The Combat
History of U.S. Army Tank Battalions in the Pacific in World War II
Although the history of armor in World War II has captured the attention of
countless authors, no one has yet chronicled the extensive use of tanks in
the Pacific--until now. In comprehensive detail Gene Eric Salecker describes
the exploits of American tanks on the jungle islands where troops engaged in
savage combat and encountered unforgiving weather and terrain. Stationed in
the Philippines when the Japanese attacked the islands in 1941, the U.S.
Army's independent tank battalions fought from the very start of the war.
From New Guinea and the Solomons to the Ryukyus, American armor proved
instrumental in winning World War II in the Pacific. |

Romania and World War II
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 in
Europe, the Center for Romanian Studies organised an international
conference on ‘Romania and World War II' in Iasi from 25-26 May 1995. The
conference was organised with help from the County Board of Iasi and the
Romanian Foundation for Humanitarian Assistance ‘Michael the Brave'. The
conference, held at the historic Palace of Culture in Iasi, united scholars
from Romania, the United States, England, and Holland. It provided an
opportunity for these distinguished specialists in the history of Romania
and World War 2 to present the latest results of their research, especially
in light of the recent opening of many archives in the former communist bloc
countries. This volume includes papers based on the communications delivered
at the conference. As both Romanian and English were used at the conference,
the articles are published in the language in which they were prepared by
their author. Fifteen in Romanian and six in English. |

Rommel's
Desert War
The Life & Death of the Afrika Korps
(Stackpole Military History Series)
In a series of battles marked by daring raids and quick-armoured thrusts
against a numerically superior enemy, Erwin Rommel, the notorious Desert
Fox, and his Afrika Korps waged one of World War II's toughest campaigns in
the North African desert in 1942. The Axis campaign climaxed in June with
the recapture of Tobruk, a triumph that netted 33,000 prisoners and earned
Rommel a field marshal's baton. By fall, however, after setbacks at Alam
Halfa and the 2 battles of El Alamein, the Afrika Korps teetered on the
brink of defeat, which would come in Tunisia 6 months later.

Secret Alliance
"Secret Alliance" contains in three volumes a detailed study of the Danish
Resistance Movement during the Second World War. The study is based upon a
comprehensive collection of documents, which survived illegality and were
found and made available by the author who, parallel to his search, procured
accounts from leading members of the Resistance to fill unavoidable gaps in
the contemporary material. The books deal with Danish Resistance in all its
aspects, and while describing the gradual development of resistance activity
they analyse Denmark's peculiar situation, formally never at war with
Germany, but de facto participating in the common Allied struggle and
therefore considered by friend and foe as an active partner and opponent.
Great emphasis is laid upon the movement's very close connections with the
outside world, especially its intimate co-operation with the Western powers,
canalised mainly through the British SOE organisation. The books also deal
with the political structure of the movement, its relations to the official
political circles, and its efforts to bring an official policy of
negotiation with the occupying power to its downfall – an attitude which in
1944 led to the recognition from the Soviet Union of "Fighting Denmark", the
movement thereby paving the way to a formal recognition of Denmark as an
Ally. |

Silent Warriors of World War II :
The
Alamo Scouts Behind Japanese Lines
The Alamo Scouts, Sixth Army's Special Reconnaissance Unit of World War II,
provided intelligence-gathering and tactical reconnaissance in the Pacific
Theatre. During the war, they performed over 106 successful missions in the
Admiralty Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines, most deep behind enemy
lines. The Scouts took part in liberating two POW camps. The Scouts evolved
from a simple reconnaissance unit to a sophisticated intelligence unit
supplying and coordinating large-scale guerilla operations on Leyte and
Luzon. They did this without losing a man, killed or captured. The Scouts
are now recognised as forerunners of the modern Special Forces. |

Soldier Under Three Flags
: The Exploits of Special Forces' Captain Larry A Thorne
A captivating story about a controversial war hero. During World War II,
Larry A Thorne (Torni) fought the Russians, under the Finnish flag, and
later under the German flag. He won every medal for bravery that Finland
could bestow during the conflict with the Soviet Union. Leading a special
hand-picked unit, Thorne operated deep behind enemy lines for extended
periods. Later, Thorne fled to the U.S., joined the Green Berets, became an
officer, and a legend.
A fast-paced, exciting biography of one of the legends of US. Army Special
Forces. Highly recommended.

