101 ROAD TALES
[Clement Salvadori]
Popular motojournalist Clement Salvadori has been sharing his stories from the road with the readers of Rider magazine since 1988. Now, 101 of those engaging Road Tales have been brought together in one book, cleverly illustrated by his long-time friend Gary Brown. Salvadori loves to travel by motorcycle and loves to write. Combining the two has given him a thoroughly satisfactory life. His contentment and joy of living shine through this collection of columns from the past two decades. Don't expect a detailed travel guide to places near and far, but rather a guide to the enjoyment of travelling, especially by motorcycle. These tales are spun by an observant and experienced traveller who can make a quick ride on the back roads near his home just as entertaining as a trip across the country. Meet some of the characters he has encountered, laugh with him at some of his blunders, and join him for bread, cheese, wine, and a stupendous vista somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of humanity. Though he does admit to being destination-oriented at times, many of his columns focus on the little things that make the journey itself the most memorable -- the rhythm of the road, the music of the bike, the beauty of the ride, and the exhilaration of being at one with the bike and the road. For those Rider fans who always turn to his column first, he is considered one of their personal friends. He has inspired many a rider to take a more leisurely pace and to be more aware and appreciative of the surrounding countryside. Salvadori's informal style and clear-eyed view make reading these 101 Road Tales like listening to the stories of a well-travelled and entertaining dinner guest.

DESOLATION SOUND
: A History
[Heather Harbord]
Beautiful Desolation Sound, 150 km north of Vancouver, has for many years been the most popular cruising destination on the BC coast, but is today almost as devoid of local occupants as it was in 1792 when the dyspeptic Captain George Vancouver gave it its misleading name. It has not always been this way. Thick clamshell middens in remote bays, rotted pilings on silent estuaries, ambitious stone terraces on vacant hillsides, overgrown fences around deserted fields, even abandoned railroads -- all contribute to an impression that this is an area full of ghosts, an area with a storied past. In Desolation Sound, author Heather Harbord details that remarkable past and brings those ghosts back to unforgettable life. 'Desolation Sound' is a captivating book full of great characters, heroic deeds, humorous anecdotes and well-researched fact. It fills a crucial hole in the history of the BC coast.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL
: Tips, Technology, Advanced Techniques
[Dale Coyner]
This book is written to help motorcyclists prepare themselves and their motorcycle for travelling long distances over extended periods. Whether you are getting ready for a weekend trip beyond your home turf, or for a transcontinental odyssey lasting several years, Coyner’s book details the fundamentals for riding in comfort, safety, and convenience. In three major sections, the book covers trip planning, rider preparation, and outfitting the motorcycle. An appropriate level of planning for a long motorcycle trip can help you maximise enjoyment and minimise irritating annoyances on the road. Coyner lays out the steps for planning a worry-free trip. A successful trip should start with the rider physically and mentally prepared. On the road, having good riding gear can make a dramatic difference in comfort and safety as the weather changes from dry to wet, and from hot to cold. Coyner describes the important aspects of personal preparation and describes the major kinds of riding gear and how they work to control body temperature and moisture. As motorcycle technology has evolved, so have after market accessories, which are made to address virtually every special need. Coyner shows you step-by-step how electrical modifications can be made, and provides specific sections on high-performance lighting and on being conspicuous, GPS and other cockpit instruments, entertainment and communication devices, cameras and camcorders, ergonomic enhancements, suspension improvements, luggage and storage additions, and trailers.

HOLD ON!
: World Champion Sidecar Rider
[Stan Dibben. Forewords by Alan Robinson, MBE & Dr George Cohen]
Stan lives life not just to the full, but right on the edge! There are no words to describe someone who has been a world champion sidecar rider -- the one just barely in the sidecar, balancing the machine with his body at 150mph! Even more amazingly, by then Stan had already been a professional trumpet player, electrician and sailor as well as a highly respected solo motorcycle racer on the GP circuits. He worked with some of the well known names at both BSA and Norton, raced the first ever Dommie Racer, helped in the successful world land speed record set by Donald Campbell in Bluebird, and then became the man who did so much to introduce NGK spark plugs into the UK. He even designed supermarket trolleys that handled 'like a Ferrari! This is the remarkable story of an amazing man who has managed to fit more fun and adventure into his years than most of us would even dream of. His story is both uplifting and a remarkable insight into the world of sidecar racing and British industry. A book that will fill you with wonder, but one that will also open people's eyes on a now rapidly fading era.

