of the Sung Dynasty and is considered by most to be one of the three or four greatest novels in Chinese literature. Shui hu chuan (water margin chronicles) is the adventure of a band of 108 outlaws (105 men and 3 women) struggling to help the Emperor rid himself of the despotic prime minister. Like Robin Hood, the bandit kings refer to themselves as the 'gallant fraternity'. They come out to harass the authorities and to attempt to solicit followers to overthrow a corrupt government in the name of the Emperor. Filled with ghosts, innkeepers who make hamburgers of their guests, giants of superhuman strength, beautiful women in distress, wily intellectuals and crafty merchants, this is a timeless tale of love and adventure. This is an action thriller packed with bigger than life heroes. It has the obvious college adoption market but also a larger audience that have read Dream of the Red Chamber, Journey to the West (Monkey), or Three Kingdoms. It will also appeal to the martial arts world. Shaolin monks named some of their movements after these heroes... like Wu Song -- 'Step Back and Ride the Tiger'. This book has chivalry, Buddhism, Confucianism, honour, humour, and tragedy. It is the War and Peace of the Orient. { 698pp, 215x280mm, October 2006; PB, £11.50, 1559213035:9781559213035 , Moyer Bell Ltd }

PHILOSOPHY & RELIGION

ZEN, SIMPLY SITTING : A Zen Monk's Commentary on the Fukanzazengi by Master Dogen [Philippe Coupey] Long-time Zen teacher Philippe Coupey offers readers a fresh, sometimes irreverent, perspective of an ancient classic -- the Fukanzazengi, a short basic text on how to practice zazen, written by the Master Dogen in 1227. The Fukanzazengi is highly venerated within the Zen tradition, and is systematically recited in Zen temples. Dogen's actual text is only three to four pages long, yet it has been a source of inspiration and guidance for both beginners and advanced students for centuries. What's new in ZEN, SIMPLY SITTING is that Dogen's text has been put into everyday English, and given a contemporary context by Philippe Coupey. Only a few other formal commentaries on this text are available today. Some are highly scholarly, and therefore too heavy for the average reader. Others lack the guts and immediacy of Coupey's approach to this timeless teaching. The commentaries contained here are based on the work of Coupey's own distinguished master Taisen Deshimaru, the Soto Zen teacher who brought Zen to Europe. { 120pp, 140x215mm, December 2006; PB, £9.99, 1890772615:9781890772611 , Hohm Press }

OPEN SECRET : Second Edition [Wei Wu Wei] One of the best-loved of Wei Wu Wei's books, 'Open Secret' enlightens us as to the true nature of the self, as well as time, space, and enlightenment itself. The work includes extensive commentary on the Heart Sutra, regarded by Buddhists as the summation of the Buddha's wisdom. The pseudonymous author studied deeply in Eastern and Western philosophy and metaphysics, along with the esoteric teachings of the great religions. In his writing he distils this knowledge into uniquely elegant prose -- full of humour, metaphors, profundity, and his essential understanding of the open secret of life. { 206pp, 140x215mm, February 2004; PB, £10.99, 1591810140:9781591810148 , Sentient Publications }

TENTH MAN : The Great Joke (Which Made Lazarus Laugh) [Wei Wu Wei] In the years since Wei Wu Wei's work was originally published, his stature has only increased. He joins Paul Reps, Alan Watts, and Philip Kapleau as one of the earliest and most profound Western interpreters of Zen Buddhism and Taoist philosophies. Drawing on the ancient traditions of Buddhism, Taoism, and Advaita Vedanta, Wei Wu Wei brings a very different perspective to the conventional notions about time, love, thought, language, and reincarnation. In poetry, dialogs, epigrams, and essays he attempts to right our minds from their upside down view of existence and stop us in the tracks of our spiritual journey. If there is no self to 'enlighten', then there is no need for a path to enlightenment. { 234pp, 155x230mm, February 2003; PB, £10.99, 1591810078:9781591810070 , Sentient Publications }

CHINESE MEDICINE
ARCHETYPAL ACUPUNCTURE : Healing with the Five Elements [Gary Dolowich MD] Acupuncturists have used the Chinese model of the Five Elements for three thousand years to balance ch'i, the vital force of the body. This book explains to both acupuncturists and the general public how to work with this map of energy and apply it diagnose physical illness, resolve emotional imbalances, and navigate the stages of life. Written by an MD who has taught in Chinese medical colleges for over twenty years, this book explores the elements as universal symbols, thereby integrating ancient Chinese wisdom with modern Jungian psychology. The book draws upon case histories, spiritual poetry (especially Rilke and Rumi), classic sources such as the I Ching (sometimes called the soul of Chinese medicine), and examples from contemporary culture in order to bring the elements alive. Of particular interest are chapters devoted to the interface of Eastern and Western Medicine, Chinese numerology from one (Tao) to eight (I Ching trigrams), spiritual aspects of the elements, archetypal patterns in popular culture (particularly the television series Seinfield), and a conclusion that discusses how to cultivate a life in harmony with the rhythms of nature. The goal is to revitalise traditional teachings for the modern world - and in the process bring East and West together. Through an archetypal approach to Chinese medicine, we can gain fresh insights into the roots of illness, while uncovering a positive vision of wellness and the healing process. We may even discover a way to heal the seemingly insurmountable problems of modern times, which have their origins in the widespread alienation from nature and from our own inner nature. { 311pp, 155x230mm, July 2004; PB, £13.50, 0972833900:9780972833905 , AtlasBooks (Jade Mountain Publishing) }

This book, on medicinal plants and their healing powers, is a compilation of articles written for Asian Age by the author. CHINESE CUISINE : Beijing Style [Lee Hwa Lin] How is Beijing cuisine different from Szechwan, Shanghai, Cantonese, or Taiwanese cuisines? Being the ancient capital and cultural centre, Beijing cuisine has integrated the essence of the imperial court banquets and Northern tribal dishes. CHINESE STYLE APPETIZERS [Lee Hwa Lin] Chinese appetisers, also called platters, offer delectable taste experiences for those who wish to sample unique Asian hors d'oeuvres which will delight their palate. The expert use of limited ingredients such as various seafood's, pressed bean curd, dried small fish and other simple braised soy foods assure the diner of gastronomically pleasure. Although limited in ingredients, the variety and scope of Chinese appetisers can be extended by embracing their 'Appetising Spirit'. This 'spirit' means that any dish can be made into a tasty appetiser if prepared before hand and special seasonings are used. For the cold mixed dishes (salads), sanitary conditions and freshness of ingredients are crucial. With the new recipes presented in this book, appetisers are not just limited to cold mixed dish platters. Through painstaking research, we have created 92 fine and delicate recipes which combine the unique regional flavours of various Chinese provinces. In addition, many of these dishes may also be served as a main course, further augmenting the reader's choices for home cooked meal. { 93pp, 185x260mm, December 1998; PB, £13.50, 0941676692:9780941676694 , Wei-Chuan Publishing }
