DOORWAY TO FOREVER : September 2nd, 1666, the First Day of Forever [Stanley M Goldman] Ages 12 Years & Over. Could a modern woman be the reincarnation of a bride who perished in the Great Fire of London? Astrophysicist Professor Manheimer is intrigued by the striking parallels between the sister of his client Ted Forsythe and a bride who perished with her new husband in the Great Fire of London on September 2, 1666. As he investigates the possibility that Pamela Forsythe may be the modern incarnation of the doomed bride Emily Anne, he discovers disturbing coincidences, such as similarities between an antique stone mirror in a Manhattan boutique and the couple's ancient tombstone, the frequent unexplained appearances of a man in strange garb, and Pamela's uncanny recurring dreams. The professor confides to Ted that the DNA evidence points to Pamela as the re-embodiment of Emily Anne, and that she may be predestined to join her beloved Jeremiah in death. On the anniversary of the tragic fire, Pamela dons an antique wedding gown, enters the fitting room, and vanishes. Ancient superstition and modern science clash in this chilling tale of doomed romance, reincarnation, and 21st-century technology. { 186pp, 125x210mm, September 2008; PB, £6.99, 1933255463:9781933255460 , IPG (DNA Press) }

As black code continues to eat away at Natch's sanity, he faces a mutiny from his own apprentices, a legal onslaught from the government, and the return of enemies old and new. In desperation, the entrepreneur turns to some unlikely allies: a radical politician with an agenda of his own, and a childhood enemy to whom he has done a terrible wrong. Natch's struggle will take him from the halls of power in Melbourne to the ruined cities of the diss. NANO COMES TO CLIFFORD FALLS : And Other Stories [Nancy Kress] Blending a focus on cutting-edge technology with deep emotional impacts, this enticing collection draws its stories from various Year's Best and Reader's Choice lists. The pathos of the human condition is explored in such stories as "My Mother, Dancing," in which seedlings are planted and those responsible must decide if they will play God with them, or let natural selection progress; or in "Nano Comes to Clifford Falls," where nanotechnology brings every wish to everyone -- yet dire problems still ensue. The narratives reveal many forms of artificial intelligence including a persecuted slave in "Computer Virus," a controlling force of the universe in "Mirror Image," or even one that's entirely indifferent to humans in "Saviour". From the centre of the galaxy to the swamps of Earth, all 13 inventive tales offer a trademark mix of hard science fiction interacting with flawed humanity. REVIEW: "Another of the author's substantial and provocative examinations of near-future biotechnology. . . . Kress is certainly the most probing writer of the past decade on this theme." -- Locus magazine" { 340pp, 125x210mm, September 2008; HB, £16.99, 1930846509:9781930846500 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
STALKING THE UNICORN : A Fable of Tonight [Mike Resnick] It's 8:35 pm on New Year's Eve, and Private Detective John Justin Mallory is hiding out in his Manhattan office to avoid his landlord's persistent inquiries about the unpaid rent. As he cheerlessly reflects on the passing of a lousy year, which saw his business partner run off with his wife, he assumes the bourbon is responsible for the appearance of a belligerent elf. This elf informs him that he needs the detective's help in searching for a unicorn that was stolen from his charge. When Mallory realises the little green fellow is not going to disappear with the passing of his inebriation, he listens to the elf's impassioned plea that the stolen magical beast must be returned to his care by daylight or his little green life will be forfeited by the elves' guild. Join detective Mallory on a New Year's night of wild adventure in a fantasy Manhattan of leprechauns, gnomes, and harpies as he matches wits with the all-powerful demon The Grundy in a race to find the missing unicorn before time runs out! REVIEW: "...good fun...What's interesting about this book, besides the lighthearted tone and wry humor, is how it overcomes my usual reservations about fantasy by blatantly flying in the face of everything that normally makes me want to roll my eyes...A big plus of the book is the very likable Mallory...a fun story when all is said and done, and I give credit to the author for making a palatable fantasy novel that even this hard-case fantasy reader could enjoy." -- SF Signal, August 12, 2008. "With a witty perspective on many aspects of city life, anyone who enjoys fantasy adventures in a more or less familiar urban setting will laugh their way through this wild entertainment." -- Gumshoe, August 2008 { 310pp, 155x230mm, August 2008; PB, £9.99, 1591026482:9781591026488 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
STALKING THE VAMPIRE : A Fable of Tonight [Mike Resnick] It's Halloween, and John Justin Mallory's partner, Winnifred Carruthers, has been so busy preparing for the biggest holiday of the year (in this Manhattan, anyway) that she seems short of energy and pale. Mallory is worried that she's been working too hard. Then he notices the two puncture marks on her neck... On this night when ghosts and goblins are out celebrating, detective Mallory must stalk the vampire who has threatened his partner and killed her nephew. With the aid of Felina, the cat-girl, Mallory and Carruthers investigate clubs and lairs that only seem to exist on this one night of the year. His hunt takes him to Creepy Conrad's Cut-Rate All-Night Mortuary, where he questions the living and the dead; to the Annual Zombies' Ball, to learn more about the undead; to the Hills of Home Cemetery, where the vampire sleeps by day; and to Battery Park, where all of Manhattan's bats come to feed and sleep. Along the way he meets a few old friends and enemies, and a host of strange new inhabitants of this otherworldly Manhattan. Locked in an intriguing battle of wits with the millennia-old vampire, Mallory has until dawn if he is to save his trusted partner. REVIEW: "Mallory remains a great character, the classic world-weary knight in trenchcoat armor, with a strong supporting cast...It's clear Resnick is having fun with the characters, setting, and mystery itself. Readers who enjoy a lighthearted caper through familiar-but-not territory will find this a pleasant read. Recommended." -- Gumshoe, August 2008 { 288pp, 155x230mm, August 2008; PB, £16.99, 1591026490:9781591026495 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