MANXLINE
[Stan Basnett]
This is the story of Manx Line, a private shipping company which started the first roIl-on/roll-off service between the Isle of Man and the UK. It was spawned from a conventional containerised cargo service which had started in the wake of industrial action by the National Union of Seamen. The new company with its single ship took on the long-established Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, the principal carrier of cargo to the Island, and won. Its success inevitably led to a merger of the two companies. Manx Line was to have a major and lasting impact on the Island infrastructure and economy.

RIVER PALACE
: The Many Lives of the Kingston
[Walter Lewis & Rick Neilson]
Steamboats carrying passengers from Hamilton to Montreal via the rapids of the St. Lawrence were a popular sight in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, the Kingston, an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton, appeared in the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured British North America in 1860, the Kingston became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. While many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces, the Kingston truly was one. In 1855, the Kingston, an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton (1802-82), appeared in the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) came to British North America for the first royal tour in 1860, the Kingston became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. Many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces. The Kingston was. The Kingston was wrecked many times and survived spectacular fires in 1872 and 1873. Late in her career, she was converted into a salvage vessel and renamed the Cornwall. In 1930 she was finally taken out and sunk near one of Kingston's ship graveyards. There she remained until diver Rick Neilson discovered her in 1989. Today, the once palatial Kingston is a popular dive site and tourist attraction.

SAVVY GUIDE TO CAR MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
[Kate J Chase]
Has the technology in your car or truck passed you by? We hear mechanics talk about the "computer" in our car, and every visit to the service centre requires a "diagnostic" check where our car is hooked up to a machine that somehow tells the mechanic what is wrong. While today’s cars rely heavily on computers and electronics to maintain a high level of performance and efficiency, there is still much that you can do when it comes to maintenance and repair of your car. General maintenance and repair of your vehicle need not be an expensive or daunting task. A well-tuned car means better fuel mileage, a more comfortable ride, and the pride from "doing it yourself". Whether you are male or female, this book is written to help you perform the multitudes of tasks that you can perform, without the aid of a mechanic and his or her magic diagnostic contraption. This book steps the reader through a tour of a vehicle’s major parts and connections, how to play car detective, and how to find out more information when needed. General maintenance and repair topics are covered, as well as good advice on when to seek professional help. Topics addressed include: Troubleshooting; Equipment Needs; Sample Repairs Maintenance; Selecting Equipment; Finding a Mechanic.

RAILS TO PENN STATE
: The Story of the Bellefonte Central
[Michael Bezilla & Jack Rudnicki]
More than five hundred short line railroads existed in the United States at the industry's height and Pennsylvania had more than any other state. The history of the Bellefonte Central, which operated in central Pennsylvania from the 1880s until 1982, is a classic story of the rise and decline of short line railroads nationwide. Connecting with the Pennsylvania Railroad -- a company that proved to be both friend and foe -- the Bellefonte Central played an important role in developing the region's renowned limestone and hot-blast ironmaking industries and was Penn State University's economic lifeline for generations.

REMARKABLE AUSTRALIAN FARM MACHINES
[Graeme R Quick]
This book tells the story of the men, machines and equipment developed for Australian agriculture. It traces developments ranging from broadacre cultivation to garden rotaries, to prickly pear destruction, to auto headers, to banana harvesting for paper making. Contemporary advertising sprinkled through the book provides a backdrop for the people, companies and products that have been important to our farming history. Did you know that tractor hands-free steering was first commercialised by Beeline in Moree, NSW? That the world’s biggest paddock cleaning machines are made in Banana? That single-pass grain and straw harvesting began in Western Australia? Dr Graeme Quick, is an internationally-recognised expert on farm equipment. He has worked on farm machinery engineering in over thirty countries and holds fourteen patents, two of which are incorporated into grain harvesters world-wide. This is the companion volume to "Australian Tractors, Indigenous Tractors and Self-propelled Machines in Rural Australia", the definitive reference on the 40-plus Australian manufacturers of tractors and self-propelled machines. He has published half a dozen other books. This one fits a unique place in documenting remarkable machines in the Australian economic and historical context.