Solomons Campaigns 1942-1943
From
Guadalcanal to Bougainville Pacific War Turning Point
The follow-up to 'The Amphibians Are Coming!', this second volume covers all
the Solomons Campaigns and tells the story of America’s first offensive
after Pearl Harbor. Part I, 'The Southern Solomons Campaigns', is excerpted
from Volumes IV and V of distinguished naval historian Samuel Loring
Morison’s ‘History of United States Naval Operations in World War II’, and
covers the bloody six-month struggle for Guadalcanal. Part II, 'The Central
Solomons Campaigns', chronicles the amphibious operations in the New Georgia
Islands group, including the five separate landings at Rendova, Segi Point,
Viru Harbor, Wickham Anchorage, and Rice Anchorage. Part III, 'The Northern
Solomons Campaigns', recounts the seizure of the Treasury Islands, the
Choiseul Diversion, the Bougainville campaign, and sums up the many valuable
lessons learned during the Solomons Campaigns -- most becoming doctrine in
later Pacific campaigns.

They Were So Young :
Montrealers Remember
WWII
After visiting her cousin's grave in the Canadian military
cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laize in Normandy, Patricia Burns returned to
Montreal with a determination to record the stories of veterans of World War
II. These stories of young men and women who served in the army, navy and
air force illustrate the raw courage, youthful bravado, and sacrifice needed
to defeat a powerful enemy. Some served on the home front; others, who
returned from the theatre of war, were never the same again. Moving accounts
from family members of veterans -- sons, daughters, wives, and siblings --
reveal the price they also paid in this most horrible war. Introduced are a
young bride who spent her first three wedding anniversaries alone while her
husband languished in the POW camp, Stalag Luft III, and took part in the
doomed escape which was made into the movie, The Great Escape; a ship's
stoker who feared not being able to escape a torpedo attack which would mean
either instant death or a horrible death by scalding; the daring pilot who
became a priest after the war; a young woman who joined the air force and
realised that its motto, "We Serve That Men May Fly" really meant "We Serve
That Men May Die"; a nurse who unknowingly skied in a minefield in Italy,
and a soldier's account of the Dieppe raid of August 19, 1942 -- "the
costliest day in Canada's military history." |

Tigers in Combat, Volume 1
By the end of World War 2, the dreaded Tiger tank had achieved mythical,
almost mystical status. In this much-sought-after volume on the Wehrmacht's
numbered Tiger units, Wolfgang Schneider tells -- in pictures -- the story
of these renowned tanks. Hundreds of photos depict Tigers in all situations
and terrain, and a section of painstakingly detailed drawings brings the
tanks to life in the metallic greys, snow whites, desert tans, and forest
greens and browns that coloured them. Modellers and buffs alike will delight
in this impressive collection. An accompanying text lists units' combat
strengths, equipment, commanders, and engagements. |

Tigers in Combat, Volume 2
In this follow-up to "Tigers in Combat I", Wolfgang Schneider turns his
attention to the Tiger tanks of the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht's "named"
units, such as the Großdeutschland Division, Company Hummel, and Tiger Group
Meyer. Based on combat diaries, the text tells the history of each unit, but
most of the book is devoted to photos of the tanks and the men who manned
them. It offers as unique and comprehensive a look at these lethal machines
as is possible sixty years after World War II. Includes hundreds of
photographs -- many of them rare -- of Tiger tanks and their crews. Colour
illustrations focus on markings, camouflage, and insignia and inventories
and timelines for each unit. |