STEAMPUNK [Ann VanderMeer & Jeff VanderMeer (eds)] Replete with whimsical mechanical wonders and charmingly anachronistic settings, this pioneering anthology gathers a brilliant blend of fantastical stories. Steampunk originates in the romantic elegance of the Victorian era and blends in modern scientific advances -- synthesising imaginative technologies such as steam-driven robots, analogue supercomputers, and ultramodern dirigibles. The elegant allure of this popular new genre is represented in this rich collection by distinctively talented authors, including Neal Stephenson, Michael Chabon, James Blaylock, Michael Moorcock, and Joe R. Lansdale. REVIEW: "Jeff VanderMeer is one of the most remarkable practitioners of the literary fantastic in America today." -- Locus magazine" { 400pp, 125x230mm, September 2008; PB, £9.99, 1892391759:9781892391759 , IPG (Tachyon Publications) }
WORD OF GOD : Or, Holy Writ Rewritten [Thomas M Disch] Revealing the intimate details of his sudden elevation to Godhood, this shockingly mischievous satire follows one of America's most intellectually-radical science fiction authors as he takes on the most coveted and misunderstood position in the universe. Wearying of the world's religious schisms, doctrinal heresies, and manifold sins, Thomas M Disch has taken it upon himself to embrace divine authority, unless his outlandish enemies emerging from the depths of a dissatisfying hell manage to prevent him. Revealing the hidden conspiracies that link the author with Philip K. Dick, Mel Gibson, Santa, L. Ron Hubbard, and eternity itself, this darkly comedic polemic holds nothing sacred and is as controversial as it is incontrovertible. REVIEW: "One of the most remarkably talented writers around." -- Washington Post Book World" { 240pp, 125x210mm, August 2008; PB, £9.99, 1892391775:9781892391773 , IPG (Tachyon Publications) }
WRECK OF THE GODSPEED : And Other Stories [James Patrick Kelly] Providing new insights into the human psyche, this remarkable collection gathers 13 cutting-edge tales of science fiction that reveal both the dark and light side of progress. In the Nebula award-winner, "Burn," an idyllic planet wrestles with ecological responsibility and terrorism, while the problems and temptations of a happy virtual reality are examined in "The Dark Side of Town." Colourful pilgrims travel to new worlds until their ship's artificial intelligence begins to act strangely in the namesake, "The Wreck of the Godspeed," and the extent that future television programs will go to get ratings is explored in "The Leila Torn Show," Combining hard technology with complex, character-based dilemmas, each inventive narrative shares the message that science is not a panacea and often leads to personal decisions that are neither clear nor easy. { 350pp, 125x210mm, August 2008; HB, £16.99, 1930846517:9781930846517 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }

BLACK POCKETS : and Other Dark Thoughts [George Zebrowski] This collection of 19 horror stories, culled from the career of a writer best known for his literary science fiction, explores horror as a product of the human mind by allowing personal, political, and metaphysical obsessions to unleash terrors that beset these characters and by refusing to rely on genre-typical terrors such as serial killers and ancient curses. The original novella 'Black Pockets' depicts a hate so all-consuming that a man makes a bargain to carry out the revenge plot of a dying enemy in order to gain the power to pursue his own victims. In unusual zombie tale, 'I Walked with Fidel', Fidel Castro's ideals are slowly betrayed by both Cold War superpowers. And a Kafka-like uneasiness pervades 'A Piano Full of Dead Spiders', in which a composer's music actually is the result of spiders walking on piano strings. Posing as philosophical puzzles, the stories gain emotional power from an attention to character development and the insightful investigation of both private and collective nightmares. { 275pp, 145x215mm, May 2006; HB, £16.99, 1930846401:9781930846401 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
BLOOD DEBT ((Books of the Cataclysm Series: 2)) [Sean Williams] In a remote city on the edge of two worlds, where blood has power and water is more precious than freedom, three far-flung friends unite on a quest to save their families. Sal Hrvati's estranged father has brought more into the world than the woman he loved. Instead of saving her from the Void Beneath, he has summoned an unknown creature -- a creature with a mission of its own and a past that stretches back to the beginning of the world. The quest to find both of them entangles Sal and his companions in a hunt for magical treasure on the floor of the Divide, a mighty crack in the earth inhabited by creatures that are not remotely human. Desert landscapes and dirigibles feature in a fast-paced fantasy that combines romance, adventure, and humour with an original take on magic. The Books of the Cataclysm take inspiration from many arcane and mythological sources. In positing that this world is just one of many "realms", three of which are inhabited by humans during various stages of their lives, it begins in the present world but soon propels the reader to a landscape that is simultaneously familiar and fantastic. { 463pp, 155x230mm, November 2008; PB, £9.99, 1591026946:9781591026945 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

BRIGHT OF THE SKY : Book One of the Entire & the Rose [Kay Kenyon] Kay Kenyon, noted for her science fiction world-building, has in this new series created her most vivid and compelling society, the Universe Entire. In a land-locked galaxy that tunnels through our own, the Entire is a bizarre and seductive mix of long-lived quasi-human and alien beings gathered under a sky of fire, called the bright. A land of wonders, the Entire is sustained by monumental storm walls and an exotic, never-ending river. Over all, the elegant and cruel Tarig rule supreme. Into this rich milieu is thrust Titus Quinn, former star pilot, bereft of his beloved wife and daughter who are assumed dead by everyone on earth except Quinn. Believing them trapped in a parallel universe -- one where he himself may have been imprisoned -- he returns to the Entire without resources, language, or his memories of that former life. He is assisted by Anzi, a woman of the Chalin people, a Chinese culture copied from our own universe and transformed by the kingdom of the bright. Learning of his daughter's dreadful slavery, Quinn swears to free her. To do so, he must cross the unimaginable distances of the Entire in disguise, for the Tarig are lying in wait for him. As Quinn's memories return, he discovers why. Quinn's goal is to penetrate the exotic culture of the Entire -- to the heart of Tarig power, the fabulous city of the Ascendancy, to steal the key to his family's redemption. But will his daughter and wife welcome rescue? Ten years of brutality have forced compromises on everyone. What Quinn will learn to