The Armament Tide : Rearming America

Arming the US military is an ongoing process, one of vital importance. This book will help America’s leaders, educators and general public better understand how to manage the business of rearmament. Drawing on historical anecdotes, common business principles and the author’s 31 years of military service, the book provides an engaging and educational look at the complexities of arming the American military.

"It's readable, doesn't bog down into the inevitable minutiae that characterizes most volumes about the defense business and it offers a serious warning - that the U.S. defense business in general has become less competitive. That course can and should be changed. Bravo!" - Amazon reviewer

The Art of War

No man in the history of war has exerted a greater influence on the development of modern warfare than Napoleon Banaparte. No man has been more responsible for Napoleon’s influence than Antoine-Henri Jomini. It has been said with good reason that many a civil war general went into battle with a sword in the one hand and Jomini’s "The Art of War" in the other. Jomini’s writings were the means by which Napoleonic technique was transfused into military thought of the Civil War, which was so important in the development of the basic pattern of modern battlefield procedure. This massive work composed by Jomini was the premier military strategy composition of the 19th century. Even the works of Clausewitz were not studied quite as much as this teacher of the Napoleon method of warfare. In fact, it was Jomini who influenced the leadership of both the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War. "The Art of War" is one of the first and most enduring textbooks on modern war.

Battle at Best

S L A Marshall is justly famous for his unique method of battle analysis. In "Battle at Best" he applies this method of the assessment of data gleaned from on-the-spot interviews with the troops themselves -- to eight critical actions of World War II and Korea. Taken together, these battles illustrate the infinite variety of combat experience and reveal new truths about soldiers under fire. From the Korean War, General Marshall highlights the role of Easy Company in the attack on Hill 180 ("Fix Bayonets and Follow Me") and two phases of the 1st Marine Division experience during the Chosin Reservoir operation. From World War II comes the title, the fight against overwhelming odds of one platoon of the 101st Airborne Division at Best, Holland and, most movingly, the self-sacrifice of Private Joe Mann. Also included is an account of the 29th Infantry Division at Omaha Beach, two stories of Pacific combat and, finally, a surprising view of the liberation of Paris-and of Ernest Hemingway who participated.

Between Two Oceans : A Military History of Singapore from First Settlement to Final British Withdrawal

Many books have been written about Singapore's much vaunted position as a crucial maritime centre along the East-West trading route but one aspect of its history -- the military perspective -- has, for the most part, escaped serious scholarly attention. "Between Two Oceans" aims to plug this historical gap. Drawing on an impressive range of archaeological and historical sources gleaned from research and documents in Britain, India, Singapore, United States and Australia, the book traces the geo-strategic development of Singapore from its first settlement in the thirteenth century through the turbulent phases of the Early Modern period to the dramatic military episodes that have been such a distinctive feature of the twentieth century. In presenting a balanced view of this momentous story, the authors have sought to dispel many of the myths about Singapore's military history that have grown up in the past and are now assumed to be factually correct. The book breaks new ground in revealing the difference between fact and fiction in Singapore's fascinating military past.

Bougainville Campaign Diary

This revealing journal of an ex-Papua New Guinea Defence Force Officer, details against the historical background, the inside story of military operations against the Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA). The book offers a sensitive treatment of civil war, from the inside. It provides a Melanesian perspective on a Melanesian war. It describes the background to the secessionist crisis (the discovery of copper, the establishment of the Bougainville Copper mine, and early secessionist movements on the island). The reader learns about the PNG military through Liria's description of his own recruitment and training. As an Intelligence Officer, Liria briefed others on the BRA, and it is through his account of one of those briefing sessions that the reader learns about the BRA, and the support for the BRA among the Bougainvillean people. As well as contributing to the history of the counter-insurgency campaign, the book is an entertaining account of life in uniform. Liria's style is that of a natural raconteur. He shares the opportunities for humour, and is not afraid to tell his readers how he cried to see the burnt out villages of Bougainville, which could so easily have been villages in his own Southern Highlands district. This is not a dry, academic work. It is a good read, and an informative one.

