ART WARRIOR
[Zbigniew Kupczynski]
From his childhood in Poland just before WWII, his study of art in Paris, his two marriages and the birth of his daughters, to his emigration to Canada, Kupczynski has recorded his colourful views of life on canvas and paper. In this book, he documents the important milestones in both his private and public life, including that he was the first artist to hang his paintings at the Barbakan, a reconstructed wall in Warsaw that joined the Old City with the New that became a famous exhibition space and drew many more artists. Like his paintings, his book shows that he loves women, animals, music and colour.

ON THE FIELD OF GLORY
[Henryk Sienkiewicz]
Sienkiewicz, one of the greatest storytellers in world literature, introduces a memorable cast of characters, ready for battle, duelling, or love in this last completed historical novel of the Nobel Prize winner. Breathing with life, gusto and passion, this book is set in one of the most turbulent and critical periods of European history. Above all it is the story of the tumultuous love between Anulka and Jacek, in what is the most lyrical of all Sienkiewicz love stories. This groundbreaking new translation also includes a new epilogue, narrating the events leading up to the glorious victory of the Christian forces led by King John Sobieski III. This epilogue has been carefully constructed by Miroslaw Lipinski, the translator, using seasonal historical accounts by Count John Sobieski (a distant relative of the king) and Count A J Orchowski.

WARSAW SPRING
[Heather Kirk]
Heather Kirk's WARSAW SPRING is designated for 'young adults'. This 'old adult' enjoyed it thoroughly and admires Kirk's success, particularly in the character of Eva, the narrator. She is eighteen years old and totally alienated from everyone in her Edmonton world. Her mother, Magda, her step-father, George, even her beloved Polish grandmother, Babka, all of them are completely outside of Eva's understanding and sympathy. Kirk is good at the dialogue that Eva engages in with others -- and especially good at her own internal dialogue. When she runs away to Poland to find her relatives, and, she hopes, her father whom she has never seen, she begins a rocky maturing journey that was to me completely convincing. The climax for Eva is a dual experience -- being taken to see the former hell of Auschwitz where unimaginable evil was done to millions, and then the wonderfully moving blessing of the Pope's inspirational progress through his beloved homeland. We leave Eva in the process of her maturing, often stumbling but already a very different young woman from the former cynical, angry, self-despising rebel. She demands and earns our sympathetic involvement. One volume is not enough to satisfy this reader -- her springtime is an engrossing story. I look forward to her summer blooming

STRANGE ODYSSEY OF POLAND'S NATIONAL TREASURES, 1939-1961
: A Polish-Canadian Story
[Gordon Swoger]
This book tells the story of the Polish national treasures, their evacuation from their homeland under perilous conditions after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and their subsequent removal to western Europe and then to Canada. At the end of the war two Polish governments, a Communist one in Warsaw and a non-Communist one in London, vied for control of the national treasures. Before long the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, the RCMP, and the Canadian and Quebec governments all became involved in the desperate hide-and-seek confrontation between the two Polish governments. Eventually, in February 1961, the release of the historic treasures was negotiated and they were returned to their native land, twenty-two years after their wartime departure. It was indeed a long voyage home!

AT THE MERCY OF STRANGERS
: Survival in Nazi Occupied Poland
[Gitel Hopfeld; Translated from Polish & Edited by Simcha Simchovitch]
An important addition to Holocaust literature for a number of reasons. It is a document about the survival of one individual and her two children. In and of itself, as a document and a first hand account about survival during the Holocaust, it is worth reading. The book is important because it documents how Polish friends, acquaintances and even strangers helped to ensure the survival of one Jewish family during the bleak days of the Holocaust. These acts of bravery by individuals and families, at grave risk to themselves, is fully documented here, with names, incidents and places. Ordinary farmers, the headmaster of the Sadurki railway station, the regional leader of the underground Polish Army, two priests...each one, in their own way, contributed to the survival of Gitel Hopfeld and her children. It is vital to ensure that the ‘mercy of strangers’ during the most horrific of times is not forgotten and that these acts of bravery become the genuine measure of humanity.