his dismay is what his own choices were, long ago, in the Universe Entire. He will also discover why a fearful multiverse destiny is converging on him and what he must sacrifice to oppose the coming storm. CAN'T CATCH ME : And Other Twice-Told Tales [Michael Cadnum] Rekindling the excitement of adored childhood stories, this award-winning author uses unexpected points of view to deftly twist the themes of classic folktales. CROSSOVER : A Cassandra Kresnov Novel [Joel Shepherd] This is the first novel in a series which follows the adventures of Cassandra Kresnov, an artificial person, or android, created by the League, one side of an interstellar war against the more powerful, conservative Federation. Cassandra is an experimental design -- more intelligent, more creative, and far more dangerous than any that have preceded her. But with her intellect come questions, and a moral awakening. She deserts the League and heads incognito into the space of her former enemy, the Federation, in search of a new life. Her chosen world is Callay, and its enormous, decadent capital metropolis of Tanusha, where the concerns of the war are literally and figuratively so many light years away. But the war between the League and the Federation was ideological as much as political, with much of that ideological dispute regarding the very existence of artificial sentience and the rules that govern its creation. Cassandra discovers that even in Tanusha, the powerful entities of this bloody conflict have wound their tentacles. Many in the League and the Federation have cause to want her dead, and Cassandra's history, inevitably, catches up with her. Cassandra finds herself at the mercy of a society whose values preclude her own right even to exist. But her presence in Tanusha reveals other fault lines, and when Federal agents attempt to assassinate the Callayan president, she finds herself thrust into the service of her former enemies, using her lethal skills to attempt to protect her former enemies from forces beyond their ability to control. As she struggles for her place and survival in a new world, Cassandra must forge new friendships with old enemies, while attempting to confront the most disturbing and deadly realities of her own existence. { 457pp, 155x230mm, August 2006; PB, £9.99, 1591024439:9781591024439 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

FAST FORWARD 1 : Future Fiction from the Cutting Edge [Lou Anders (ed)] Science Fiction is the genre that looks at the implications of technology on society, which in this age of exponential technological growth makes it the most relevant branch of literature going. This is only the start, and the close of the 21st century will look absolutely nothing like its inception. It has been said that science fiction is an ongoing dialogue about the future, and the front line of that dialogue is the short story. The field has a long history of producing famous anthologies to showcase its distinguished short fiction, but it has been several years since there has been a prestigious all-original science fiction anthology series. 'Fast Forward' is offered in the tradition of Damon Knight’s prestigious and influential anthology series, Orbit, and Frederik Pohl’s landmark Star SF. 'Fast Forward' marks the start of a new hard science fiction anthology series, dedicated to presenting the vanguard of the genre and charting the undiscovered country that is the future. REVIEW: "The solid, straightforward storytelling of the 19 stories and two poems that Anders (Futureshocks) gathers for this first in a projected series of all-original SF anthologies speculates on people's efforts to "make sense of a changing world." The contributors don't necessarily assume that humans will find it easy or even possible to cope with all the changes around and within them-but they'll try, which is just part of SF's continuing dialogue about the future. The collection's strongest pieces include Robert Charles Wilson's character study of an almost-artist in search of a muse ("YFL-500"), Mary A. Turzillo's dissection of love ("Pride"), Paul Di Filippo's witty extrapolation of electronic consumerism and democracy gone berserk ("Wikiworld") and Ken MacLeod's understated, moving report on the Second Coming ("Jesus Christ, Reanimator"). All the selections in this outstanding volume prompt thoughtful speculation about what kind of tomorrow we're heading toward and what we'll do when we get there." -- Publishers Weekly, January 1, 2007. { 410pp, 155x230mm, February 2007; HB, £9.99, 1591024862:9781591024866 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
FATE OF MICE [Susan Palwick] The fantastic and magical realities humans create and their often terrifying consequences are examined in this unflinching collection of work from a noted science fiction writer. A determined mother attempts to break the fairy tale spell that confines her daughters, a female wolf learns that loving a man can be quite dangerous, and a manipulative politician harvests zombies in these stories that are beautiful and brutal, but maintain a modicum of hope for the future. { 218pp, 140x215mm, February 2007; PB, £9.99, 1892391422:9781892391421 , IPG (Tachyon Publications) }
FEELING VERY STRANGE : The Slipstream Anthology [James Patrick Kelly & John Kessel (eds)] Intending to establish a canon for the controversial slipstream science-fiction subgenre, the editors of this anthology have brought together a group of convention-defying tales set in vivid and disorienting dreamscapes that offer no distinction between reality and hallucination. A cross between the literary surrealism of Franz Kafka and escapist-popular-fiction, this ambitious new species -- sometimes also called interstitial fiction -- is exemplified here in stories by Carol Emshwiller, Karen Joy Fowler, Jonathan Lethem, and George Saunders. { 288pp, 140x215mm, June 2006; PB, £9.99, 189239135X:9781892391353 , IPG (Tachyon Publications) }

GAMBIT'S END [Chad Corrie; Illustrated by Ed Waysek III] In the spirit of Eragon, Lord of The Rings, Dragonlance and Sword of Shanara, 'Gambit's End' is the final book in 'The Divine Gambit Trilogy'. A fantasy/action-adventure following up the two well-received previous volumes of the series (Seer's Quest and Path of Power), 'Gambit's End' is a powerful and perfect end to this three part story. Though written for a slightly older market, it can still be enjoyed by tweens to teens and adults of all ages. In 'Gambit's End', The Divine Gambit Trilogy draws to a close when the mercenaries who have been drawn together since Seer's Quest, face off with The Master one last time. Unable to stop him from claiming his goal of Godhood, those that survive discover the full scope of his plans and ultimately see just how large this gambit really is. With this greater revelation the three surviving mercenaries go on a desperate journey to try and find a way to stop The Master from not only claiming Tralodroen as his own but all the power of the Tralodroen Pantheon as well. They are not alone in this as the gods have taken action, and sides, adding more complexity and uncertainly to the outcome. Between the various divine factions and alliances, surviving members of a mercenary band desperate to find the key to a weapon they hope to use against The Master, and two cosmic forces who are playing everyone as pawns in their own game, the gambit comes to an end that many had not been expecting. { 492pp, 140x215mm, June 2007; PB, £10.99, 0977604357:9780977604357 , AtlasBooks (Aspirations Media Inc) }
