On the Field of Mercy : Women Medical Volunteers from the Civil War to the First World War

This is the first comprehensive overview of the role of women medical volunteers in early American wars. From archival research and excerpts from letters, diaries, and memoirs, Mercedes Graf interweaves richly detailed personal accounts with the backgrounds of these early volunteers in American wars. The first chapter provides an overview of the services of women nurses in the American colonies and the Revolutionary War. Three chapters are devoted to women physicians in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I, while two additional chapters detail the work of female nurses and nuns in the Spanish-American War. The author also treats the work of women volunteers who served in two wars and concludes the book with an account of a female sculptor who worked for the American Red Cross in Paris, France, making facial masks for mutilated French soldiers. This thoroughly researched volume makes a significant contribution to women's volunteer efforts in early wars.

Romanian Military Reform and NATO Integration

This book provides a basis for comparative evaluation of Romania's military reform efforts, especially in comparison with the new NATO alliance members, and highlights the progress made since the first round of NATO enlargements took place in 1997. Among the issues discussed are defence planning, civilian defence management, force planning and restructuring, budgetary resources, constitutional and legal problems associated with reform, national security and defence strategies, and actual interoperable military contributions and performance in addressing the terrorist threat, especially in light of the events of September 11. The contributors are all civilian and military specialists directly involved in the problems of military reform and NATO integration.

Roots of Strategy, Book 4 : 4 Military Classics

David Jablonsky has compiled the best writings of four of the most influential theorists of naval and air power in the past century. Alfred Thayer Mahan's Influence of Sea Power Upon History, Julian Corbett's Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, Guilio Douhet's Command of the Air, and William 'Billy' Mitchell's Winged Defence continue to have relevance for students and practitioners of naval and air strategy. They illustrate the continuity of strategic thought, even through current times of great and widespread change.

Ruses for War : American Interventionism Since World War II - Newly Updated and Revised Edition

As a prelude to war in 2003, the administration of George W. Bush did its utmost to convince the public that Saddam Hussein's Iraq posed a threat to American security from the secret development of weapons of mass destruction. Within a year of the US invasion of Iraq, it became clear that no such weapons existed. Sadly, this was not the first time the American public was urged to support a war for reasons that turned out later to be scarcely credible. As law professor John Quigley amply demonstrates in this damning indictment of US military interventionism since World War II, the Bush administration's actions fit a decades-old pattern of going to war on a pretence rather than informing the public of the government's true intentions. The book analyses each instance of military intervention abroad by the United States since World War II from the perspective of what the government told the public, or did not tell it, about the reasons for war. Quigley concludes that the government's explanations differed greatly from reality. Why were American troops committed to Korea in 1950? Was it to stop the onslaught of world communism, as President Truman claimed? Why did the US Marines land in the Dominican Republic in 1966? President Johnson argued that it was to protect Americans in danger. This is the same defence used by President Reagan when he sent troops to Grenada in 1983. Quigley also analyses the stated versus actual reasons for intervention in the first Gulf War, Somalia, Kosovo, and other trouble spots. What emerges from his research is a tale of cover-ups, distortions, and manipulation of the media by America's leaders for the purpose of gaining public support.