ROYAL TRANSPORT
: An Inside Look at the History of Royal Travel
[Peter Pigott]
The conveyance of royalty, whether to Balmoral or Buffalo, by Rolls Royce or Canadian Pacific train, has its own mysterious traditions and protocols. With dry humour and a keen sense of history, Peter Pigott describes how the British royal family has adapted to technological innovations. Organised thematically, the book is packed with well-researched details. We know all about the royal family's lives, especially their romances and scandals, but do we know who was the first monarch to drive a motorcar? The first to fly in an aircraft? Which king so loved his yacht that he ordered it scuttled on his death? The book offers a fascinating look at how British royalty has travelled since the invention of steam. This richly illustrated book covers all modes of royal transport in Britain and the Commonwealth -- some of the most famous and yet unknown transport in the world.

STAYIN' SAFE
: The Art & Science of Riding Really Well
[Lawrence Grodsky]
Larry Grodsky devoted his life to motorcycle safety. Through the riding courses he taught and his "Stayin’ Safe" columns in Rider magazine (from 1988 until his untimely death in 2006), he helped thousands of motorcyclists improve their skills and their ability to ride really well. This collection of Grodsky’s columns reveals his ability to illuminate complex and sometimes highly technical subjects with an entertaining and personal style, spiced with his trademark wry wit and keen observations of human behaviour. A master teacher, Grodsky was constantly learning from his students, always striving to find the best way to lead riders toward mastery of their two-wheeled vehicles. Many of his columns focus on helping riders develop specific skills (complete with practice exercises), while others deal with the riding environment and riders’ mental processes. While it is packed with information useful to both novice and experienced motorcyclists, this book is not structured as a how-to guide to motorcycle proficiency. Rather, it is a collection of thoughtful essays to be read and savoured individually. Readers will be rewarded by the beautifully written stories of a great motorcycle riding instructor who has left his mark on a generation of grateful riders.

BMW R90S
[Ian Falloon]
Although in production for only three years, the R90S was the most significant post-war production BMW motorcycle. Its release coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the BMW boxer motorcycle, and started a new era for the boxer twin. Prior to the R90S BMW motorcycles were idiosyncratic, expensive, and primarily luxury touring machines designed to appeal to the older rider. Although the new-generation R75/5 did much to change the staid image that existed during the 1960s, the R75/5 still couldn’t compete with the new high performance Japanese Superbikes that came in the early 1970s. That all changed when Bob Lutz persuaded BMW’s conservative management to sanction the development of the R90S, a sporting machine that could take on the best in the world. Ian Falloon tells the story of this important bike and how it evolved, noting all significant changes from year to year. Falloon writes with enough detail to make restoring these great bikes much easier, and also includes a chapter on how to live with an R90S, using them as reliable daily commuters, making popular upgrades, and what to look for if you are in the market for one. Because the R90S was built in relatively large numbers, it is still possible to buy one at a reasonable price. Excellent parts availability, a wealth of specialist services, and an enthusiastic owners circle ensure the R90S is not merely a show pony, but a classic motorcycle to be ridden. Restoration is relatively straightforward, and with outstanding looks and high-quality equipment, the R90S has justifiably garnered a huge following.

STEAM LION
: A Biography of Samuel Cunard
[John G Langley]
The summer of 1840, and Boston Harbor is thrumming with politicians, business people, civic leaders, members of the judiciary, and the public. The city is ready for a celebration, and its citizens are waiting impatiently for the arrival of a new age. The elegant Britannia finally enters the harbour loaded with mail from England ushering in the Age of Steam to the Atlantic. This event crystallises Samuel Cunard's vision and the world will never be the same. This is the story of a man born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, whose father and mother fled colonial New York after the American Revolution, and became one the most powerful forces of international trade in the nineteenth century. His innovative steamship Britannia was the first reliable, timely link between the Old World and the New, and the transatlantic transportation of mail, goods, and passengers was revolutionised. The continued success of the Cunard Line is a testament to Samuel Cunard's brilliance as both a mariner and a businessman. The first full-length biography of one of the most fascinating figures in mercantile history, "Steam Lion" is an important and engaging record of a man, his business, and his times.

BORN TO BE WILD
: Harleys, Bikers & Music for Easy Riders
[Michael Stein & Michael Lichter]
Book and 4 CDs. When William S Harley and Arthur Davidson added an engine to their bicycle out of necessity about 100 years ago, they never dreamed that this would become the cornerstone of a legend. Unique recordings around the topic of the Harley allow you to immerse yourself into the American dream, a dream that has long since conquered the whole world. Music CDs: Four CDs from Country Music to Rock with artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers Band, Molly Hatchet, Hank Davison, Canned Heat, Motörhead, Judas Priest and Shania Twain pay a musical tribute to the legend.

