ANCIENT AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES
[C R Twidale]
Some parts of the Australian landscape are more than 100 million years old. The dinosaurs roamed a land in which Kakadu, the Macdonnell and Flinders ranges, the Arcoona Plateau and the Mt Lofty Ranges, and many parts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia and the Eastern Uplands were recognisably present. The occurrence of very old surfaces in Australia is described on a regional basis. How the surfaces have been dated is explained. Australia is noted for its old rocks and fossils. Many of its landscape elements also are very old, and very old plant species have taken refuge in these ancient landscapes.

BRITISH & CONTINENTAL GOLD & SILVER IN THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM
: 3-Volume Set
[Tim Schroder]
The collection of British silver at the Ashmolean Museum has all, with one notable exception (a tankard of 1574 given in 1790) been acquired since shortly after World War 2. In relation to other major museum collections, therefore, it is young. Yet amounting to over 450 objects, many of which are of spectacular quality and rarity, it is one of the most important collections of its kind in the world, equalled only for the 'golden age' of English silver by the V&A in London and the museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The collection has never been fully catalogued and this will be the first time a complete catalogue has been published.

DON'T COME BACK UNTIL YOU FIND IT
: Tales from an Antiques Dealer
[Bruce Newman]
It is the early 1940s, and a horse-drawn wooden cart works its way down 'the strip' -- Manhattan's Upper East Side. The driver loads his cart at various opulent buildings -- with help from thankful supers -- taking away tenants' unwanted goods. Returning downtown, the cart's booty will help the fledgling Newel Art Gallery become one of the most influential decorative arts and antiques galleries in the nation. Bruce Newman's new book chronicles his fifty-year career in the decorative arts/antiques arena, discovering, acquiring, and selling art and antiques from all over the world. Newman recounts the early days of being mentored by his father and his own tenure, during which he often dealt with famous clients such as Jackie Kennedy, Dustin Hoffman, and Woody Allen. Finally, he brings his expertise to bear on ways in which a buyer of antiques can feel more confident in their own abilities. Everyone from 'Antiques Roadshow' fans to antiques novices and mavens will find this book a treasure trove of information and entertainment.

TREASURES FROM THE MISTY MOUNTAINS
: A Collector's Guide to Tolkien
[James H Gillam]
It has been very difficult over the years for collectors to know just what has been produced from the works of Tolkien, and where it can be purchased. There is not, and has never been, any 'official' Lord of the Rings cataloguing. Clear and specific documentation has been almost impossible to find, and any listing that has been available has been a patchwork at best. Over the last few years, the Internet has become a great source of assistance through various webrings that connect the many Lord of the Rings fans. This four-colour, highly graphic book will provide information on all things Tolkien; books, calendars, toys and movie memorabilia. Both the novice and die-hard collector will find this guide helpful and like the new film trilogy from Peter Jackson, make us believe again.

BOOKDEALING FOR PROFIT
[Paul Minet]
Bookdealing For Profit has not only been written for everyone who harbours the idea of becoming a bookdealer -- but for all those in the trade who wish to get to grips with technology and make a better living. Paul Minet, one of country's leading antiquarian booksellers, sets out the philosophy behind the business -- and looks into the future. The traditional secondhand and antiquarian book trade is undergoing rapid change. The effect of the Internet has been, and is, enormous but, in many ways, it is already ahead of the new book trade in its use. It is having a major effect on how the trade buys and sells books. So where is the Internet taking the trade? How can bookdealers and booksellers gain most from this new provision? In addition to the Internet, 'books-on-demand' technology offers dealers many new opportunities with which to diversify, even becoming a publisher. Frequently asked questions are addressed: whether nowadays to work full-time or part-time? whether to trade from a shop or from home? why trade in specialist subjects anyway? The book also covers new techniques in valuing stock, why traditional abbreviations in descriptions should disappear; even the future for the new book is debated. Bookdealing for Profit is essential reading. Every bookdealer should take time to read the advice and observations.

CLEANING, REPAIRING & CARING FOR BOOKS, 4TH EDITION
[Robert L Shep]
This is a practical manual that describes in simple, straightforward language how to clean dull, shabby books, remove spots and marks, carry out minor repairs, and maintain in good condition a book collection or small library. It is not a treatise on binding and repairing valuable old volumes, nor on the conservation of precious books and manuscripts: those are jobs for highly qualified craftsmen. Most books, however, (and perhaps especially those acquired second-hand) need the sort of attention and care that a skilful amateur can give. This book, which presumes no previous knowledge of the essential techniques, is an invaluable guide to what should be done and how to do it.