GENETOPIA [Keith Brooke] Genetopia is the story of Flint, a young man in search of his possibly-abducted sister in a far future where nano- and bio-technology have influenced and accelerated the evolution of humans and their strangely altered surroundings. In this world, illness is always to be feared as symptoms can be a part of the transformation process: re-engineering active genes; mutating germ cells; migrating traits from species to species through plague and fever. This is a world where organic AIs grow in the jungle, either worshiped or feared, where trees sing to each other and new houses are grown to order. To find his sister, Flint must travel through communities and wildlands no normal person would brave. Flint's story is the story of the last true humans, and of the struggles between those who want to defend their heritage and those who choose to embrace the new. Genetopia will appeal to the core science-fiction market, but also to those interested in environmental, political, biological, and anthropological issues. { 305pp, 152x228mm, February 2006; HB, £16.99, 1591023335:9781591023333 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
GIRL WHO LOVED ANIMALS : & Other Stories [Bruce McAllister] From his first professional story written when he was 16, "The Faces Outside," to his most critically acclaimed work, the novelette Dream Baby -- a finalist for both the Hugo and Nebula awards -- these 17 stories showcase the author's five decades of science fiction writing. Whether it be an elderly woman who uses her vast wealth to create a genetically perfect son ("Angels") or a young boy who learns the rituals of an alien culture in order to obtain an assassin's help for his unborn sister ("Kin"), the stories resonate with a child's sense of wonder coming face-to-face with the realities of the human condition in a science-fictional world. The book also features story notes that reveal each story's origin as well as the influences -- both literary and human -- on the author's life and writing career. An introduction by science fiction great Harry Harrison, an afterword by the John W. Campbell Memorial Award-winner Barry N. Malzberg, and cover art by 2005 Chesley Award-winner John Picacio, make this a keepsake collection. REVIEW: "Among top short story talents in the field, McAllister is a leader. Polished, moving, thought-provoking -- this collection is without parallel." -- Harry Harrison, author, The Stainless Steel Rat" { 306pp, 125x210mm, October 2007; HB, £16.99, 1930846495:9781930846494 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
GOLDEN [Lucius Shepard] Deviating from traditional tales that feature lonely vampires who prowl through human society in search of victims or solace, this account of vampires flourishing in their own 'inhuman society' takes place in the year 1860, when their centuries-long breeding experiments have finally produced 'The Golden', a mortal whose blood is perfect and powerful. Mobilised by the news of this discovery, aristocratic vampire clans arrive at the looming Castle Banat, where they plan to partake of the sublime blood. To their shock, the guests find that The Golden, a young girl, has been brutally murdered and her blood already drained. The story also follows the Inspector Michael Beheim -- a recent vampire -- assigned to track down the killer. Recounted in full 19th-century literary style with gothic elements and foreshadowing, the inspector navigates his way through the vampire world and the crime therein. { 203pp, 140x215mm, April 2006; PB, £9.99, 193084638X:9781930846388 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
GUILD OF XENOLINGUISTS [Sheila Finch] The galaxy-wide Guild of Xenolinguists handles all cross-cultural communications by sending agents abroad to learn new languages and program translation computers. The travails of novice linguists animate these 11 stories as they face much more than simple translation work, taking on alien parasites and viruses, a mysterious and violent star-faring race, dolphin instructors, and large tyrant ants. As cultures and languages collide, first contact quickly becomes a matter of morality, galactic politics, death, and war. { 281pp, 145x215mm, September 2007; HB, £16.99, 1930846487:9781930846487 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }

Sal and his companions seek the source of the flood in the legendary Hanging Mountains, hoping to head off a crisis that was put in motion a thousand years ago. As conflict erupts between two long-forgotten civilisations, the outsiders find that allies are hard to come by. Taken captive and separated, they uncover uncomfortable truths about the world and how it relates to the one that came before -- our world. Something dark and deadly is stirring in the heart of the mountains. And the closer it comes to waking, the more certain it seems the Homunculus may not have been the enemy at all. { 477pp, 155x230mm, June 2007; HB, £16.99, 1591025443:9781591025443 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
HARVEST OF CHANGELINGS [Warren Rochelle] Although the familiar themes of fantasy are present in this novel, the characters are not princes or sorcerers but ordinary people with seemingly ordinary lives. Ben Tyson, a librarian, met and loved Valeria, a fairy woman; but her death left Ben to raise their child, Malachi, alone. The two of them lived a fairly ordinary life until Malachi turned 10 and began to manifest previously unknown powers. Now the lords of Fairy have called home the changelings they left in the universe generations ago, waking up long-dormant DNA and changeling blood. More than a straightforward fantasy novel, this tale's underlining current deals with people that are different -- physically, mentally, and in their choice of lifestyle. The fairy children are seen as outsiders to mainstream culture, and as they become aware of each other they must unite to overcome the apathy and prejudice of humans, as well as the evil Fomorii, before it is too late. { 313pp, 155x230mm, May 2007; HB, £16.99, 1930846460:9781930846463 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