WESTWOOD
: Everyone's Favourite Racing Circuit
[Tom Johnston]
Westwood (or 'Wetwood' as some called it) was the first purpose-built automobile road-racing track in Canada. Its location in Coquitlam on the slopes of British Columbia's coastal mountains meant that it often rained, but the rest of the time it may well have been the most beautiful racing circuit in the world. The track was built and owned by the Sports Car Club of British Columbia. SCCBC members viewed it as a special place where family members of racing enthusiasts grew up over its 32 seasons. The track ran just about any kind of racing that came along for cars, motorcycles and karts, but was best known for its spectacular races for smaller formula cars, Formula Atlantic in particular. Sadly, in 1990 Westwood suffered the common fate of racetracks located near expanding cities world-wide and was converted into a housing development and golf course.

FAY TAYLOUR
: Queen of Speedway
[Brian Belton; Introduction by Reg Fearman]
Fay Taylour was the most successful woman speedway rider -- ever. Her short but meteoric career spanned just a few years in the late 1920s until women were banned from the Speedway in 1930. In these few years Fay made a name for herself first in Trials riding, in which she won several Gold Medals, and then in Speedway, one of the toughest of all sports on a motorcycle. Fay competed against, and beat, most of the well known male speedway riders in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and became something of a legend -- the Queen of Speedway! This book is a biography of Fay and especially her motorcycle years in trials and speedway. It is a fascinating account of a truly remarkable woman and the early years of speedway in England, Australia and New Zealand.

LAST HURRAH!
: From Beijing to Arnhem 2005
[Des Molloy]
Also available as DVD and Book & DVD package. Des Molloy and Dick Huurdeman look like the sort of guys who should be sedately steering a sleigh in a Santa parade, not riding old single-banger British bikes half way across the world through some of the most difficult and remote terrain imaginable. Des' son Steve joined this intrepid pair as cameraman and general factotum for the highs and lows of an incident-packed three-month trek from Beijing to Arnhem on 'Penelope', a 1965 Yorkshire-made 650cc Panther, and 'Dutch Courage', a 1954 Norton 600. The route took them across the Northern-most of the Old Silk Roads over the roof of the world through China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, the burning deserts in Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Germany and finally to Arnhem in Holland. The journey was as traumatic as it was inspiring! Was this idiocy or odyssey? Decide for yourself as you read Des Molloy's account of their adventures and misadventures.

AUSTRALIAN RAILWAYMAN
: From Cadet Engineer to Railways Commissioner
[Ron Fitch]
Ron Fitch was born in 1910 into a railway family. He began his career as a 16-year-old engineering cadet and completed it, 46 years later, having worked at various times for two state railways and the Commonwealth, as Commissioner of South Australian Railways. In this book Fitch gives a vivid account not only of a career but of the camaraderie of the greater railway community, often experienced in the most trying of conditions. For almost three decades Fitch was 'on the wallaby', with postings scattered over half a continent, and as often as not living rough. This book gives an account of all this and more -- of laying track and the remarkable breed of men who do so, of advances in line-building techniques, of derailments and floods and washaways, of wrangles over attempts to implement standard gauge, of the politics of railways. Ron Fitch is uniquely placed to write a book for all train enthusiasts, in which he celebrates both the men and the machinery, the toil and the technology, that opened up a vast and sparsely populated continent. Nor has retirement dulled his spirit or his interest in railways. In 2002 he earned recognition from Guinness Book World Records when his thesis on South Australian railways made him the oldest recipient of a PhD.