Boys of '67 : From Vietnam to Iraq, the Extraordinary Story of a Few Good Men

In what is sure to become a classic, “Boys of '67” follows the careers of a group of young second lieutenants from their baptism of fire in Vietnam, through the Cold War, and to the current insurgency in Iraq. In Vietnam, they experienced the Tet Offensive, the siege at Khe Sanh, and the 1972 Easter Offensive. They went on to serve eyeball-to-eyeball with North Koreans in the DMZ, and later they participated in the 1983 invasion of Grenada, operations in Beirut, and Desert Storm. Some would never make it out of Vietnam alive. Some would be crippled by wounds. All would fight like tigers, and one would rise to the very top, commanding the Marine Corps they all loved. Features: A sweeping saga of the United States Marine Corps; Previously secret battles between Marine generals and Army generals Tommy Franks and Norman Schwarzkopf; Inside the Pentagon on 9/11; An intriguing look at the divergent views that swirled in secret inside the Pentagon during the planning of invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq; An inside look at fight for Marines to get new and better tanks; One of the "Boys" becomes the first Marine named Supreme Allied Commander of NATO; Includes the story of Staff Sgt. Manny Cox, who died in Beirut and is the only enlisted man to be honoured by having a building at Quantico named after him; First official rebuttal by a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to Tommy Franks' account in his 2004 autobiography of the way the invasion of Iraq was planned.

Canada in Afghanistan : The War So Far

It has been said that Canada is a country with too much geography and too little history. Afghanistan has too much of both. As the war escalates in Afghanistan, more Canadians are asking what we are doing there. For a country that has specialised in peacekeeping, this war is a shock -- one that we have not yet comprehended. As the casualties mount, Canadians will want to know why we are there. "Canada in Afghanistan" introduces readers to Afghans and their culture, gives historical background from our involvement since 9/11, and covers operations casualties and the results. Also included is an examination of a new strategic experiment -- the provincial reconstruction team and the technological advances used in this war. Cautionary predictions conclude the book. This is an introduction to what is happening in Afghanistan and what we can expect up to 2009.

Canadian Way of War : Serving the National Interest

Contrary to popular opinion, this nation has always consciously and consistently utilised military force to further its security, as well as its economic and political well-being. Despite the best of intentions to aid others, the reality is that military force has most often been used to serve the national interest in ways that were not always altruistic but rather to serve practical political purpose. In the final analysis, the Canadian military experience has been integral to creating the advanced, affluent, and vibrant nation that exists today. This collection of essays, written by such noted historians and authors as Douglas Delaney, Stephen J. Harris, Ronald Haycock, Michael Hennessy, Bernd Horn, and Sean Maloney, spans the entirety of the Canadian military experience and underlines the reality that the government has consistently used its armed forces to achieve political purpose. More often than not, the 'Canadian way of war' has been a direct reflection of circumstance and political will.

Cheyenne Dog Soldiers CD-ROM : A Ledgerbook History of Coups and Combat

Never before have scholars attempted to match Plains ledgerbook drawings with specific events. But in Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, the earliest of the extant Cheyenne ledgerbooks, the authors have painstakingly matched many of the drawings with known events, such as the 1865 sack of Julesburg, Colorado, and the 1865 battles of Rush Creek, Platte River Bridge, and Tongue River in the Dakota and Montana territories. Also identified are such noted Dog Soliders as Tall Bull, Big Crow, Chirlwind, Feathered Bear, White Horse, Lean Bear and Wolf with Plenty of Hair. Using Cheyenne sources - both past and present - as well as US military records, legal depositions, diaries, and contemporary newspaper accounts, the author analyse each drawing, identifying the warriors and describing the actions depicted. With more than 100 beautifully reproduced colour drawings, this volume presents not only a groundbreaking departure from standard ledgerbook interpretation but also a riveting story of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers making a last stand for their existence as free people.