HAUNTING OF BARNEY THOMSON [Douglas Lindsay] The king of barbershop death junkies is back, in another novel of blood, murder, ghosts, terror and downright stupidity. As Barney Thomson is closing up the barbershop for the night, an old man enters looking for a Cary Grant cut and a bit of a chat. The following day, Barney discovers that his late night customer was the captain of a fishing trawler which had been found mysteriously abandoned on the Clyde over one hun-dred years previously. In a sinister echo of that old legend, that morning a trawler is found drifting in a flat calm just off the island. Of the three trawlermen known to have been on board the Bitter Wind, one is found dead on the vessel, two are missing. The police arrive, led by DCI Frankenstein and an officer from Barney’s past, Detective Sergeant Proudfoot. As the ghosts mount up for Barney Thomson, could it just be that he is in an episode of Scooby Doo, featuring a lot of vil-lains in masks? Or is it a real, dark and menacing evil which haunts the small seaside town, and haunts what could be the final days of Barney Thomson? { 260pp, 130x195mm, August 2007; PB, £7.99, 0954138767:9780954138769 , Long Midnight Publishing }

HORSE IN THE ATTIC [Barbara Frackowiak] For ages 12+. Poetic language and a theme of female strength underlie this fantasy novel about a 12-year-old girl who believes her life is falling apart when her parents decide to separate. She has to move from the house where she has always lived -- until, that is, she discovers a whole new world with larger-than-life heroes, magical friends, and frightening events over which she achieves control. HURRICANE MOON [Alexis Glynn Latner] In the late twenty-first century, earth is wracked by political and ecological crises, and the Aeon Foundation launches a starship to find a new world and found a new civilisation, with all the advances of science and without the mistakes made on earth. Catharin Gault is the idealistic astronaut-physician in Aeon's primary crew. Along with the rest of the crew and passenger-colonists, she goes into stasis -- cold suspended animation -- for the long journey across the stars, their collective fate surrendered to the ship's artificial intelligence. Things go amiss even before the new world's beginning. Programmed to search for a planet with a large moon (the only way to guarantee stable seasons, tides, and an earth-like ecosystem after terraforming), the ship takes far too long, then finds a destination better than Catharin ever dared hope for: two earth-sized planets locked in orbit around each other. The one dubbed 'Planet Green' has abundant plant life and a paucity of large animals. 'Planet Blue' is an oceanic world covered with hurricanes. Several things about Blue baffle Aeon's planetary scientists. To everyone else, it's simply a big, blue moon. Revived from stasis more than a thousand years after the starship left earth, Catharin makes a horrible discovery. The long stasis damaged the complex organic molecules in human bodies. Unless the human genome can be repaired, there will be no future on idyllic Planet Green. Aeon has tremendous biomedical resources, but Catharin needs more. She needs a genetic miracle-worker -- and she has one. She revives Joseph Devreze: a uniquely talented molecular biologist and maddeningly irresponsible genius. A crown prince of the science of his century, Devreze made a terrible mistake, followed a seductive line of research too far, and made one powerful enemy too many. In a trap of his own unwitting making, he saw only one way out: escape to the other side of the stars. Now, Catharin must rely on this untrustworthy maverick to help her save humanity on Green. Their mutual attraction ratchets up as their conflict with each other escalates. Together Catharin and Joe must decide how they can face, and embrace, a future utterly at odds with the Foundation's plans and their own expectations. And all the while the mystery of the Hurricane Moon looms over them. REVIEW: "I think I shall keep watching Latner grow as a writer in order to see how she models our culture and our past. This is what good writing can do." -- The New York Review of Science Fiction, February 2008 { 397pp, 155x230mm, July 2007; PB, £9.99, 1591025451:9781591025450 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

INFOQUAKE [David Louis Edelman] How far should you go to make a profit? 'Infoquake', the debut novel by David Louis Edelman, takes speculative fiction into alien territory: the corporate boardroom of the far future. It's a stunning trip through the trenches of a technological war fought with product demos, press releases, and sales pitches. Natch is a master of bio/logics, the programming of the human body. He's clawed and scraped his way to the top of the bio/logics market using little more than his wits. Now his sudden notoriety has brought him to the attention of Margaret Surina, the owner of a mysterious new technology called MultiReal. Only by enlisting Natch's devious mind can Margaret keep MultiReal out of the hands of High Executive Len Borda and his ruthless armies. To fend off the intricate net of enemies closing in around him, Natch and his apprentices must accomplish the impossible. They must understand this strange new technology, run through the product development cycle, and prepare MultiReal for release to the public -- all in three days. Meanwhile, hanging over everything is the spectre of the infoquake, a lethal burst of energy that's disrupting the bio/logic networks and threatening to send the world crashing back into the Dark Ages. With "Infoquake", David Louis Edelman has created a fully detailed world that's both as imaginative as Dune and as real as today's Wall Street Journal. REVIEW: "It is a brisk, well-told science fiction adventure set in the normally unadventurous world of business...a simple old-fashioned story, where incident crowds onto incident, where jeopardy makes us hold our breath and rabbits are pulled from the hat only at the very last moment. So in the end the melodrama keeps us reading and awaiting with some interest the next volume in the trilogy." -- New York Review of Science Fiction, Vol. 19, No. 5, # 221, January 2007. "Right off the bat, let me just say that David Louis Edelman's Infoquake just might be one of the very best science fiction debuts I have ever read. The book deserves all the praise it has garnered, and then some! Only rarely will a debut author produce the sort of work which habitually comes from celebrated veterans...Edelman brings a fresh vision to "old" ideas and clichés, which makes Infoquake something special...The worldbuilding is another enthralling facet of this novel...The author has created a richly detailed universe...Ambitious, vast in scope, with a deftly executed plot and impeccable prose from start to finish, David Louis Edelman's Infoquake is a fascinating read. 2006 was one of the best years in memory in terms of impressive speculative fiction debuts. Had I read it when it was originally released, Infoquake would have trumped Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora, Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon, Brian Ruckley's Winterbirth, and Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself." -- Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist, May 7, 2008. "...a well-wrought, propulsive, and consistently readable book...a well-told, entertaining, and thought-provoking first novel. A solid start. Edelman's just might be a name to watch." -- Andromeda Spaceways, August 12, 2008. { 421pp, 155x230mm, July 2006; PB, £9.99, 1591024420:9781591024422 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