IRWIN TOYS
: The Canadian STAR WARS Connection
[James McCallum]
All toys are not created equal. The ever popular Star Wars toys have been sold all over the world, and although the majority of the toys offered have been the same everywhere, there have been unique items in each country. Sometimes it's the toy itself that's different or unique; sometimes it's the combination of toys -- like an action figure included with a playset; and always there are differences in the packaging, if only to reflect the local language. This book details uniquely Canadian Star Wars toys. With more than a decade of expertise in dealing with Canadian Star Wars toys, veteran collector Jim McCallum shares with us his extensive knowledge. And not just the details of the toys themselves, but also how and why they came to be; their availability in the collecting world; and, of course, their current market values; and all done with full colour pictures. Also included are relevant historical statements from Mr Mac Irwin, the main in charge of Kenner Canada -- the place where these uniquely Canadian Star Wars toys were produced. Canadian Star Wars toys have become a hot item for collectors in the US as well as in Canada, and now you can find out exactly why. This book is both a marvellous introduction for new collectors and an essential resource for Star Wars completists.

MAGIC OF MERRYTHOUGHT
: A Collector's Encyclopedia, Second Edition
[John Axe]
'The Magic of Merrythought', the book I researched, photographed and wrote in 1984, and which was published in 1986, has enriched my life immeasurably. This book introduced me to Shropshire, which I consider the most wonderful part of England, and specifically to the Merrythought Company, which will always be the most magical place in the world for me... Merrythought Limited is my best serendipity in over 25 years of researching collectable dolls, teddy bears and other toys. I am proud that my book has played some part in the increased interest that has developed in Merrythought's past among collectors. Merrythought's continued innovation in the production of toys and collectibles that appeal to people more now that ever in its long history has caused an unprecedented event in publishing. Public demand from all over the world, particularly from members of the Merrythought International Collectors Club, has resulted in 'The Magic of Merrythought', which has not been available for years, being reprinted after all this time. -- from the author

EMBROIDERIES & SAMPLERS ISLAMIC EGYPT
[Marianne Ellis]
One of the world's most important collections of medieval Islamic embroideries is to be found in the Department of Eastern Art in Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum. The textiles were collected by the Egyptologist Percy Newberry between 1900 and 1930, while he was living in Cairo. Most of the embroideries were made in Egypt or Syria, they were mainly used as dress items and domestic furnishings, but the collection also has a number of samplers. Much of the material is now fragmentary, but the embroidered designs are still clearly visible. The richness of patterns and the technical brilliance of the majority of pieces make the collection a treasure trove for textile scholars and embroidery enthusiasts alike. The 66 examples of embroideries illustrated are from the Tulunid period (AD868-905), the Fatamid period (AD969-1171), the Ayyubid period (AD1171-1249), and the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria, ending with the Ottoman Conquest in 1517 and demonstrate the wide variety of embroidery stitches and techniques already in use at that time. A large proportion are worked in geometric design but there are also examples of scrolling and Arabesque design, figurative motifs such as birds, animals and fish, and calligraphy. It is possible that some of the comparatively simple open-work techniques were imported to Italy via trade and became the basis for the development of needlelace in Europe.

ENGLISH EMBROIDERIES
[Mary M Brooks]
This handbook explores the Ashmolean Museum's collection of English seventeenth-century embroideries. These intriguing pieces, often made by affluent school girls, include pictorial panels and an elaborate box showing bible stories as well as costume accessories and fanciful items such as a frog-shaped purse. The introductory essay explores how the miniature world of kings and queens, biblical and classical heroes, courtiers and shepherdesses, set in landscapes with lovingly depicted animals and flowers, connects with the turbulent events of the seventeenth century. Detailed photographs reveal the fine stitches and imaginative raised work embroidery techniques we well as the lavish use of metal threads and semi-precious stones. The book will appeal to all those interested in the life of seventeenth-century women as well as to textiles and embroidery specialists.

SYLLOGE OF ISLAMIC COINS IN THE ASHMOLEAN, VOLUME 9
: Iran After the Mongol Invasion
[Stephen Album]
This volume (the second to be published in the series) contains nearly 1800 coins of the 13th-19th centuries from Iran, Afghanistan and neighbouring lands. It covers the following dynasties: Ilkhanid, Timürid, Qara Quyunlu, Aq Quyunlu, Safavid, Qaja, Durrãni and Barakzäy. They are arranged by mint, and chronologically with mints, six maps and index of names and titles. The introduction offers not only a guide to the use of the catalogue, but also sets out an agenda for the study of the monetary history of the period. Late medieval Iranian coinage offers the historian the earliest opportunity to examine the relationship between coinage issue in the Islamic world and the monetary policies which underlie them. The collections which contribute to this volume are all housed in the Heberden Coin Room, Ashmolean Museum. The most important of these is undoubtedly that part of the Thorburn collection which was acquired by the Coin Room in 1966. The Ashmolean collection began in the late 17th century but included few Islamic coins until the acquisition of the J.B. Elliott collection in 1859. Since then the collection of Islamic coins has grown to more than 9000 pieces, not including the Ottoman Empire, the Muslim states of India or modern machine-struck coinage. This catalogue is the second in a projected series of ten volumes, covering the Ashmolean's permanent collection of Islamic coins and that of Samir Shamma, one of the finest private collections of Islamic coins ever formed in the Middle East.
