Nazi Rocketeers : Dreams of Space and Crimes of War

Wernher von Braun is known to many as the brilliant pioneer of rocketry who left Germany after World War II to lead the United States' space program. Until now, few have realised the bloody legacy he left behind in the ruins of the Third Reich. The Nazi Rocketeers tells the story of how von Braun and his fellow rocket scientists postponed their initial dreams of space travel to create weapons of terror and mass destruction. Not only were they ambitious members of the Nazi movement, but they also, Piskiewicz argues, collaborated with the SS in exploiting slave labour to build the V-2 rocket.

No Small Achievement : Special Operations Executive & the Danish Resistance 1940-1945

This book follows the build-up of the Danish Section with the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the top-secret sabotage organisation, which was part of the resistance movement in World War II. On the basis of archives just accessible in London it has finally been possible to describe the Danish Resistance Movement during the Second World War from an English point of view. From the beginning of 1940 the Special Operations Executive developed from an idea into a world-wide organisation of about 13,000 men and women of whom about 5,000 were active behind enemy lines. The intention was that the organisation should support the resistance movements in the occupied territories as part of Britain’s struggle for survival against Hitler's Germany. Denmark, at first, was not too keen on resistance and this book follows the laborious build-up of the Danish SOE Section from a few isolated acts of sabotage into a comprehensive resistance movement.

Odessa 1941-1944 : A Case Study of Soviet Territory under Foreign Rule

This book is a comprehensive study of the Romanian administration in Odessa and Transnistria. Based on American, German and Soviet sources, it sheds light on an important, but neglected, aspect of World War II in the Soviet Union. It draws a sharp contrast between occupation policies in Odessa and Transnistria, which were under Romanian administration, and those of the Nazi-occupied areas of the Soviet Union. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the occupation of Soviet territory during World War II. The book includes an introduction by Larry L Watts, an American specialist in the history of Romania during the Second World War, discussing Alexander Dallin's important contribution to Romanian historiography.

Omaha Beach : D-Day, June 6, 1944

In this unforgettable narrative of D-Day, Joseph Balkoski describes the minute-by-minute combat as it unfolded on Omaha Beach, allowing soldiers to speak for themselves as they recall their attempts to manoeuvre bombers through heavy cloud cover, the claustrophobic terror aboard transports, and the relentless fire that greeted them on the beach. Equal parts oral history and meticulous reconstruction, Omaha Beach is the closest the modern reader can get to experiencing the Normandy landings firsthand.

Panzer Aces II : Battle Stories of German Tank Commanders of WWII

With the same drama and excitement of the first book, Franz Kurowski relates the combat careers of six more decorated German Panzer officers. Extensively researched, these gripping accounts follow the men and their tanks across three continents into some of World War II's bloodiest engagements. They campaigned with Rommel in the deserts of North Africa, participated in the monumental tank battle at Kursk, and, maneuvering only by muzzle flashes, fought frightening small-unit contests in the dark of night. Master tacticians and gutsy leaders, these men are legends.

This is the first guide to chronicle the history of each division from its inception to its destruction. With painstaking research and attention to detail, Mitcham describes the formation and organisation of each, then discusses its overall combat history. He also includes a career sketch of every panzer divisional commander. Includes a comprehensive index of individuals, units, battles, and campaigns.

The Path to Blitzkrieg

In the wake of World War I, the German army lay in ruins--defeated in the war, sundered by domestic upheaval, and punished by the Treaty of Versailles. A mere twenty years later, Germany possessed one of the finest military machines in the world, capable of launching a stunning blitzkrieg attack against Poland in 1939. Well-known military historian Robert M. Citino shows how Germany accomplished this astonishing reversal and developed the doctrine, tactics, and technologies that its military would use to devastating effect in World War II.

Pearl Harbor - Japan's Fatal Blunder, Illustrated Edition

In this gripping narrative, the author reviews the decisions made by Admiral Nagumo, the Japanese strike force commander, and his chief of staff, Admiral Kusaka, and examines the battle of Midway, in this light. He also considers what a third Japanese attack on Oahu might have accomplished, had the Japanese pressed their offensive advantage to substantially cripple the united States Navy. Their failure to do so might be considered the "fatal blunder" that cost them the Second World War. Black-and-white photographs depict the damage wrought by the Japanese air strikes, which launched the United States unto one of history's bloodiest conflicts.

Focuses on Hitler's mental processes as evident in his writings and on descriptions given by people who saw and knew him. Quiet Hero - The Untold Medal of Honor Story of George E Wahlen at the Battle for Iwo Jima

This powerful story documents the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of extraordinary navy corpsman George Wahlen. After decades of silence, this survivor of one of World War 2's most horrific battles divulges the gritty details of his incredible experiences. Upon landing with a company of 250 marines, Wahlen fought alongside them. Under repeated grenade and mortar fire himself, Wahlen refused evacuation, preferring to aid those he perceived to be in greater danger. Witnesses of his heroics remain dumbfounded he survived, and while his incredible feats of bravery saved countless marines, the intensity of the battle left few men of the company unscathed -- they suffered the highest killed-in-action ratio of any marine company during a single battle in US history. The significance of his story lies in the historic context of the battle for Iwo Jima; while many remember the iconic flag-raising photograph captured during this conflict, few realise the battle was the most costly of World War II for America. After receiving a Medal of Honour from President Harry Truman in 1945, Wahlen has been the quintessential quiet hero, refusing the adulation usually bestowed on nationally recognised veterans.

The Red Army in Romania

This book, written by two well-known specialists in twentieth century Romanian history, is the first comprehensive study of the Red Army's occupation of Romanian territory in 1940-1941, and its occupation of the country at the end of World War II, which lasted until the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country in 1958. Based on previously unavailable archival sources, it will be of interest not only to students of contemporary Romanian history, but also to anyone interested in the occupation policies of the Red Army and Soviet policy in Eastern Europe at the end of World War II. The authors discuss the geopolitical and historical conditions that allowed the Red Army to occupy Romania, the consequences of the occupation on the country, particularly on political life, as it directly led to the establishment of a totalitarian communist regime in Romania. An important part of the book also deals with the consequences of Red Army's stationing on Romanian territory, its impact on the evolution of social relations in the country, and the opposition of Romanian society to the Russian occupation. Much attention is paid to the economic aspects of the occupation, where a detailed account of the costs and losses to the Romanian economy as consequence of the Red Army's abuses and its illegal confiscation of Romanian goods and materials and their export to the Soviet Union is presented. The circumstances surrounding the Red Army's withdrawal from Romania in 1958 is also discussed in detail. The appendixes include translations of many relevant documents referring to the Soviet occupation of Romania, making it a valuable book for students and researchers alike.

Retreat to the Reich : The German Defeat in France, 1944

The Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, marked the beginning of the German defeat in the West. Military historian Samuel W. Mitcham, Jr., vividly recaptures the desperation of the Wehrmacht as its thin gray line finally snapped amidst brutal hedgerow-to-hedgerow fighting in Normandy and as the survivors fled the Allied steamroller in a mad dash back to the Reich. With colourful descriptions and informative details, Mitcham recounts the German military retreat and the erosion of Germany's stronghold on Europe -- as viewed through the eyes of a defiant, but ultimately defeated Wehrmacht.