KILLSWITCH : A Cassandra Kresnov Novel [Joel Shepherd] Two years after the unhatching of Callayan President Neiland’s plot to make the capital city of Tanusha the center of the Federation, Callay is under siege. So begins the third instalment of this gripping trilogy from an exciting new sci-fi author. A powerful faction of conservative Fleet captains has surrounded Callay, at Earth’s behest, and is threatening a blockade -- or worse. A fearful Earth does not wish to lose direct control of its precious war machine, and there are fears of civil war. All that Callay has to oppose the warships of the Fleet is the Callayan Defence Force (CDF) -- a newly formed group of raw recruits led by a politically hamstrung general. However, the CDF is largely trained and organised by Major Vanessa Rice and her best friend, Callay’s combat-android, Commander Cassandra Kresnov. But when Cassandra’s lover, Special Agent Ari Ruben, discovers a plot to kill her using a killswitch, which her old masters in the League built into her brainstem, Sandy is forced to go underground to stay alive. REVIEW: "...yet another intelligent, action-packed and kick-ass scifi thriller! ...Killswitch unfolds on the world of Callay, in the sprawling futuristic and exotic capital of Tanusha. Once again, the multiethnic cast of characters is a welcome change from the habitual scifi trope. The characterization is probably my favorite aspect of this trilogy. Cassandra's moral awakening has been a fascinating facet to follow thus far, and I like how the author raises a number of philosophical issues through her character. Those moments are interwoven almost seamlessly into the plotlines, which is no small feat...we have yet another intricate and well-crafted plot. Fast-paced, this one reads like a good thriller... Shepherd imbues the darker moments of this book with an appropriate amount of humor, thus creating a nice balance... A remarkable blend of political thriller and thrilling science fiction adventure, Killswitch is an exciting closing chapter to a terrific series. Shepherd brings the story to a satisfying ending, though the door is left open for possible sequels. Readers who relish strong female characters, complex storylines, and incredible action and battle scenes should give this trilogy a shot. Chances are they won't be disappointed! Highly recommended. Killswitch is another great read bearing the Pyr logo. The final verdict: 7.75/10." -- Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist, October 22, 2007. { 450pp, 155x230mm, November 2007; PB, £9.99, 1591025982:9781591025986 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

LINE BETWEEN [Peter S Beagle] The long-awaited sequel to the popular classic The Last Unicorn is the centrepiece of this powerful collection of new tales from a fantasy master. As long time fans have come to expect, the stories are written with a grace and style similar to fantasy's most original voices, such as J R R Tolkien, Fritz Leiber, and Kurt Vonnegut. Traditional themes are typically infused with modern sensibilities -- reincarnated lovers and waning kings rub shoulders with heroic waifs; Schmendrick the Magician returns to adventure, as does the ghost of an off-Broadway actor and a dream-stealing shape shifter; and Gordon, the delightfully charming 'self-made cat', appears for the first time in print, taking his place alongside Stuart Little as a new favourite of the young at heart. This wide-ranging compilation contains sly humour and a resounding depth that will charm fans of literary fantasy. { 232pp, 140x215mm, July 2006; PB, £9.99, 1892391368:9781892391360 , IPG (Tachyon Publications) }
MACROLIFE : A Mobile Utopia [George Zebrowski] Subtitled A Mobile Utopia, this pioneering novel about the meaning of space habitats for human history, presents spacefaring as no work did in its time, and since. A utopian novel like no other, presenting a dynamic utopian civilisation that transcends the failures of our history. Epic in scope, Macrolife opens in the year 2021. The Bulero family owns one of Earth's richest corporations. As the Buleros gather for a reunion at the family mansion, an industrial accident plunges the corporation into a crisis, which eventually brings the world around them to the brink of disaster. Vilified, the Buleros flee to a space colony where young Richard Bulero gradually realises that the only hope for humanity lies in macrolife -- mobile, self-reproducing space habitats. A millennium later, these mobile communities have left our sunspace and multiplied. Conflicts with natural planets arise. John Bulero, a cloned descendant of the twenty-first century Bulero clan, falls in love with a woman from a natural world and experiences the harshness of her way of life. He rediscovers his roots when his mobile returns to the solar system, and a tense confrontation of three civilisations takes place. One hundred billion years later, macrolife, now as numerous as the stars, faces the impending death of nature. Regaining his individuality but falling away from a highly evolved macrolife, a strangely changed John Bulero struggles to see beyond a collapse of the universe into a giant black hole. Inspired by the possibilities of space settlements, projections of biology and cosmology, and basic human longings, Macrolife is a visionary speculation on the long-term future of human and natural history. Filled with haunting images and memorable characters, this is a vivid and brilliant work. { 384pp, 155x230mm, January 2006; PB, £9.99, 1591023416:9781591023418 / HB, £16.99, 1591023408:9781591023401 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