COMENG
: A History of Commonwealth Engineering, Volume 1 -- 1921 to 1955
[John Dunn]
Commonwealth Engineering began as Smith & Waddington in 1921 -- a small firm building custom bodies for motorcars and small buses. The Depression forced a restart as Waddingtons Body Works leading shortly after to a move to Clyde in western Sydney. A larger factory enabled the company to begin building railway rolling stock but the advent of the war brought new changes. The Federal government took over control and the plant became a manufacturer of wartime products -- aircraft hangars, pontoons, ocean going lighters -- as well as large number of freight wagons. The company was so successful that the Federal government took up the controlling shares in 1946 and the name changed to Commonwealth Engineering. Post war brought huge contracts for double deck buses and passenger railway vehicles. In the early 1950’s the company expanded into Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. By 1955 an agreement was signed with the Budd Company of Philadelphia giving Comeng a license to build stainless steel passenger train in Australia. It was a turning point in the company’s fortunes, leading to a production of a new generation of passenger vehicles which set the stage for Comeng to become the premier train manufacturer in the Southern Hemisphere. John Dunn joined Commonwealth Engineering at Granville in 1956 as an apprentice draftsman and did a certificate course in Mechanical Engineering at Sydney Technical College. He was with the company until the Granville facility closed in June 1989, although he continued to work as a design and production consultant for the new owners of the Victorian branch for a further 10 years. At Comeng Granville he held the position of senior concept engineer in rolling stock design for 12 years. At the close of the company its owners ordered the destruction of all the archives and records. He managed to salvage some material from Granville and a colleague did the same from the Rocklea plant in Brisbane. He has kept all this material in storage until he retired and could do something useful with it. Since the activities of Commonwealth Engineering represented a significant part of the industrial and manufacturing history of this country his intention is to attempt to document its 70-year story in that light. The author spent nearly three years in tracking down some 350 key ex-employees in all States of Australia so that he could interview them for their first-hand account of events as they recall them. So far he has done more than 220 interviews. Many of these interviews are with men in their 90s who started there long before he was born. The oldest of these began with the Camperdown company in 1928. Their stories and insights are remarkable. In addition to the company directors, managers, shop superintendents and lowly tradesmen, he also interviewed politicians, railway officials and ex-commissioners in so far as their roles related to Commonwealth Engineering. Each has a story to tell which helps form the fabric of the rich tapestry of this company’s history. A remarkable outcome of these interviews is the discovery of vast resources of documents, drawings and photos which have been retained by these men and which they have been happy to pass on to the author. He has photos virtually from day one right through to the end -- to date some 27,000 in all. This will be a monumental work in three volumes, to be published over the next three years.

FRANCES SMITH
: Palace Steamer of the Upper Great Lakes, 1867-1896
[Scott L Cameron; Foreword by C Patrick Labadie]
The Frances Smith was not only the first steamboat to be built in Owen Sound, but also the largest vessel on Georgian Bay at that time. By far the most luxurious vessel to sail the Upper Great Lakes from a Canadian port, she was known as a 'palace steamer'. In the mid-to-late-19th century, the Frances Smith set the standard for speed, spacious accommodation and quality service on Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. The story of the Frances Smith, full of adventure and courageous actions, and even including disreputable behaviour, is a genuine story of life on the Great Lakes in the latter part of the 1800s. Meticulously researched and documented by Scott L Cameron, this book is an exploration of a special part of our past that will be of great interest to history buffs in general, and maritime historians in particular.

PIONEER ZEPHYR
: America’s First Diesel-Electric Stainless Steel Streamliner
[Carl R Byron]
Swift, stylish and so sophisticated, The Burlington Railroad’s God of the West Wind, the Pioneer Zephyr, was a 104-ton, three-car streamlined speedster, setting a record of 13 hours, four minutes on the 1,015-mile run between Chicago and Denver. In April of 1934 the Zephyr posed for its official photo, then went on an exhibition tour that visited 46 cities where nearly half a million people saw it. The Zephyr exceeded 100 mph numerous times in its lifetime, amazing the public and the railroad industry alike. The Pioneer Zephyr spawned many look-alikes on the Burlington, it was the centre of attention in the movie The Silver Streak, and it eventually was donated to the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago.

RAILWAYS, THE MARKET & THE GOVERNMENT
The debate on rail privatisation often seems to focus on very narrow issues. Those on both sides of the argument seem to be able to employ a mass of statistics to prove their point. Proponents of privatisation suggest, with some credibility, that all was reasonably well with the privatised railways until the Hatfield disaster. Opponents point to spiralling costs since privatisation. The authors of this monograph examine privatisation in the context of the long history of continual government intervention. The government imposed upon the industry a particular structure -- separation of track and wheel. It also wrapped it up in increasing amounts of regulation. After examining the history of government intervention in the railways and the privatisation process, the authors of this monograph then examine the future of railway policy. Should the industry be allowed to evolve its own structure -- remerging the ownership of track and wheel if it wishes? What aspects of a railway should be regulated? Who should own the various parts of the infrastructure? This monograph is essential reading for all with an interest in railway policy and the process of privatisation.