MAD DOG SUMMER : And Other Stories [Joe R Lansdale] Joe Lansdale returns with his characteristic dark take on the horrors that lurk beneath the surface of mundane life in this collection of short stories and novellas. Originally available only in limited-edition hardcover, these tales run the gamut from devilish fantasy to twisted courtroom drama to vampire-robot western. Each story has an introduction in which the author relates the background of and inspiration for the story, whether it was drawn from history, literature, or pure imagination. MAP OF DREAMS [M Rickert] Set in a reality where nightmares do not fade upon waking, this anthology skims along the surface of life and dips just beneath, revealing the hidden machinations that fuel dreams. These underlying myths and fantasies exist not as musty old stories but as ancient truths that have come to illuminate the modern human condition. The title story touches on themes of grief, redemption, and time travel; Cold Fire ventures into love and obsession; and Peace on Suburbia introduces readers to a Christmas with an entirely different kind of savior. These and 13 other tales are framed by four interludes -- Dreams, Nightmares, Waking, and Rising -- that guide readers through a world that is at once familiar and eerily off-kilter. { 310pp, 140x215mm, October 2006; HB, £16.99, 1930846444:9781930846449 , IPG (Golden Gryphon Press) }
MARTIAN GENERAL'S DAUGHTER [Theodore Judson] Welcome to the End of Empire. Set over two hundred years from now, in a world very much like Imperial Rome, this is the story of General Peter Black, the last decent man, as told through the eyes of his devoted (and illegitimate) daughter, Justa. Raised on battlefields, more comfortable in the company of hard men of war than with women or other children, Justa must keep the truth of her birth hidden. Her father regards her as an embarrassment, a reminder of his one and only indiscretion. Yet she is a remarkable woman-one whose keen mind wins her an education at the feet of Emperor Mathias the Glistening himself. All his life, General Black served the noble emperor, and, out of loyalty to the father, continues to serve his son after Mathias's death, even as the son's reign degenerates into an insane tyranny worthy of Nero or Caligula. As the rule of the empire passes from father to son with disastrous results, a strange metal plague begins slowly destroying the empire's technology, plunging the realm into chaos and the world into war. Amid the destruction and upheaval, General Black must decide whether to turn his back on the men and institutions who never loved him nearly as much as he did them, or whether to save his most trusted ally and adviser, his best friend and only real family. "The Martian General's Daughter" is a gripping tale of a world at war; of cunning strategies and vile politics; of bravery, foolishness, and excess. It is at once a stirring military adventure, a cautionary tale of repeating history, a cutting satire, and a heartbreaking examination of the joys and pain inherent in the love between a father and child. Judson's previous novel was selected in multiple best-of-the-year lists. With "The Martian General's Daughter", he offers another must-read epic destined to take its place in the canon of science fiction, and sure to appeal to readers of everything from Orson Scott Card to Walter M Miller, Jr. REVIEW: "Judson expertly weaves a story that is mimicry of the fall of the Roman Empire. What Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire takes volumes to describe, Judson compacts into 252 pages...I can now read the histories of Rome and other empires with a better understanding of what they are all about...While telling the story of the demise of an empire, Judson still manages to evoke feelings of hope and pride, integrate detail and spin a complex web of politics and intrigue...This novel is now proudly displayed on my shelf, and I plan to one day hand to my child and use it to teach them about how empires fall. This fictionalized account is able to succinctly encapsulate the events and feeling of that kind of time, and while it can never replace a learning of history, it is certainly a starting point for discussions on politics, religion, and culture. I am certain that The Martian General's Daughter is sure to become part of the canon of science fiction reading, if not a work read alongside George Orwell's 1984 or Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. This is a novel that should not be missed. I read it in its entirety in one sitting, as I just could not put it down." -- Grasping for the Wind, June 10, 2008 { 252pp, 155x230mm, April 2008; PB, £9.99, 1591026431:9781591026433 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
METATEMPORAL DETECTIVE [Michael Moorcock] Collected for the first time, eleven tales of Sir Seaton Begg vs Count Zodiac, including the never before seen 'The Flaneur of the Arcades d'Opera'. Seaton Begg and his constant companion, pathologist Dr 'Taffy' Sinclair, both head the secret British Home Office section of the Metatemporal Investigation Department -- an organisation whose function is understood only by the most high-ranking government people around the world -- and a number of powerful criminals. Begg's cases cover a multitude of crimes in dozens of alternate worlds, generally where transport is run by electricity, where the internal combustion engine is unknown, and where giant airships are the chief form of international carrier. He investigates the murder of English Prime Minister 'Lady Ratchet', the kidnapping of the king of a country taken over by a totalitarian regime, and the death of Geli Raubel, Adolf Hitler's mistress. Other adventures take him to a wild west where 'the Masked Buckaroo' is tracking down a mysterious red-eyed Apache known as the White Wolf; to 1960s’ Chicago where a girl has been killed in a sordid disco; and to an independent state of Texas controlled by neocon Christians with oily (and bloody) hands. He visits Paris, where he links up with his French colleagues of the Sûreté du Temps Perdu. In several cases the fanatical Adolf Hitler is his opponent, but his arch-enemy is the mysterious black sword wielding aristocrat known as Zenith the Albino, a drug-dependent, charismatic exile from a distant realm he once ruled. In each story the Metatemporal Detectives’ cases take them to worlds at once like and unlike our own, sometimes at odds with and sometimes in league with the beautiful adventuresses Mrs. Una Persson or Lady Rosie von Bek. At last Begg and Sinclair come face to face with their nemesis on the moonbeam roads which cross between the universes, where the great Eternal Balance itself is threatened with destruction and from which only the luckiest and most daring of metatemporal adventurers will return. These fast-paced mysteries pay homage to Moorcock's many literary enthusiasms for authors as diverse as Clarence E Mulford, Dashiell Hammett, Georges Simenon, and his boyhood hero, Sexton Blake. { 327pp, 155x230mm, October 2007; HB, £16.99, 1591025966:9781591025962 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