AUSTRALIAN CRUISE SHIPS
[Peter Plowman]
During the past thirty years cruising has become a popular form of holiday for an increasing number of Australians. The first cruise from Australia was operated by the P&O liner Strathaird, which departed Sydney on 23 December 1932 for five nights to Brisbane and Norfolk Island. Up to 1939 P & O and Orient Line vessels operated occasional cruises between line voyages from Britain, but these ceased in 1939. It was not until the mid-1950s that cruises began operating again, but these were still on a very occasional basis, again on P & O and Orient Line vessels engaged in the regular trade between Britain and Australia. During the 1960s other shipping companies also began operating occasional cruises, but there were no ships assigned to the cruise trade on a regular basis. Things began to change in the early 1970s, when the advent of the Boeing 747 transformed international travel. Instead of spending four weeks or more at sea, Australians could now fly to Britain and Europe in one day, and this spelled doom for the long-haul passenger liner. Many of these vessel ended up in the scrap yard, but some were refitted to full time cruise ships, and thus began the cruise boom. The first liners to be engaged in full time cruising from Australia were all converted, having been built for other trades. For many thousands of Australians, these ships introduced them to the delights of cruising, and the number of Australians making a cruise has steadily increased over the past three decades. This book provides details of many of the ships that cruised out of Australian ports from the early 1970s up to 2000, and all the cruise liners to have been seen in local waters since 2001, as well as a look ahead to the liners scheduled to come here later in 2007 and into 2008. It is my hope that turning the pages of this book will bring back many happy memories to cruise travellers, and hopefully inspire those who have not yet ventured out to sea to make the plunge and discover the joy of cruising. The ships are listed in the order in which they entered the local cruise market. As the pages proceed it will be noted that over the years the size of the liners seen in Australia has steadily increased. In the early days cruise liners were usually no more than 25,000 gross tons, but in the summer of 2002 we welcomed the first liner to exceed 100,000 gross tons. In February 2007 the second largest passenger liner ever built, Queen Mary 2, will make a visit to our shores. For the summer of 2007-08, the Australian cruise trade will be serviced by three liners exceeding 70,000 gross tons, something that would have been thought impossible even five years ago. This book includes 110 liners that have operated cruises in Australia waters over the past 35 years. The text gives full details, including important dates, types of accommodation, interesting facts and general information, on every ship. There is also a colour picture on every page, none of which have been published previously as they are all taken by the author or his friends in the shipping fraternity.

AUSTRALIAN CRUISER
: Perth 1939-1942
[Ian Pfennigwerth]
For all but a few months from her commissioning in June 1939 to her sinking on 1 March 1942, the Australian light cruiser Perth was engaged in wartime operations against the forces of Germany, Italy, Vichy France and Japan. She served in the West Indies, the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Mediterranean and, finally in the Java Sea. Her operations included the blockading of German merchant ships in neutral ports, escorting vital troop convoys to the Middle East, attacking shore positions in Libya and Syria and providing air defence of convoys, especially from the feared Stuka dive bombers of the German Luftwaffe. She participated in several pivotal battles, especially Matapan and Java Sea, and in the evacuation of Commonwealth forces from Greece and Crete in April-May 1941. The book is a story of adventure and courage in adversity, written as a tribute by a former commanding officer of the cruiser’s namesake, the guided missile destroyer Perth II.

BAYCHIMO
: Arctic Ghost Ship
[Anthony Dalton]
Baychimo is the legendary Hudson's Bay Company ship that survived for years in the Arctic after being abandoned by her crew in 1931. In the 1920s, the crew of Baychimo set up trading posts in eastern Canada, sailed on fur-trading expeditions to Siberia during the turbulent years of the Russian Civil War, and eventually made the dangerous annual voyage around Alaska to Canada's western Arctic coast, shouldering her way through the ice floes to re-supply the HBC's remote trading posts. Anthony Dalton tells the story of the hardy ship and her sometimes irascible captain, Sydney Cornwell, and through them brings to life the larger story of the community of northern traders, hunters and sailors of which Baychimo was a part. But this ship's story had a remarkable twist. When Baychimo was caught in 1931 in an ice floe that refused to let go, her crew expected her to sink at any moment, and abandoned ship. But she was as stubborn as the ice, and she floated away unharmed to begin what would prove to be the longest phase of her seemingly charmed career: for the next four decades she would appear on the horizon at unexpected times and places, always defiantly upright and afloat, becoming the legendary ghost ship of the Arctic.

CHANDRIS LINERS & CELEBRITY CRUISES
[Peter Plowman]
The story of the passenger liners operated by the Chandris Group is unique among the major shipping companies. From very small beginnings in the Greek coastal trades, the Chandris family company developed into a renowned concern, at one time operating some of the most famous liners in the world. Chandris Line was formed by Anthony Chandris to operate a regular liner service between Greece and Australia. A suitable vessel was purchased, and after minor alterations, entered the Australian trade at the end of 1960 under the name Patris. Other vessels were acquired: Bretagne, Ellinis, Britanis, Queen Frederica and Australis. The Chandris Line service from Europe to Australia lasted a mere eighteen years, yet in that brief period the company established themselves very firmly in Australian maritime history. One ship alone, Australis, made 62 voyages from Europe to Australia bringing over 150,000 new settlers to this country.

DANGEROUS PASSAGE
: Issues in the Arctic
[Gerard Kenney]
Over the five hundred or so years that man searched for an elusive sea passage from Europe to Asia through the North American land mass, dozens of ships were lost and hundreds of mariners died. Eventually, a sea route stretching through the waters of the archipelago and along Canada's mainland Arctic coast was pieced together. But could ships navigate the Northwest Passage to the extent that it could be used as an international shipping route? Two seagoing captains and their ships -- a Norwegian, Roald Amundsen, and a Canadian of Norwegian birth, Henry Asbjorn Larsen -- answered that question in the first half of the 20th century. The first part of the book recounts their successful efforts. The second part addresses the many unsettling environmental and sovereignty issues concerning the future of the Northwest Passage in this time of melting ice caps, glaciers and sea ice in the Arctic.

FROM THE WHEELHOUSE
: Tugboaters Tell Their Own Stories
[Doreen Armitage]
Doreen Armitage interviewed 16 old-time tugboat captains, engineers and deckhands to assemble this intimate and often hair-raising account of life aboard BC tugs. Tugs are called to emergencies on the water, working with the Coast Guard and fireboats to save lives and retrieve damaged vessels. Storms, fog, riptides and whirlpools, bridges, even other boats operated by inexperienced or careless hands can put a tug and its crew in jeopardy. Beautifully illustrated with archival photos and images from the personal collections of the skippers who appear within its pages, From the Wheelhouse is both a lively, personal look at the history of towboating in BC and an engaging portrait of the famous coastal characters and vessels that have shaped this region's maritime history.

INTO THE SAVAGE LAND
: The Alaskan Journal of Edward Adams
[Ernest Sipes]
In the middle of the night, October 1850, three British sailors searching for lost countrymen are set upon the rugged shore on the far edge of the vast Russian Empire. Only two will return from this cruel and harsh land called Alyaksa. Edward Adams, a young Victorian-era doctor, was part of an expedition sent to Russian Alaska in search of explorer John Franklin and his crew. As the mission's naturalist, Adams filled a journal with observations, recordings and drawings of his excursion, revealing a person who thrived on new experiences and had a true gift for recording what he observed. Full of drama and adventure, "Into the Savage Land" takes reader back to the Alaska of 1850. Reminiscent of the popular serialised stories that appeared in British papers at the time, the journal presents a first-person account of travels into the interior of the colony and the inherent dangers involved, including freezing temperatures, suspicious Russians and warring Natives. Edited and annotated by Ernest Sipes, this publication offers an exceptional opportunity for students of the literature of Alaska and anyone interested in the region's colourful history.

SS TERRA NOVA (1884-1943)
: From the Arctic to the Antarctic -- Whaler, Sealer & Polar Exploration Ship
[Michael C Tarver; Foreword by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal]
This is the story of one of Britain's most famous expedition ships put together from accounts recorded by men who sailed in her. It covers a sixty year history of the ship built at Dundee by a famous Scottish shipbuilding company for the late 19th century days of whaling and sealing before coal, gas and electricity took over from animal oils in domestic and commercial use. The Terra Nova operated from her home port of Dundee and afterwards St. John's, Newfoundland, when a sea-going career in the sealfishery during those times brought a hard way of life with many human losses and tragedies.
REVIEW: "This book is intended to be a rip-roaring yarn, and for the most part it succeeds...a worthwhile addition to the library..." -- Chesley W. Sanger, International Journal of Maritime History, Volume XIX, No. 1, June 2007. "Splendid reading...in the heroic nature of high latitude navigation." -- International Journal of Maritime History. "A richly illustrated book, beautifully crafted, a pleasure to own" -- Polar Record, A Journal of Arctic and Antarctic Research.