PROJECT MARS : A Technical Tale [Dr Wernher von Braun] This never-before-printed science fiction novel by the original 'rocket man', Dr Wernher von Braun, combines technical fact with a human story line in the way that only a true dreamer can realise. Written more than half a century ago, this enthusiastic tale of human space exploration, based on detailed and accurate science, has lingered unpublished in von Braun’s personal files until now, nearly 30 years after his death and 57 years after it was written. This exclusive von Braun treasure comes complete with an appendix of his original calculations and technical drawings, made in the late 1940s, on which the story's journey is based. This novel takes the reader through the entire adventure -- the planning for a Mars mission, the building of the mighty space ships, the long journey, the amazing discoveries made on Mars, and the return home. Gary Holt, former Chief Instructor of Rocket Pilots for the US Space Force, leads a 10-ship multinational team to Mars -- a Mars with one surprising difference from our Mars! -- and after spending months exploring the red planet, brings his mission home a complete success. The author's detailed attention to the actions and feelings of the characters -- both those who went and those who stayed behind -- makes this an adventure of human proportions, rather than merely another fanciful tale. { 280pp, 155x230mm, October 2006; PB, £7.95, 0973820330:9780973820331 , Apogee Books }

He is human, but what does that mean? { 225pp, 155x230mm, June 2008; PB, £9.99, 1591026466:9781591026464 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }

STARSHIP -- MERCENARY [Mike Resnick] The date is 1968 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all-out war with the Teroni Federation. Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of a media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Branded mutineers, the Teddy R has quit the Republic, never to return. Seeking to find a new life, Wilson Cole first remade the Teddy R as a pirate ship plying the spaceways of the lawless Inner Frontier. But military discipline and honour were a poor match for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole’s principles naturally limited his targets. Taking on a new role, the Teddy R becomes a mercenary ship, hiring out to the highest bidder. Whether it’s evacuating a hospital before war can reach it, freeing a client from an alien prison, or stopping a criminal cartel from extorting money from a terrified planet, the crew of the Teddy R proves equal to the task. Along the way they form a partnership with the once human Platinum Duke, team up with a former enemy, and make the unique Singapore Station their headquarters. But the life of a mercenary is not always predictable, and eventually circumstance pits Cole and the Teddy R against his right-hand woman, the former Pirate Queen known as the Valkyrie. Soon the fragile trust that has grown between these two legends is put to the test as they find themselves on opposite sides of a job. { 323pp, 155x230mm, December 2007; HB, £16.99, 1591025990:9781591025993 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
STARSHIP -- PIRATE [Mike Resnick] The date is 1967 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all-out war with the Teroni Federation. After his latest exploit saved millions of lives but embarrassed his superiors, Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of the media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Now branded mutineers, the crew of the Teddy R. has quit the Republic, never to return. Seeking to find a new life for themselves, Wilson Cole and comrades remake the Teddy R. as a pirate ship and set sail for the lawless Inner Frontier. Here, powerful warlords, cut-throat pirates, and struggling colonies compete for survival in a game where you rarely get a second chance to learn the rules. But military discipline is poor preparation for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole’s principles naturally limit his targets. Seeking an education on the nature of piracy, Cole hunts more knowledgeable players. Enter the beautiful but deadly Valkyrie, Val for short, and the enigmatic alien fence known as David Copperfield. But hanging over everything is the fearsome alien pirate -- the Hammerhead Shark. With "Starship: Pirate", five-time Hugo winner Mike Resnick continues the story begun in his very first military SF. Will the galaxy ever be the same? { 336pp, 155x230mm, December 2006; HB, £16.99, 1591024900:9781591024903 , Prometheus Books (Pyr) }
STARSHIP: REBEL ((Starship Series: 4)) [Mike Resnick] The date is 1968 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, dominated by the human race, is in the midst of an all-out war with the Teroni Federation. Almost a year has passed since the events of "Starship: Mercenary". Captain Wilson Cole now commands a fleet of almost fifty ships, and he has become the single greatest military force on the Inner Frontier. With one exception. The Republic still comes and goes as it pleases, taking what it wants, conscripting men, and extorting taxes, even though the Frontier worlds receive nothing in exchange. And, of course, the government still wants Wilson Cole and the starship Theodore Roosevelt. He has no interest in confronting such an overwhelming force, and constantly steers clear of them. Then an incident occurs that changes everything, and Cole declares war on the Republic. Outnumbered and always outgunned, his fleet is no match for the Republic's millions of military vessels, even after he forges alliances with the warlords he previously hunted down. It's a hopeless cause...but that's just what Wilson Cole and the Teddy R. are best at. { 290pp, 155x230mm, December 2008; HB, £16.99, 1591026954:9781591026952 , Prometheus Books (PYR) }
STEAM MAGNATE : ...A Novel of the Broken Glass City [Dana Copithorne] Departing from formulaic themes involving quests, magicians, and mythical animals, this fantasy novel follows a character with powers more ordinary than most uber-wizards. Having inherited the steam-power legacy and the mysterious ability to funnel the assets of others into his own coffers through the mere use of ink and paper, Eson is hated by some and feared by others. While recovering from a disastrous relationship with a woman of his own magical kind, he meets a young woman who isn't who she claims to be, and Eson must now defend himself against challenges far too close to home. Set in a world that is a tempting concoction of fairy-tale charm and everyday existence, this work explores the inequities of social class and the realities living among the less fortunate. { 314pp, 130x185mm, September 2006; PB, £10.99, 1933083085:9781933083087 , IPG (Aio Publishing Company) }