THROUGH WATER, FIRE & ICE
: Schooner Nancy of the War of 1812
[Barry Gough]
The schooner Nancy, legendary vessel of Great Lakes and Canadian history, lived a thousand lives in a noted career that began in Detroit and ended in a fiery explosion in Nottawasaga River in the last year of the War of 1812. This dramatic, soundly researched narrative depicts the reality of the men who sailed her while fighting a gritty war. Carrying the war to the enemy in hazardous ways, they fought against a powerful American foe, using stealth and daring to maintain the besieged Canadian position in the last armed struggle for the heartland of North America. The loss of the Nancy inspired generations to regard her as a symbol of devotion to king and country.

WOMEN & CHILDREN LAST
: The Burning of the Emigrant Ship Cospatrick
[Charles Clark]
A sea voyage in the nineteenth century was not for the faint-hearted. The hazards were many and accidents commonplace. Of the ways a ship might meet its end, destruction by fire was perhaps the most feared. Wooden sailing vessels were particularly vulnerable and without breathing apparatus it was next to impossible to fight a fire below decks. The period saw a number of catastrophic shipboard fires, but that involving the New Zealand-bound emigrant ship Cospatrick was certainly the most destructive. When she burned and sank off the coast of Southern Africa in 1874, nearly 500 people lost their lives. There was a desperate battle to quench the fire, a huge death toll as the vessel was being abandoned, and acts of cannibalism in the one lifeboat that remained afloat. This book is based on research carried out in Britain, New Zealand and Australia. While it relates the story of the Cospatrick and the nightmare survival of only three people, it also looks at the larger picture of safety at sea.

DEEP SPACE
[Stephen Whitfield]
For as long as mankind has possessed a sense of wonder, astronomy has been practised in one form or another. It can be thought of as having graduated to the status of a true science at the point in history when it became forever separated from astrology. Clearly they were not of the same mould; astronomy was hard to do; astrology was merely hard to swallow. The next significant change came in the early 20th century. Men and women of science felt it was no longer sufficient to simply catalogue the visual characteristics of the stars and other heavenly bodies; the desire to understand their physical makeup, behaviour and creation gave us the study of astrophysics. As the name suggests, this is the physics of astronomical bodies and the space they inhabit. During the second half of the 20th century interest turned also to the other eight planets of our solar system, spawning several new disciplines relating to Planetology, the formation of the solar system, and the possibility of past or present extraterrestrial life. Every decade of the last century brought ever more numerous and fascinating discoveries. It was not until 1930 that Pluto, the ninth planet, was discovered. Only as late as 1978 was it discovered that Pluto possessed a moon. And now, in late 2005, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has given astronomers evidence that Pluto may have not one, but three moons. In recent decades much interest has also been given to the far reaches of the universe -- far stars; other galaxies, some old, some still forming; and even the earliest detectable galaxies of the universe, at the very limits of our ability to probe. Each field of space study requires its own special tools and its own expertise. The many programs that come loosely under the headings of astronomy and space exploration are as varied and rewarding as the fascinating discoveries that they have made. To the uninformed, the exploration of deep space may seem esoteric and unexciting, but in truth the wonder and the beauty of deep space outshine almost anything that Earth and man can offer. The time when people can go and explore deep space in person is still well into the future. Until then, we shall continue to do as we have done for the past 40 years, sending unmanned spacecraft and satellites as our proxies and ambassadors to the universe. This book examines deep space exploration missions, past, present and future, and their results.

MARS
[Robert Godwin]
If you always thought that it was Giovanni Schiaparelli who first coined the phrase 'Canali' pertaining to the straight lines he appeared to observe on Mars you’d be wrong. In 1858 an astronomer working at the Vatican observatory named father Pietro Angelo Secchi took it upon himself to create his own drawings of Mars. The red planet was now nearing a close approach to earth and the powerful Vatican telescope was capable of resolving detail previously invisible to most astronomers. Secchi thought he saw a series of straight lines on the Martian surface so he made an innocuous notation in his notes. His sketches and articles were published in 1859 in which he referred several times to 'Canale Atlantico' or 'Canale Ceruleo'. His regrettable choice of words would not have an impact for another eight years. This volume tells not only of people and places that have influenced mankind’s relationship with the enigmatic red planet, but it also shows you the colour drawings that Secchi made, which were provided to us directly by the Vatican itself. Along with many other interesting stories, drawings and photographs this book will be a prize for both the novice or ardent student of Mars.
